Dark Shadows Episode 1003 4/29/70

Quentin hears voices in Angelique's room. He opens the door, and when he sees who he thinks is Daniel and Amy, he yells at them, but they don't respond. David and Amy are talking about Dr. Hoffman, and Barnabas' having been caught there.

Quentin asks Amy if she can hear him, and from behind him, she says she can. He turns to see Daniel and Amy standing behind him. Daniel asks him if something is wrong. He tells them nothing is wrong. He sends them away to play. As they're leaving, Quentin asks Amy if Will spoke to her about Barnabas. She says that he didn't; she just found the papers he wrote about him.

Quentin goes back to the door and opens it, this time into Alexis' bedroom. He explains to her that the room was empty a moment ago, with Daniel and Amy standing inside. He tells her that he then saw them in the hall behind him. Angelexis tells him that she's been there the entire time. He says he thought that when Angelique was in her final resting place, the strange behavior in the house would stop. He tells her that at least they're rid of the ghost of Dameon Edwards. She sounds surprised to hear his name. He says Bruno might be right in thinking that Angelique's spirit was responsible for Dameon appearing. Angelexis asks if he's done anything to find her sister's murderer. He says he doesn't think she was murdered. Angelexis asks him to leave her alone. He tells her that if Angelique had been murdered, he would be equally interested in finding her murderer. He leaves and Angelique wonders why she's so cold.

Amy and Daniel are going through trunks in a the old house, which Daniels suggests is something girls would do. He asks if she ever plays in the basement, and she says it was always locked. He tells her it never used to be. He tells her that his Uncle Will is crazy. He says there's a passage to the basement from the beach. Amy refuses to join him. Daniel starts to leave, and she tells him there's a sword in the room. He goes looking for it, and begins to hear a heartbeat. Amy says he's just trying to scare her. He says it's coming from a picture, and shows her the portrait of Barnabas Collins.

Amy screams and faints. Daniel manages to wake her, and she repeats chains and trap. A man comes in who Daniel refers to as Fred. He explains that something happened to Amy. He asks what he did, and Daniel says she saw the painting and fainted.

Quentin asks Daniel if he was trying to frighten Amy. He said he isn't. Fred reiterates that Amy kept saying trapped and chained. Quentin thanks Fred for bringing Amy back to Collinwood. He leaves, and Daniel asks Quentin why she fainted.

As Fred is leaving, Angelexis is coming downstairs, feeling cold. Fred says he knows what to do about that, and embraces her. He says he's been waiting to hold her like this ever since he saw her. He tells her to meet him later. She tells him to kiss her. He starts to, but Quentin comes out of the drawing room. Fred leaves.

Hannah is dealing tarot cards when Angelexis comes to see her. She says that her sister came there to do things she couldn't do at Collinwood. Angelexis asks her to read her fortune. Hannah says she sounds just like her, referring to Angelique. She says she didn't think Alexis believed in such things, and adds that she only tells what she sees in the cards.

She deals the first card—the tower of destruction. Followed by the moon inverted. Hannah stands up and tells her to leave. Angelexis asks her to tell her what it means, and Hannah says she has no future. Angelexis then asks her to read her palm. Hannah does, and says that she's not Alexis—she's Angelique! Angelique says she knew that she'd come back, and asks if she wants to know how she did. Hannah says she doesn't. Angelique reminds her that she introduced her to the occult. She asks Hannah where Julia is, and she tells her that Quentin sent her on vacation.

She then asks why Dameon Edward's ghost is there. Hannah says he cannot rest. He has threatened the children, Quentin and Bruno. Angelique asks about Trask. Hannah tells her that she knows why, and Angelique says she feels the cold of a tomb. Hannah asks her why she came back. Angelique tells her she came back to have Quentin's love. Hannah realizes that she wants to kill him. Angelique says he'll want to die when he finds out who murdered her. Hannah didn't realize she was murdered. Angelique starts to tell her, but feels the cold again, drawing her back into the tomb. She tells Hannah to go to the Loomis house and bring a man who works there back to her. She threatens to haunt her if she doesn't help, so Hannah leaves.

Quentin asks Amy if she's feeling better. She says she is. He asks her what happened tonight when she saw the painting. She says she saw his eyes, and he needs help. Quentin tells her that Barnabas died 200 years ago, and she says she knows.

