Dark Shadows Episode 951 2/16/70

Barnabas takes the Leviathan box back to the altar. He calls to the spirits, saying that he no longer needs them. He says his days will be spent ridding the world of the Leviathans. He prepares to smash the box with his cane when it opens on its own, revealing a bat inside. The bat bites him on the neck.

Jeb stands over Barnabas, unconscious with two bite marks on his neck. He tells Barnabas that he was warned, and calls him a traitor. He says he's doomed to a life of eternal darkness. He takes the Leviathan box and calls to his parental spirits. He says he knows he did what he did without their permission, but now the Leviathans will live on. He leaves, and Barnabas rises. He feels his neck and cries out in anguish.

Quentin sees Jeb return to the antique shop with the Leviathan box. He grabs Jeb and asks him where Barnabas is. He sees the box in Jeb's hands and asks if he's killed him. Quentin demands that he tell him where Barnabas is. He takes off his coat and the two men fight. Jeb pulls a knife on him and tells him to let him go, unless he wants his friend to find his body there. He says they'll meet again, and he goes into the shop.

Julia says that if Jeb told Quentin that his friend would find his body, that must mean Barnabas is still alive. She says she knows what Jeb has done. Quentin asks if that means he's a vampire? She cries. Quentin tells her that they've got to find him. She asks if he knew where Barnabas was going to destroy the box. He said he assumed it would be someplace special to the Leviathans. She says he saw an altar in the woods... that must be where he is.

Barnabas stands outside of Collinwood, looking up at Maggie's window. He realizes that he must have blood, and Maggie will at last be his.

He starts inside, and wonders if he can harm Maggie. He realizes that he must not, and leaves.

Barnabas sits before a full glass of wine at The Blue Whale. A stranger comes in asking where the antique shop is. Barnabas suggests that she go to the Collinsport Inn, which is nearby... He says, "The Naga," and she asks if he knows it, and he says he knows the Todd's and Jeb Hawkes. She asks what he's like. He invites her to join him for a glass of wine, since they have a lot in common, and she does. She asks if he's one of theme, and he introduces himself. She says she is Nelle Gunston from Virginia. She asks what Jeb is like, and he says she'll find out soon enough. She says she met a man named Bruno who told her all about it, and gave her the Naga necklace. Julia and Quentin arrive. They say they were worried about him. He introduces them to Nelle, and says he's busy right now.

Quentin gets Julia a drink. She asks Quentin if he saw the Naga necklace on Nelle. Quentin says Barnabas looks different.

Nelle tells Barnabas to take her to the shop. He says that Jeb's not there, but he knows where he is, and he will take her to him. They leave together.

As they watch him leave, Julia asks Quentin what could have happened to Barnabas.

Barnabas brings Nelle to the old house. She asks where Jeb is, and he says that he must be late. She points out that he doesn't wear any Leviathan signs. He tells her that he brought the box, and doesn't need to prove anything. He tells her that she's very attractive. She says she doesn't believe Jeb is coming. He asks her what Bruno told her to convince her to join them. He asks her how Bruno became one. She tells him to ask Bruno. He says he's asking her, and she says a Mr. Strak brought him in. She asks for a drink. He asks for her forgiveness for asking so many questions. She says a lot of people want to know, including the wrong people. As he fixes her drink, she pulls a knife and threatens to stab him. He turns and tells her to drop it. She does. He says he's not one of them, and says he'll show her what he is. He bares his fangs. She backs away but he grabs her. She says they'll get him for his, and he bites her neck.

Julia and Barnabas arrive at the old house to find him standing over the woman from the bar's dead body. He says he had to do it. Julia says she's been strangled. Barnabas says she came to join the Leviathans. Quentin says they have to remove the body, and asks what Jeb did to him. Julia reveals a wound on the woman's neck, and Barnabas tells them that they found out he was a traitor and punished him.

