Dark Shadows Episode 1036 6/15/70

Julia arrives at the old house with a stake and mallet. She takes them into into the secret room and opens Barnabas' coffin. She finds him sleeping inside. She places the stake over his heart and raises the mallet to strike. Julia from our time band strikes parallel time Julia with a fireplace poker, knocking her out.

Will is upstairs at Collinwood at dawn. He wonders where Julia went, and realizes she may have gone to the old house. He starts to head out when he runs into Angelexis. She asks if it's true Cyrus took Maggie. She gives Will the third degree and he tries to excuse himself. He finally just leaves abruptly.

Julia closes the secret panel at the old house, and on her way out, there's a knock at the door. Bruno comes in and asks her what she's doing there. She says she came on an errand. He notices that her hair and clothes are different. Julia says she was on her way into town. He asks her where Will is, and she says she doesn't know. Bruno says he wants to borrow some money from him. He asks her for a five-hundred dollars. He says she's got plenty after he, Angelique and others slipped her money for her cooperation. He says she doen't sound like herself, either. She assures him that she is who she is. Bruno attributes it to the time they've been apart. He leaves. She goes back into the secret room and realizes that she's killed her parallel counterpart. She wonders what she'll do.

Will returns home and notices the secret room panel is open. Julia steps out and he pulls a gun on her. He says he figured he'd find her here. She tells him she's not Hoffman, that she's a friend of Barnabas. She points into the room and says Hoffman is in the other room, dead. He goes in and is shocked. Julia explains that she's from another time. He realizes that she's the Julia that tried to cure Barnabas, explaining that Barnabas told him. He asks how she got there, and he says she came through the portal in Angelique's room. She arrived just in time to save Barnabas.

Angelique calls her father to see if he's seen Julia. She says that Julia told her she had discovered something about Barnabas.

Bruno enters and she hangs up the phone. He asks her where Will is, and she says he was here but he left. He asks her where Quentin is, and she says he's probably sleeping after last night. He asks what she means. She tells him how Cyrus abducted Maggie. He doesn't believe it. She says it was a man named John Yaeger, but he and Cyrus are the same person. He thanks her for the clarification.

She says they were working on an experiment. Bruno says he was working on an experiment with Cyrus. Angelexis tells him that Cyrus and Sabrina are both dead. He says it's a terrible shame and smiling, he rushes out.

Julia tells Will that she has been interested in Barnabas for a long time—as a doctor. She wonders if Hoffman told Angelique Barnabas' secret before she came to the house to kill him. She suggests that Hoffman may have written a note, and ask him to go check.

She realizes that he has to stay with Barnabas to protect him, and decides to go on her own, disguised as her parallel-self. She says she'll put on her clothes and fix her hair. He tells her it's risky.

Bruno goes to Cyrus' lab and searches for the combination to his safe.

Julia comes to Hoffman's room, wearing her clothes. She searches for a note. She isn't having any luck when Angelique comes in and tells her that she knew they would meet sooner or later. She asks he what happened. Julia says she told her on the phone about Cyrus and Yaeger. Angelique asks her about the information she found out about Barnabas. She demands that she tell her everything. Julia says she meant that Barnabas called Barnabas, and that's how he knew to go to the farm. Angelique asks where he is now, and she says he went into town. Angelique tells her to resume following him, and this time keep in touch with her.

Bruno got the safe opened, but can't find any cash. He finds a book labeled "To be presented unread to Quentin in the event of my death." He sits down to read it.

Julia tells Will that Angelique didn't know about Barnabas. She adds that they knew who was holding Maggie. Will asks if she wants to change out of the clothes, and Julia suggests that she'll continue to impersonate the parallel Hoffman. Will warns her that she'll slip sooner or later. She says it's the perfect way to find out what Angelique is doing. He disagrees.

Bruno finishes reading the book and calls Collinwood. Angelique asks him where he ran off to. He says he was visiting friends and gathering info. He tells her that he knows who murdered Angelique.

Our thoughts

John: Who knew that Dark Shadows was the real source of Julia & Julia! I'm looking forward to all kinds of fun of our friendly neighborhood Julia pretending to be the cold, callous Julia of parallel time!