Hannah brings Fred to Angelique. They embrace, and she says she feels warmer in his arms. He suddenly feels cold. She tells him to look at her. She says he will feel cold, but must not look away from her. She forces him to kiss her. His eyes go wide as he tries to break away. She finally lets go of him and he falls to the ground. She calls Hannah, and when she arrives, she says she's alright now. Hannah sees Fred on the floor, and says he's dead. Angelique says that this is how she lives now, and this is how Quentin will live with her, for eternity.

Our thoughts

John: So much for my excitement about getting some more non-parallel 1970 Collinwood time with Amy and David... though it does seem promising that Amy and Daniel may soon bring about the parallel-time return of our old pal Barnabas!

Christine: It would be nice to see some crossover between the time bands, though I suppose it could get pretty confusing. Hannah Stokes has a cool 70s pad with beaded curtain, a gargoyle, a crystal ball, and hip clothes to boot. No surprise to see The Tower card show up in a reading again.

John: Kudos to Wilfred (Fred) Block, who despite being a one-episode red-shirt, got to spend the bulk of his few minutes of screen time locking lips with Lara Parker! I don't even know if Barnabas has that much time on the smooch-clock with Angelique!

Christine: Lucky Fred, living out every young school boy's dream, up until he got the life sucked out of him.

John: Does Angelique exist in parallel time as some sort of soul-sucking vampire? Since she attributes her return to her interest in the occult, it would seem like she hasn't been around for hundreds of years... though that factoid may well be re-written when we get around to flashback-parallel time.

Christine: It makes sense now why she surrounded herself with virile young men. She must have been feeding off all of them. Apparently, Quentin was not enough for her. Of course, I was hoping we would get to see more portraits in the attic at the Old House, but why did Barnabas' portrait cause Amy to faint, why is it even at the Old House when it's always been displayed at Collinwood, and why is it showing up now?

Dark Shadows Episode 1002 4/28/70

Cyrus waits in the drawing room, when he doubles over in agony. He sees hair on his hand, and turns into John Yaeger. He hears Quentin coming downstairs and closes the drawing room doors.

Quentin is surprised to find the drawing room doors locked. He calls to Cyrus, asking if he's alright. Yaeger doesn't know what to do. Quentin calls for Trask to bring him the keys. Yaeger starts to sneak out the window, but decides it must look like Cyrus left under ordinary circumstances. He writes a quick note apologizing for leaving without explaining, and then he throws it aside, realizing he did it in Yaeger's handwriting. He does it again and leaves it on the desk. He grabs Cyrus' glasses from the floor and sneaks out through the window.

Quentin gets in with the keys and finds the note left for him. Quentin hears the front door, and Amy enters. She asks what she did wrong, that no one wants to be with her. She says Will and Carolyn didn't want her. Quentin tells her that he's happy to see her, and lets her know that Roger will be returning with Daniel soon. Amy finds the crumpled note and gives it to Quentin. He goes to toss it in the fire, but reads it first. He then compares it to the one on the desk, noting that the handwriting is similar but different.

Yaeger returns to Cyrus' lab and opens the safe. He takes out the potion, and then decides that he's not a coward. He puts the potion back without drinking it. He's not concerned about having changed without drinking the potion. He extends the knife in his cane, and says he's not afraid of anything.

Amy explains to David how she saw Dameon Edwards. Daniel doesn't believe her. Quentin finds them and reminds Amy that they checked the cellar and didn't see anyone.  He leaves them and Daniel tells her that she imagined it. She stomps off, and he tells her to tell her the story again, and he'll believe her this time.

Yaeger grabs a painting off the wall to furnish his room. He hears Sabrina calling for Cyrus, and he sneaks back out. Sabrina comes downstairs looking for Cyrus.

Yaeger returns to his room and leans the painting on the mantle. There's a knock at the door, and he invites Buffie in. She notices the painting, and says it's pretty. He tells her that it's exquisite. He asks if she's pleased to see him. She says she wondered where he had gone. He says he'd like some explanations from her. He closes the door to his room, and he asks if he frightens her. She tells him that he doesn't. He asks if she's done anything to be afraid of.

Quentin tells Sabrina to let Cyrus know that she called. She notices the painting missing from the wall, and gets off the phone with Quentin.