Julia says they can start the treatment right away. Barnabas says he will go to Jeb tonight, and ensure that he never changes again. He leaves, and Julia says Quentin needs to bury the woman in the woods. He says he'd prefer to bring her body to the antique shop to find her there. She says that will lead the authorities to Barnabas. She says they will have to protect him, as the Leviathans will come to kill him during the day. She says she'll have to get Willie Loomis to protect him. She says Jeb will learn he made the biggest mistake of his life tonight.

Jeb is on the phone with Megan, who is at the police station to see Philip. He hangs up and takes the Leviathan box upstairs. Barnabas lurks outside the antique shop.

Jeb goes into his room and locks the door. The labored breathing can be heard behind the door.

Barnabas enters the antique shop and goes upstairs. Outside the door, he hears the breathing. He goes downstairs and throws gasoline throughout the shop. He takes a match and lights the room on fire. He leaves the antique shop engulfed in flames.

Our thoughts

John: Why didn't Quentin follow Jeb inside to continue the fight? Was he really afraid that Jeb might cut him? He seemed so ready to throw down when he removed his coat. It sounded like the Leviathan box was getting kicked around during their scuffle—it would have been funny if they had fallen on it and broken it!

Christine: He probably realized at that point that it was more important to make sure Barnabas was safe than to claim the title of alpha male.

John: It's been a while since a red-shirt was introduced in the show. I'm surprised they gave Nelle a first AND last name, when she just as easily could have been labeled 'vampire snack' in the script.

Christine: You are forgetting investigator Lawrence Guthrie, who showed up just last week only to be quickly dispatched by Jeb in Leviathan form. Barnabas proves that Jeb made a mistake in making him a vampire as he takes out the first in what could be a long line of Leviathan supporters willing to kill for the cause.

John: They really went overboard on the make-up so it was clear Barnabas was in full-on vampire mode today. Of course, despite their having made the connection of what Jeb had done to him, when they found him in The Blue Whale, they seemed to have forgotten. Quentin points out that he looks different, but that's it. And then when they find him over the dead woman's body in the old house, Julia's first diagnosis was death by strangling. Really? How does one forget that a friend has a nasty history of vampirism?

Christine: I think they were reluctant to believe that the worst had happened. Great to see Bartender Bob Rooney return to tend bar at the Blue Whale for one last appearance today. Too bad he wasn't able to get the juke box to play some of those familiar Bob Cobert Blue Whale tunes to bring back fond memories of the early days on Dark Shadows. It sounds like Willie Loomis will be returning to his old job as vampire servant to Barnabas. If only they could get Vicki to come back, it would be like old times again.

Angelique watches Quentin transform to a werewolf, as Victor watches through the window. He gets up, no severed hand on his chest. He walks out the front door. Victor says he must get the Hand, and enters the house. He looks around for it, but the Hand and the box are missing.

Angelique looks out the window of Collinwood, listening to a wolf howl in the distance. Victor returns to Collinwood and asks her if Edward is there. She says he might be in his study. He flatters her, and tells her that he will be staying at Collinwood for a week or two before leaving to explore the rest of the country. He asks if she's related to the family. She says that she was engaged to a family member, but it didn't work out. She says she is a guest like he is.

He asks her about her ancestors from Martinique, and asks if she has ever been there. She says that she never has. He asks her about the people there and their use of black and white magic. She says that interests her, but she has no direct knowledge of it. He tells her that he needs to return to the Collinsport Inn to get a gift for Edward that he left there. Angelique hears a strange warbling sound. She looks at the portrait of Barnabas, smiles, and leaves Collinwood.

Aristede is in The Blue Whale when Victor arrives. Aristede asks if he got the Hand. Victor says he can almost forgive Aristede s blunder, considering Angelique's beauty. Aristede smiles, and Victor reiterates, "almost." He explains that Angelique may be a formidable enemy, or a most valuable friend. Aristede says someone who attempts to kill him isn't a friend, and if he sees her again, he'll kill her. Victor says that he doubts that. He says he's convinced she has supernatural powers. Aristede asks Victor to let him try to get the Hand from her. Victor says it will take planning, and they must stay longer than planned. He adds that their forged letter convinced Edward Collins. Aristede must stay in the village, as no one must know of their relationship.

