Stokes tells Adam that Eve is the reincarnation of the most evil woman ever born. He says she was the most feared woman in the world in the 18th Century. Adam tells him he is wrong.

In Josette's room, Eve sits on the bed. She hears a sound at the window and gets up. A wind blows through the curtains, the door swings open, and she hears rattling chimes. She speaks to someone who is not there, declaring that she remembers them, and she knows they have come after her. She says she is alive, and will never go back.

Stokes asks Adam to admit that he's never advised him incorrectly. He adds that he must listen to him now. Adam asks Barnabas if he believes Stokes, and Barnabas replies that he has no reason not to. Adam reminds Stokes that Julia and Barnabas made Eve. Stokes says his objection isn't with the body; it's with the life force. He asks Adam what the secret is with the woman he brought in to the experiment. Adam denies there is any secret. Stokes asks if he can question Eve. Barnabas tells him that he owes that much to Stokes. Stokes says that if he is wrong about her, he will admit it. Adam says that he will speak to her first. He warns them that he will hold them both responsible for whatever happens to her. Adam goes upstairs, and Barnabas worries that he'll warn her. Stokes says Adam knows that he is more often right than wrong.

Adam comes into Josette's room, and Eve tells him that he should not leave her alone, as she doesn't like it. He asks if she's afraid, and she says if it pleases him, then yes, she's afraid. He says it's a matter of truth, not pleasing him. He asks if she knows the truth about them. She asks if she has to, and he tells her it's important. He says they're not like other people. He realizes that it doesn't trouble her the way it did him.

He then adds that he has changed. She tells him she almost remembered something before he was gone. He calls her Leona, and she asks what he called her. He says he called her Leona Eltridge, and asks if she remembered the name. She says she doesn't know it. He then asks if she's heard of Nicholas Blair. She says no, and that she doesn't like questions. He says that he must ask because others will. She says he can tell his friends to leave her alone. Adam says she's different than him, but not what they say. She asks what they say when there's a knock at the door.

She says he can turn them away. She then turns her head and tells Adam she does not kiss men who are weak. He says she will have to forgive him as he lets in Stokes and Barnabas. Stokes introduces himself to her. She asks what her name is, and Adam says that it is Eve. She says that she is a woman, and she accepts what happens to her, as she has no choice. Stokes says it's a fascinating observation, referring to her as mademoiselle. She asks what that means, and he says it's a French word.

Adam leaves them, and Barnabas explains that they're interested in why she's not more like Adam. Stokes says she referred to coming from another time; another place. She says she has no memory. Stokes says English does not appear to have been her native language. He says he would assume it was French. Barnabas asks if she remembers anything, and Stokes offers some words to offer a frame of reference. He says guillotine, Marie Antoinette, Danielle Roget... and then she replies with Leona Eltridge, saying Adam brought it up.

Barnabas says he's surprised she doesn't have any questions. She asks if she has to stay. Stokes asks if she'd like to go, and she replies she's used to her questions being answered. Barnabas asks her where she became used to that. She says she doesn't know, and asks what they want from her.

Adam paces in the drawing room. Julia tells him that Stokes is concerned about his mate because he is concerned about Adam. He asks what she thinks, saying she always has an opinion, and she tells him she has none this time. He says he wants to take Eve away before they ruin everything. He assures Julia she's not what they say.

In the hallway outside Josette's room, Stokes asks Barnabas if he believes her, and he says he does not. Stokes says that Adam and Eve must stay until they know more.

Stokes asks Adam how he found Leona Eltridge. He says she found him. Stokes asks how, and Adam refuses to answer more questions. Barnabas says he has decided it would be best for both of them to stay for the time being. He says they want to keep Eve under observation. Stokes tells Adam there's no need for them to leave tonight. He adds that Julia can check her in the morning. Adam accuses Stokes of still believing what he did about Eve. Stokes says he's right, and if she is Danielle Roget... The front door bursts open, and Stokes says he can feel another presence in the room with them. He calls to it, and the chandelier swings.

They hear the cellar door swing open, and they run downstairs. The body of Leona Eltridge is missing. Barnabas asks who could have taken her. Stokes says when you deal with spirits, do not expect the logical. He asks where Adam is, and Julia says she's sure he's with Eve.

They go into Joestte's room and find Adam and Eve gone. Stokes says he knows the one place they must be.

Our thoughts

John: Danielle/Eve isn't particularly convincing when trying to deny she has any prior awareness. I do love when she specifically tells them that she's used to her questions being answered!

Christine: She seems to have prior awareness of how to manipulate men.

John: Poor Adam has already been rebuffed by his girlfriend for not standing up to his friends in her defense. I don't see this as the foundation for a lasting relationship.

Christine: Eve is clearly the one with the upper hand in the relationship.

John: So do you think the spirit that showed up at the end was the same one that was communicating with Eve earlier? They made some of the same noises. Could it be our old pal Reverend Trask, back to do the Lord's work?

Christine: I'd love to see Trask again, except I don't think he'd be speaking French. Josette was my first guess because of the language, and because Eve was in her room, but it doesn't seem to be her either. I'd suspect Angelique, except I don't think she currently has access to ghostly powers. I guess we'll have to wait for this spirit to reveal itself. Now that Adam and Eve have left the Garden of Eden Old House, where is the one place Stokes thinks they will go? The obvious places are Blair's House by the Sea, the Root Cellar where he took Carolyn when he kidnapped her, or his cobwebby room at Collinwood. Surely he doesn't have the coin to put her up at the Collinsport Hotel.

I just want to acknowledge the fabulous tie Prof. Stokes was wearing today.
