Dark Shadows Episode 529 - 7/5/68

Maggie comes into the room Vicki is sleeping in, and screams. Vicki wakes up and Maggie describes seeing the ghost of a woman at the foot of the bed. She describes the woman, who Vicki recognizes as Angelique.

Vicki realizes that she's not safer at Maggie's. She says she will have the dream, and Barnabas will die. Maggie says she's sure she didn't have time to tell Vicki the dream. There's a knock at the door, and it's Joe. Maggie tells him she saw a ghost in Vicki's room. Joe dismisses that, and Maggie explains that Stokes and Vicki think Angelique Collins is responsible for a dream curse that will kill Barnabas. Maggie asks Joe to spend the night. He agrees, and Vicki goes back to her bedroom.

Vicki spots the rosewater Angelique left behind, and starts to apply some to her neck. Maggie comes in to check on her, and she says she feels fine. She asks Maggie if she could use some of her cologne, and Maggie tells her it's not hers. She assumed it was Vicki's. Vicki realizes that Angelique left it for her to use so she would have the dream. She gives the bottle to Maggie and asks her to smash it.

Joe finds the idea of a dream curse incredible. Maggie suggests Vicki could leave Collinsport for a while. She says she couldn't leave Jeff, and that she'll visit Stokes in the morning. Joe says there's something odd about Stokes. He entered Vicki's life by way of the portrait of Angelique. And then he broke into the Evans' cottage. Joe says he'd like to join her on her visit.

Stokes works on vocabulary with Adam, and then suggests they play a new game. A word association game. Stokes says love, and Adam says love. He says hate, and Adam says Willie. Stokes asks why, and he says Willie hurt him. Stokes says kill, and Adam says Barnabas. He says Barnabas hurt Adam. Stokes asks why, since Willie also hurt him. Adam says Barnabas was his friend, and then hurt him, and he begins to cry. He asks how they met when the doorbell rings. Stokes sends Adam to his room.

He lets Joe and Vicki in, and Stokes says he thought she left Collinsport. He says she will remain in danger as long as she's in the vicinity of Collinwood. Stokes tells Vicki her analysis of the situation is correct. The cologne would have induced the dream. He reiterates that she must leave Collinsport, and she says she cannot, because Jeff needs him. He says she's behaving like a moonstruck schoolgirl. Joe asks Stokes about the flash cards by the fireplace. He says he's teaching a three year-old nephew to read. Joe hears someone and says he thought Stokes lived alone. Stokes says he has cleaning people in.

As they go to leave, Joe gives him his stick pin. He says they found it on the living room floor. Stokes says he must have left it on one of his visits. Joe says they found it after Sam died, right where he was unconscious. He asks what Stokes would have been doing at the house when Maggie was staying at Collinwood. He explains he stopped by to extend his condolences. The door wasn't locked, and when he didn't find her, he left at once. As they leave, Stokes tells Vicki he hopes she doesn't have the dream.

Joe sneaks into Maggie's place and grabs a rifle next to Sam's easel when Maggie asks him what he's doing. She asks what he's doing. He says he doesn't have time to explain, and leaves with the rifle.

The doorbell rings at Stokes place, and Joe comes in with a gun. He accuses Stokes of hiding someone dangerous in his house. He says someone is hiding the maniac responsible for Sam's death, and he thinks it's Stokes. He tells him he's going to search the house, and Stokes refuses. He threatens to call the police, and Joe dares him to. They start to struggle, and Adam comes out. Joe pulls the gun on him and goes to the phone to call the police. Adam runs outside and Joe follows. We hear a gunshot as Stokes yells for him not to shoot.

Our thoughts

John: How would Maggie know how long Angelique was in the room with Vicki? She was sure she wasn't there long enough to tell her anything, of course we know she was wrong.

Christine: It was strange that Maggie said that right after she had just told her that the woman seemed to be whispering something to her. What was she doing going into her room at midnight anyway?

John: So where exactly is Jeff staying these days? Is he in the other room at the Evans' cottage? And why can't he leave with Vicki? What's keeping him in Collinsport? It seems like the two of them could run away and no one would stop them.

Christine: Yes, where is good-for-nothing Jeff Clark? Jeff can't run away with Vicki because he's got no bread. He lost his job as a parts specialist when Lang died, and it's a mystery how he's been supporting himself without a job.

John: It was clear that it was only a matter of time before Stokes was caught in a lie. We'll see where things go from here, but things don't look good for Adam if he's been shot again!

