Dark Shadows Episode 1245 4/2/71 - The Finale!

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Morgan goes to the room and unlocks the door. He steps inside holding a gun. The ghost of Brutus appears and says he shall not have them, they are his!

In the secret room, next to the corpses, Bramwell tells Catherine that it's almost dawn. They embrace. He asks if they ended it. She says Brutus will try something else. Bramwell says that they have defeated him repeatedly, and can do so again. He asks if after this night, she has any doubt that they were meant to be together. He says he has money now, and they will leave Collinwood.

Brutus appears before them, laughing about their plan, and calls to Amanda. He calls her to him. Bramwell tells him it's over. Brutus calls her and says that all he wants is Amanda's forgiveness. Catherine says yes and approaches him. She asks Brutus if he still loves her, and he says he never stopped loving her. He tells her to come to him and they will be together for all eternity. She tries to go to him, but Bramwell holds her back. Bramwell is mysteriously choked again, and Brutus laughs at him. Catherine comes out of her spell and Brutus says that he must die. They hear a rooster. Brutus tells her to come to him, and she says she ever will. She say s they will bury the bodies in holy ground, and Amanda will finally have peace. She tells him to go from this house and never return again. She says it's done. He asks if she refuses him, and when she says she will never come to him, he says she has won, and disappears.

She tells Bramwell the curse is over, and he says that it's because of their love. He says they must be meant for each other. She says she will leave with him today. She then realizes that Morgan will never let them go. They exit the secret room, and run into Morgan with his gun. He points out that Bramwell has ended the curse, and probably wants some sort of gratitude. He says he's not going to get it, or Catherine, and shoots him at point blank range.

Catherine consoles Bramwell. She tells Morgan that if he kills Bramwell, he'll have to kill her, too. He picks her up, when Julia and Kendrick come in. Morgan threatens to shoot Catherine if they try to stop him. They run out, and Kendrick follows after them. Bramwell tells Julia that he'll be alright as she helps him out of the room. Kendrick returns and says he lost them. Bramwell tells him that they took a secret passage. Kendrick asks Julia to check on Melanie, and goes in search of Morgan.

Flora tells Julia that she should be looking for Morgan. She says she could talk to him. Julia asks what she'd say. She says they need to check on Melanie. They go into the tower room and find her asleep. Flora wakes her. Her first words are, "Mama, did something happen to Kendrick?" Flora tells her that she's well now. She asks where Kendrick is, and they say he'll be there soon. She says she never should have married him, and they explain that Bramwell and Catherine stayed in the room, the curse is over, and so is she. She asks if they're okay, and Julia says they left the room sane. Melanie assumes Kendrick left her, and Julia offers to go get him. She asks her mother why he's not there, and she says he'll be happy to see her. She adds that her father would have loved to know that the curse was finally over. Flora says it will never be the same without Justin, without Gabriel, and with Morgan the way he is. Melanie asks her to tell her everything that has happened.

Julia goes into the drawing room. Kendrick comes through the secret panel. Julia initially thought it was Morgan, but when she sees him, she tells Kendrick that Melanie is alright. He says he heard Catherine and Morgan, and Bramwell is upstairs searching. He goes upstairs to see Melanie.

Bramwell finds Catherine's handkerchief in the secret passages.

Melanie asks her mother if Morgan's madness is real, and not the result of the curse, and she says it is. Melanie says Catherine never intended to hurt Morgan. Kendrick comes in and hugs Melanie. He says he can't stay long. She tells him to be careful, and they kiss.

Morgan and Catherine end up on the roof of Collinwood. He says Bramwell will find them there, and calls to him. He tells Catherine to look down, and ask her to imagine falling to her death. He says her lover is coming. She screams for Bramwell not to come. When he comes out onto the roof, Morgan points out that he has come to watch Catherine die. Bramwell asks Morgan to let him take her place. Morgan says she is going to die first, and then he is going to die. Bramwell apologizes for turning Morgan into who he is now. Morgan says that this is the way it has got to be. Kendrick comes up from behind Morgan. Catherine runs free, and he Kendrick and Bramwell grapple before Morgan falls through the railing.

Flora is despondent about Morgan. She says it's hard not to blame Catherine and Bramwell. Julia reminds her that they ended the curse. She then says they have to make arrangements for Morgan's funeral.

