Dark Shadows Episode 1145 11/13/70

Trask says he thinks they should move ahead faster. Gerard says they must not move too fast until they can prove the witchcraft is being practiced. He tells Trask that Quentin invited him to Collinwood this evening, and Trask tells him to watch him closely. Gerard pretends to get something in his eye and asks Trask for a handkerchief. He tells him that he'll return it tomorrow. 

Quentin shows Gerard his staircase. He tells him that by going up the stairs, he can travel through time. Gerard asks if he's serious. Quentin says he's been working on it for years. Gerard asks if he has the theory written down, and he says he does. He offers to go and get it, and Gerard asks him to do so. After Quentin is gone, Gerard uses the handkerchief and a totem to send a dream to Trask, a dream in which he will see an act of witchcraft.

Trask sleeps in a chair by the fireplace. He begins to dream. He sees Quentin carrying the body of Lorna, with the mark of the Devil on her forehead. Trask tells him he will have to answer to the almighty. Quentin tells him to look at his ring, because he's next. Trask bolts up from his sleep.

Quentin returns and hands Gerard a journal. He tells him to flip to page 47. He does, and starts reading. Quentin says he needs a few more days to finish it when Samantha bursts in. She's surprised to see Gerard. She tells him that she'll talk to him after Gerard leaves the house. She leaves, and Quentin says they should not let her ruin their friendship.

Samantha answers a knock at the door. It's Trask. He warns her that she must leave Collinwood immediately. She asks if he's lost his mind. He says the truth about Quentin has been revealed to him in a dream. He explains that Quentin is in league with the Devil, and adds that he was responsible for Lorna's death, and possibly Roxanne's. She says that she's always been troubled by the work he does in his laboratory. She tells him that even if he's right, she can't leave Collinwood. Trask tells her that he will keep her informed. Quentin walks in, and Trask excuses himself. She complains about Gerard being allowed in the house. He says he decides who comes and goes. She asks if her father and brother are still welcome. She admonishes him for stealing Joanna from Randall, and asks if he's seen her again. He explains that he'll never see her again, because she's dead. She asks if Randall knows, and he says he doesn't think so. She says she's sorry, and he doesn't believe her. 

Daniel can't believe the talk of witchcraft in Collinwood. Samantha tells her Trask was in a terrible state. Daniel calls him a pompous imbecile. Samanthat brings up Quentin's staircase, and Daniel asks whay she means. She explains that Quentin is building a staircase to travel through time. She tells Daniel he should consider changing his will to favor Tad. He says he needs time to think.

Gerard tells Trask he never should have gone to Samantha because of a dream. Gerard asks why he did it. Trask says that he understands how her mind works. He's sure she has already told Daniel. Gerard returns Trask's handkerchief.

Daniel confronts Quentin, asking if he's practicing witchcraft in the house. Quentin asks who planted this suggestion, and Daniel says it was Samantha. Quentin says Trask put her up to it. Daniel asks him again, and Quentin assures him he is not practicing witchcraft. Daniel asks about his staircase, and Quentin tells him it's a harmless experiment, a metaphysical attempt to expand man's horizons. He bids his father goodnight, and runs into Samantha on the staircase. He tells her that he will strangle her if she ever tries to undermine his relationship with his father again. 

Daniel asks Gerard for his advice. Gerard points out that he's best friends with Quentin, and would defend him to the death. Daniel asks if Trask's allegations are unfounded. Gerard says he'd need to see more evidence to even consider it. Daniel asks about the staircase, and Gerard says it's completely harmless. He tells Daniel he should check it out for himself.

Gerard shows Daniel the staircase. Gerard explains that the theory is by ascending the staircase, you would either go forward or backward in time. Daniel starts up the stairs. From the staircase, he sees Lorna being strangled by Quentin. He yells at him to stop, and then clutches his chest.

Christine: Unfortunately, you need to purchase the upgrade package to receive a dream with any substance, though it seemed unnecessary for Judard to send a dream when he could have just implanted a vision as he did with Daniel.