Christine: If Adam's been mortally wounded, then Barnabas is also in trouble. It was odd that Stokes told Vicki that the pipe tobacco Cassandra left for Sam Evans induced his dream, when he was the one who intercepted it and passed it on to Tony Peterson to prevent that from happening in Episode 513. Cassandra induced Sam's dream by drugging his water in Episode 517, though Stokes wouldn't have known that. As much as the camera crew loves to include mirror images in shots, I thought it was unusual that the mirrors in both Stokes' and Maggie's places had been covered with what appears to be vaseline. What's up with that?

Dark Shadows Episode 528 - 7/4/68

Jeff asks why Vicki has to leave, and she tells him that she'll have the dream, and if she has it, Barnabas will die. He says he doesn't understand. He says Stokes couldn't figure anything out about him through hypnosis. Jeff says she could tell Cassandra she's going away, and then stay at the Evans' cottage with Maggie. Cassandra enters looking for David. Vicki tells her she needs to leave for a week. Cassandra says that's not possible. They need her to be with David. She says she's busy with her brother in town. Vicki says she must leave tonight, and Cassandra threatens, "even if you don't have a position to come back to?"

In the garden, Blair complains about his sister's lack of progress. He calls her to come to the gazebo to see him.

Vicki asks Cassandra if something is wrong, and she rushes out, telling her to speak to Roger.

Cassandra tells Blair he interrupted her while Vicki was threatening to leave. He tells her she's wasting time with Barnabas, and she snaps at him. He reminds her that she is there because he allowed her to come. He asks her why Barnabas is not as he was before, and she blames Sam Evans for dying. She says it will work if Vicki stays in Collinwood tonight and has the dream. He says she can't even control a young woman. He says she could have dealt with Barnabas as soon as she returned. She asks for his help with Vicki. She asks him to drug Vicki, and he explains he's too talented to be drugging drinks. He agrees, but points out that he will never forget her incompetence.

Vicki comes downstairs with her bags, and Blair stops her to have a drink with him. She reluctantly agrees. He fixes her drink, and before she can try it, Jeff arrives. Blair invites him to join them, but he says they don't have time. They leave, with Blair left holding the drinks. Cassandra comes in, and he offers her Vicki's drink. He says drugging drinks is not his style. Blair says he's concerned she's losing her powers. He suggests she figure out where Vicki has gone, and she tells him to leave her alone to do that.

Cassandra looks into the flames to find Vicki's destination. She sees the Evans cottage in the flames.

Vicki thanks Maggie for letting her stay with her. She also thanks her for not asking questions why she wanted to get away from Collinwood. Maggie points out that she wanted to stay close to Jeff. Vicki asks why she and Joe don't get married. She says they will get married, very soon. Vicki offers to throw her a shower, and Maggie says maybe soon she can return the favor.

At midnight, Angelique appears in the room with Vicki. She leaves rosewater perfume for her, and says when she uses it, she will fall asleep and have the dream.

Maggie comes into her room, sees Angelique, and screams.

Our thoughts

John: I don't quite get how Vicki sleeping in Collinsport, but not Collinwood, would prevent her from having the dream. Sam and Maggie both had the dream in the cottage. I think that was a weak story point.

Christine: Agreed. It may have been an excuse to have bipolar Jeff Clark be in surly mode again today and demand that she not leave town. Unlike Vicki, who denies that Barnabas loves her, he still remembers that Vicki was going to run off and marry Barnabas at one time.

John: Blair continues to treat Angelique with disdain. I wonder what exactly is the history between them, as they are certainly not equals...

Nicholas: If you cannot find out where she has gone, I should be terribly concerned if I were you. And I wouldn't be you for anything in this world.

Christine: His disdain seems to stem from her love for Barnabas, which is not an appropriate emotion for someone who summons the devil on a regular basis. It was nice to hear him confront her on why she didn't change Barnabas back immediately instead of dilly dallying around with the dream curse. I loved when he got exasperated and told her, "Oh really! I am much too talented to spend my time drugging drinks," but then agreed to drug Vicki's drink instead of using his talents at sorcery to help her. This guy gets more fun to watch every day.

John: Do you think Maggie has thwarted Angelique's plan? I would have expected her to disappear as soon as Maggie opened the door. Maybe she truly has lost her magic touch.

Christine: Hopefully she has a lighter handy so she can entrance Maggie and we can get on with the dream curse. I'm surprised that Vicki is not too creeped out to sleep in dead Sam Evans' bed. I wonder where Jeff Clark is sleeping. Did we really need to check in on the clock three times before Angelique finally showed up at the witching hour?

