Blair tells Angelique that he heard Tom Jennings is coming out of his coma. She asks if she has time to go to him, and Blair says he will visit him tomorrow morning. She asks what will happen if he speaks to anyone. He says he will take care of it, or leave it to her. He adds that tomorrow will bring about Tom Jennings' least expected climax.

Blair visits the hospital and tries to go into Tom's room. A nurse stops him. He explains that he's her lawyer. Maggie Evans interrupts them, and is surprised to see Blair there. She's bringing Tom flowers. The nurse lets her in, but keeps Blair out. The nurse explains that Maggie has permission from the doctor.

Maggie speaks to Tom, and tells him she's glad he's feeling better. Tom's first words are coffin, house and room. The nurse comes in and tells her it's time to go. Tom stops her and tells her to get Joe. She tells him to rest and says she'll bring Joe.

Blair is waiting when Maggie comes out. He asks if Tom is out of his coma. Blair says he feels responsible since he had his accident after being in his house. Maggie says he must think he's dying, because he kept talking about seeing a coffin in a house. She says he'll tell Joe everything tonight, as the two are cousins. Blair says he's positive Joe will take care of things. Maggie isn't sure what to make of Blair's excitement.

Joe is at The Blue Whale drinking when Maggie shows up. He says she's late, and she yells at him about last night. She says she's so mad that she wasn't going to come, but she wants to tell him about Tom.

He apologizes for last night, saying he fell asleep. She says she was worried sick. She asks him what's wrong, and he points out that it's getting dark. He asks about Tom, and she says he promised Tom that Joe would visit him. Joe goes to the window and she asks him what he's looking for. Joe says that it's getting dark, and lights a candle. When she asks what's wrong, he snaps at her.

Angelique sits up from her coffin and calls to Joe.

Maggie asks Joe if he's listening to her. He says he is, but can't tell her what she just said. He snaps at her again.

Angelique calls for Joe to come to her. She says she needs him as much as he needs her.

Joe says he's got to go, and can't explain. He says he's going to the hospital, and she says they won't let him see Tom now. Joe runs out, leaving her alone. Blair walks in and offers to join her. He suggests that she's having a lover's quarrel, having just seen Joe run out. He says he will sit with her and charm all of her problems away. He says they should break all the rules. He tells her he's trying to take advantage of her. Blair fondles the orange slice in his drink, and asks if she feels guilty drinking with him. She says she's not, and he says she will be after they have dinner together.

Joe arrives at Blair's, where Angelique is waiting for him. He says he should be at the hospital. She tells him he'll see Tom tonight. Both of them will see Tom. He realizes that she was the one who attacked Tom. She acknowledges that she did, and pulls him in for yet another bite.

Joe asks Tom if he's feeling better. Tom says Maggie was going to come back with him. He says Joe needs to tell the police that Tom isn't lying. He says he saw a coffin at Blair's. Joe says he knows him well, and there's no coffin there. Tom says there's a coffin downstairs. He tells Joe that he left the house, and he ran into a beautiful girl in the woods. Joe asks him to describe her, and he describes the wide-eyed blonde, Angelique. He says she did this to him, and Joe says he believes him. Tom asks him to go to the police. Joe says he will. He then opens the window to Tom's room. He says it's hot, and tells Tom to get some sleep. Joe leaves him alone.

At 2 a.m., dogs begin howling. A squeaky bat enters the room, and is replaced by Angelique. She leans in to take another bite out of Tom's neck.

Our thoughts

John: Back at The Blue Whale! How long has it been? We got the full repertoire of greatest hits! I was upset that Maggie wasn't the least bit concerned about Joe when she visited Tom, but they covered for some of that when they met at the Blue Whale, implying that they had spoken and arranged to meet.

Christine: I believe the last time we saw the Blue Whale was when Carolyn was trying to cozy up to Peterson so she could steal Julia's diary of treatments on Barnabas in Episode 358

John: Damn Nicholas Blair is a creep! Charm Maggie's problems away? Ewwww. That scene was rife with strange, creepy close-ups of Blair's face, odd camera zooming in and out... It was as if the cameraman didn't realize they were live and not just rehearsing.

Christine: That may have been the most disturbing thing I've ever seen on Dark Shadows! His fingering the orange slice with a salacious grin was downright scandalous. I'm worried about what may happen to Maggie after he plies her with more alcohol over dinner, especially after claiming she'll feel guilty after dining with him. Run away, Maggie!

John: In his very limited screen time, Don Briscoe as Tom has impressed me as one of Dark Shadows most over-the-top actors. Particularly when playing a character just out of a coma. Here I thought he was going to be a one-episode wonder... now that they introduced him as Joe's cousin I'm hoping he'll stick around for a while. I think the fact that Angelique didn't actually bite him in this episode might be an indication that she'll be interrupted before she does.

Christine: Here I thought Dark Shadows was finally getting with the times by having a more diverse cast, and then I found out that it would be Nurse Beverly Atkinson's only appearance on the show. It was her first TV role, though she would go on to make appearances on many popular TV shows throughout the 70s and 80s.
