Dark Shadows Episode 1113 9/30/70

Gerard tells Julia that he has something that belongs to her, and she starts to say "My ... " and follows up with, "word." He says he found it in the playroom two nights ago, and found its mate on her dresser when he delivered her luggage. He points out that it can't be a coincidence. He asks who she is, and what she wants in Collinwood. She asks what gives him the right to question her. He says that Gabiel found it, and he could ask her. He asks if she was the woman Daniel claimed to see in the room, and she reiterates that she arrived today. He says when he saw the earring, he had a feeling it belonged to a woman who didn't dress as a woman normally would. She asks him if he was a psychic. He says not professionally. She explains that she found the other earring on the bureau in the room. He tells her that the mystery will be solved, and soon. Ben arrives, and she says she'd like to hear more stories about their father. Gerard excuses himself and goes upstairs.

Julia tells Ben that Gerard suspects something. Ben says he can't find Barnabas' coffin, and there were attacks in the village last night. Attacks like those they haven't seen in Collinwood since 1797. Ben says there's one place he'd be sure to go, and he'll see if he can find Barnabas there.

Barnabas goes into Josette's room in the old house. He speaks to her portrait, explaining to her that he must begin a new life, and telling her goodbye. He takes her portrait off the wall, and turns it to face the fireplace. He turns to see Ben in the room with him. Barnabas says he returned to the room for the last time. He will make an existence without Josette. Barnabas tells Ben he will not involve him this time. Ben pleads for him to talk with Julia from 1970. Barnabas says he does not share Ben's naivete. He says that she let Barnabas out of his coffin in 1967. He tells him he's not safe, and Barnabas says that word has no meaning for him. 

Gerard tells Leticia that Flora has written asking him to come see her at Rose Cottage. She calls him a heartbreaker, and he promises not to break hers. He tells her he made a new life for her bringing her to Collinwood. She says he gave her to Flora like she was a present. Gerard tells her that she's going to be famous — she'll be in a book. He tells her there's money to be made there, and they're not leaving until they get it. Julia enters, and Gerard introduces her to Leticia. Leticia says she needs to work on Flora's horoscope. 

Gerard leaves, and Julia asks her if she lives at Collinwood. She explains that she lives in Rose Cottage with Flora. Julia asks her about her ability to see the future. She says perhaps. Julia asks if she could see 1970, and Leticia says that she can only see a day or two into the future. Julia asks her to try. Leticia does, and says she smells smoke. She describes dust, and then stops. Julia wonders if that means Collinwood was destroyed. She can't understand what happened to Barnabas.

In 1970, Barnabas is sitting by the fire in the old house. Stokes comes to see him, and says he's sorry that Barnabas wasn't well enough to attend the funeral. Stokes says he shouldn't have gone to Europe, but he thought he had time to bring back the one man who could exorcise Gerard. He mourns the dead — Elizabeth, David, Daphne, Hallie... Barnabas says the creatures Gerard summoned from the grave prevented him from following Julia onto the stairs. He says he needs to find out where Julia went, and how to get there. Stokes says that if the stairs brought them from 1995, that must be where Julia is now. Barnabas says he's sure the stairs lead to the past, where this all began. He says the family journals mentioned Quentin building a time-traveling staircase in 1840. Stokes says he assumes Barnabas will try to use the I Ching again. 

Carolyn comes in, and mentions her mother is away with David and Hallie. She says she'll spend the weekend at the beach house. Barnabas says they can decide that later. She then asks him what happened to Collinwood, and who the men were who set fire to it. She then says that was just a dream — a nightmare. She says she's going to go upstairs to pack a bag. She goes upstairs and Stokes says she must get to Windcliff. Stokes asks about the 'other' problem, and asks where he is. Barnabas says he's upstairs.