Dark Shadows Episode 527 - 7/3/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

In Vicki's room, Jeff tells Blair he doesn't believe Vicki was sleepwalking. Blair says that now that Vicki is home and his sister is back, everything is back to normal, including the painting, as he pulls it out and shows that it is no longer faded. Jeff says he doesn't understand how paint can fade and come back. Blair bids them goodnight.

Vicki says the painting has add an odd effect on so many of them. Jeff tells her she wasn't sleepwalking, and Blair knows it. He shows her the button she had in her hand, and says that it's from Blair's jacket, so he's involved somehow. He adds that if he truly is Cassandra's brother, he may be related to Angelique. He tells her he'll go to see Professor Stokes tomorrow. He kisses her, promising her a fresh start.

In the drawing room, Nicholas congratulates himself on his night's work. Jeff rushes in and tells him to stay away from Vicki. He says he knows he had something to do with her disappearance. He points out Blair's missing button. Jeff produces the missing button, telling him that he found it with Vicki. She was clutching it in her hand when he found her in the woods. Blair says he must have lost it when walking in the woods. Jeff offers up a veiled threat, and Blair smiles at him.

Adam reviews words in the dictionary. He and Stokes converse, and Stokes asks him the first thing that he remembers? Adam says Barnabas. He describes straps and a table like a bed. He says Dr. Hoffman, and then hurt. Stokes ask where he lived, and Adam mentions a house where Willie lived, and how he was chained to a wall. He describes breaking the chain and running to escape. Stokes asked what Barnabas did to him, and he says he hurt him. The doorbell rings and Stokes sends Adam to his room.

Stokes prepares to hypnotize Jeff. He asks Vicki to return to Collinwood. She leaves the two of them alone. Stokes hypnotizes Jeff with his eyeglass. Stokes asks his name, and he says it's Jeff Clark. Stokes asks before that, and he describes waking up and seeing Dr. Lang. Stokes asks what he was doing, and Jeff says Lang was going take his face. He told Jeff he was a murderer. Stokes mentions Barnabas and Hoffman were always in Lang's laboratory.

Stokes asks if he'd recognize the body of Lang's creation. He thinks he could, and Stokes calls out Adam. Jeff is shocked to see him. Stokes sends Adam away. He stops hypnotizing Jeff, who asks him to tell him who he is.

Stokes and Vicki are in the drawing room discussing Jeff. Stokes says he has come to see Julia. Vicki says she's not home. She says she asked Cassandra where she is. Stokes is shocked to hear Cassandra has returned. He asks when, and Nicholas Blair enters, telling him she returned yesterday. Stokes tells him they have met before, when Blair was selling an antique dealer the painting that Vicki bought. Blair denies it. He says he's never been to Collinsport before, and excuses himself to retire upstairs. Blair says he'll tell his sister Stokes was asking after her, and he encourages him to do so.

Stokes asks where the picture is. She says it's upstairs. He asks if the painting has been restored. She says yes. Stokes tells her she must leave Collinwood tonight, or she will have the dream, and Barnabas will be next.

Our thoughts

John: I was disappointed that Jeff blew his chance to pin down Blair with the missing button. Blair got off too easy.

Christine: I had to laugh at Nicholas delivering his third person soliloquy to his brandy glass, telling himself he's free to leave and let Cassandra make more mistakes, as he strangely wags his pointer finger back and forth. Since Blair acknowledged he had rescued her again, I wonder if the first time was after Sam had aged her portrait, or if he was also responsible for rescuing her after Barnabas strangled her in the mausoleum. Perhaps Nicholas is the reason Angelique can take a licking and still keep on ticking.

John: I'm curious what Stokes' endgame is with Adam. He's gotten him to be much more communicative, and he's getting information from him. But how much does Adam really know? Will Stokes soon realize that Barnabas is a vampire?

Christine: I can't imagine that Stokes is teaching Adam solely by reading him words out of the dictionary and drilling him with flash cards, which would seem to quickly bore his childlike mind. I prefer to imagine he's tucking him in and reading him bedtime stories from the Brothers Grimm to help develop his vocabulary. I like how Jeff Clark recognized Adam from the severed arm he had procured for Lang's creation.

Yep, that's definitely Adam.

John: Interesting twist to hear that Blair sold the painting of Angelique to the antique shop! I do love how he suggests there must be someone else who looks just like him, as if he doesn't have a unique look.

Christine: That was pretty funny. He must have been selling the portrait at Angelique's behest to help her gain access to Collinwood, but why would he do so? I want to know more about the coven of two and the strange bargain they've struck. I wonder what makes Stokes think that Vicki can avoid the dream curse by leaving Collinwood. Let's hope he's wrong and that we'll be adding to the Round Robin Nightmare tracker before the end of the week.

