Dark Shadows Episode 1165 12/11/70

Daphne reads another letter from Joanna. It says she is coming for her now, and doesn't want her to be afraid. She calls to Joanna, and begs her to help her. The front doors of Collinwood swing open. Daphne goes to them and shuts them. Back in the house, she finds Joanna's cape on the floor. She asks why she's doing this, and asks for her help to have the love that she once had. She begs for her sister's help, and when the doorway at the top of the stairs opens, she runs into the drawing room.A figure approaches the drawing room. Samantha opens the door and asks Daphne what she's carrying on about. Daphne says she saw a cape, and Samantha says there's no cape. She says Daphne was frightened by her own imagination, and she's not fit to be Tad's governess. She says Quentin hired a pretty face. She then says she saw a figure by the drapes, and then disappeared. Daphne asks what she looked like, and Samantha asks how she knew it was a woman. She claims Daphne has brought evil into the house, and she's to stay away from Tad.

Desmond tells Quentin that a new judge denied his motion to postpone the trial. He adds that the county prosecutor resigned. Desmond expects Trask will be named. Quentin can't believe it. 

Samantha finds Tad up by the fire. He says he keeps thinking about tomorrow, and what's going to happen to his father. Samantha tells him he must wait and hope for the best. He tells her that she has to go to court and tell them that the accusations are not true. He asks her to do that, and she turns away from him. He says that his father is innocent. She asks him to be reasonable. He says that she must show them the truth. She assures Tad that Desmond will do what he can to prove that. Tad asks if she wants to help his father. She asks Tad to have faith in her. 

Desmond arrives, and Samantha sends Tad upstairs. Tad tells Desmond to let his father know he's praying for him. He goes upstairs, and Samantha says she must be able to get Tad away from Collinwood. Desmond reminds her that if he leaves before 21, he loses the inheritance. He adds that if Quentin is cleared, then all will be back to normal. She describes the choice between Quentin and Gerard as a choice between two evils.

Quentin tells Daphne that he knows something is wrong, and asks her to tell him. She says Joanna is back from the grave. He asks what her latest note said, and she hands it to him. It says better she's with her than with Quentin. He tells her that Joanna would never do that. She says she found Joanna's cape, and Samantha saw her spirit in the drawing room, but didn't recognize her. She says that Samantha accused her of bringing evil into the house, and no to see Tad again. He tells her to take that to Gerard to deal with. He tells her to sneak out of the jail so that she doesn't get associated with him. 

The tribunal is called to order. Desmond asks how the tribunal can begin with no prosecutor. He adds that the prosecutor resigned because the preceedings were repugnant to him. Desmond also moves that the trial be terminated on the grounds that it is unconstitutional. The motion is denied. The tribunal names Dawson as the prosecutor. Dawson apologizes for the delay, and tells Quentin that he understands they must be shocked, but he promises a fair trial. 

Quentin asks Desmond why he's upset, pointing out that Dawson is Gerard's friend. He tells Quentin that Dawson is here to crucify him. Quentin says they can't blame Gerard for everything that happens. Desmond objects to Dawson being the prosecutor, and his objection is denied. Dawson presents his opening remarks, noting that a series of regrettable incidents befell Collinsport, and it has been determined that withcraft was the cause, perpetrated by Quentin, who will be proven guilty and beheaded. Quentin tells Desmond that he wants to see Gerard right away. Desmond reiterates his objections to the tribunal. 

Dawson opens his case explaining that he was going to start with Trask, but instead will start with Samantha Collins. Desmond objects, saying that as his wife she cannot testify without Quentin waiving his rights, and Dawson responds that the rules governing the tribunal pre-date the constitution. They overrule his objection and call Samantha to the stand. She is sworn in, and Dawson asks how long she's known Quentin indulged in occult practices, and she says as long as she has known him. Desmond objects and Dawson withdraws the question. He then asks why she has come to testify. She explains that Quentin always dabbled in the occult. She is asked to provide a specific incident, and she says that he has communicated with the dead, and brought a spirit into the house to terrorize them. Dawson asks her to explain, and she says she has seen it. Desmond points out that what she saw may very well have been a figment of her imagination. Samantha points out that Daphne has also seen the ghost, and known of its existence for a very long time. 

Our thoughts: 

John: Does anyone else think that Samantha is plotting against Quentin and Daphne, planting the notes from 'Joanna.' I suspected her, and after her courtroom appearance, I'm all but sure she's behind it.

 

Christine: It was pretty clear she was responsible at the beginning of the episode when she did such a poor job of pretending she saw a figure behind the drapes. 