In Josette's room, Quentin prepares to put his head in a noose. Carolyn comes in and screams for Barnabas. Quentin says he must join Daphne. Barnabas and Stokes run in and Quentin attacks Stokes, blaming him for Daphne's death. Barnabas sends Carolyn away. Quentin says the children were dead, and Daphne died in his arms. He said he could have saved them. Barnabas tries to calm him, and Quentin says he won't return to Collinwood. Barnabas tells Stokes to take Quentin to Windcliff.

Barnabas picks up his I Ching wands. Stokes tells him Quentin will be better off at Windcliff. Barnabas says he'll be as lost as he is now in 1995. Barnabas asks Stokes to take care of Carolyn. Stokes reminds him if the I Ching works, someone must stay in the old house to protect his body. Barnabas says Willie Loomis will. Stokes goes to get Carolyn to take her to the beach house. Barnabas goes into the secret room and tells Roxanne (through her coffin), that she'll be safe. He says he's going to go back in time to try and change her fate. 

Barnabas tosses the I Ching wands. Stokes says it's the 49th hexagram. Stokes tells him to visualize a door with that hexagram, and concentrate on it until the door opens. Barnabas does. He says it's opening. Stokes tells him to rise and go through the door. Barnabas sees a tombstone showing that Julia died on October 6, 1840. He says it can't be.

Our thoughts: 

John: While it was cool to pop back to 1970 (one last time?), I'm a little disappointed that they ignored some of the major questions, like: how did Barnabas escape the clutches of Gerard's zombies? Where's Gerard now, since we know come 1995 he'll still be hanging around the place? How did Elizabeth die, because as far as we know, she wasn't there the night of the destruction (and wasn't she with Roger, meaning that he too should be dead)? While it's obvious the writers could, through the 1840 sequences, alter the future to save all who died in 1970, it certainly seems more likely that they saw the writing on the wall and knew that the end was near for them to basically leave present day in what appears to be an irrecoverable mess.

Christine: Barnabas escaped because he is undead, and therefore cannot be killed by zombies. I imagine Gerard is still lurking about Collinwood with his zombie friends. I was also surprised to hear that Elizabeth died. I thought that was a very lazy and unacceptable piece of writing for such an instrumental character. I don't know if the writers knew the end was near, but they may have sensed Dan Curtis was exhausted and challenged to squeeze out new storylines. It could be that returning to the past was meant to be Barnabas and Julia's only way of altering history to prevent the destruction of Collinwood.

John: So despite all of their efforts, it looks like 1995 will play out just as it was when B&J dropped in; making their attempts to change the future a complete and utter failure. In retrospect, one has to wonder why Gerard chose to hold off on exacting his revenge on Collinwood (for reasons as yet to be determined) for 130 years... Why wait so long? Perhaps before we're through, we'll get a scene where Gerard declares that in 130 years, he'll get his revenge! And what are the chances we ever hear more about the mysterious European who could have exorcised Gerard... perhaps a descendant of Count Petofi?

Christine: After all Quentin has gone through in his lifetime, it's difficult to believe that these catastrophic events, while traumatic, would cause him to completely break from reality. 

John: Damn! Barnabas makes it clear that he isn't even going back in time to save Julia — he's going to save his new girlfriend, Roxanne! Of course, he's feeling guilty now that he sees Julia is on deck to die, but really, whether she lives or dies, as long as he can get his hands on Roxanne, he'll likely be happy in 1840!

Christine: That's not what I heard him say at all. He told Stokes he was determined to risk using the I Ching to find his way back to save Julia, as well as change history to prevent the destruction of Collinwood. Granted, he also wants to prevent Roxanne from becoming a vampire, though that may be hard to do if it turns out he is the one responsible for that happening. It was quite unexpected to hear 1840 Barnabas say goodbye to Josette and assert he must begin a new life without her, when all other Barnabas reincarnations professed undying love and obsession for her. Incidentally, it is always amazing to see that Barnabas tosses the desired 49th hexagram of change on the first try every time.