 

John: Quentin's documentation on how to on build a staircase through time isn't exactly a master's thesis. I guess I should just be thankful that the writers are not dwelling on trying to explain something that's so ridiculous on its very face.

 

Christine: I'm thinking the Stairway Into Time deserves an Andrew Lloyd Weber style musical production.  It was just two weeks ago that Quentin offhandedly mentioned his crazy idea to build a time traveling stairway to Barnabas, and now he's suddenly got the whole thing already built! How did he find time to do that when he's been chasing down dead Joanna's notes?

John: Gerard (Judah Zachery) is certainly playing all of the players in Collinwood like a fiddle. Of course it sure seems like he's going to a lot of trouble to hatch a complex revenge plot. It really wouldn't be that hard for him to exact his revenge and stop the Collins bloodline in its tracks... of course we can't have that!

 

Christine: I'm surprised Judard did not show more interest in Quentin's time traveling stairway, considering that he could use it to go back in time and serve revenge to Amadeus Collins himself. The Pesky Fly returned to annoy Lamar and Samantha today. Have you noticed that the fly tends to show up whenever the witches are up to no good? Perhaps it's really Diabolos acting as the proverbial fly on the wall to ensure his followers are creating maximum chaos and distress.

Quentin is at the train station when Angelique appears. She realizes that he's going to New York to find Amanda. He says he tried to care for her, but he loves Amanda. She tells him not to get on the train, and he says she can kill him if she wants. She promises that she won't harm him if he gets on the train, but adds that Amanda will not be as fortunate. She pulls out a doll and Amanda's brooch, suggesting that she'll die horribly and painfully, if Quentin gets on the train. She leaves Amanda's fate in Quentin's hands. He says he has no choice. Angelique is pleased. He walks away from her, and she reminds him that they will be married. She tells him to return to Collinwood and start planning their wedding. She assures him that in time he'll no longer detest her. They leave together.

Edward is writing a note when Kitty comes into the drawing room. She invites him to go walking with her, and he explains that he's expecting a personal phone call. She flatters him, and is interrupted when the phone rings. She steps out and he takes a call from the doctor to get an update on Judith's condition.

Kitty is walking in the woods when she sense someone nearby. She runs off.

Edward is sitting in front of the fireplace when there's a frantic knocking on the door. He opens it and Kitty rushes in, trembling. She says she was being watched in the woods. Angelique comes in the door and Edward goes to introduce her. Kitty accuses Angelique of spying on her, and begins to choke her.

Edward pulls her away, and Kitty asks what happened. She doesn't believe it when they say she tried to strangle Angelique. Kitty apologizes, and says she couldn't have been herself. She begs forgiveness, and Angelique accepts it. Edward takes her upstairs.

Angelique tells Quentin to join her in the drawing room to discuss wedding plans. He tells her he knows why Kitty attacked her. He says his hate for her must have been transferred to Kitty, and she too wanted to kill her. Angelique assures him that the reason she attacked her has nothing to do with him. She tells him that any time within a week will work for their wedding. He suggests a week from today, to put it off as long as possible.

Edward suggests that Kitty may have kept her feelings in check for too long. He apologizes for not accepting her offer to go for a walk. He tells her that he would really like to look after her. She says she may take a good deal of looking after, and he says he will provide it.

She says she's frightened, and starts to cry. He hugs her to console her. She asks if he'll always protect her, and he assures her that he will.

She bids him goodnight, and once he's gone, a wicked smile appears on her face.

Edward comes into the drawing room. Angelique explains that she and Quentin will be married at the end of the week. He offers congratulations, and then asks to speak to Quentin alone. Edward says that he doesn't like the way he treats Angelique, reminding him that she was victimized by Barnabas. Quentin says he will always treat his bride as he chooses. Edward than points out that Quentin found Barnabas in his coffin, and despite his killing Carl, he left Barnabas alive. He asks why he let Charity kill him. Quentin reminds Edward that he had Barnabas locked up, and he left him to let the sun to do his dirty work. Edward says he will never trust Quentin completely. Quentin points out that if Edward was such a good judge of character, he wouldn't be getting so close to Kitty. Edward asks what he means, and Quentin says he'll let him find out for himself.

