Episode 96 - 11/7/66

Roger arrives in Bangor to drive Vicki home. Vicki describes seeing Mr. Blair's identical pen to Burke's. She said that Mr. Blair described six in the world; four in South America, Blair's, and Burke's. Roger says she shouldn't mention it, and she says that it places Burke at the potential scene of the crime. Roger doesn't want her to talk to anyone about it, including his sister. Vicki can't understand why Roger doesn't want the particularly damning evidence against Burke to come forward. Next thing you know, Roger decides to take a back road back to Collinwood.

After breaking down on the road in bad weather, the sheriff arrives at Collinwood and asks to use the phone. He calls to get his car towed, and also to request a car to pick him up. Liz prepares coffee for him. A call comes in for the sheriff; the back road to Bangor is impassible as well.

Roger stops the car to investigate a possible washout of the road. He returns indicating he found an abandoned place where they could stay. When he gets back to the car, it won't start. He leaves a note in the car, and escorts Vicki out in the rain.

The sheriff thanks Liz for her hospitality as he leaves.

Roger escorts Vicki to the abandoned shack. They light a fire in the stove. Vicki asks Roger why David would admit to stealing the pen and then lie about hiding it. Roger says he doesn't understand David. She asks what Roger wants out of life, and he says, one - to have someone rescue them, and two - to have Vicki leave Collinwood. Roger goes on to discuss Burke, and how he might have accidentally killed Bill. Roger asks Vicki to never mention the pen to anyone, ever. She says that's withholding evidence, and he shouts at her to withhold it; calling her an idiot. The sheriff arrives in the shack, having come across Roger's car. Vicki pauses, but does not mention the pen.

Our thoughts

John: Based on his past behavior, I can't believe Vicki would believe Roger would not take advantage of even the slightest opportunity to see Burke Devlin put back in jail.

Christine: I guess she believed him when he said the evidence was weak. He's taking a big chance on her not saying anything about it to Carolyn, who can confirm that Roger had the pen last. I guess he's not much of a killer or he would have done her in. It must be easier for Roger to get his psycho son to do that sort of dirty work.

John: Interesting how the sheriff doesn't ask Roger about being out after Liz explained everyone (but Vicki) was home. Maybe he'll think about that before they get back to Collinwood.

Christine: The Sheriff has been rather suspicious of Roger in the past, so you'd think he'd be on to that.

John: What's Vicki going to do? And why do I think we won't know until Friday!

Christine: This was another Take #2 episode. I wonder what happened during the first take. Maybe the shack fell apart. It was a nice touch that they kept the lightning and thunder going through end credits.

Episode 95 - 11/4/66

Over dinner, Vicki tells Frank that one of the reasons she needed to get out of Collinwood for a few days was that she saw the ghost of Bill Malloy. Frank tells her that she must have been dreaming. He asks why she's going back if she's so frightened by the house, and she says that she feels like she belongs there.

Burke returns to the restaurant, and tells Vicki he'll be leaving in 30 minutes. She thanks him. Frank is disappointed, as he was hoping to drive her back. Frank asks her if she and Devlin are more than friends, and she says she doesn't know Burke very well. She says sometimes he's kind, and others he can be violent and threatening. Frank is thrilled to know that she doesn't have a boyfriend. He asks her out on a date, and she agrees.

Burke goes over Logansport paperwork with Blair. He confirms that Elizabeth hasn't yet made a bid. Burke tells Blair to raise his bid 10%. He explains that he's willing to overpay if necessary. Vicki returns, and Burke leaves her with Blair while he goes to check out.

Blair is surprised to hear that Vicki is from Collinwood; he wasn't aware that Burke had friends there. He starts to sign some contracts, and Vicki notices his pen. He says it was a gift from Burke. She explains that she found one at lookout point, and he says that's all but impossible. There are only six in existence, and Burke acquired them in South America. Vicki falters and tells Blair that the pen she found was different.