Christine: I look forward to Julia's impersonation as well, but expect it will be short lived. I don't think she can pull it off the way she tends to overemote. I don't understand why she doesn't just wait until loverboy wakes up in his coffin so they can head back to their own time together. Maggie has been saved, so why get involved in the drama of parallel time when they have their own drama to keep them busy? Funny how she clarified her interest in Barnabas was from a doctor's perspective. Yeah, right!

John: Can you believe that Barnabas didn't do anything other than lie in the coffin today? That may have been the episode's biggest surprise!

Christine: Perhaps he's had some coffin rest days written into his contract. He did just make a movie, after all, and probably needs some down time.

John: It seems odd to me that a servant like Hoffman would be rolling in dough due to payoffs from the likes of Angelique and Bruno. Seems to me that if she liked her job, she'd keep her mouth shut! Well, now that we have an alternate Hoffman, I expect we'll be hearing all about her misdeeds...

Christine: It will be interesting to find out what Bruno has learned from Cyrus' journal and how he intends to make money from it. Do you suppose Cyrus killed Angelique? Nice to see that Alexis had a chance to pick up a groovy new dress and trendy hairstyle while in Bangor.

Maggie hears footsteps coming downstairs, and hides in the wardrobe. Barnabas comes in and finds Maggie's brush. He looks around the room, and leaves.

Maggie hears the footsteps going upstairs and leaving. She comes out of the wardrobe, and sneaks out of the cell. She sees Yaeger on the stairs and screams. He asks if she thought he forgot about her, and jumps down and grabs her. He says she should have come away with him, but now it's too late.

Barnabas tells him to let her go. Yaeger tells him to stay back. Barnabas says to let her go or he'll never leave this place alive. Yaeger says he knows what little time he has left, but he'll go out his own way. He throws Maggie aside and grabs his cane, extending the blade. Barnabas warns him that his weapon will do him no good. He stabs Barnabas in the chest.

Barnabas pulls it out of his chest. Yaeger asks what kind of creature he is, and Barnabas says he will never know. They grapple and Barnabas strangles him.

Maggie gets up and calls Barnabas. She comes into the room, and Barnabas says Yaeger will never harm her again. She screams when she sees his body, and they watch as he changes back into Cyrus. Barnabas takes Maggie out.

Julia comes downstairs as Carolyn enters. She asks if he spoke to Quentin, and Carolyn says he's chartered a plane, and should be home within an hour. He was terribly upset with the news. Barnabas comes in with Maggie and brings her into the drawing room. Julia asks if he found her at the farmhouse, and Carolyn asks if she was Yaeger's prisoner. Barnabas tells them that Yaeger is dead. Julia asks how, and he says they must tend to Maggie. He directs Julia to get her a blanket.

A car arrives at Collinwood, and Quentin rushes in. He asks Maggie what happened. Barnabas says she's in shock. He says Yaeger didn't hurt her. Quentin asks if anyone has called a doctor, and tells Julia to contact Cyrus. Barnabas says he won't be able to reach Cyrus, and Quentin tells her to call Dr. Ford. Barnabas asks to speak to Quentin privately. Quentin apologizes for not believing him. Barnabas tells Quentin that Cyrus is dead. Quentin asks how. Barnabas offers to take him where he is. Quentin asks if Yaeger killed him. Barnabas says that Yaeger is also dead. He tells Quentin that he must come with him to the farmhouse.

Carolyn tells Julia that the doctor is with Maggie. Julia asks why Quentin came back without Alexis. Carolyn says she doesn't understand why Quentin left with Barnabas. She says she thinks Barnabas knows more than he's telling the rest of them.

Julia tells Angelique on the phone that Yaeger is dead and Maggie is back in Collinwood. She adds that she found out something concerning Barnabas, and she'll tell her more when she returns.

Quentin says it's incredible, and no one could imagine it. Barnabas describes killing Yaeger, and how he and Maggie both saw him transform into Cyrus. He points out that Cyrus was the one who told him where to find Maggie. Quentin says that this was his secret experiment. Quentin points out that someone should have noticed that Cyrus and Yaeger were never in the same place at the same time. Barnabas says that the authorities may have an issue with Cyrus being dead at his hands. He says he's willing to abide by whatever Quentin wants. Quentin says that he thinks it's best that they reveal the whole story.