Dark Shadows Episode 1107 9/22/70

In the old house, Sebastian comes out of the shadows, grabs the mallet, and opens the secret panel. Inside the secret room, he uses the mallet to break the chains, and opens Roxanne's coffin. He points a gun at Roxanne's chest. He suddenly notices someone in the room with him—the ghost of Gerard. He shoots at him several times, but the bullets have no effect. 

Barnabas comes in and Sebastian says that he's gone. Sebastian says he wanted to end it, but he wouldn't let him kill her. Barnabas asks how he knew Roxanne was there, and Sebastian says he saw Willie in the crypt. Barnabas demands that Sebastian tell him exactly he knows about her. Sebastian removes a scarf and shows Barnabas the bite marks on his neck. He says he was under her power until Maggie... he says he hates Roxanne and will destroy her. Barnabas stops him, and says he won't let her harm Maggie. He tells Sebastian to forget Roxanne. Barnabas closes the coffin. He asks Sebastian if Roxanne ever mentioned Gerard Stiles. He says she did, but he can't remember what she said.

Daphne tells Barnabas that she remembers a Roxanne Drew in Collinsport. She says she was pretty, and she lived with her father. There was some mystery about her; she changed after... and then she senses Gerard's presence. She begs Barnabas not to ask her any more. Barnabas and Quentin tell Daphne that she's going to leave Collinwood tonight. She says she cannot go while the children are lost. Quentin tells her they're leaving, and Barnabas says that once he finds the children, he'll send them to her.

Quentin tells Daphne that Gerard can't take her from him now. He tells her they're both going into a whole new world, and pours them each a drink. They toast to their life together. After taking a sip, Daphne collapses, and then Quentin falls to his knees. He sees Gerard enter the room, and asks him what he's doing to them.

Barnabas and Julia go upstairs and find Daphne, unconscious but alive. Barnabas goes to look for Quentin. 

Carolyn comes downstairs dressed all in black. Barnabas asks her if she's seen Quentin. And then he asks her whey she's dressed in black. She tells him that there will be a funeral tonight. Barnabas asks her whose funeral, and the asks if it's Qunetin's. He asks her to user her second sight to tell him where Quentin is. She says she sees the forest. She adds that he's dying, but doesn't know it. She says no one can help him, because Quentin doesn't want to live.

In the forest, Quentin asks Gerard why he ever thought they were enemies.

Barnabas says that nothing would make Quentin want to die, not even Gerard. He tells her that everyone's lives are at stake. She says that she cannot stop anything. Barnabas says that he will find Quentin, and leaves the house to search for him.

Julia sits with Daphne. Daphne calls to Quentin, and Julia asks her where Gerard took Quentin. She says that Quentin is not in this time now—he lives in Gerard's.

Gerard takes Quentin to an unmarked grave. Quentin says he knows why it's unmarked, but can't remember. He then reviews names on surrounding graves, recognizing them as pirates Gerard knew. Quentin sees the dates from 1840, and wonders how he knows these things. Gerard puts his hand on Quentin's shoulder. He tells Gerard that when he looks at him, it all doesn't seem so strange. Gerard gives him a shovel, and Quentin begins to dig up the unmarked grave.

Quentin finishes digging the grave, exposing a coffin. He tells Gerard that it's Quentin Collins' coffin, and Gerard smiles.

Carolyn comes in to see Daphne with a large box, and tells Barnabas and Julia that she wants to see her alone. They leave the two of them.

Daphne asks her if Gerard sent the dress, and if she must put it on now. She asks Carolyn if the children will die, too, and refuses to put on the dress. Barnabas demands that Carolyn open the door. She does. He asks Carolyn what she told Daphne. Carolyn says she pities them for thinking they can change anything. She tells him that Gerard will wave his green flag, and walks out. Barnabas asks Daphne what Carolyn brought her.

Quentin says he doesn't want to look in the coffin because he'll remember. He says it's empty because Quentin was supposed to be buried in 1840. He can't remember why he wasn't. He asks Gerard if it's time now, and he nods.

