Dark Shadows Episode 1070 7/31/70

Barnabas opens his coffin, and is met by the sheriff with a cross. He screams as the sheriff tells him that he knows all about him! Barnabas asks him how he knows, and the sheriff says it doesn't matter, as he pulls his gun on Barnabas.

Barnabas calls to Julia, and the sheriff steps back in fear when he sees the ghost of the young girl who we previously saw with David. He says that she's the one they saw, and tells her to stay away from him.

He turns, and Barnabas puts him in a choke hold.

Gerard and Julia are in the old house. She cries, and asks if she's done enough for him now. She asks him to go away. She asks if he's determined for her to hear the shots—the silver bullets. Barnabas comes upstairs and she's shocked to see him. She turns and Gerard is gone.

Barnabas tells her that he killed the sheriff. He says if not for Carrie, he would be dead. He says they have to get back to their own time before more police come. He says that the sheriff was armed with silver bullets, and he doesn't know how they found out about him. Julia asks him if he does, and he realizes that she betrayed him. She admits it, and says she'll do so again and again. She cries and says he's not safe. 

She tells him to go without her. He asks who has done this to her. She begs him to go to Angelique's room. Barnabas asks what Gerard did to her, and she tells him not to speak of him. He asks her to mention Gerard's name, but she cannot. She tells Barnabas that he's watching them. Barnabas commands her to look at him. She tells him that he can escape, but he tells her he won't leave without her. He says once they are back in their own time, he won't be able to get to her.

She hugs Barnabas, and asks how he can forgive her. She says she's afraid. Barnabas says that he won't leave her alone, and they must get back to their own time before dawn. He compels her to use every ounce of her will power, and she says she'll try. He says they must call Stokes and get the answers they need.

They leave together, not noticing Gerard standing outside the house.

Stokes asks Barnabas if he killed the sheriff, and he confirms that he did. Stokes says he saw Gerard once himself. Stokes tells Barnabas that he cannot help him. He says he's too old and too frightened. Barnabas says they need the clues Carolyn told them about before they leave. Barnabas says they will have a seance tonight. Stokes says he'll have no part in it. He tells Barnabas that Gerard won't allow it. Barnabas tells Julia to arrange the table. Barnabas says they will be able to go back and stop things from happening. Stokes agrees to participate. The three sit at the table. Barnabas presides over the ceremony. He asks Julia if Gerard is watching her. He tells her to concentrate, saying that Carolyn will speak through her.

Barnabas calls to the spirits of the dead, asking them to release Carolyn to speak to them. Carolyn speaks through Julia. Barnabas asks her to explain what the clues mean. She mentions "The picnic," "The night of the sun and moon," "The murder," "The unfinished horoscope," "The night I sang my song," and "Rose Cottage." Barnabas asks what it means. Julia comes to and says he's coming, and will kill him. Stokes stays he can feel something. He gets up and walks from the table. Julia breaks down crying. Stokes sees Gerard out the window. Gerard points at him. Barnabas says he saw Gerard at the window. Stokes sits down and. Julia screams. Barnabas looks for her, but cannot find her.

Gerard fondles a knife. Julia comes into the room and he holds it up before handing it to her. She asks if she must, and he nods. She agrees, and takes the knife. She holds it as if she's going to stab herself when Barnabas enters and tells her to drop it. She does.

He tells Gerard there's nothing he can do to stop them. Gerard touches Julia's forehead, and she drops to the ground. Barnabas helps her up and says he'll take her to Angelique's room, but Gerard steps out of the room and locks the door.

Barnabas sees Carrie, and asks her to help him again. She steps through a wall and a door appears. Barnabas opens it, and tells Julia that they can escape.

They step through the door, and go up a flight of stairs. He helps her along as she gasps. He sees a door, and they step through. A girl asks them who they are. It's Carrie.

Our thoughts

John: Fire up the seance tracker! Our first (and last?) of 1995! To be fair, it wasn't really much of a seance, though it did give Julia a chance to deliver dialogue in a high-pitched voice. Of course it was all for nothing, as we walked away with nothing learned about the clues she left behind.