John: Dawson gives a command performance at the tribunal! Quentin doesn't stand a chance. It is funny how they play crowd noises to try and convince us there are more than seven people in the room...

Christine: Get a platter for Quentin's head. With Dawson on board, he's way more done than if Trask had assumed the role. I've never heard so many people in Collinsport all at once. There was certainly never that much chatter at the Blue Whale!

 

John: I love how Quentin thinks he can arrange to see Gerard in the middle of the tribunal. I think he's about to realize a little too late what others have been trying to convince him of for some time now.

Christine: He may be learning belatedly to always listen and follow your lawyer's advice. Perhaps Desmond will pick out a nice box to store Quentin's head in when all is said and done. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1157 12/1/70

Quentin takes a drink. The constable comes in and arrests Quentin for murder. Quentin asks on what grounds, and the constable says it will all come out in the trial. He says that base don what he's heard, he might have a motive. Quentin asks to see Tad before he's taken in. He calls him into the drawing room. Tad comes downstairs and the constable leaves them. Tad asks if they found the man who killed his uncle. Quentin says they haven't but the constable is doing what he must do. He says he has to go away for a while, and ensures him that he's not responsible for Randall's death. Tad leaves, and Quentin asks to speak to Tad's governess. 

Tad tells Daniel not to let them take his father away. Daniel is troubled by the news.

Quentin is unable to find Daphne, and prepares to leave her a note.

Dawson arrives to see Gerard, and asks him why he murdered Randall. He says he just heard from Trask that he's dead. Gerard points out that Randall found the mask. Dawson says that in that case, he had good cause. Gerard says he did, but have cause, but he didn't murder him. Dawson points out the mark of the Devil was left with the body. Gerard says they apparently have a friend; someone outside their coven. Gerard says that soon Quentin will have no head, and he will be the head of Collinwood.

Daniel demands to speak to Quentin, and tells the constable to leave them alone. He tells Quentin he warned him about his strange fascination with the occult. He tells Quentin that he went to the top of his stairs and had a vision of him killing Lorna. Quentin says that someone has been filling his mind with evil distortions. Daniel asks if he had fought with Desmond. And he says he hated Grimes' cattle. Quentin reiterates his innocence. Daniel clutches his chest and falls to the ground. 

Dawson and Gerard arrive at Collinwood and hear Quentin calling. He asks them to help Daniel up. The constable and Dawson help Daniel upstairs. Gerard says he'll do what he can to help him. Quentin thanks him, and asks him to look after Daphne. He says he'll be more than happy. The constable returns and tells them that Dawson is making Daniel comfortable, and that Daniel asked to see Gerard. The constable tells Quentin that they have to go now, and Quentin follows him out.

Gerard comes to see Daniel, and Dawson goes downstairs to wait. Daniel tells Gerard he wishes his sons, his son, turned out like Gerard. He asks for his help. He tells Gerard that he's dying, and will not live to see Quentin's trial. He says he feels that he must cut Quentin out of his will, but he says he must know the truth first. Gerard tells him that they will find the truth.

The arrive at the jail with Quentin. A woman, Grimes' daughter, unlocks the cell and Quentin steps in. She tells the constable that he's a witch. She says she's bringing in extra locks to put on the cell. He says he's not planning to escape, and when she sees the Devil's mark on his ring, she calls him a murderer. 

Gerard goes downstairs and tells Dawson that everything is splendid. He asks if he'd like to play a ghost. Dawson is confused. Gerard says they are going to hold a seance, and he needs him to play the part of Randall Drew. He explains that Daniel wants to know about Quentin's guilt or innocence.

Daniel tells Gerard he has reservations about holding a seance. They sit at the table with Dawson, and Gerard assures him that he is sure he will be pleased with the final results. They place their hands together, and Gerard begins the seance. Gerard calls to Randall. Dawson struggles, and Gerard says it's the spirit entering the body. He says his name is Randall Drew. Gerard asks the name, and Daniel interrupts saying that he doesn't want to know. 

Gerard continues and asks for the name of Randall's murderer. Dawson says Quentin's name, and Daniel breaks down, crying. Gerard gets up and Daniel apologizes. He says he's always known the truth. Gerard apologizes, saying that he was expecting someone else. He says he now knows that he must choose a new heir. Gerard smiles.

Our thoughts: 

John: Quentin is an odd duck. He knows that he had a motive, knows that all the cards are stacked against him, and yet refuses to do anything to offer up a defense or alibi. He might as well be guilty! Of course, it's not like the witchcraft is going to stop if he gets beheaded...