Daphne tells Julia that he knows, and there's nothing she can do. Julia calls for Barnabas.

Quentin says he won't go if Daphne won't be there. Gerard gives him a stern look, and Quentin realizes he can't run away from him. He turns and sees Carolyn. He calls her Leticia. She asks if he remembers the night they sang together, and he says that he does. She kisses him, and leaves. Quentin lists off the names of women he remembers. Gerard points at the coffin.

In her room, Daphne cries.

Gerard finishes filling the grave. Six feet under, Quentin has been buried alive.

Our thoughts: 

John: Everything truly seems to be shaping up for our 1840 flashback. Now that it's been established that Roxanne has been a vampire since back then... it's only a matter of time before we're transported back. How do you think it will be? I Ching? Time-Traveling Staircase? Phone Booth outside the Circle K?

Christine: Quentin may be going by way of time traveling coffin, but I expect the dynamic duo to find their way back by Quentin's Patented Time-Traveling Staircase. It was interesting that Sebastian said he was not under Roxanne's control since she started working on Maggie, yet he was still having to wear a stylish scarf. It could be because Roxanne's bites leave big, gory holes that take a long time to heal.

John: So nice to see more than one expression from Gerard in an episode, let alone seeing him somewhat active. Even without speaking to Quentin, it's the closest thing he's had to an actual conversation! And he even did some manual labor today, filling in Quentin's grave!

Christine: Gerard was all smiles and seemed extremely pleased to finally have things going his way. So, are we to believe that Quentin actually lived in 1840 and somehow became immortal during that time period? 

John: If ever a trademark Collinwood quick-disinterment was going to come in handy, it's with Quentin buried alive!

Christine: I wonder if this will be what causes Quentin's mind to snap and sends him to live out his days at Windcliff until he finally escapes in 1995.

Dark Shadows Episode 1105 9/18/70

At Collinwood, Julia and Barnabas go to check on Maggie. They find Mrs. Johnson unconscious, and Maggie gone.

Maggie approaches a shrouded figure in the woods.

Barnabas calls out the window to Maggie. Julia says Mrs. Johnson has been knocked out. Barnabas notices the secret panel is open. He goes in search of Maggie.

Julia comes downstairs and in the foyer, hears music playing. She goes into the drawing room and finds Carolyn. Julia asks who she was talking to. Carolyn denies anyone was there. Julia asks if Gerard was there. Carolyn asks her why she didn't say the children were missing. Julia asks her how she knew. Carolyn is flustered, and Julia asks her what Gerard told her. Carolyn demands that she tell her where the children are, and if she does, she'll tell them where they can find Maggie. She says she had a vision of her. Julia says Maggie's life is in danger, and Carolyn in unimpressed. Julia tells her that she doesn't believe she has second sight. She says that if she did, she'd be able to see the children. She accuses her of not seeing Maggie, either. Carolyn says she can't tell her.

Barnabas calls for Willie, who comes running downstairs. He tells Willie to lock Daphne's door, and then to help him search for Maggie. He asks him to check with Julia first to see if she's learned anything from Mrs. Johnson.

Carolyn is singing the Pansy Faye song when Willie walks in and startles her. Carolyn laughs, saying she knows more about Maggie than Julia and Barnabas. 

He asks her what she knows, and grabs her roughly. She asks why she should help him, since Maggie never belonged in Collinwood. Willie tells her that she's crazy, and she calls him stupid. She says he's not smart enough to find Maggie. She offers him a riddle to help him find her, sure he won't be able to figure it out.

In the woods, Willie tries to figure out Carolyn's riddle. He finds himself in Eagle Hill Cemetery. He doesn't think he can figure out the riddle. He sits down and leans up against a tombstone that has the name Harrow, which aligns with the riddle. 

That leads him to a crypt. He goes inside and finds a coffin inside. He opens the lid and it's empty. He realizes this is where the vampire stays. 