Christine: They may not have learned anything about the clues, but I don't believe it was all for nothing. Now that they appear to have returned to 1970, they will no doubt be looking for Rose Cottage, avoiding picnics, and encouraging Carolyn not to sing any songs or consult her horoscope, and will probably fail miserably at recognizing any of those clues when they arise.

John: Barnabas and Gerard are placed in the same room at the same time, but don't have much of a confrontation. What a wasted opportunity after having him lurking in the shadows for so long!

Christine: I'm not sure what Barnabas could have done to him other than have a menacing stare down. While Gerard was able to kill Stokes instantly by showing him the sign of the horns through the window, it's interesting that he decided to spare Julia that same fate, allowing her to linger long enough to make it back through the time portal, though it remains to be seen if time heals all wounds.

John: Why exactly was Barnabas so excited to see the unfamiliar door? At first I thought it was supposed to be the door to Angelique's room, but they ended up in a nondescript hallway. The fact that Carrie seems to be alive on the other side suggests that we may have gone back in time to 1970 (albeit which 1970 remains to be seen...).

Christine: It is unclear how he knew they were back in 1970 since we didn't get to see any of the familiar landmarks, which made his ecstatic reaction somewhat jarring. If I overextend myself to try and figure it out, I'd have to say the door must have lacked the same deterioration as the rest of the house, leading him to believe they had discovered a way back, or it could be that it was the door to Angelique's room on their side, but that the house in the time they have entered has been altered.

Julia says that nothing but terrible things have happened in Collinwood. Barnabas accuses her of being against their hearing from Carolyn. She says that she is too frightened to go in to the drawing room. Barnabas goes in alone and finds Carolyn sitting at the desk. He says that her talking to him means so much to him. He touches her shoulder and she falls to the floor, dead.

He calls to Julia, who stands in the foyer, transfixed by Gerard at the top of the stairs. He asks what she's staring at, and she says nothing. He tells her to come examine the body. They return to the drawing room and there's no sign of Carolyn's body. He finds a note on the desk. He reads from it: "The night of the sun and the moon, the night Rose Cottage was destroyed, the unfinished horoscope, the night I sang my song, the picnic, the murder..." He tells Julia they're all clues. She says the note is incoherent. He says they are all significant things she wanted to tell them.

He tells her to call the sheriff, and she says they aren't supposed to be in the house. Barnabas says he's sure Carolyn is in the house. Julia says the sheriff will ask too many questions. He asks her what's wrong with her. She's disagreeing with everything he says. He demands that she go find a telephone and call the sheriff. He says he will look for Carolyn alone. She sees Gerard upstairs, and when Barnabas turns to look, she pulls him back and tells him to be careful.

Barnabas searches Collinwood looking for Carolyn's body. He wonders why the evil spirit would take it. He says if he can get back to his time, he might be able to save her from this death. He goes to the secret panel in the drawing room and opens it. He is confronted by the mysterious man. Barnabas demands that he give him Carolyn's body. He hears Julia, and before she enters, the man disappears. Julia comes in and Barnabas says he intends to keep Carolyn's body. Barnabas says that the man can't harm him. He says he's going upstairs, and asks her to bring the sheriff when he arrives. He asks her again what is wrong, and she laments being out of their own time. He assures her that they can stop the cause of everything that has happened, and heads upstairs. Julia silently calls to Gerard, and asks if he had to kill Carolyn.

Barnabas tries to enter the playroom, but the door is locked. Julia comes upstairs with the sheriff. The Sheriff says he has some questions. Barnabas says they'll have to wait. The sheriff says if they were in the foyer, no one could get a body out of the drawing room. Barnabas tells the sheriff to try the playroom door, and when he does, it opens right up. They go inside, and are shocked to see Carolyn's body lying on a table.

Barnabas asks who put the flowers in her hand. The sheriff says she's lovely. Barnabas asks him what caused the change in her 25 years ago, and the sheriff says he doesn't know. Barnabas asks for his help. He asks if he's ever heard of a Gerard. He doesn't recall. Barnabas says he saw a spirit in the house earlier tonight. He shouts that Gerard will not go unpunished. The sheriff says he needs to be more logical than that when he finds out how she died. Barnabas says he's going to have the house exorcised tomorrow. The sheriff has no objections. He leaves, and tells them that no one is to touch the body. Barnabas tells Julia to join him at Stokes', and she says she's going to stay with Carolyn's body.