Burke returns to sign the documents, and mentions that his pen is missing. After Blair leaves, Vicki says she has to make a telephone call. Burke asks her to hurry.

Vicki tries unsuccessfully to call Frank Garner. Then she calls Collinwood.

Roger answers the phone. Vicki asks him to come pick her up in Bangor. She says she's in danger. She says she thinks Burke's involved with Bill Malloy's death. She tells Roger the pen she found on the beach was Burke's, and it could mean that he was there when Bill died. Roger says not to mention the pen to Burke, but tell him she can't go with him, and that he'll come get her.

Vicki tells Burke that she's going to stay in Bangor another night. He doesn't understand, as she waited all night and already checked out of the hotel, but he doesn't argue and leaves her alone in the hotel.

Roger leaves Collinwood to go to Bangor to get Vicki.

Our thoughts

John: Will Frank Garner develop into a long-distance love interest for Vicki? And will Carolyn be jealous when she gets a look at him? The show has really felt like a soap opera this week.

Christine: Handsome Frank Garner would be ideal for Vicki. How dumb was Vicki not to ditch Burke and get a ride back with Frank, even before she suspected him of murder? Carolyn won't be jealous of a nice fellow like Frank when she wants a bad boy like Burke.

John: Did we really need to know just how rare and exclusive the Burke Devlin pen was? Isn't it enough that the pen Vicki found on the beach could be identified by Carolyn as the one in her uncle's possession the night Bill died? I guess not.

Christine: Yes, we did need to know so that Vicki would have a reason to suspect Burke and so we're not thinking that there are a million of them out there that could have been dropped by anyone on that beach. If it was one of a rare few, then it had to be the pen Burke gave to Carolyn that Roger lost in the place where Bill Malloy likely died.

John: Sure, just another fancy pen that ended up in the last place Bill's body would have been alive... just a coincidence. It's an interesting twist that Vicki now believes the pen she found points to Burke's possible involvement in Bill Malloy's murder. Of course we know that theory can quickly be debunked if she comes forward with that information. Though Roger can always dig up the pen, can he explain how it found its way to the beach where Bill may have died while in his possession? I'll admit that I was a bit disappointed with this Bangor trip when it was looking like it only served to setup a new love interest for Vicki. Nice way to turn things around on Friday afternoon!

Christine: Just when we thought the pen was dead and buried. Will Roger take the opportunity to get rid of Miss Winters on the way back to Collinwood?

Episode 94 - 11/3/66

While Vicki and Frank are together in Bangor, Joe and Carolyn are together at The Blue Whale in Collinsport. Joe accuses Carolyn of pretending to have a good time. She tells Joe that Vicki saw the ghost of Bill Malloy. Joe asks Carolyn what's going on between them. Carolyn says she's sorry, and Joe says the last time she said she was sorry, she immediately turned on him again. She says she called him because she wanted to be with him more than anyone else. Joe asked if that was even more than Burke Devlin. Sam and Maggie arrive, and Carolyn invites them to join them. Maggie is uncomfortable, but they do.

Vicki and Frank have dinner in Bangor. Vicki tells her story. Frank says he'll do anything in his power to help her solve her problem.

Carolyn compliments Maggie's dress before she and Joe dance. While dancing, Joe asks Carolyn why she invited Maggie and her father to join then. Carolyn says she was being polite, and wanted Maggie to know there were no hard feelings. At the table, Sam tries to explain to Maggie that there's no chance of a future with Joe.

Frank says he'll start tracking down the Hanscombe's to see what he can find. Frank's father arrives, and tells his son that he's got an important case to work on in the morning. Frank invites his father to join them for a drink. He explains what he's offered to do for Vicki, and his father suggests to Vicki that she not get her hopes up.