Dark Shadows Episode 526 - 7/2/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Blair calls for the spirit of Angelique. He then calls upon the powers of darkness to return her to life. A woman's screams can be heard, and she appears, tied to the tree.

She asks him to untie her, and he asks how she let it happen. She explains the spirit of Trask was responsible, and Blair says it's her fault that her power wasn't stronger than Trask's. He points out her love of Barnabas weakened her. She tries to convince him that she hates Barnabas, and he explains that he won't save her again. Blair points out that he used Vicki to find the tree where Angelique was exorcised.

Jeff arrives at Collinwood, and finds the door standing open. He knocks, and Roger comes downstairs in his pajamas. He asks what Clark is doing in the middle of the night, and Jeff says he has to see Vicki now. Roger lets him in, and goes upstairs to get Vicki.

Blair tells Angelique what she needs to do with Roger, and Angelique reiterates that the dream curse must resume. He points out that the bargain between them means more than anything else to him.

Jeff waits for Vicki in the foyer. Roger comes downstairs and says Vicki is not there. Jeff says the front door was open when he arrived, and suggests she may have gone out and left it open. He goes to look for her, and Roger grabs his coat to join him. As he turns to the door, Cassandra is there. He asks if she's alright, and she says she's glad to be back. She says she left on impulse. Roger says that in time the family will accept her. She asks him to forgive her, and he quickly does. He then remembers that Vicki is missing.

Vicki wanders through the forest. Jeff calls out to her, and then finds her, in a trance. She asks Jeff how she got there. He tells her he'll take her back to Collinwood, and sees she's clutching something in her hand - it's a button.

Nicholas come downstairs and sees Cassandra. They offer up a dramatic reunion for Roger's benefit. Blair tells Roger he needs to be strict with her. She invites her brother to stay, and Roger extends an open invitation to him.

They hear the front door as Jeff and Vicki enter. She stares wide-eyed at Cassandra, surprised she's back. Cassandra offers to take her upstairs, and when Vicki recoils, Jeff offers to do it.

Cassandra asks Roger to get champagne, leaving her alone with Blair in the drawing room. He points out that Vicki is suspicious of her, and asks if she'd like to do something about that.

In Vicki's room, Jeff offers to stay outside her door to prevent her from sleepwalking. She says she's not afraid of sleepwalking—she's afraid of Cassandra. Jeff asks why, and Vicki says that aside from the color of her hair, she looks exactly like Angelique Collins. She points out she arrived suddenly, looking just like the portrait. Vicki says that she's frightened of both her and her brother. Jeff assures her he'll protect her.

Vicki asks why he was there so late in the night, and able to find her. He says that he knows who he is—Peter Bradford. He says a memory of his past came back in a dream. He describes the dream of being in his cell after she was convicted of witchcraft. He says they discussed Nathan Forbes, and he told her he would kill him for what he did to her. He describes finding and shooting Forbes, but he wouldn't die.

Vicki tells him that Peter never escaped from jail, and he didn't kill Forbes. Jeff says it was all so vivid, he knows he was there. She says he probably thinks that because he's heard her talk so much about her experience. She says he needs to see Professor Stokes to find out for sure. There's a knock at the door, and Nicholas comes in to check on Vicki. Jeff notices there's a button missing from Blair's jacket, and he pulls the button Vicki was clutching from his own pocket.

Our thoughts

John: Angelique must have been in hell, because she was still wearing that nightmarish lime green butterfly dress when Blair resurrected her. Of course she somehow changed into a lime green coat by the time she got back to Collinwood.

Christine: Her trendy butterfly caftan is loungewear, so she must have conjured up her lime green coat so she could craft a semi plausible story that didn't involve roaming the countryside in her psychedelic at-home wear to explain her absence to Roger.

John: It's funny how quickly Blair goes from deep-talking warlock to whimsical conversationalist once he brings Angelique back to life.

Christine: What is Blair's true relationship to Angelique, and what is this bargain she made with him that compelled him to answer her summons for help?

John: Jeff/Peter sure had a fun time acting to the lamp in Vicki's bedroom today.

Christine: Yes, it was creepy. Good news from today's episode, everybody! The dream curse will finally get back on track and hopefully work its way towards a resolution. I'm not sure how Vicki plucked a button from so low down on Nicholas' coat, though the only time she could have was when he momentarily lost control of her in the woods in yesterday's episode.