Parallel time Julia opens the door to Angelique's room, and sees herself and Quentin inside. She explains that she tried to dissuade him, but he had made up his mind, and had to go to the other time to save Maggie. Quentin tells her that Barnabas doesn't realize that he too is in danger. He says he's as good as dead if they find out he's a vampire. Parallel time Julia realizes that Barnabas' secret is that he's a vampire.

Julia reads up on vampires in a book from the Collins Library of the Supernatural, getting details on how to kill one by driving a stake through its heart. She hears Carolyn tell him that it's impossible for someone to be two people at the same time, and Julia takes a compact mirror out of Carolyn's purse in the drawing room. She uses it to confirm that Barnabas casts no reflection. He bids Carolyn goodnight, and leaves. Julia realizes that she has her confirmation.

Barnabas settles into his coffin for the night, and closes the lid.

Our thoughts

John: I'm a bit disappointed that after the big build-up the other day, Barnabas didn't even have his cane with him when he confronted Yaeger. Makes you wonder what that whole my-cane-is-tough monologue was all about.

Christine: Exactly. What happened to my-cane-is-bigger-than-your-cane? I barely got through a bowl of popcorn and Yaeger/Longworth was already dead. Too easy!

John: Now I get it. It's not so much a parallel time door, but a deus ex machina door. Need a character to know some detail there's no way they could arrive upon naturally? Open the deus ex machina door! Need a character to travel from one time band to the next for any reason? Open the deus ex machina door!

Christine: I was disappointed that Dr. Hoffman, of all people, would not recognize the importance of not having the kind of conversations in that room that could put Barnabas at risk, knowing full well that someone could be watching. It was a nice touch to have Julia discover that Barnabas was a vampire the same way that Dr. Hoffman did back in Episode 288.

John: I almost think we should have a Friday afternoon 'about-to-stake-a-vampire' counter. Who do you think will stop her... Barnabas himself? Carolyn? I think we might see Will return just in time to help out his old pal Barnabas.

Christine: I agree. We could call it "Raising the Stakes." While not a stake counter, here's a blog search for mallet that returns many fine staking moments on the show if you are interested in reviewing them. Ah...such good memories. The Loomis' are the ones entrusted with guarding him, so I expect either one or both of them will prevent the hammer drop on Monday.

Elizabeth walks into the drawing room to find Yaeger standing over Sabrina's body. He approaches her, saying she's next, but she backs out of the room and locks the door. She tries the phone but it's been pulled out of the wall. Julia comes downstairs and Elizabeth tells her to call the police; that she saw Yaeger kill Sabrina.

Yaeger realizes that he must go to the lab and switch back to Cyrus.

Julia and Elizabeth hear glass breaking. Elizabeth says he'll try to break into the house, as he was trying to kill her. Julia says she's sure he's gone. She confirms that Sabrina is dead. Julia says she'll go call the police from the old house. She tells Elizabeth to get a gun and keep it, and she'll be alright. Elizabeth opens a drawer and pulls out a pistol.

Julia calls the police from the old house. She explains that the murderer is John Yaeger. As she goes to leave, she realizes that no one is home, and she can scope out the secret room Barnabas went into. She pulls the bookcase open and goes inside. She sees a coffin, and without hesitation, she opens it. It's empty. She closes the lid and wonders why he would keep a coffin.

She leaves the secret room, and closes the bookcase panel. As she's leaving, Barnabas enters. She tells him that Yaeger murdered Sabrina at Collinwood.

Yaeger arrives at the lab and opens the safe. He drinks the last of the antidote as the police pound on his laboratory door.