 

Christine: It would have been prudent for him to stop wearing the ring with the Devil's Mark when Lorna Bell was discovered with it carved into her skull, but he definitely should have removed it once the mark was found next to Randall's body. 

 

John: What's with Grimes' daughter working at the jail? I have a hunch that she's going to lead to further complications as far as Quentin is concerned.

 
Christine: She's not just Grimes' daughter, but the constable's wife, and she'll probably stir up quite a bit of trouble, otherwise she'd have no need to be there. 

John: It's seance tracker time! Or is it? What's really different between what Gerard did and a real seance? I was actually hoping that Randall's spirit would really possess Dawson, and he would call out Gerard as Judah Zachery!

Christine: The difference is in the intent. He did not truly intend to call forth a spirit and it was a complete sham. I also hoped Randall would possess Dawson, just as Sarah Collins did Vicki after Carolyn tried to fake her presence during the séance in Episode 365.

Dark Shadows Episode 1109 9/24/70

Following the sound of a heartbeat, Barnabas and Julia go into the room with Quentin's portrait. Julia says that he's still alive. Barnabas says he's either been taken prisoner and is close to death — or Gerard has buried him alive! Julia asks him what they should do. Carrie gasps, and they turn to see she and Tad standing in the door. Tad says all is happening as it did before, first Gerard killed Quentin, and then they died. Barnabas asks the children if they know where Quentin was buried in 1840. Tad tells Carrie it's their only chance. He tells Barnabas that Quentin was buried in an unmarked grave, near an area in the cemetery that was fenced off.

Quentin lies unhappily in his grave.

Daphne places flowers on the unmarked grave, and hears Barnabas and Julia approaching. She leaves before they arrive. Julia finds the flowers on the fresh grave. Barnabas says Quentin must be buried there. Daphne watches from the shadows.

Barnabas digs while Julia stands and watches.

Tad tells Carrie that Gerard will be mad when he finds out they told them where Quentin's grave is. Gerard appears in the room, and beckons them to follow him.

Barnabas opens the coffin, and they find Quentin inside, still alive.

Gerard brings the children to see Daphne in the tower room. They ask Daphne what's going to happen, but she doesn't speak to them. Gerard takes out a box, and Daphne says she has clothes for them to change into. She then begs Gerard to spare the children and take her instead. He gives her the box of clothes. Daphne tells the children to change into the clothes. Gerard leaves them and closes and locks the door.

Quentin says he had the memory of Gerard from 1840, waving a green flag three times. He says that led to the destruction of Collinwood. He asks Julia where the children are. She says they're at the old house, and he says they aren't there anymore.

Gerard stands inside the playroom, admiring the charred wreckage of the Rose Cottage doll house.

Quentin, Barnabas and Julia arrive in the West Wing. He tells them he has to open the door in order to get to the playroom. He does, and they go inside. The children are not there.  They leave, and Gerard steps out of the shadows.

Quentin calls to Tad and Carrie. Barnabas and Julia call them as well. Daphne tells the children to remain still. Quentin, Barnabas and Julia come in and see them. Daphne is glad to see Quentin is safe. He says he must stay with the children, and sends Daphne with Barnabas and Julia. 

After they leave, he calls to Gerard and says that he's there. He says he'll force him out. He takes the children to the window, and tells them to look to the sky. He seeks the guidance of a star. He says that David and Hallie are the ancestral twins of Tad and Carrie, and through the light of the star will they be restored to their bodies. Tad says he can feel it happening. Carrie says that perhaps it's better this way. Gerard appears in the room. Quentin tells him that he lost. Gerard scowls, and grabs Quentin's throat. He leads him to the window and tosses him aside. He grabs the green flag and waves it three times.

In the cemetery, zombie pirates burst forth from the earth.

Quentin is alone in the room when Barnabas and Julia return. He says he failed. The children are gone, and he failed to stop Gerard. They tell him that Daphne got away from them. Quentin says they must find Daphne and the children, it's their last chance.

Daphne runs into the playroom where she finds Tad and Carrie. Gerard appears and she screams for him to leave them alone.

Downstairs, six pirate zombies enter Collinwood.  

Quentin calls to Daphne. He enters the playroom and finds the children, unconscious. He hears Daphne moan, and she apologizes to him. Daphne asks him why Gerard had to destroy Rose Cottage, and then dies in his arms.

In the foyer, zombies trash Collinwood. Julia and Barnabas see them from the top of the stairs, and the zombies run after them.

Zombies invade the second floor, and the house catches fire.