He finds Maggie on the ground behind the coffin, bleeding from a wound on her neck.

Julia gives Maggie a blood transfusion as Barnabas and Willie stand over her. Barnabas says that he'd like to drive a stake into his heart himself. Julia says that's impossible. Barnabas says that they'll have to do it. Julia says they'll know who's responsible soon enough.

Julia watches over Maggie, waiting for dawn.

In the old house, Willie shows Barnabas the stake and mallet. Julia arrives, and Barnabas expresses his regret that he can't do it himself. Julia and Willie leave, and Barnabas heads downstairs.

After sunrise, Julia and Willie arrive at the crypt. The expect to find someone guarding the coffin, but no one is there when they arrive. Willie considers if it were Barnabas' coffin, and they were two other people. Julia tells him not to think that, and opens the coffin. She looks inside and is shocked by what she sees. 

Our thoughts: 

John: So just to confirm, do we check-off the destruction of Rose Cottage, for real this time?

Christine: I'm not sure. Did we get confirmation that Rose Cottage was actually destroyed? Perhaps the Collinsport Fire Dept. arrived in time to save it.  I guess I'll check it off, and hopefully we won't have to uncheck it again when the clue gets changed to the destruction of Rose Cottage by falling meteor or something. 

John: Willie and Carolyn really turned things up to eleven today! Even parallel time Willie and Carolyn didn't scream at the same decibel levels! 

Christine: That was glorious entertainment! I wonder if Carolyn ever finished her big cookie. She nibbled on that for two whole scenes without making much headway. It seemed a rather odd prop, though maybe there is some connection to 1995 Carolyn, who compulsively ate Prof. Stokes' grapes.

John: Good thing Sebastian had the day off today, or it would have ruined the surprise if they found him guarding Roxanne's coffin. I mean, it has to be Roxanne, right? Willie may not know of Roxanne's relationship with Barnabas, but would Julia hesitate because she does? I guess we have to wait until next week to find out...

Christine: I will be very surprised if it is not Roxanne and even more surprised if she gets staked. Julia's devotion to Barnabas will prevent her from killing the woman of his dreams without informing him first. Also, it's not much fun if Barnabas doesn't get to agonize over choosing between Maggie and vampire Roxanne.

Dark Shadows Episode 1101 9/14/70

In the playroom, Gerard stands before Rose Cottage with a lit candle. He sets the dollhouse on fire.
In Rose Cottage, Daphne sees flames. She tries to get out, but the door is stuck.

In the playroom, Gerard holds the dollhouse door shut with his finger.

Daphne is trapped in the burning room in Rose Cottage.

Gerard smiles.

Maggie sleeps with a crucifix around her neck. Carolyn is in the room with her, and suddenly feels as if someone is going to die in the house. She runs out of the room.

Daphne notices the windows are boarded up, and begs for Gerard not to kill her.

Gerard watches the dollhouse burn.

Daphne begs for her life.

Carolyn walks in on Gerard and asks him what he's trying to do.

In Rose Cottage, the fire goes out. Daphne tries the door and it opens.

Carolyn accuses Gerard of trying to destroy the dollhouse. Carolyn says she won't allow anything to happen to it, because she gave it to Carrie for her birthday. She asks who he was trying to hurt. He walks away and she tries to set things back up in the dollhouse. She asks Gerard if he's the least bit ashamed. He approaches her and she tells him not to do anything to Carrie's dollhouse before leaving the room. He scowls.

Barnabas listens to the dogs howling outside of Collinwood. Julia returns and says the children were cooperative. He suggests that they go see Maggie now.

A squeaky bat flaps outside Maggie's window. She removes the crucifix and gets out of bed. Barnabas and Julia arrive. Barnabas looks out the window, but there's no one there. He asks Maggie who she wanted to see. She says she has to go, and he asks her where. Julia says her condition is worse. Julia says she shouldn't have been left alone. She goes to get her supplies so she can give Maggie another transfusion.