Kitty tosses and turns in bed, having a nightmare. She sees Angelique refer to her as Mademoiselle, and says she will give her something so that she will never forget him. A bouquet and a book of poetry. She says it's her favorite, and opens it to read a poem. Angelique tells her that everything is so beautiful, but she should be careful, as too much good fortune will make the gods jealous of her.

Kitty sits up in bed, confused. She sees the flowers and book on the table. She says it's not all in her mind, and that something is actually happening.

Our thoughts

John: Dr. Seward is taking care of Judith? As in Count Dracula's Dr. John Seward? I wonder if that was just a throwaway bit to allow Kitty to go out on her own, or if they're hinting that Judith may be returning from her 'vacation' soon.

Christine: I hope we'll get to meet Dr. Seward. Perhaps Professor Van Helsing will arrive with him.

John: Interesting that while Angelique clearly recognizes Josette in Kitty, there's almost no reaction from her when they meet. We really need Barnabas back to prop up that love triangle.

Christine: Don't you hate when you wake up from a weird dream with a fly crawling into your mouth? KLS, the consummate professional, stays in character while the pesky fly makes the rounds around her nose, and when it aims for her eyeball, deflects it with what appears to be a worrisome gesture rather than an obvious wave of the fly. What an amazing actress! Also, I'm giving "Pesky Fly" a spot in the character list, since that little guy seems to be making numerous appearances.

John: Do we need to start a parallel countdown to the wedding of Quentin and Angelique? I'm guessing not, as I have a hunch that it's never going to happen...

Christine: I was thinking about it, but I guess we don't want to overdo the countdowns. What is up with Angelique's fascination with marrying men who don't love her? She's a beautiful witch. You wouldn't think it would be hard for her to find some attractive satan worshipper who'd appreciate her for who she is. Incidentally, I think Kitty has some of the prettiest, most sparkly costumes in the series.

Dark Shadows Episode 732 - 4/15/69

Quentin sits by the fireplace and angrily calls to Angelique. Laura comes in and asks if he's talking to himself, or reverting to his old dark tricks. She suggests that he give up trying to get rid of her. He reiterates that he saw her die in Alexandria. He grabs her throat, and she says he's hurting her. He says he's going to do far more than that, and if she's not already dead, she will be soon.

She tells him to let go of her. Suddenly, he lets go of her in pain. He's bathed in light. He describes a pain shooting through his body like fire. He sits in a chair, writhing in pain. He cries for help, and she asks how. He begs her to stop whatever she's doing. She says she's not doing anything other than watching him reap the rewards of a rich and well spent life.

 He says he doesn't want to die. She says she didn't want to die on the sacrificial alter in Egypt. She says she remembers the priest dragging her to the flames, asking her why she's crying to Quentin for help, as he was the one who betrayed her. He says he had to. She says the death he ran away from in Alexandria has finally caught up with him in Collinwood.

As she leaves, she tells him that dying is not so bad as soon as he gets used to the idea. He collapses on the cottage floor.

Rachel speaks to Trask on the phone, asking him for more time. Barnabas takes the phone from her and hangs it up. He tells her that if Trask makes her so unhappy, she mustn't talk to him. She explains that Trask thinks she's a thief. She was supposed to work for him for five years to pay him back for her training. She says that the children at the school are abused. Trask is willing to destroy their bodies to save their souls. Barnabas says she need not be frightened of Trask. He says they have a great deal to talk about, but now he must leave, and he walks out on her.

Angelique stands over Quentin's body. Barnabas arrives at the cottage, and she says he took his time. He sees Quentin and asks if he's dead. She says he's close. She tells Barnabas that Quentin will die unless Barnabas comes to his senses. She says he can only be with her, and she would kill anyone to have him. He asks if killing is her only way of proving her power over people. She says she'll be sweet, gentle and tender if that's the kind of wife he wants.