Yaeger confirms that Buffie went to see Cyrus, because she didn't believe or trust him. He's upset that she doesn't like him, and she tells him that she does, and she thought she proved that. He asks her if she told Cyrus that she likes a quiet man. She realizes that Cyrus told him. Yaeger says he won't make a single sound before punching her right in the face.

Buffie is bruised and her clothes are torn. She tells Yaeger that he didn't have to do that. He says he had to prove that he could be a quiet man. He rubs her shoulders, and she asks to go back to her room. She stumbles away, and he offers her the painting, suggesting that he meant no malice today. She accepts it, and thanks him. He tells her that to further prove his point, he'd like to take her out to a late-night supper. She's excited by the offer, and accepts it. He starts to laugh hysterically. He asks if she really thought he'd take her out looking like that, bruised and cut up. He says she needs to take better care of herself. He says maybe he'll take her out when she pays more attention to how she looks. He bids her goodnight, and opens the door. She leaves, bewildered.

Amy shows Quentin the papers she found where Will referred to a room in the East Wing. She asks if it's Alexis' room, but he wrote about it being empty. Quentin assures her it's just a story, and tells her to run upstairs and play with Daniel.

Yaeger takes the potion from the safe, but puts it back when he hears Sabrina coming downstairs. He sits at Cyrus' desk. She asks who he is, and who let him in. Yaeger introduces himself. She asks how he got in, and he says he used the key Cyrus gave him. He tells her he senses an emotional release in her that's trying to get out. She tells him to go, and he says he's going to wait, like Cyrus asked. She excuses herself and starts upstairs. He tries to convince her to stay, but she ignores him and leaves. He gets the potion back out and drinks it.

Our thoughts

John: I'm sorry, Cyrus and Yaeger have designed two unique handwriting styles? So let's say they really came up with that plan, and then he realizes that he's using the wrong one. Is he also going to toss the incorrect version to the floor where it will surely be discovered?

Christine: That didn't play well. I'd expect Yaeger to have his own writing style, and assume he'd be able to forge Cyrus' writing, but it exceeds believability that he'd throw the note on the floor and leave it there. Though, this is the guy who likes to look at his reflection in a tray, so perhaps it's not beyond the realm of what we could expect. I think there may be some Freudian symbolism going on with Yaeger's cane sword.

John: What's with the hairy hands on Yaeger. I don't recall the werewolf having such hairy paws! I don't even want to imagine the horrible things he did to Buffie in the commercial break, but what the hell was she thinking when she immediately agreed to go out for a night on the town with her abuser?

Christine: I think we can assume the worst. Buffie agrees to go out on the town with her controlling abuser because of traumatic bonding. She'll be back for more abuse. John Yaeger is the most evil thing we have seen on this show. Here I was thinking that loud suit he was wearing was enough of an assault before he doubled down.

John: I wasn't expecting to encounter a reverse-parallel time window! I think it would be very cool to bounce back and forth between 1970-prime and 1970-parallel time. Of course, even if they did that, you-know-who would still be chained-you-know-where for the duration!

Christine: I wonder about that. Did you notice that Barnabas' portrait was set up next to the drawing room fireplace in the end credits? What do you suppose that is all about? It's possible we caught another glimpse of the fellow who likes to lunch in Angelique's room when Quentin burst in on Amy and David.

Julia leaves the tower room and sees the silhouette of a figure. She asks who it is, and it disappears.

In the drawing room, Julia tells Quentin that she saw a caped figure in the tower room. Elizabeth comes in and asks what they're conspiring about. Julia asks her when Maggie will be back. Elizabeth says she said she'd be back as soon as she settles her family situation. She leaves, and Quentin says that yesterday Elizabeth tried to kill Maggie, and now she lies about wanting her back. Julia describes Collinwood as a house of lies. Quentin says he's got years of experience.

Roger comes in and mentions his surprise that Maggie is gone. He then sees Quentin, and says he's come back. Quentin explains that he's not a ghost of Quentin, but his descendant. Roger introduces himself, and says the old Quentin was cruel, terrifying, perhaps even murderous; and he's fascinated by him. Amy listens to them from the foyer. Quentin tells Roger that he disappeared when he was very young, only living with his great grandmother for a short time. Roger says he left behind a remarkable resemblance.

Julia comes in with coffee, and Roger suggests she could fill him in on Quentin's history. Suddenly, Quentin's music begins to play, and he is surprised. Roger asks Quentin what has frightened him. He says it's as if the music startled him.