Quentin cradles Daphne's body. He lays her down and leaves the playroom.

Barnabas barricades the door to the west wing. Quentin comes out and tells him and Julia that Daphne and the children are dead. He tells them to escape the house while they have time, and walks away. Zombies break through the door and grab Barnabas. Julia opens a door and sees the stairway has re-appeared. Barnabas tells her to go, promising to follow her. She runs up he stairs. Barnabas breaks away from the zombies, but when he arrives at the door, the staircase is gone.

Julia exits the staircase.  She sees Carrie, alive, wearing period clothes. Julia realizes that she's in 1840 Collinwood. 

Our thoughts: 

John: Quentin sure bounced back quickly for someone who had been buried alive, even if for only a few hours and not the days that have passed for us.

Christine: Perhaps that is the result of having a portrait that gives him immortality. 

John: Was there not enough money in the make-up budget to cover zombie hands? Interesting that the zombies toggled between old-school Romero ghouls and contemporary running zombies when the need arose. And pretty funny when someone threw a drape over one of their heads! All told, the zombies coming through the door and grabbing Barnabas was pretty cool.

Christine: Some comic relief was desperately needed after seeing two children lying dead on the floor, with one of them being a main character present since the inception of the series. Pretty shocking! If that draped zombie looked familiar, it was because he also played the zombie known as Emory Pace, resurrected by Jeb in Episode 963. I was just happy to see that someone thought to replace Benjamin's portrait with a tapestry to protect it from zombie mayhem! 

John: Okay, from this vantage point I think it's safe to call BS on Carolyn's clues about the destruction of Collinwood. None of it really meant anything. There was no real significance. It was just a variety of of odds and ends strung together, like plot points in Lost. The appearance of depth through complexity, when it's now pretty clear that it's unlikely there was any real plan. And they dropped the ball on the murder. Daphne's death could hardly be classified as such, and the timing had her die after Gerard had already set in motion the destruction of Collinwood. So, on the bright side, some fun creepy stuff in 1970 Collinwood, but at the end of the day, it was all a rather laborious setup to get us back into 1840. At least we got to go out with zombies.

Christine: Think of the children! What about the children?! It makes sense that Carolyn's clues were meaningless. She was probably still possessed by Leticia in 1995 and was just messing with Barnabas and Julia. 

John: Could this be the end? Or perhaps the more important question, should this have been the end? Hopefully the final 200+ episodes will prove to be worth our while, and will justify all the time and energy spent setting things up following the return from parallel time, first to the future (1995), and then back to the present (1970).

Christine: The only question in my mind is whether or not Barnabas is getting eaten by pirate zombies! This episode is really pretty traumatic with the kids dying and the Collinwood we have come to know and love over the past four years left in ruins. While it may be a disappointing turn of events, it's hard not to admire the writers' willingness to take big risks, and I think you'll find that what's to come will be worth your while. Buckle up! It's going to be a bumpy ride!

Dark Shadows Episode 1103 9/16/70

Julia returns to Tad's room, and Quentin stops her outside. He asks her to take him to see Hallie. Julia tries to check on David/Tad, and Quentin tries to block her. She won't be discouraged, and gets into the room in time to find Daphne performing some sort of ritual with David/Tad. Daphne tells her she must get out of the room. Julia grabs Tad and hands him to Quentin. Julia asks Daphne who brought her to life. She says Julia wouldn't understand. Julia asks if Gerard is alive, too. She says that he's not, and asks Quentin to make Julia understand. Julia accuses Quentin of knowing what was going on. He says Daphne is the only one who can save the children. Julia sends him out with Tad so she can talk to Daphne alone.

After Quentin is gone, Julia asks Daphne who is responsible for bringing her back to life. She demands that Daphne answer her questions. She says the children will die and the house will be destroyed if they don't stop Gerard. Daphne says that she's the children's only hope of staying alive. Julia says she's talking about David and Hallie. Daphne says she can't do anything for them. Julia says she wants Daphne to come with her to the old house and tell her everything she knows about Gerard and the children. She reminds her that the children will die and Quentin will be destroyed. She assures her that Tad and Carrie will be well cared for. Daphne says she won't help David and Hallie at the expense of Tad and Carrie. They leave Windcliff together.

Back at the old house, Daphne sits by the fire. Quentin flirts with her. She says he knows her place is with Tad and Carrie. He says he knows she's also dedicated to bringing Gerard back to life. She explains that it's not because she wants to. He says there's no good that can come of that.