Melanie tells Kendrick that they can't leave yet. He assures her that Julia can take care of Flora. She agrees to leave with him. They kiss passionately.

Catherine and Bramwell also kiss passionately. He tells her that everything will be alright. She expresses guilt for being responsible for Morgan's death. He tells her that they will leave Collinwood, and they will forget everything that happened there. She says she won't forget — she says she will remember to follow her heart. They kiss again.

Flora tells Bramwell that the family has been split apart in troubled times, and suggests that perhaps now they should stay together if they possibly can. Kendrick comes in and asks if Melanie's ready. They say Harris is bringing her home from the cottage, where she was saying goodbye to Carrie. He tells Flora he appreciates her understanding when Harris and Stokes come in with an unconscious Melanie. He says that he found her lying in the woods. Stokes says she was attacked by a wild animal. They look at her neck — there are two bite marks. They all wonder what could have happened. Stokes says if he didn't know it wasn't possible, he says he'd swear there was a vampire at Collinwood!

We see Bramwell... and then transition to the repainted portrait of Barnabas Collins. Professor(?) Stokes provides a voice-over saying:

There was no vampire loose on the great estate. For the first time at Collinwood, the marks on the neck  were indeed those of an animal. Melanie soon recovered, and went to live in Boston with her beloved Kendrick. There they prospered and had three children.

Bramwell and Catherine were soon married, and at Flora's insistence, stayed on at Collinwood, where Bramwell assumed control of the Collins' business interests. Their love became a living legend, and for as long as they lived, the Dark Shadows at Collinwood were but a memory of a distant past...

Our thoughts:

John: You know what they say, sometimes you feel better after throwing up. I was kidding when I suggested that Bramwell and Catherine's love might end the curse. If anyone, I thought it would have been Kendrick and Melanie's love (considering they got their own little Robert Cobert love theme!). After 160 years of blustering about, it's sad to see Brutus fold his hand against this particular pair... But if you think about it, Brutus got both madness and death — in the form of Morgan Collins. So did he really lose?

Christine: Brutus gave up too easily. It's almost as if he knew it was the last episode and that continuing the curse would be futile.

John: For the second time, at point-blank range, Morgan was incapable of dealing a lethal blow to Bramwell! And not only is it non-lethal, it's all but forgotten by the end of the episode!

Christine: I couldn't figure out why Catherine seemed to be laughing while being dragged off by Morgan. I suppose extreme stress can cause a person to laugh in inappropriate situations. Much like having the giggles during a funeral.

John: I love how they wanted viewers to think that Melanie might be dead in bed this morning.

Christine: I love how Kendrick was flossing with Melanie's hair and then smooched it to try and be subtle about pulling it out of his mouth.

John: Back to the rooftop precipice from episode 1191, where Daniel made Gabriel (NOT of parallel time) fall to his death! I was kinda hoping Justin might appear to make it more like the last time...

Christine: That was a very satisfying scene. Morgan's fall seemed entirely natural and Kendrick almost going over the edge with him lent some realism to the event.

John: We can't bring Quentin back for one episode, but we can have Harris the servant show up for the first time ever? Come on!

Christine: Quentin was out because of appendicitis and was unable to return. Harris the servant was played by show writer, Gordon Russell, which seemed entirely appropriate.

John: Well, that was something of a surprise to end on. I have to admit, I'm of mixed emotions. I love the fact that it basically ended with Melanie brought in with a vampire bite! And while I welcomed a denouement, they didn't need to so solidly deny the possibility of there being a vampire in parallel time. Worse yet, we are provided with summations on these, to be frank, throwaway parallel time characters. How nice it would have been for them to bring us back to 1971 one last time, and tells us what happened to the characters we actually cared about; those we came to know and love (and hate) over the past five years.

Christine: It is disappointing that the principal characters were left mostly dead with an unresolved storyline, but to try and touch base with them in this final episode would have felt too rushed and may have done a disservice. While it is a little sickening that Catherine and Bramwell's love was legendary and banished the "dark shadows" from Collinwood, in a way it provides some resolution to Barnabas and Angelique's story. The nice thing is, we can go back and revisit those characters we knew from the beginning. I'm ready to start over again with the beginning episodes. How about you?