A woman enters and Victor is frightened. He says she's a gypsy. He leaves, and tells Aristede to meet him outside of Collinwood. Aristede introduces himself to the gypsy as she drinks at the bar. He tells her that she's beautiful. She asks if he knows Magda, and if so where she can find her. He says he can. He asks her name. She says she's Julianka. He offers to take her to Magda after they've had a drink together.

Angelique comes to see Barnabas. She asks if he's willing to admit that she was right, and his mission in this century is impossible. He asks if she has agreed to help Quentin, and she says that she has. She tells Barnabas that she got the Hand, and tried to use it. She says that Quentin underwent another transformation, and the Hand didn't work. He calls her a fool, and she says she'll try again.

He asks why she's trying to help and she says that Quentin has agreed to marry her. He tells her not to meddle in history, as it will impact lives in the future. She asks Barnabas what he's been doing since he's traveled back in time. He accuses her of doing it out of spite. She says bored with him, and she's sick of waiting. She storms out.

Aristede and Julianka are walking through the woods. He points out the old house, and tells her that's where Magda is living. She thanks him, and he says that she could repay him by joining him at The Blue Whale after she's done. He moves in on her and she pulls a knife. She tells him that he may see her again.

Julianka enters the old house. Barnabas asks who she is and what she wants. She asks him to come out of the shadows. She says she's looking for Magda. He asks why. She says that she was told she put a curse on someone in Collinwood, and she has come to end the curse. Barnabas asks if she can end the curse on Quentin. She says she can. She asks who he is, and he tells her. She says Sandor spoke of him.

Barnabas asks how she proposes to end the curse. She says she cannot tell. She says her great grandmother put the curse on Count Petofi. She says that she passed the secret of the curse down to her grandmother, who passed it on to her mother, who passed it on to her. She asks if Barnabas wants to know her price for providing the cure. She says that Magda stole something from King Johnny Romano's tribe. Barnabas says that neither he nor Magda have the Hand, though he knows who does. She tells him that Quentin's curse will go on if she doesn't have the Hand in 24 hours. He tells her to wait as he leaves, she reminds him that there will be no cure without the Hand.

Aristede stands in the woods, smoking. He hears a rustling, and is attacked by the werewolf. He screams, but the wolf pauses when Victor appears. He tells Aristede to run, and he approaches the werewolf. He tells him that he may not understand him now, but he will when the time comes. Victor tells the werewolf to do exactly what he tells him to do.

Our thoughts

John: Do you think the Hand of Petofi had the day off today? Or did someone misplace the prop?

Christine: Perhaps someone took it home to play pranks and didn't realize it needed to be back on set for the filming of today's episode. So, is the werewolf calm around Victor because he also has a furry face?

John: A cute little gypsy comes to town, and already the new kid is putting moves on her. I only wish that when she pulled the knife, she had a story like the one he told Quentin about the dancing girl...

Christine: When Angelique told Barnabas she was getting a husband for helping Quentin, I expected him to say he had no intention of marrying her, not yet knowing that she has finally decided to move on from her obsession over him. I wonder if he may be a tad bit jealous.

John: Do you think Barnabas is aware that Quentin's got a bad case of mangled-face? The last time he saw him was before Magda tried to de-curse him with the hand, right?

Christine: Barnabas last appeared in Episode 787 when Quentin was in jail but had not yet experienced the delightfully disfiguring effects of the Hand, though I think we can assume Magda filled him in. Our long lost pal, Bartender Bob Rooney, who last served drinks at the Blue Whale in Episode 358, made a mute appearance in today's episode, gesturing to the drink he'd just served Aristede after he ordered another, prompting Aristede to explain it was for someone else.