After Barnabas and the sheriff leave, Gerard appears. She tells him to leave the house before there is an exorcism. He looks at her, and she asks him what she must do. He smiles.

The sheriff questtons Quentin at the old house. He says Carolyn died of heart failure. Quentin says Barnabas made the man kill her. The sheriff asks Quentin what he's talking about. Quentin says that he'll kill him, too. The sheriff asks if he's referring to Gerard. Quentin says not to mention his name. The sheriff asks why they didn't tell him Carolyn had died, and where Barnabas and Julia are. Quentin says he doesn't remember, and then says he remembers being found in the woods. He starts to call for Elizabeth. Quentin says they made him go to Collinwood, and he saw him. Quentin says he's got to find Carolyn.

Julia walks in and Quentin tells her not to come near him. She asks the sheriff to hold him so she can give hi a sedative. He does, and Julia tells him that it's for the best. She gives him a shot and tells him to sit down. Quentin says it doesn't matter, because he always wins. He says he wants to go far away, and Julia says that might be a good idea. She tells the sheriff that Quentin has been in the sanitarium, and Quentin asks him if he'll take him back there. The sheriff agrees. Quentin goes upstairs to pack. The sheriff asks Julia if Quentin believes that Gerard exists. He asks Julia why she didn't tell Quentin about Carolyn. She says that she didn't come home last night. He asks about Barnabas, and where he is. She looks outside and sees Gerard in the window. Julia tells the sheriff to return just before dusk, after he returns Quentin to the sanitarium, and she will help him.

Our thoughts

John: I wonder how much time was spent coming up with the random fragments of 'clues' explaining what happened at Collinwood, and whether those will truly amount to anything as time goes by. I can only imagine someone in Carolyn's mental state would have had a harder time creating those fragments than just writing down whatever it was truly happened 25 years ago...

Christine: I think it's likely she was thinking in fragments, but even if she weren't, she couldn't write down what happened in a straightforward manner or this storyline would have wrapped up sooner rather than later.

John: The sheriff is so close to being right. No one could get a body out of the drawing room through the foyer without someone in the foyer noticing. But he overlooks the opportunity for the body to be removed through any one of the opening windows (let alone the secret passage).

Christine: With Quentin's departure to the sanitarium, the last of the Collins family members have been removed, leaving only Barnabas and his possessed sidekick to carry the show with a cast of ghosts. We'll see if Stokes can survive the exorcism attempt or if he becomes another casualty.

John: Ah, if only the sheriff had come armed with a stake! All would finally be over for Barnabas, and they could finally etch an end-date of 1995 on his tombstone. But alas, he'll surely worm his way out of trouble once more, likely to turn the tables on the sheriff himself!

Christine: Clearly he must realize by now that Julia is possessed by Gerard. What will Barnabas do without his trusty gal pal at his side and how will he rescue her? Anything could happen in tomorrow's episode. Let's hope it does not disappoint!

As they return to the cemetery, Julia tells Barnabas she felt the evil in Collinwood. Barnabas says there's some plot to keep them and everyone else from knowing what happened at Collinwood. They enter the mausoleum and see the secret door standing open. Julia whispers that someone knows. Carolyn comes out of the secret room and says she knew they'd come back.

Julia says she wanted to show Barnabas Namoi's tomb. Carolyn asks what the coffin is doing in there, and Julia acts surprised to see that there's a secret room. They all go inside. Barnabas asks who would put a coffin in there. He asks how many secrets the room has. Carolyn says sometimes it's best not to know secrets. Barnabas asks her if she knows any secrets about the coffin. She says the coffin wasn't in the room before. She says she knows why it's there. He asks her why. She says it's waiting for him. He asks why, and she says or it's waiting for Julia. Whoever is the first to die. She tells them to get out and never come back. They leave her. Barnabas tells Julia that Carolyn doesn't know about him.

Carolyn closes the secret door, and says that it is for him.