Julia brings a jug of blood when she finds Carolyn in the foyer. She asks Carolyn why she left Maggie. Carolyn says she had something urgent to do, and the danger isn't as great as she thinks it is. Carolyn goes to leave, and Julia says it's dangerous outside. Carolyn says she'll be fine. She says she can't talk about it, but she has something urgent to do at Rose Cottage. Julia says she previously told her she had never heard of it. Julia asks her where it's at, and who lives there. Carolyn says no one has lived there since she died. Julia asks her who died. Carolyn asks why she's so curious about Rose Cottage. She says it might be best to drop it. Julia asks her to mail a letter on her way.

Barnabas asks Maggie to look at him. He asks her who she was trying to see when he and Julia came into her room. She says nothing. Julia comes in and pulls Barnabas aside. She writes a note, saying Carolyn is going to Rose Cottage. She explains she asked Carolyn to mail a letter for her. She gives the letter to Barnabas to give to Carolyn, and asks him to follow her. She then sets up Maggie's transfusion.

Barnabas gives Carolyn Julia's letter. She leaves, and he follows after her.

Maggie responds to the dogs howling. She says she doesn't want to stay. Julia tells her it's for her own good.

Carolyn arrives at Rose Cottage. She calls for Daphne. Barnabas walks on her. He asks who she was talking to. He demands that she tell him everything she knows about Rose Cottage. She says that's a strange name for a place like this. He asks how it got named. She says it was named when Carrie was small. She says Carrie always dreamed of a dollhouse called Rose Cottage. Carolyn says she had Quentin build a replica of this house for Carrie. She says everyone called the dollhouse Rose Cottage, and eventually called the mansion the same. She then tells Barnabas he was rude to follow her, and storms off.

Julia is taking Maggie's pulse when Barnabas comes in. He says he's been to Rose Cottage — it was the old Magruder house. Julia says if Maggie is attacked one more time, it will be too late. Barnabas says he must destroy the man who is doing this to Maggie, and heads outside.

Julia reads while Maggie sleeps. A figure wearing a hat appears in the room behind her. Julia suddenly grows tired. She nods off. Maggie removes the crucifix and gets out of bed, approaching the figure in the shadows.

Our thoughts: 

John: So is Carolyn always possessed by Leticia now, or does she drop in and out of character? Obviously she was pure Leticia in her interaction with Gerard ... though I'm not going to lie, after setting him up as the boogeyman, it's a bit disappointing to have him so easily put in his place by a woman from 1840. I guess we'll find out soon enough why he's at her mercy.

Christine: Back in Episode 1094, Caro-Leticia asked Gerard if he remembered how much Leticia used to 'please' him, and promised to do more of the same. Perhaps that has something to do with him treating her a little nicer than everyone else.

John: Sure, Barnabas, pile on the references to the man clearly responsible for Maggie's condition. The more you say it, the more I'm convinced that our next vampire in Collinwood will be our old pal Roxanne.

Christine: It could be that he assumed only a male vampire would put the bite on a woman, as established by past precedent, so he is certainly in for a shock when he finds out his parallel squeeze is the vampire! The question is, will it be a pleasant or unpleasant surprise for him? Perhaps a little ménage-à-vampire with Roxanne and Maggie is something he never imagined possible in his wildest dreams.

John: A little bit of phantom of the opera in that silhouette in Maggie's room. A small enough figure to be Roxanne, but she obviously had the day off, so I'm assuming whoever we saw today was just a stand-in, and we can expect to get the real deal tomorrow. Finally!

Christine: The cloaked figure is played by Liliane Sandor, which happens to be the only role she is credited for in IMDb. I wonder if Julia keeps bottles of blood on hand to feed Barnabas, which would explain why we don't see him out dining on the docks anymore, and also how she was able to have just the right blood type to transfuse Maggie at the ready. It would be kind of fun to see him chug a bottle.