Dark Shadows Episode 358 - 11/8/67

Carolyn goes to Barnabas to tell him she saw Julia's notebook. He asks if she recovered it, and Carolyn explains that a lawyer who was visiting her uncle took Julia into town. He angrily asks if she let Hoffman tell a lawyer about him. She said they were alone together on the ride to his office. She describes how she went into his office after Julia left, and she saw him put the notebook in his safe.

Barnabas tells her they are going to drive to the lawyer's office. He realizes that it's almost dawn, and he sends Carolyn to get the notebook. She says she can't break into the safe. Barnabas asks if the lawyer is attractive, and tells Carolyn that she will do what she must do. Barnabas then says he has an alternative solution for Dr. Hoffman. He'll discredit her as being insane. He pulls out a syringe and shows it to Carolyn. He says Hoffman saw it in the doctor's body and will remember it well.

Carolyn and Peterson have a drink at The Blue Whale. She tries to flirt with him, and he asks why she's tracked him down twice. She gets him to admit she's pretty, but he doesn't fall to her whims. He offers to buy her dinner, but she declines. He asks if she'd be interested in him if Julia Hoffman wasn't his client. She tells him to call her later.

In Collinwood, Carolyn comes downstairs as Julia returns home. She tells Julia that she should have let her drive her to town, and that nothing will stop Barnabas.

In her room, Julia sees a syringe on a table and says that it can't be the one used to kill Woodard, as she burned it. She then realizes that it is the one, and wonders how it got there. At first she suspects Dave Woodard, despite his being dead. She realizes that it would have to be Barnabas, and that Carolyn must have put it in her room. She grabs it and leaves her room.

Peterson calls Carolyn, and once again invites her to dinner. Julia comes downstairs, grabs the phone from her and hangs it up. She shows her the syringe and tells her that she knows Barnabas made her put it in her room. Carolyn asks her why it upsets her so. Julia is obviously distraught.

Carolyn goes to see Barnabas, who says he is performing a ritual, or experiment as she might call it. Carolyn tells him that Julia was very upset. Barnabas tells Carolyn about secrets he learned from an Indian in Barbados. He says he learned the secret magic number of the universe. Carolyn thinks he's teasing her. He says he gained the power to plant a germ in someone's mind, and watch the disease spread. He tells Carolyn that she will no longer doubt magic. He performs an incantation as she watches, confused. She gasps as he disappears.

Julia lies in bed, tossing and turning. She hears something and sits up. She sees a figure in the shadows. Dave Woodard's voice asks why she killed him, and tells her that he'll never let her forget. She collapses on her bed, the figure disappears, and outside her window a bat flaps his wings.

John: So Barnabas saved the syringe used to kill Dr. Woodard? As a souvenir? Funny how he casually mentions it to Carolyn, and she doesn't bat an eye (no pun intended)

Christine: He must have suspected he'd need it in case she decided to turn against him for forcing her to help him kill Woodard.

John: Um, did we miss something here? When we last saw Carolyn and Peterson, he was grilling her in his office. Now they're on a date at The Blue Whale? I wonder what Carolyn told him to put his mind at ease...

Christine: He did say that she'd seen him 3 times in the last 18 hours, so it seems we missed out on her second visit to Peterson at the courthouse. He remembered her first bikini, so she probably didn't have to work too hard to get him to spend his hard earned cash buying her drinks at the local pub. 

John: That voice at the end sounded like it could have been the original Doctor Woodard (even if it was a just a conjuring trick by Barnabas). Probably not our original actor, or they would have shown him outside of a silhouette. Makes me long for the days of Bill Malloy's ghostly figure showing up in Collinwood.

Christine: It is Peter Turgeon's voice speaking for Woodard, but the silhouette belongs to good ol' Peter Murphy, who was last seen playing Barnabas' elderly head in Episode 348. It's a mystery why they used Turgeon's voice but not his body. Bill Malloy's ghost really knew how to cut a frightening figure. He was not one to hide in the shadows.

Dark Shadows Episode 349 - 10/26/67

Barnabas asks Julia why she screamed, not realizing that the experiment failed. She says the dosage he requested was too powerful. He touches his face and realizes his face aged as his hands had.