Julia says they don't need anyone investigating them, and that they need to move the coffin tonight. They approach the ruins of Collinwood and see a blue light in the window. Once inside, they see nothing. She says it was their imagination. Barnabas says there's someone in the house. She says it's insane for them to be there without any weapons. He says if he's right about the house, no weapon could help them. She says the papers that were there yesterday are gone, and only one remains. Barnabas picks up a knife, and sees dried blood on it. Julia says it wasn't there yesterday, and he points out the diary is gone, too. They look around, and hear music playing. They follow the sound into the foyer, and it stops. Carolyn eavesdrops on them from outside.

Carolyn visits the sheriff. She tells him that he has to help her.

Barnabas and Julia go into her room upstairs. She finds her clothes in a wardrobe, just as she left them in 1970. She finds a box with her notes has been opened. She says anyone who has looked at them will know his secret.

The wind blows out their candle. Barnabas calls for any spirit in the room to show itself. Things are thrown about, and Julia runs out of the room, screaming.

A blue light glows in the drawing room until Barnabas and Julia come downstairs. They leave to go to the old house, and Barnabas says he'll return tonight—even without her. Outside the house, someone asks them what they're doing there.

Barnabas asks the sheriff what right he had to bring them in for questioning. He says the owner of Collinwood complained. Barnabas claims he's her cousin. They say they left their ID in Bangor. Barnabas points out that the old house was placed in his name in the late 60s. The sheriff asks them what they were doing yesterday. He says they were visiting the family property. The sheriff says they don't have a car, and he can book them both on vagrancy. Barnabas says he has money, and they can stay at the old house. The sheriff suggests now that they've seen the property they own, they should go. Barnabas says he's interested in restoring the house, and the sheriff says he might start, but he won't finish. He lets them go.

After they leave, the sheriff tells Carolyn he did the best he could. She says she wants to show him something she doesn't understand.

Barnabas and Julia return to Collinwood, and Julia says the sheriff may return. He says it may be their last chance to find out what destroyed Collinwood. The front door swings open, and they hear the music once more. Barnabas leads Julia upstairs. The music fades away, and they hear footsteps. Barnabas calls to them. No one answers. They hear a noise in the drawing room and rush downstairs.

Carolyn shows the sheriff a photo album. It has a photo of Julia dated Spring 1970. He asks what kind of joke she's trying to pull. He says she wouldn't look the same after 25 years. He asks if she has a photo of Barnabas. Carolyn says there are no photos—just a portrait she has which was painted in 1797.

Barnabas says whatever is in the house can materialize and dematerialize at will. They hear the music playing again. Barnabas tells Julia that music is seldom used to frighten someone, so he's going to go upstairs. He tells her to wait in the foyer, and he goes upstairs. Barnabas yells for her to watch out as a bust topples over from the upstairs railing. She runs out of the house and Barnabas follows her. They look back into the house and see a strange man in the window.

Our thoughts

John: They make a big deal out of needing to move Barnabas' coffin, but they never get around to it... without extra helpers like Willie around, they can't just say someone else took care of that. Unless of course they plan on getting out of 1995 before daybreak arrives...

Christine: There was no time to move the coffin because they were too busy repeatedly running up and down the stairs at Collinwood. With the present condition of the house, I'm surprised the whole staircase didn't collapse! It would have been great to hear them try and explain themselves to the Sheriff if he had caught them lugging a coffin around.

John: Another new tune comes along, threatening to be the latest annoying earworm. Though as Barnabas so assuredly states, music is seldom used to frighten someone. I guess he doesn't spend a lot of time listening to Robert Cobert's body of work...

Christine: I seem to remember Quentin's theme giving a few family members a bit of a scare back when his grumpy ghost was lurking around.

John: Interesting introduction to a new character—Gerard—is he alive or dead? Related to someone we know? Or a fresh creation out of the writers bag 'o tricks? I guess we can assume he's somehow responsible for the destruction of Collinwood. I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

Christine: He looks even more surly than the ghost of Quentin did! If he's the source of the blue light and the furniture tossing, I'm guessing he's dead. While the destruction of Collinwood is an interesting turn of events, I can't help feeling disappointed that we haven't had the chance to reconnect with our well known Collins family members from 1970, which seems unlikely to happen any time soon now that Julia and Barnabas have taken on yet another mission to save the Collins family and new characters are being introduced.