She says that she'll save Quentin if he will let her assume her proper position as Mrs. Barnabas Collins. She mentions that she raised Quentin once before, and he realizes that she was responsible, not Trask. Angelique asks if Barnabas wants David to die. She reminds him of the link between Quentin and David. She asks if she'll accept his terms, and he agrees. He tells her to make Quentin rise. She says she'll do it once she's recognized as Barnabas' fianceé.

Laura is in the drawing room when Rachel enters and introduces herself. She says she's sorry that she's meeting her under the circumstances. Rachel asks what she means, and Rachel explains that the children have been sent away. Laura is out of sorts, and collapses in a chair. She dreams of fire, and dreams of the sun God Ra, who provides her life force.

Rachel comes downstairs and opens the door. Barnabas enters with Angelique. He reluctantly introduces her as his fianceé. Rachel is surprised. Angelique asks Rachel if she'll show her around. She says she thinks they'll have a great deal in common. Rachel excuses herself and leaves them in the foyer. Angelique says she doesn't have good manners. Barnabas demands that she make Quentin rise, and she says that she will.

Rachel sits in the garden, in shock. Barnabas surprises her. She says she feels foolish assuming they were friends. He says they are friends, and he hopes that someday they will be more. She's confused. Barnabas explains that Angelique is here for a reason. He points out that things aren't always what they seem. He asks her to trust him.

Angelique kneels over Quentin's body, and calls him to return to the land of the living. His eyes open and he sits up. He asks what happened, and she tells him his health is shaky.

He says that Laura did it. She says that she was responsible. She was forced to do it by her feeling for Barnabas. She explains that they're engaged. He says she's an odd choice for Barnabas' bride to be.

She starts to leave and he grabs her arm. She threatens him if he touches her. He asks her to do him one more favor—to get rid of Laura. She says that no one could have survived the fire in Alexandria, and yet Laura did that. He begs her to help find the answer. Angelique looks into the fireplace. She says that she sees an urn, in which burns the flame of Laura's life. When the flame is extinguished, her life will be over. Quentin asks where he can find the urn. She says he asked one last favor, and she granted it. If he finds the urn, he can extinguish the flame and be rid of Laura forever.

Our thoughts

John: It's deja vu all over again... Barnabas has once again been fished in by Angelique. First stop—she has dashed his hopes with the one true object of his affection. We all know that they are not destined to live happily ever after. It might be nice if he summoned his own powers as a vampire to give Angelique a little more of a fight...

Christine: He does not appear to be taken in by her promise to be a sweet and gentle wife, probably because he's heard that from her before, and she's never been able to pull that off. Still, I've got to wonder what she's expecting from the vampire life with Barnabas. Does she intend to move back into the Old House with him and spend evenings cuddling in front of the fire?

John: So have we now learned the true origin of Laura the Phoenix? Was she born of the fire in which she was burned alive in the pyre in Alexandria? I can't recall from our history lessons how far back the Laura Collins/Murdoch lineage could be traced.

The Sun God Ra comes in the form of a fly to sit at Laura's temple. Pesky fly!

Christine: In Episode 157, we learned that Laura Murdoch Radcliffe died by fire in 1867, 100 years after Laura Murdoch Stockbridge, so it's not her first time Phoenixing, and she must be on her third cycle at the very least. Quentin really made quite a spectacle of himself in today's episode.

John: So let's say Quentin finds the urn and extinguishes the flame. If that truly cuts off Laura's timeline, that would mean no more David Collins, right? So Barnabas would have to prevent that from happening. Things are about to get interesting in Collinwood!

Christine: You're right! If Quentin snuffs Laura out, David will not be born from his great grandmother's incestuous relationship with his father! I wonder if Barnabas is aware that she is the same Laura Collins who will become David's mother, though. In a past where everyone is the spitting image of someone else in the present day, it might not immediately occur to him that she is the same person.