THAT'S IT! IT'S ALL OVER! OR IS IT???

We've concluded our five year mission, but you haven't heard the last of us...

Dark Shadows Episode 1230 3/12/71

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Morgan comes back into Collinwood holding his rope. He sneaks up behind Julia and puts the rope around her neck, choking her. He calls her Constance and tells her it's too late, and that she'll never stop him from seeing Amanda again. Quentin comes in and rescues Julia. He grabs one of the dueling pistols and tells Morgan that he'll use it if he has to. He checks on Julia and confirms that she's still alive. He asks why he tried to kill her. Catherine comes in and Quentin tells her to take care of Julia while he locks Morgan in a room. Morgan tells Catherine that she can tell Constance he'll try again... Quentin leads him upstairs, and Catherine helps Julia up. She says he tried to kill her.

Ben Stokes returns home and Carrie, crying, runs to him and tells him that Morgan has come several times, and each time he's getting worse. She says he's possessed by a man who hated the Collins family. She says she thought he might kill her. Ben sits her down and asks her to tell him the whole story.

Quentin puts Morgan into a room. He says he's arming the servants, and they have orders to shoot to kill if he tries to escape. Morgan pounds on the door and says that when he gets out, he'll kill any Collins he can get his hands on.

Catherine asks Julia if she's feeling better. Julia thanks her, and she says she should thank Quentin, without whom she might be dead. Catherine asks what they can do about Morgan. Julia says that he's as dangerous as Gabriel. Quentin comes in and says there's still hope for Morgan. He asks Julia who Constance is. She explains that she was Brutus' sister. He says that before the possession, Morgan was alright. He thinks the spirit of James Forsythe is back in his own time, reliving those events. He says they have to exorcise Forsythe, after which Morgan will be normal if they succeed. He says they have to hold a seance. Catherine and Julia agree.

Quentin says he'll get Carrie Stokes to be a medium, and as he leaves to get her, Ben Stokes arrives at Collinwood. He asks where Morgan is, telling Quentin that he wants to kill him. He says he doesn't want anyone frightening his daughter, and demands to see Morgan. Quentin says he's under lock and key, and asks Ben to speak with him in the drawing room. Quentin tells Ben that Morgan would never harm anyone. He says that he isn't the one to frighten Carrie. Ben says that's what Carrie said. Quentin says that Morgan is possessed, and they need to hold a seance to exorcise the spirit. He adds that they need Carrie's gift to help Morgan. Ben says she'll be scared. Quentin promises that nothing will harm her.  Ben says he'll ask her, but she'll have to make up her own mind. They leave together to go speak with her.

Catherine comes downstairs and finds Julia in the drawing room. She asks about Morgan. Catherine says she didn't go in, but she heard him moving around in the room. Quentin returns and says that Carrie is coming, and that there will be one more person in the room — Morgan. Julia says that's impossible. Quentin says they'll have to bring him against his will. He takes them into the study.

Catherine comes into Morgan's room. She tells him that she's there to help him, because they share a common goal. She says they both want Constance dead. She says if he agrees, she'll set him free. He asks if she'll let him out if he agrees to kill Contsance. She says yes, and he agrees. She offers him a drink to celebrate, and adds something to it before handing it to him. They toast and drink. Morgan asks when he can get out, and she says some time tomorrow morning. He collapses to the ground, and opens the door so they can get Morgan downstairs.

In the drawing room, Quentin explains that Morgan is unconscious. Carrie asks him what he wants her to do. Quentin says he wants her to contact James Forsythe so they can exorcise him from Morgan. Carrie agrees. Catherine, Julia, Quentin, Ben, Carrie and an unconscious Morgan sit around the table. Carrie calls for the spirit of James Forsythe. She asks for a sign. Lightning flashes outside. Morgan sits up and asks what she wants of him. He says he is James Forsythe. Carries asks why he possessed Morgan. He explains that he did so to be free again, and to right the wrongs that had been done to him. He then says 'he has come to get me again.' Carrie asks who. He says Brutus is in the room. He stands up and says he will not get him. He runs out of the room, and Quentin chases after him. Julia checks upstairs for him. Catherine tells Ben that Carrie will be alright, and he escorts her out of the house.