Julia walks in on them, and assures Daphne the children will be alright. Quentin asks Julia about her plan. She says she wants Stokes to come and talk to Daphne. She sends Quentin to contact him. She mentions that in the future, Stokes was in Europe when Collinwood was destroyed, but when they returned to 1970, he had to international travel plans scheduled.

Carrie asks Tad where they took Daphne, and what's going to happen to them. He says he doesn't know, but he tells her they're not safe. He reminds her what Daphne said—they're only safe if they bring Gerard back to life. Carrie says they would have been better off to be like Gerard. Tad says they're going to run away from Windcliff.

Julia asks Daphne why she doesn't trust her. Daphne says it's not a matter of trust. She explains she's dealing with a power beyond her ability to control. She says she tried in the past and he made the children suffer. Julia asks if she was ever in love with Gerard. Daphne says the question is irrelevant.

The kids escaped from Windcliff. In the woods, Tad suggests that they catch their second wind. Carrie asks how far Collinwood is, and he tells her it's only a few miles, but they're not going there.

Julia asks Daphne if she thinks Quentin is the reincarnation of a Quentin that lived in 1840. Daphne says she wouldn't know, and Julia accuses her of having been in love with Quentin in 1840, and being in love with this Quentin. She says the first Quentin was more aggressive. She says 1970 Quentin is a gentler man—easier to know and love.

Quentin returns and says he spoke to Stokes' housekeeper. He says his housekeeper says he took a plane to Europe this morning. Julia says time is running out. She says soon there will be a murder, and then Rose Cottage will be destroyed. And then the disaster at Collinwood will follow. She turns to look at Daphne.

The kids make their way through the cemetery. Carrie asks why they came to the cemetery, and he says no one will find them there.  They sneak into a crypt and find a coffin sitting out in the open. Carrie asks him what it's doing there. The coffin creaks, and opens. They hide behind pillars in the crypt. A figure dressed in black crawls out and leaves the crypt. Carrie says they never should have come here.

Later, Tad and Carrie leave the crypt. As they make their way through the woods, they hear dogs howling. They stumble across a body. Carrie asks who it is, and Tad says he doesn't know. David says he appears to have been attacked by an animal that bit his neck and drained his blood. Carrie reminds him the same thing happened in 1840. He says he remembers, and they run off.

Julia gets out her amulet and tries to hypnotize Daphne. She does, and tells Daphne that she will answer all of her questions. Julia asks if she knows who is destined to be murdered. Daphne says she does. Julia asks their name. Daphne stands up, and says the person who will be murdered is her. Julia asks if she knows how and when it will happen. Daphne says the green flag will be waved in the window three times. Julia remembers finding David with the green flag in the tower room. She asks Daphne if it will happen before or after the destruction of Rose Cottage. Daphne says Rose Cottage will be destroyed first, tonight.  

Our thoughts: 

John: Is this really the time for Quentin to be flirting with Daphne? And if Daphne loved Quentin in 1840, wouldn't he remember her? I mean, he is the immortal werewolf with the Dorian Gray painting still, right?

Christine: Quentin was flirting with Daphne when she was a ghost, so apparently there's no time that's not a good time for Quentin to flirt. Daphne loved his uncle Quentin. This Quentin did not achieve immortality until 1897, so he could not have been the same Quentin.

John: When exactly did Windcliff move so much closer to Collinwood? I recall folks making the long trek by foot — wasn't Maggie the first? But I thought it was at least an hour away by car originally.

Christine: I think Maggie was the first to go wandering away from Windcliff in Episode 294. We were led to believe Windcliff was quite a trek in Episode 265, after Sam Evans and Joe Haskell made the drive and met Dr. Hoffman for the first time.

Episode 265

John: Hmmm. I was extremely disappointed when it looked like the murder had not only occurred off-screen, but that the victim appeared to be a nameless, faceless character. Imagine if Daphne hadn't told Julia that she would be the murder victim. Clearly they would have ticked the murder checkbox when the vampire's victim turned up? And Tad is a pretty sophisticated 1840s-era kid to do a forensic analysis on the murder victim to determine that the two punctures on his neck and a loss of blood clearly indicated he was the victim of an animal attack. And thanks to Carrie, we now know that there was a vampire running around in 1840 Collinsport as well!

Christine: Since Barnabas was locked in a coffin at the time, we know it couldn't have been him, but could it have been one of his victims he may have inadvertently turned? I was pleased to see the reappearance of Julia's hypno-medallion, but was confused by the fact that Daphne never looked directly at it. I wonder if Kate Jackson was afraid she might really be hypnotized.
