Adam blames Barnabas for making him different from other people, and not telling him. Barnabas tells him Dr. Lang was responsible for creating him. Adam says people fear him because he is ugly. He says he's tired of being alone. Adam tells Barnabas that he will create a woman for him. Barnabas says it's not within his power to create life. Adam refuses to believe him.

He tells Adam Lang died two days before the experiment. Adam reiterates that Barnabas was there when he opened his eyes. He says if Lang was dead, someone else did his work for him. Adam asks who, if not Barnabas, did complete Lang's work. Barnabas says it was Julia. Adam says she must help him. He says if they create a woman for him, he will take her and go away.

Willie comes in and is startled by Adam. Barnabas sends Willie back downstairs, but Adam makes him stay. Barnabas explains that Adam wants he and Julia to create a woman for him.

Adam says it will be done, and soon. Barnabas asks Adam who put this idea in his head. He says no one did. Barnabas presses on, asking how many people know his origin, and Adam says none. Adam gives Barnabas 20 minutes to change his mind.

Jeff comes to Collinwood to pick up Vicki. She tells him she made plans to go to the old house to see Barnabas. She says she wants to tell him about their engagement. Jeff is jealous, but denies it. She says she can't change that Barnabas loves her, but he can't change that she loves Jeff. He asks how long she needs, and she says an hour. She tells him to wait for her, and leaves.

Adam tells Barnabas his time is up, and says he's leaving. Barnabas asks where he's staying. He asks if he's staying with Stokes, and offers to let him stay at the old house. He asks Adam to stay long enough for him to get Julia to explain why they are unable to help Adam. Adam says she'll lie, too. Barnabas says it's too bad someone has made him so cynical. Adam tells Barnabas he will be sorry, and leaves.

Willie grabs a rifle and starts after Adam, but is stopped by Barnabas. He explains that Adam heard a recording from Lang. Willie asks if that was David's tape. He said David stopped by and was asking about Barnabas. Barnabas says the message is important to him.

Adam wanders through the woods, and hides in the shadows when he sees Vicki approaching. After she walks by, Adam turns to follow her.

Vicki arrives at the old house, and is greeted by Barnabas. He invites her in, and Adam sneaks over to the window to watch them.

Barnabas says that now Cassandra is gone, he will be spending more time at Collinwood. She explains that she may not, as she's going to be married. She wanted him to know, as his feelings are important to her. He thanks her, and expresses his reservation that she hasn't known Jeff Clark long. He offers her his best wishes, and kisses her on the cheek. Adam sees this from the window. Barnabas says that his feelings for Vicki won't change, and wishes her happiness. She leaves to return to the old house, and Barnabas pauses at the door, looking up at the moon.

On her way back through the woods, Vicki encounters Adam. She asks how he got there, and he tells her that she will help him. She screams and passes out, and he picks her up and carries her back towards the old house.

Our thoughts

John: Funny how in just a matter of weeks, Adam has learned to speak better than Willie!

Christine: Adam's advanced intelligence may be part of what inspires Willie's sibling rivalry, claiming that he and Barnabas don't need Adam around. He's certainly turned out to be a loyal servant to Barnabas, even without vampire persuasion.

John: When did Jeff get a job? Who do you think he's digging up bodies for now? And is it safe to assume that he'll get hired by Barnabas and Julia to do the same work for them?

Christine: It is surprising to learn he's gainfully employed. Apparently, he's working the night shift, since he claims to be playing hooky when he arrives just before 9pm. It would be convenient for Barnabas and Julia if it turns out he's working at the morgue. I like how Vicki asks him to wait for her at Collinwood for a whole hour while she goes over to the Old House to tell Barnabas that she's engaged to yet another man, but I guess there's a brandy bottle in the drawing room to keep him entertained.

John: Wouldn't it have been interesting if Adam brought Barnabas Vicki's dead body. What better incentive would Barnabas have for trying to bring the dead back to life. If he could do that, he should be able to create life for Adam, too. Of course, I think Adam is going to be disappointed if his grave-order bride isn't the spitting image of Carolyn...

Christine: I guess she should have let Jeff Clark walk her to the Old House instead of insisting on going alone and asking him to wait around for her.