He puts on his lab coat and opens the door. The detective asks what took him so long, and he says he was upstairs in his sleeping quarters. He says he's looking for Yaeger. Cyrus says he's out of town, and asks why he's looking for him. The detective says murder. Of another one of his employees. Cyrus says Sabrina was his fiancee. He breaks down. The detective says he thought Yaeger might come back to the lab. Cyrus says it's been a dreadful shock. He agrees Yaeger should be caught. He tells the detective where Yaeger took rooms. He says he'd work for him as a chemist when he was in town. Cyrus starts to say something, and hesitates. He then asks where the murder took place, and he says it was Collinwood. Cyrus says he'll call if he sees Yaeger. The detective says he'll station an officer outside in case he returns, and warns Cyrus that he's a madman.

Barnabas asks Elizabeth if anyone has notified Cyrus. She says the police sent someone, but he's out of town. Barnabas asks her why Yaeger and Sabrina were there. She says she doesn't know. He asks if she knew Yaeger had threatened Maggie. He says he's sure Maggie is somehow involved in all this. He wonders where she is. He escorts Elizabeth to the old house.

Maggie struggles with her ankles and wrists tied. She rolls out of bed and crawls to the wall where she tries to wear through her bindings.

Cyrus worries that Maggie must be found. He decides to call Barnabas.

Barnabas hangs up with the sheriff, and says that Cyrus is back. The phone rings and it's Cyrus. He tells him he knows where Maggie is. He says Yaeger has her imprisoned in the basement of the Wicks farm. Barnabas asks how he knows. Cyrus pauses, and says that he can't say, but he has to hurry because Yaeger may be on his way.

Cyrus realizes that he has no explanation for how he knew where Maggie was. Cyrus reaches into a drawer and pulls out a pistol. He says goodbye to John Yaeger, and brings the gun up to his head. He drops it, struggling...

Julia can't believe Maggie is a prisoner of Yaeger. Elizabeth says she can't understand how Cyrus knew. She's worried about Barnabas. Julia says she doesn't think Yaeger will be there. Elizabeth says she's going to tell the police.

Maggie gets out of her restraints, and is able to get out through the open door. She hears someone upstairs and returns to her cell. She hears footsteps coming downstairs, and hides in the wardrobe. Barnabas comes in and finds Maggie's brush. He looks around the room, and leaves.

Our thoughts

John: I wonder why Yaeger didn't just open one of the full windows in the drawing room and step outside... instead requiring someone to locate a glass-breaking sound effect.

Christine: How would Julia have known that it was safe to enter the drawing room and claim he was miles away if she hadn't heard the sound of glass breaking? The bandage on his hand would seem to indicate he broke the window bare handed.

John: Good to know that in parallel Collinwood, there's also a gun in a drawer in the drawing room. And maybe not just Collinwood, but all of Collinsport! Of course Cyrus wasn't fast enough on the draw to take out Yaeger...

Christine: I found it interesting that parallel Collinwood has an ambulance to remove the dead and that they don't receive same day burial as they do in the original band of time. I am confused by how much Cyrus can remember of Yaeger's actions. He seemed surprised to hear that he killed Sabrina, yet he knew exactly where to tell Barnabas to find Maggie.

John: Oh, come on. There's no way Barnabas wouldn't call Maggie's name as soon as he set foot in the farmhouse... I'm sure it's all just a big setup for his rescuing Maggie tomorrow.

Christine: Exactly what I was thinking. Maggie also should have realized that Yaeger would have been yelling and making a fuss to find her gone, but we'll chalk her lack of observance up to being traumatized. Pop the popcorn and break out the pop-up bar, and hope we're in for a good cane fight tomorrow!

At the old house, Barmanas calls for Will. He opens the passage to the secret room, not realizing that Julia is watching him from the window.

Julia wonders what's inside the secret room, and decides to come back later when Barnabas is out of the house.

Barnabas decides if he finds whose hiding Maggie he'll use his cane on them.

Maggie tries to pick the lock on her cell door, but is unsuccessful. She realizes that she can't give up and tries again.

Elizabeth and Sabrina arrive back at Cyrus' lab. Elizabeth invites her for dinner, and Sabrina declines the invitation, and thanks her for taking her to a concert. Elizabeth tells her that Cyrus will be back soon. She says she doesn't understand young people... Maggie running off... Cyrus going away. Yaeger shows up and bids them good evening. Elizabeth asks who he is, because they haven't met. Sabrina introduces him. He adds that he's a close associate of Cyrus. He and Elizabeth exchange pleasantries. She then tells them goodnight, and tells Sabrina that she'll let her know if she hears from Maggie.