Julia hears Morgan calling. She finds him and he says he's Forsythe, and Brutus is here, trying to send him back to the tomb He tells her that she must hear the truth of the curse, and what happened in 1680. She begs him to tell her. He says that Brutus is here. He shouts that he will tell the truth about the curse.

Our thoughts:

John: Quentin's tough guy act lost a little weight when he backed into the open door... Of course that gaffe was immediately topped when Morgan calls out how he's going to kill every 'Morgan' he can get his hands on!

Christine: This show continues to deliver top notch entertainment, because I enjoyed that immensely!

John: I love when the crew started closing all of the doors before they kicked off the the seance! I guess those were supposed to be the 'servants' that are oft-mentioned and yet rarely seen... Oh well, at least they gave us one more (could it be our last) chance to break out the Seance tracker!

Christine: I love that we got Ben Stokes back today with a trendy hairstyle.

John: Why waste time telling us about the curse, when you can use a possessed body to tell another spirit that you're about to tell the truth about the curse! How much do you want to bet that we won't find out about the curse on Monday, either?

Christine: I had the same thought, but then it occurred to me that this may be one of those times they will surprise us. At this point in the show, they were probably desperate to have folks come back on Monday to find out, and didn't want to risk losing them by not delivering.

Dark Shadows Episode 1119 10/8/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Ben arrives at Rose Cottage and calls for Desmond. He has the book with him. He goes to the head-in-the-box and removes the cover. He says it's evil, and must be destroyed. Ben sits at a desk across from the head and writes a note. He puts the note in the book, and when he looks up, he sees the head's eyes open, watching him. Ben tells the head that he knows all about him, and will tell everyone about him so he can be destroyed, assuring the head that it can't stop him.

Ben makes his way back to Collinwood. He screams at someone or something not to come near him.

Gerard is in the drawing room when Samantha comes in. She says Roxanne doesn't remember anything that happened. She thanks Gerard for giving her strength when she needed it most. He tells her he wants her to have something, and gives her a small package. In it is a necklace.  She says it's lovely. He wishes her a happy birthday. She says he's the only one who has remembered. She tells him she even forgot herself. She thanks him for being so kind and understanding. She hugs him. Gabriel rolls in and says they always seem to be accosting one another. Samantha explains that Gerard was the only one to remember her birthday. He asks if she always expresses her gratitude so physically. She slaps him across the face and storms off.

Gabriel tells Gerard he's supposed to kill her, not give her presents. Gerard explains that he is minimizing his risk. He says he wants her to tell everyone about the present. He adds that he won't be using arsenic. He has a South American potion that will make her death appear to be the result of a stroke.

Gabriel tells him to use it right now. Gerard points out all of Gabriel's faults, and says if he wants it done now, he can do it himself. He says that by this time tomorrow, Samantha will be dead.

Samantha finds Edith in the playroom. She asks what she's doing there, since she knows it's against the rules. She says the room should be cleaned up. Samantha tells her to get out of the room. She says it's where Tad used to come when he wanted to be alone. Unlike Edith, who couldn't wait to see her son sent off to boarding school.

Edith tells Gabriel they have to get out of the house at once. She says she won't put up with Samantha's hatred any more. He says she's only been back one day. Edith reminds him there's nothing for them in the house. He tells her that Samantha won't be getting any money. He says that starting tomorrow, he's going to make up for being a bad husband. She asks what's happening tomorrow, and he tells her she'll have to wait.

Samantha is asleep in the playroom when Gerard walks in. He startles her. She explains that she found Edith in the room, and after she sent her away, she stayed. He tells her the time has come to forget what was, and he will help her. She embraces him.

Edith is drinking in the drawing room when Gerard steps in. She invites him to join her. He says he's on his way to see Flora at Rose Cottage. She says she's beginning her celebration — the one that Gabriel's been talking about all day. Gerard says that Gabriel talks to much. She asks him to have a sherry with her, and he says there are some things he wouldn't even do for the Collins' family.

Gabriel wheels into the playroom. It's completely redesigned. She says she's thinking about the future. He tells her that one never knows if there's going to be a tomorrow.

Gerard finds Ben's body lying in the forest, a bloody knife in his hand.