Carolyn flirts with Joe, and Maggie explains she has to go. Sam says he wants to walk her home, but after he has another drink. Vicki comes up in conversation, and Carolyn explains that she's gone to Bangor, to get away after seeing Bill Malloy's ghost. Sam is very interested in the details about what Bill's ghost said to her. Carolyn said the ghost told her to stay away from Collinwood, as it's not safe for her there. Maggie suggests Vicki might be lonely in Bangor by herself, and Carolyn says she went with her intimate friend, Burke Devlin. Joe abruptly asks Carolyn to dance again to get her away from the table.

Joe calls Carolyn a liar. He says that once again she only called him because she was jealous of Vicki and Burke. Carolyn storms out on him, and as he chases after her, Maggie smiles.

Frank's father excuses himself, and before he leaves Frank asks to speak to him, asking if he has something against Vicki. His father says he has no problem with Frank's trying to help her, but he needs to remember Elizabeth Stoddard is their client—NOT Victoria Winters.

Sam orders another drink, and Maggie says he promised they'd leave three drinks ago. Sam explains that he needs the drink right now. Joe returns and joins them. He says he brought Carolyn home. Sam asks Joe to see Maggie home, as he plans to take a long walk. Maggie apologizes for being foisted off on Joe. He says it's no problem, and says she's a nice girl for not asking about what happened with Carolyn. Maggie asks why Joe returned, and he explains he wanted to continue his lessons, and asks her to name all of the sails on a ship. She laughs and begins listing them all...

Our thoughts

John: Bob Cobert's greatest hits are back on the Blue Whale's jukebox.

Christine: Just like old times. Don't those catchy tunes just make you want to get up and dance and argue with your girlfriend?

John: How come the word orphan is avoided at all costs? Who refers to them as 'foundlings'?

Christine: An orphan refers to someone whose parents are dead, while a foundling refers to someone who was abandoned by parents that may still be alive. Vicki doesn't really know if her parents are alive or dead.

John: Have we finally seen the end of the Joe/Carolyn relationship? Now that it's clear to Joe that Carolyn only comes running to him when she's jealous, I think he's had enough of her. The only offenses on Maggie's record are the bad blonde wig she started with, and calling Vicki a jerk when they first met. But other than that, she's far less maintenance than Carolyn, so hopefully the change will do Joe some good, provided his job working for the Collins fishery isn't in jeopardy...

Christine: It's a soap opera, so I expect the relationship to go through its death throes before the last gasp. Joe's a glutton for punishment, so I don't think it's over yet.

Episode 93 - 11/2/66

Liz hangs up on her call from Richard Garner. Roger asks what the call was about. Liz tells him that Vicki asked for a few days off, and is in Bangor with Burke Devlin. Roger suggests it wasn't a coincidence, and could have been arranged beforehand. Liz asks Roger if there's anything else Vicki might tell Burke. Roger says no, and asks why Vicki didn't leave permanently. Liz says it's because David pleaded with her to stay.

Roger goes to talk to David and runs into Carolyn. She's still upset about Vicki and Burke.

In his room, Roger asks David what he's doing. David is drawing Bill Malloy's ghost, as described by Vicki. Roger asks why David changed his mind about Vicki. David says that the ghosts are the reason. David talks about Bill Malloy. and says that his ghost might tell who killed him. He might even tell him that Roger killed him. With that, Roger slaps him and David runs downstairs.

In the drawing room, Liz reiterates that she thinks Burke is attractive. Carolyn says she hopes she never sees him again. Liz says she recently said that about Joe. David runs in claiming his father hit him. Liz escorts David upstairs as he wishes his father was dead.

Carolyn calls Burke in Bangor, She doesn't reach him live and is upset. Carolyn tells her mother why Vicki went to Bangor - to research B. Hanscombe. She says the portrait of Betty Hanscombe looked like Vicki. Liz explains she was the daughter or niece of their butler. Liz asks why Vicki didn't ask her. Carolyn asks if she would have told her anyway. Carolyn swings back to Vicki and Burke. Liz brings up Carolyn's father. She explains the romance between them was really more the love between her father and the Collins money. She does say there was another man she loved. Carolyn assumes it was Bill, but Liz explains it was Ned Calder. She says Joe reminds her of Ned, and that the way she's treating Joe is the same way she treated Ned. She warns Carolyn not to make the same mistake she did. Carolyn calls Joe and asks about their date tonight (which obviously hadn't yet been scheduled).