Yaeger asks Sabrina what they were doing in the lab. She says she left her purse in the lab, referring to him as Cyrus. He grabs her and tells her never to call him that name.

He opens the safe and takes out some cash. He then opens up his wardrobe, and tells her to send his clothes to New York. He writes a check for her to use to get a certified check for John Yaeger. She points out that it's his whole account. She asks him not to do it. He asks if she'll miss him, or just the good doctor. He adds that Cyrus is never coming back, and leaves.

Julia serves Elizabeth tea. Julia asks if she has seen Barnabas. Elizabeth says he's out searching for Maggie. Julia says she wonders why Quentin didn't check Barnabas' background more thoroughly. Elizabeth reminds her that he is a member of the Collins family, and the name means integrity. Julia leaves, and Liz dozes off. She has a dream of Cyrus' lab. She and Sabrina are there, and papers are strewn about. Sabrina screams when she sees Maggie's dead body in the room with them. Elizabeth bolts awake. She leaves the house, not telling Julia where she's going.

Maggie continues to work on the lock, ultimately getting it to open. Just outside the door, Yaeger stops her and says he hopes she's not thinking of leaving. He says she's a liar and hypocrite. She says she heard someone upstairs, thought it was him, and when she tried the door it was open. He picks up the device she used to pick the lock. He grabs a rope and says he'll cure her restlessness. He ties her hands and she pleads with him. He doesn't realize that Sabrina is just outside the door, listening to Maggie's pleas. She begs Yaeger not to hurt Quentin.

In the old house, Elizabeth asks Barnabas if he found any trace of Maggie. He says he didn't realize she also though she was missing. Elizabeth tells him she had a dream. She was in Cyrus' lab with Sabrina, where they found Maggie's dead body. Elizabeth says that maybe it's because they saw John Yaeger there. Elizabeth asks if he thinks there's a connection between Yaeger and Maggie's disappearance. He says he's going to find out.

Yaeger tells Maggie that she can yell all she wants, as no one will hear them. He kisses her against her will.

Sabrina hears a struggle and leaves.

Yaeger puts Maggie in her bed, and goes outside the room. He doesn't see anyone, but he finds the check he made out for Sabrina. He realizes that she followed him, and knows about Maggie.

Barnabas searches Cyrus' lab for clues. He sees clothes in a wardrobe that must be Yaeger's because he decides they wouldn't belong to Cyrus. He realizes that there's a connection between the two men, and it might lead him to Maggie.

Sabrina arrives at Collinwood and calls for Quentin or Elizabeth. No one comes, so she picks up the phone and starts to dial. She's grabbed from behind by Yaeger, who throws her into the drawing room and closes the door behind them.

She asks him why he's there, and he asks her the same. She says she came to see Elizabeth. He stops her and asks if she's going to the bank with his check. She says she was, and it's in a safe place, locked in a drawer in the lab. He pulls out the check and says he found it on the stairway to the basement. She asks what he's going to do, and he says she knows. She asks what he's planning to do to Maggie. She then realizes he's going to kill her. She calls him Cyrus, and Yaeger says there's not a trace of Cyrus in him, and starts choking her.

Elizabeth walks in as he drops Sabrina's unconscious body on the ground.

Our thoughts

John: Since when is Barnabas' cane all-powerful? I guess they had to set expectations how he'd be able to take out someone like John Yaeger...

Christine: I expect they are setting us up to find out who has a bigger cane. I thought we were going to lose Barnabas as he tripped on his way out of the Old House.

John: Did anyone else do a spit-take when Elizabeth claimed that the Collins name means integrity? We've yet to visit that particular time band.

Christine: The Collins family likes to maintain their illusions no matter the time band.

John: When are women going to learn that there's no lying to John Yaeger. At least Maggie is somewhat safe in that he loves her... Sabrina, on the other hand, might not live through the week.

Christine: I think the fact that Yaeger loves Maggie makes her less safe, but I suppose it's a matter of perspective.