Dark Shadows Episode 525 - 7/1/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Jeff dreams, with a gun pointed at Nathan Forbes. Forbes tells him to go ahead and shoot him. Forbes laughs at him for trying to be a hero. He tells Jeff that it's too late. Jeff pulls the trigger, but nothing happens to Forbes, who continues laughing. He explains he's already dead, and Jeff yells out in his sleep.

Joe hears Jeff screaming, and goes in to wake him. Jeff sees him, calls him Forbes, and tries to strangle him. Joe fends him off and asks him if he's crazy. Jeff says he thought he was Nathan Forbes, who he was trying to kill in a dream. He apologizes, and Joe says he's glad Maggie didn't try to wake him up. Joe asks why he doesn't like him. Jeff realizes it's because he reminds him of Forbes, and that means he really knew him. Jeff apologizes to Joe again, and tells him to go back to bed. Jeff realizes he knew people Vicki met in the past, and that he's not Jeff Clark, he's Peter Bradford.

Blair brings the portrait of Angelique into the drawing room. He commands her to guide her to the tree where she was burned so he can find her ashes and restore her to life. He hears a woman screaming, and says she has heard him, and will obey, as Vicki walks in.

She asks where he found her painting. He says Roger let him borrow it to hang in his room. Vicki explains it belongs to her. She asks why it's faded, and he says it must have been the sunlight, or perhaps it was cleaned with the wrong chemicals. He asks Vicki if he can do her a favor. He says he'd pay to have it restored, as he's very fond of it. She says she likes it the way it is. She reminds him it is her painting, and asks to have it. He gives it to her, and she starts upstairs. He asks if he could borrow it just for one night, for sentimental reasons. He says it reminds her of his sister, and it would make him feel more comfortable while she's missing. She says she doesn't want to, and takes it upstairs. Blair is angry for being thwarted.

Vicki goes to bed with the painting in her room.

Blair is pacing in the drawing room when Roger returns home. He says they've had no luck finding Cassandra. It's as if she vanished into thin air. Blair suggests they have a drink, and says that she will return to him as quietly as she went away. He tells Roger he had an interesting interaction with Vicki. He says she's attractive, but he got an impression that she didn't like him. He says Cassandra had the same feeling. Roger explains that Vicki believes she lived in the past, in 1795, after they held a seance in Collinwood. Blair asks what happened to her. Roger explains she thought she was condemned and hanged as a witch by a Reverend Trask. Blair finds the story curious. He asks what Trask did to her. Roger says he persecuted her endlessly, and then sent her to the gallows. Blair asks if he tried to exorcise her, and Roger says he tied her to a tree somewhere on the estate. Roger retires for the evening, and Blair realizes Trask exorcised Angelique in the same spot that he did Vicki. And Vicki can lead him to the tree.

Downstairs, Blair commands Vicki to hear and obey him. He says she will rise from her bed and leave Collinwood, and make her way to the tree where Trask exorcised her. In her room. Vicki gets up and begins to sleepwalk. She makes her way downstairs and goes out the front door. Blair follows behind her. Vicki leads him to a tree with ropes tied around it. Blair realizes the ashes of Angelique must be near. He tells her to return to Collinwood, where she will wake having forgotten everything of the evening. After she's gone, he calls for the spirit of Angelique. He then calls upon the powers of darkness to return her to life. A woman's screams can be heard.

Our thoughts

John: Jeff has a moment of clarity, and just like that, he's Peter Bradford. I wonder how long this can last?

Christine: It's odd it should be giving him a moment of bliss today when it was giving him a wedgie last week to hear Vicki suggest it.

John: I have to say, Blair's facial hair is something to marvel at. That mustache, those eyebrows, that hair. He is a fantastic, creepy character. You'd think his looks alone would be enough to put everyone in Collinwood on edge.

Christine: He is a fabulous addition to the cast! Give him a pointed goatee, pitchfork and horns, and slip him behind somebody's dream curse door! Blair confirmed that Angelique was exorcised by Trask, which I didn't believe he had the power to do, as I've always assumed Trask was a charlatan. In that case, why wasn't he able to exorcise Angelique back in Episode 400?

John: It was nice to see Vicki stand up to Blair, not letting him take her portrait of Angelique. Too bad he was able to manipulate her so easily to lead him to Angelique's ashes...

Christine: It's kind of strange that Trask has one special witch exorcising tree that he always uses, or that Vicki would remember which one it was. If Blair could make Vicki "listen and obey" so easily, then why didn't he just make her give him the portrait instead of getting all pissy when she refused to loan it to him?