Roger comes downstairs as Carolyn runs by happy to be alive. He tells Liz that she has to get rid of Vicki. He says she's a bad influence on David—like talking about Bill Malloy's ghost. Roger also says she needs to sell Collinwood—to Burke Devlin if he'll still buy it. Liz says she plans to spend the rest of her life in Collinwood. Roger asks what she'll do if he leaves, and takes David. She says he loves money more than his son. Roger asks Liz what is between she and Victoria Winters. Liz sticks with the party line. She also adds that she's not worried about Vicki saying anything to Burke.

Our thoughts

John: The Carolyn roller coaster once again flies off the track; once again over Vicki and Burke. Even Liz is getting sick of it. We'll see if she can woo Joe back, or if he's already too far gone with his new squeeze, Maggie Evans.

Christine: He'll be back.

John: David gets a long overdue slap in the face from his father. Certainly a high point of the episode.

Christine: He does need some type of redirection, though I'm not sure a slap in the face is what will turn the delinquent around. Perhaps the ghosts will set him straight.

John: Roger does a full court press on Liz to get rid of Vicki, but she refuses to budge on the issue.

Christine: It must have something to do with what happened 18 years ago when Paul Stoddard left, Vicki started receiving money at the foundling home, baby Carolyn was born, and B. Hanscombe the butler was discharged, along with the rest of the servants. Roger should be careful lest he raise Elizabeth's suspicions.

Episode 92 - 11/1/66

Vicki is in Bangor to find out about her past from Richard Garner, of the Collins' attorneys Garner & Garner. She shows him the ledger she found referencing B. Hanscombe, and asks if he knows her. He says the only Hanscombe he knew was a man—the Collins' butler, who was let go with the rest of the staff 10 years ago. She also meets Garner's son Frank, who she also tells her story to after his father leaves to go to court. He offers to search through their files for an address for B. Hanscombe.

At her hotel in Bangor, Vicki goes into the restaurant for lunch. Burke Devlin walks in and joins her. He orders lunch, and suggests that from her look, she didn't find what she was looking for. He offers to drive her home that night, and says he has some business to attend to first. As he leaves, Frank Garner shows up. Vicki introduces the men. After Burke leaves, Frank says that his father represented Roger Collins in the court case that sent Burke away. The food Burke ordered arrives, and Frank decides to eat it. Frank tells Vicki that he hasn't found any information on Hanscombe yet, but promises to keep looking.

Back in his office, Richard Garner calls Liz and lets her know that Vicki stopped by and asked a number of questions about her past. He assures her that everything is under control, and that she should leave everything to him.

Our thoughts

John: A lot of sitting around and talking in just two locations today. Will Frank be a new possible love interest for Vicki? And is a long distance relationship possible?

Christine: He may be a love interest. Perhaps he'll make the trip to Collinsport for Miss Vicki Winters. Carolyn would certainly be happy if she took up with Frank and left Burke to her.

John: Burke starts to order a drink, then changes his mind and duplicates Vicki's grilled cheese and coffee order, only to get up and leave almost immediately. Though he was nice enough to offer it to Frank before departing.

Christine: Is grilled cheese the kind of thing you order in a posh restaurant with soothing music? There sure are a lot of water glasses on the table.

John: When your idea of fine dining is the restaurant in Collinsport, a grilled cheese sandwich in Bangor probably IS considered high class. So Garner senior has more info than he's sharing. Will little Frank be able to extract whatever his Dad knows to impress his new gal pal?

Christine: Let's hope so! What information is Elizabeth Stoddard hiding about Victoria Winters? Will we ever know?
