Dark Shadows Episode 596 - 10/7/68

Julia walks to the master switch and turns it off. She says Leona is dead. They hear a moaning under the sheet of Adam's mate. He slowly removes the bandages and says her eyes are open. He exclaims that, "she is alive!" He says that she doesn't look like Carolyn, but she's beautiful. Julia laments that they killed a woman. Barnabas dismisses it, since she was going to die anyway. Adam says something is wrong with Eve, as she doesn't seem responsive.

Julia suggests that being brought to life this way must be traumatic. She tries to determine if she feels anything, but Adam stops her. He talks to Eve, trying to get her to respond to him. Eve remains unresponsive. Adam points out that she breathes, but that is all, and blames Julia for making a mistake. Adam allows Julia to check Eve. She says her pulse and heartbeat are normal. Julia suggests there could be an issue with her mind. She offers to call an ambulance from Windcliff, and Adam refuses to allow it.

Eve groans, and clutches Adam's hand. She sits up and speaks. She asks who Adam is, and when he tells her his name, she says it's appropriate that the first man she sees is named Adam. She asks who the others are, and why they're staring at her.

Eve says it's been a long journey from another time; another place. Barnabas asks her what she means, and Eve says she doesn't know. Julia asks Barnabas how she can speak and know so much. Julia goes to give her a shot, and she screams. She tries to get up to run away, but she collapses. They hear a door upstairs, and a knocking on the basement door. Barnabas calls upstairs, and hears Stokes. He lets him in, and he sees the experiment has been completed. He asks Barnabas to speak to him privately. Barnabas asks Adam to take Eve to Josette's room. Stokes says he has proof in the drawing room, and Barnabas says he doesn't care what he has discovered, adding that now that Eve is alive, it's no concern of his.

In Josette's room, Julia suggests Eve fainted because she stood up too quickly. Adam starts to follow her as she leaves,

In the drawing room, Stokes manipulates letters on a magnetic board. He has 'Leona Eltridge' spelled out. Julia comes downstairs, and he asks if they both recognize the name. Barnabas says she died downstairs. Stokes says not for the first time, and shuffles the letters, spelling Danielle Roget.

Barnabas asks who that is. Stokes says she was the most evil woman the 18th century produced. Barnabas is not impressed. Stokes suggests that if Blair found out about the experiment, and provided Adam with a life force, he would have selected someone from the depths of hell. Barnabas refuses to believe it. Stokes says if the woman has the life force of Danielle Roget, no one is safe, and she must be destroyed.

Eve asks why Adam cares about what others say about her. She tells him to come closer, and looks at him. She says he's kind, and strong. She tells him to kiss her, and then she kisses him.

Barnabas says he appreciates Stokes' sincerity, but he can't believe his suppositions. He says he just wants Adam to take Eve and leave. Adam comes downstairs and says they will leave as soon as she is rested. Stokes begs Barnabas to explain to Adam why he can't be alone with Eve. Stokes says Eve is cruel, and not the woman for him. Adam doesn't understand, saying she has done nothing. Stokes says Eve is the reincarnation of the most evil woman ever born.

Eve is in Josette's room when she hears something. Wind blows through the curtains, a door swings open, and the chandeliers shake. Eve speaks to the unseen spirit, saying she remembers who it is, and despite it coming after her, she will not go back with it. She declares that she is alive, and she will never go back.

Our thoughts

John: Once again, we must wonder why the host body was fully-dressed on the operating table, right down to her shoes.

Christine: Not only that she was fully dressed, but dressed in a filmy evening gown, and stockings along with the shoes! Julia and Barnabas must have felt it wouldn't have been appropriate for Adam to see his mate naked before making her acquaintance, and thought she should be dressed to the nines to appease him, since he was so particular about her appearance.

John: So are we to believe that Eve was an example of Lang's experiment working as expected, and Adam was defective? I'm beginning to wonder if Lang or Julia had any idea what they were doing.

Christine: How long before Nicholas Blair installs Julia into his basement to begin producing his army of the undead? Surely he can't wait for Adam and Eve to get that loving feeling.

John: I love how through his word jumble puzzle, Stokes figures out what's going on, right down to Blair's involvement. Of course describing Danielle Roget as the most evil woman ever born is probably going to ruffle Angelique's feathers...

Christine: I thought the anagram was a deliberate steal from Rosemary's Baby, which was released several months prior to this episode. When will these evil folks learn to be a little more creative when constructing an alias? Can we assume that it's Josette who's shown up to escort Ms. Roget back to the land of the dead where she belongs, or some other french speaking entity? It will be interesting to see the relationship between the two constructed creatures develop.