Edith says it was a horrible way for Ben to die. Gabriel asks how long Gerard spent with the police. He says it was several hours. They decided it was a suicide. He adds that it looked like Ben cut his own head off. Gabriel tells Edith to tell Carrie. He says he'll talk to his father. Gerard offers to speak to Samantha. He tells Gerard the news will be quite upsetting. Gabriel reminds him that today is the day she's supposed to die. Gerard says he plans to take her into town. Gabriel asks why. Gerard asks if he'd rather she die in her room, or in town, surrounded by witnesses. He says that once she's dead, he'll return to Collinwood—around 6pm.

Samantha comes in and Gabriel tells her that Ben committed suicide. She can't believe it.  Gabriel tells Gerard to fix her a drink. He does, and Gabriel nods to him. Gerard gives her a drink, and tells her she's sorry. She says she should stay and make arrangements. Gerard suggests that there's nothing she can do for Ben. She says they can see the police when they go to he village. She and Gerard leave to go into town.

At 6pm, Gabriel hears a coach approaching. When the door opens, Gerard enters, alone. Gabriel asks if it's done, and Gerard says it is. They go into the drawing room, and Gabriel asks for all the details. Gerard says they went to the police, and then to the bank to see her father. Gabriel asks if she died there. Gerard says they went to the courthouse next, and that's where it happened. Gabriel is giddy with excitement. He asks if there were many people there, and Gerard says there were not too many. He asks if there were witnesses, and Gerard says there were. He asks where the body is, and the door opens and Samantha comes in. She asks if Gerard told him. He says he was just about to. He explains that the two were married that afternoon. Gabriel is speechless.

Our thoughts:

John: Samantha delivers one hell of a bitch-slap to Gabriel. I know it's late in the game for this, but for lucky number 13,  I felt a Collinsport Slap-Tracker was in order!

Christine: A well placed slap is always appreciated on the show, and it looks like a real one was delivered in this case.

John: I was trying to remember when Beth was last lurking around Collinwood when it was confirmed that we were seeing Gabriel's wife, Edith. It would seem that the only reason someone would be in a relationship with Gabriel was for the money... so her treatment by Samantha comes as no surprise.

Christine: I was wondering why Gabriel would be in a relationship with Edith. He doesn't seem overly fond of her. So, Ben cut off his own head? That's horrible! Maybe we should get started on that body parts tracker after all!

John: Even though viewers were unlikely as shocked as Gabriel, I did enjoy them delivering on the telegraphed nuptials of Gerard and Samantha. The only thing I had expected Gerard to do was fix a drink for Gabriel at the same time, killing (pun intended) two birds with one stone. He'd have gotten his hooks into the Collinwood inheritance, while at the same time removing any chance of their being competition for it. I guess at least until Quentin shows up on the doorsteps, waterlogged but otherwise no worse for wear.

Christine: Quentin is bound to show up now that Samantha has married Gerard. I'm only surprised, and a little disappointed, that we didn't have a traditional soap opera wedding, with the 'I-dos' interrupted by the waterlogged, not-dead husband of the bride. Don't miss the portrait of the Mustache Man hanging prominently in Barnabas' spot in the foyer!

Dark Shadows Episode 1118 10/7/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Desmond calls for his mother to return, but she does not. Inside the box, the head opens its eyes. He covers it as Ben comes in. He asks how Desmond scared his mother. Desmond lifts the cover, revealing the head within the box, now with its eyes closed. Ben asks him what possessed him to bring something like that into the house. Desmond says he was going to give it to Quentin. Ben says it brings back bad memories. Desmond says he just brought it from the Far East. Ben suggests that he get rid of it, before it gets rid of them. He adds that they don't need any more tragedy. Desmond covers the head once more.

Barnabas tells Ben he has questions about Quentin and Tad. Ben says he seems like a different person than in the crypt. Barnabas says he'll explains, and asks about Gerard. Ben says he doesn't know what Gerard wants, but he's sure he's up to something. Barnabas says he must meet Daniel Collins. Ben says he might recognize him, and Barnabas explains that's why he must have him on his side.

