Angelique massages Barnabas' forehead, easing his headache. He gets up to leave before Reverend Trask arrives. He says the man is a fanatic capable of extreme cruelty. She asks if he knows where Victoria is, and he says he does not. She says Trask is right about Vicki. She says she is a witch who must be found and destroyed. He asks why she thinks that, and Angelique says she must be the cause of the strange things that have been happening. Barnabas tells her he is convinced Vicki has nothing to do with it. Angelique says he's not the best judge of women, and then reminds him of what happened with Josette. She encourages him to say that he hates Josette, and he does.

She asks him to let her love him, promising to make him happy. He says yes, and they kiss. She gets him to promise to come and see her later.

Trask interrogates Nathan, who holds firm saying that he has no information about Victoria Winters. Trask warns him that his career would be ended if he becomes involved in this scandal.

Josette comes to see Trask. He asks about Jeremiah, and she says he's not doing well. He asks if Josette knew Victoria well, and if there was any reason she would hate her. Josette doesn't believe Vicki was possessed by the devil. Trask asks to see her hands. He sees the devil's brand, and says the devil has marked her.

He asks when it first appeared. She says it was when she first arrived at the house. He asks how she feels when it is present. She says she feels different, and he tells her the devil must be exorcised from her body.

Barnabas is in his room when Nathan joins him. He tells him that Vicki is hiding in the loft above the stable. Barnabas offers to bring her food, and Nathan says that she's not safe, and neither are they as long as they hide her. He tells him that Trask threatened his career. He says if questioned again, he may have to tell the truth.

Josette asks if Trask really thinks she's been bewitched. He is sure of it. He explains that she is not responsible for what she did when under the devil's spell. She wants to believe that, but does not. She notices that the brand is gone, and he asks what caused it to go away. She doesn't know. He asks if she feels different, and she says she can think more clearly about everything. He says he must cleanse her body by performing a rite of exorcism.

He places his hands on her head when Barnabas calls for him to stop.

Trask tells Barnabas that she's been under a spell causing her to act against her will. Barnabas asks what she's done against her will. She says nothing, and Barnabas tells her there's nothing more for him to do. She asks Trask not to continue, and Barnabas tells him that she is not going through with his ceremony. Trask reluctantly stops, and leaves to search for Vicki.

Barnabas asks Josette if that was cruel of her, pretending to be bewitched. He asks if she felt bewitched when she married Jeremiah. She reiterates that Jeremiah is dying, and that is all that matters. Barnabas gets her to say she was never under a spell. As he turns to leave, she says she wishes that things could have been different. He asks her what she would have changed, and she says nothing.

Angelique visits Barnabas and asks why he didn't come to her. He tells her that it isn't going to work.

He still loves Josette in spite of everything. She asks if Josette said something to make him feel this way. He says that he doesn't hate her; he worships her. Angelique is angry, and points out Josette's betrayal.

Angelique tells him she could make him happy, and he tells her he can't love anyone but Josette.

She doesn't take well to not being good enough for him.

She picks up a doll and says Sarah must have left it, and she has to return it. She leaves his room.

In her room, Angelique says it's not possible for them to be friends, and now he's going to pay, but not through Josette, but through his sister Sarah.

Our thoughts

John: It took a long time for the narration to point out that they've gone back in time, and everyone  looks like someone from the present. Do you think they were getting letters from casual viewers asking what the hell was going on?

Christine: It's possible, though it's probably more likely that word was spreading about this cool soap opera and they needed to explain what was going on for new viewers. Josette does not appear to be too broken up about her wounded, dying husband, nor does anyone else in the house. I guess there's no sympathy for him after he stole Barnabas' bride on their wedding night.

John: Poor Barnabas. Literally sucked in by Angelique.

Christine: I don't think we should feel too sorry for him. He was jerking her around by being hot for her in the beginning of the episode and cold at the end. Then, worst of all he says, "Is it still possible that we can be friends?"

John: Damn! Angelique is going to put a hex on Sarah now? That's ruthless! If she's ultimately responsible for Sarah's death, I can't see Barnabas feel anything but hatred towards her for hundreds of years to come!

Christine: It's what makes her truly maleficent. She could just hex Barnabas and be done with it, but she wants to exact the most cruel sort of revenge possible that inflicts maximum damage on the whole family.