He asks if this is her revenge for not letting their relationship become what she hoped it would be. She blames him for expediting the experiment. She says she may be able to counteract it with time. He says he doesn't have time. He's now closer to death than ever before. She says she can help him, and he tells her he no longer needs her. He tells her he must save himself. She asks if he means reverting, and he says yes. She says that if he goes on destroying, she'll be partially responsible each time. He tells her to go to the main house, and as Julia opens the door, he asks her to tell Vicki that he has to leave town and won't be back for a while.

Vicki walks in and says he can tell her himself. Barnabas hides behind a chair, and says he's not feeling well and doesn't want to expose her. She asks him if he should be going on a business trip if he's not feeling well. He snaps back that it isn't serious. He bids her goodnight, and she leaves.

Barnabas says he must act before anyone sees him this way. Barnabas says he'll never forgive Julia. She says Vicki could still be his. She suggests that he use Vicki as the instrument of his reverting. He says she must come to him of her own choosing. She tells him he should get her in any way he can.

Back in her room, Vicki starts to lie down when Carolyn comes in to tell her she's going to meet Joe at The Blue Whale, and she wanted Vicki to be there for David. Carolyn asks where Barnabas is, as he was supposed to come back with Vicki to look at the West Wing. She says he was sick, and going away for a few days on business. She says she's going to miss him while he's gone. Vicki says she's come to rely on Barnabas.

Julia tells Barnabas that Vicki's blood can be his, and he tells her to stop it. She says Vicki may never come to him of her own free will, and that if he wants her, he should get her tonight.

At The Blue Whale, Carolyn tells Joe that she saw Sarah. She says the other things David has said may be true. Joe says that Burke and Dr. Woodard proved there was no coffin in the basement of the old house. Carolyn says the things David said sound far fetched, but so did the stories of Sarah. She asks Joe to come with her to Eagle Hill cemetery to see if they can find the secret room. She says there may be a connection with Barnabas. Joe tells her to forget the whole thing. He asks if she believes there's anything sinister about Barnabas.

Back at Collinwood, Carolyn tells Vicki that she's having doubts about Barnabas, based on what David has been saying. Vicki says the things David says about Barnabas aren't true.

Barnabas paces in front of his portrait in the old house. He considers what Julia said about getting Vicki, and leaves the old house.

In her room, Vicki sleeps when a bat appears outside her window. Old Barnabas appears in her room, and approaches Vicki in her bed.

Carolyn calls to Vicki and enters her room. Vicki wakes up and asks her what she wants. Carolyn says she thought she heard something. She turns and outside the window, they see the giant bat flapping.

John: You'd think Barnabas might be aware that his face had shriveled up like an old codger.

Christine: That is some pretty effective make up to still look so good close up. I suppose it should have occurred to everyone involved that restoring Barnabas to human form might also reinstate his real age to his body.

John: Having Vicki walk in on Barnabas and Julia was one of the best shocks in the show's history. Of course, poor, naive Vicki doesn't catch on to Barnabas' ruse.

Christine: Shouldn't Vicki still be feeling uneasy about Barnabas after seeing him in his coffin while in a hypnotic state? I would think she would avoid romantic sunrise encounters and would not argue against the validity of David's suspicions about him. Julia's infatuation has caused her to become quite diabolical in suggesting Barnabas partake of Vicki's vital fluids to simultaneously restore himself and bring her under his power. I wonder why he doesn't just use Julia to rejuvenate himself. Perhaps he wants to avoid an intimate encounter with her.

John: The squeaky bat sound doesn't do much to make the cheesy bat puppet seem any more realistic.

Christine: Yes, the squeaky marker on a board sound effect does diminish the bat's fear factor. I don't think that shadow bat is Bil Baird's puppet bat though, since it's not credited. Joe and Carolyn's scene at the Blue Whale took me back to Episode 2 when Carolyn was shaking her groove thing to the same tune (Cue 73: Med. Slow Blue Whale) as Joe sat at a table by himself looking miserable.