Daniel writes a letter in the tower room when Ben comes in to visit him. Daniel says he needs help writing a note to Quentin. He says he's appropriated funds from the family business. Ben reiterates that Quentin is dead; lost at sea. Daniel says Quentin always loved the sea. He says they must make the proper funeral arrangements. Ben says a relative is here to see him. Daniel says he's had enough of relatives coming with outstretched palms. When Ben says it's Barnabas, Daniel says he must see him.

Desmond finds Barnabas in the drawing room. He asks if Roxanne has been able to identify her attacker. He says the wound on her neck couldn't be caused by any animal in this area. Desmond asks Barnabas where in London he's from. When Barnabas tells him, Desmond says it's a shame he didn't look him up when he was there.

Ben comes downstairs with Daniel, who exclaims it's amazing. He says Barnabas looks exactly like he did when Daniel was just a boy. Barnabas says he's mistaken. Desmond says it seems to be the night for Barnabas to be confused with his father. Daniel says Barnabas had them worried after running off to England. Barnabas explains that his father went to England in 1797. Daniel says he's just like his father. Daniel speaks of peaceful, happy days when he lived at the old house. He tells Ben to take Barnabas to the old house tomorrow, and says he can stay there as long as he likes.

Gerard comes in, and Daniel asks who he is. Gerard introduces himself to Daniel, and Ben introduces Barnabas to Gerard. Daniel asks what he's doing in the house, and Ben says Gerard is staying in the house, and is the one who told the about Quentin's death. Daniel asks to hear the story of how Quentin died. Gerard says they were struck by a storm. Quentin was at the bow when Tad reached him and tried to take him below deck. A wave hit them, and they were both gone. Daniel asks Ben if Tad is dead, too. Gerard explains he brought a lifeboat as soon as he could, but he couldn't find them. Ben and Barnabas help Daniel upstairs.

After they get to the tower room, Barnabas leaves Ben with Daniel. Daniel says they're a family born to tragedy. He asks Ben what's wrong with them. Daniel says seeing Barnabas and hearing about Roxanne's attack reminds him of 1797 — the strange attacks in the village; rumors of Angelique; the suicide of Barnabas' mother... He says he has a terrible feeling some incredible horror is going to happen to them again. Ben asks if he remembers recent stories of murders not too long ago, and a petrified head. Daniel says he remembers reading about the murders, and the disembodied head. He says he read about it in Millicent's book. Ben reminds him that Millicent is dead. Daniel says the book should still be there.

Ben finds the book and reads from it. He realizes that he has to have Desmond destroy the head before it destroys them.

Barnabas comes downstairs and speaks to Gerard. He asks how long he's been in Collinwood. Gerard says it's been several months since he brought the news. Barnabas asks him if Quentin actually died at sea. Gerard says there could be no question. Barnabas says that with no body, there's no proof he's actually dead. Gerard says he couldn't survive, and asks why Barnabas has so many questions. Gerard bids Barnabas goodnight, and walks out.

Ben comes downstairs, and Barnabas asks him where he's going. He says he has to do something, and will be back soon.

Our thoughts:

John: One wonders why Desmond would think Quentin would want a human head in a box? Perhaps we'll soon find out!

Christine: I believe he said he got it because of his interest in the occult. What do you suppose the market is for reproductions of Dark Shadows body parts? We've almost got enough body parts for a tracker, with the Head, the Hand of Count Petofi, Adam's arm and the mutilated corpses his parts came from.

John: I thought it was cool that Daniel responded so well to seeing Barnabas, both when he thought he was his elder ancestor, and even after he was described as a relative of more recent vintage. He was quite prompt to offer Barnabas the old house, before he even had a chance to ask for the privilege.

Christine: It was nice hearing Daniel refer to Millicent and tie in those characters we met so long ago in 1795, 1796, 1797, though it seems unlikely that Millicent would be keeping a book on "Relics of the Anti-Saints." It would have been interesting to hear him bring up the time Vicki shot Noah Gifford in the back to save him.

John: Barnabas has all but confirmed what we've been thinking all along — it seems unlikely that Quentin died at sea. Won't it be interesting to see when he walks in the door, perhaps waterlogged, to see what Gerard is up to in Collinwood!

Christine: That should be a fine moment! Is this the end of Ben Stokes? Perhaps it was unwise to tell a petrified head that was supposedly responsible for several murders that he was going to tell everyone about it and have it destroyed, and then challenge it to stop him.