Amy comes in and asks Quentin if he likes the music she's playing. Roger asks Amy what she's up to. She says she's just playing an old-timey record. She says that all the people who first listened to it are dead now. She asks Quentin again if he likes it, and he tells her he likes it very much. She offers to play it again, and Roger tells her not to. He takes her out and says he'll find her a good book to read. Quentin tells Julia that Amy knows who he is. Julia assures him that no one can prove his true identity.

Amy tells David that the music surprised Quentin, and that he's the same one as before. She says Jeb will protect them. David tells her that Jeb is frightened of something and he has to find out what so he can protect him. He says he needs the book and asks Amy to bring it to him. She pulls it off a top shelf behind a picture. He flips through it, hoping it has the answers he seeks.

Elizabeth talks to Jeb on the phone, suggesting that they need Roger to join them. Roger comes into the room as Elizabeth hangs up on him. Roger asks who she was talking to, and she says she was talking to Jeb about the carriage house. Roger isn't happy with him staying there, since he's a stranger. She says Carolyn likes him, and Roger says that he's not good enough for her.

Roger then asks Elizabeth why Megan is staying in Collinwood, considering her husband is accused of murdering Paul Stoddard. He says she'll ruin the house and should be sent away. He reminds her that his body was taken by someone. She says she hates to even think about it. Roger tells her that she, David and Amy have all changed, and he's going to find out what's going on in the house.

David finds what he's looking for in the book. He says if the spirit of a dead enemy manifests itself, there is a way to dispel its presence. The lights go out, and he asks Amy to bring a candle. She does, and after he lights it, a wind blows it out. David says there's a presence in the room from beyond the grave. Amy is frightened. David tells her to bring him a flashlight. He continues reading, but the book is swept off the table. He tells Amy to get it for him. She goes to pick it up and it catches fire. They watch it burn. David points out that whatever was there is not gone. The lights come back on, and Amy asks what they'll do without the book. David says he doesn't know.

Quentin is in the old house when Roger comes to see Barnabas. He says he's not there. Roger says he'll keep walking and Quentin asks what's troubling him. Roger agrees to stay, and says it might help talking to him. As a family member and a stranger, he might offer a clear perspective. Roger says everything seems strange to him. His sister, his son... he says there's some enormous horror he can't understand. Quentin has him sit down. He says he's going to tell him an incredible story that may cost Roger his life.

Elizabeth tries to call Jeb, but he doesn't answer. David tells her that it's important that they find him. Elizabeth heads out to look for him.

Quentin finishes telling Roger of the Leviathans. Roger says he knows what he must do. He's going to take David away, and Quentin says they'll kill him and David. Roger says he can't risk letting him stay. Quentin says he, Barnabas and Julia are fighting them. Roger says he doesn't want to lose his son.

David is up in his room, wishing Jeb were there. The lights go out again. A chill comes over him, and he realizes that the spirit has come back. He calls out asking who it is. The door swings open, and a body is hanging from the rafters outside his door.

Our thoughts

John: So the terror of Collinwood that scared Jeb was Father Guido Sarducci? Once again, my hopes of seeing the unseen creature are dashed by a less than impressive visual effect...

Christine: The last time we thought we saw Father Guido Sarducci was in Episode 429 in the form of Reverend Trask. I was thinking it could be the spirit of Gregory Trask, who was walled up at Collinwood in Episode 879, but since he did not die by hanging, it must be someone else.

John: I was wondering just how much Quentin was going to divulge to Roger... including his own sordid history. But I guess he just limited his tale to the Leviathans, which Roger seemed to swallow without the slightest bit of hesitation. Roger has come a long way from the man who would deny what he saw with his own eyes.

Christine: He certainly has come a long way when he thinks that David telling lies and disobeying him is a strange occurrence. I thought it was funny that David asked Amy to light a candle to read the book when he had a flashlight available all along. He sure seems to mine a lot of different information from the same page he reads every time he opens the Leviathan book.

John: Do you think the hanging man is the evil spirit who Jeb leveraged to summon the bat from hell? I think it's safe to say the smiling face of Paul Stoddard isn't on the end of the swinging rope.

Christine: It could be. The only other characters I can recall who have died by hanging are Victoria Winters and Peter Bradford, though I'd say those boots look a lot like Bradford's to me.
