Adam looks in the mirror at his scarred face. He breaks the mirror. He picks up the knife next to his food. He says that Barnabas knew. He says Carolyn hates him because he's not like other people and stabs himself with the knife. Harry Johnson comes in with food for Adam, and says he wasn't able to get him new silverware so he'll have to use his breakfast utensils. Harry says he can wipe them off, and then notices the knife is missing. He asks Adam what he's doing with the knife, and tells him to give it to him. Adam says he's going to kill himself because Carolyn hates him. Harry says it's not true. If it were, she wouldn't let him stay, or feed him, or send him books to read. Harry asks him again for the knife and Adam hands it over. Harry leaves with the knife.

Harry comes into drawing room looking for Carolyn. Blair is there, and asks if he's going to attack her, since he's got the knife. Blair says Carolyn just left with Stokes, and asks him what happened. He tells Harry he knows about Adam, and demands that Harry tell him what happened. Harry explains that Adam tried to kill himself. Blair tells Harry to stay downstairs until Carolyn returns, and then tell her everything that happened.

Blair checks on Adam, and asks why he wanted to die. Adam says he has no friends. He says Stokes told him he's different than other people and Carolyn won't love him. Blair explains that he became friends with Adam despite knowing he was different. Blair explains that for an extraordinary man, he has an ordinary problem. Blair offers to tell him the solution to his problem.

Carolyn returns home and Harry tells her Adam belongs in a hospital. He explains that Adam tried to kill himself. She asks why he didn't come looking for her. Harry explains that Blair told him to wait for her. She reminds Harry who's boss, and runs upstairs.

Blair tells Adam that what they discussed must remain a secret. Carolyn enters and explains that Blair is not welcome upstairs. He explains there's no longer a problem, and Adam is happy now. Carolyn doesn't understand the change of heart. She asks Blair to wait downstairs, and asks Adam if he's all right. Adam tells her everything will be better soon.

Blair sits at the piano, playing, when Carolyn comes downstairs. She asks what he told Adam. He says Adam opened up when they talked. She's suspicious of him, but she thanks him for what he did.

Adam sneaks out to the old house. Barnabas asks what he's doing there, and Adam pushes the door open and enters. Adam says they haven't seen one another in a long time. Barnabas compliments Adam on his speech. He asks Adam about the phrase he heard on the tape recorder. Adam says Barnabas is afraid of him, and rightfully so. He threatens to kill Barnabas if he doesn't give him what he wants. Barnabas brings up Adam's hurting Joe and planting his body at the old house. Barnabas asks him who has been helping him.

Adam says Barnabas hurt him. Barnabas says he's only done that to protect others. Barnabas reminds Adam of the things he did out of fear in the beginning.  Adam blames Barnabas for making him different from other people, and not telling him. Barnabas tells him Dr. Lang was responsible for creating him. Adam says people fear him because he is ugly. He says he's tired of being alone. Adam tells Barnabas that he will create a woman for him.

Our thoughts

John: Well, things transpired faster than I was expecting. It's pretty clear that Blair planted the idea of a mail-order bride from beyond the grave in Adam's head. But my number one question remains: what's with Adam stabbing himself without actually stabbing himself?

Christine: It's obvious that the knife could not penetrate his rock hard chest. My number one question is where he got the brand new, shiny mirror to break today? I guess he's decided to clean a few cobwebs out of the room, after all. He complained that Barnabas made him ugly when he created him, so what does he think a woman he creates will look like? Probably not as pretty as Carolyn.

Today's episode

Episode 549

John: Carolyn really needs to rethink who she partners with. Harry Johnson and Nicholas Blair are not exactly the most reliable people to have on her side.

Christine: I believe Carolyn's need to rethink who she partners with has been her modus operandi from the beginning of the series. Harry Johnson surprised me by being much kinder to Adam than Willie ever was. Nicholas Blair is really making himself at home at Collinwood, and she should instruct Mrs. Johnson not to let him in the house. I love when he tells her, "Because Adam tried to kill himself, you and I may very probably have become good friends." Possibly may very probably might not, if Vicki has anything to say about it.

John: Barnabas was sporting a smoking jacket from the Hugh Heffner collection today. Looking sharp, as always....

Christine: He seems to be enjoying a solitary night at home, relaxing by the fireside, sipping sherry, and enjoying his freedom from Angelique's curse. Funny how being human has tamed his desire to seek out young females to play the part of his long lost Josette. I'm surprised Julia isn't taking the opportunity to cozy up to him by inviting herself over for a game of chess in the evenings.
