Julia arrives at the hospital in the morning and finds Joe waiting in the hall. She asks if his cousin Tom regained consciousness. He says yes. She asks what he told him, and Joe says he did. She pries, asking if an animal attacked him. If not, the police should be involved. He explains that they should be, but they won't be, because he's dead. She asks what happened, and Joe snaps that he died. She recognizes that Joe is not well. He says if she was as guilty as he is, she'd know medication wouldn't help him.

She offers to call Maggie, and he tells her not to. He explains that she went with Tom before she went with him. Julia says Maggie will be upset if she doesn't hear the news from him. Julia offers to drive Joe home, and he says he has things to do at the hospital. She tells him he's under a great strain, and should rest. Joe says there's a funeral today. Tom wanted it that way. He told him right before he died. He says he'll be buried today and that's the end of it. He yells at her not to interfere with it. She tells him she doesn't understand what has happened to him, and leaves.

Willie is fixing a blanket over a cadaver in the basement when Barnabas walks in. He startles Willie, who says no one should ever have to do what he did. He says he'll never do it again, and Barnabas reminds him that he'll do as he's told. Willie says there won't be a next time. Barnabas asks him if he thinks that he and Julia want to make a mate for Adam. Willie says he should have killed Adam when he told him to in the beginning. Willie is concerned that someone will discover the basement laboratory. Willie asks Barnabas who will be the life force for Adam's mate, the way he was for Adam. Barnabas says he doesn't know. They hear a door upstairs, and Barnabas tells him to check who it is. Willie says if it's Adam, or if he ever finds Adam, he'll kill him.

Barnabas takes a peek at the cadaver when Julia comes downstairs. He tells her they can't trust Willie, and says she can start her work now. Julia tells him Tom Jennings died last night. He asks about the cause of death, and she says it was loss of blood due to animal bites—two marks on his neck. She says she didn't see his body, but there will be no formal investigation. She tells him they should go to the police. He asks what they would tell the police; all that they know about vampires? He says Tom will rise tonight. She says Joe's having Tom buried today, and Barnabas realizes that means Joe must know about his being a vampire.

He calls for Willie, who comes downstairs. He says there's something they must do tonight, and Willie shakes his head. Barnabas says they will do it together. He directs Willie to make a wooden stake.

Joe stands over Tom's grave, wondering if he should go to the police. He then decides he won't go to Angelique tonight, based on what she's done.

Barnabas, Willie and Julia approach the grave. They see Joe standing over it, and Julia says she'll get rid of him.

Julia approaches Joe and says she's been looking for him. He asks if something else has happened. She says she's worried about him, and he says he can take care of himself. She offers to take him to Collinwood to join her for dinner. She tells him it's dangerous for him to be out.

Barnabas and Willie watch them. Willie freaks out, and Barnabas explains they're not robbing a grave; they're dealing with an enemy he knows too well. They go to the grave after Julia and Joe leave, and Barnabas tells Willie to start digging.

Joe tells Julia he won't come with her to Collinwood. She tells him he can't go back to the grave, and he says he's going somewhere he has to go. She asks if that's the cemetery, and he tells her to leave him alone.

Willie and Barnabas stand by the unearthed coffin. Willie opens it, and they're shocked to see that it's empty.

Our thoughts

John: Um, Joe, if Tom turns up dead mysteriously, don't you think the police will definitely be interested?

Christine: Joe is not well, give him a break! He just fed his cousin to his new vampire girlfriend and is trying to resist her call for dessert. It seemed a random piece of information to learn that Maggie used to go out with Tom, so I wonder if that may pave the way for Tom to seek her out for a dinner date, should she escape Blair's dinner seduction.

John: You know Willie must be serious when he starts referring to himself in the third person.

Christine: Joe was lucky to find an all-night tombstone engraver to have Jennings' grave marker all ready to be installed overnight. They must work quickly to bury the dead in Collinsport.

John: How the hell did they get the coffin out of the grave? I guess the fact that it was empty helped, but let's be serious. Digging up a grave is one thing. But dead lifting a coffin from a hole in the ground? And now they have to bury it again, unless they plan to just leave it there!

Christine: Willie has had quite a bit of experience deadlifting coffins and digging graves around the property, so I expect he's in shape for it. I'm still trying to figure out how Jennings escaped the coffin without anyone noticing. Maybe he had some help. The trio spying on Joe in the cemetery had me thinking of Fred, Shaggy and Velma on Scooby Doo.
