Dark Shadows Episode 1177 12/29/70

Julia continues to search Quentin's lab when she hears footsteps. She realizes that someone's coming down the stairs. She sees Professor Stokes, and smiles. He comes downstairs and says he's half as amazed as she was. He says what he read in Flora's journal must be true. Julia asks where he found it. He says it was in the ruins of Collinwood. He read that Barnabas disappeared, and his body was never found. He asks how long Barnabas has been missing, and she says it's been a week. He says they must change the course of history and find him. She asks how he knew about the staircase, and Stokes explains that Barnabas told him about it. He says he was waiting in the playroom for 36 hours when the doorway appeared. She says he hopes he doesn't regret it, and he says it's an adventure. He asks if Gerard is there, and she says he's the master of Collinwood. She explains that Quentin and Desmond have been accused of being warlocks, and they believe Gerard is responsible. She says she'll introduce him as a professor friend from Pennsylvania. She'll say he hasn't met Barnabas, but has corresponded with him, and came due to an old invitation from him. He asks if Gerard suspects her and Barnabas, and she says that he does. 

Gerard calls from outside, demanding that she unlock the door. She does, and he asks if she's alone. She says she was reading aloud. He looks around, and asks if she's sure no one else is there. He pulls back the curtain, revealing the staircase. No one is there. She says she was ensuring there was no more incriminating evidence against Quentin or Desmond. He asks why she locked the door, and she explains that she didn't want to be disturbed. They head upstairs together. 

Gerard asks Julia if she'll see Quentin today. She says she may not have time. She tells Gerard that she just got a letter, and a friend is arriving from Pennsylvania. Professor Stokes. He asks if he's related to Carrie, and she says he is Ben Stokes' nephew. Gerard says he's surprised he didn't come to Ben's funeral. He goes to tell the servants to prepare Ben's room as Angelique comes in. They go into the drawing room, and Julia tells her a friend has arrived from 1970 to help them. He points out that in the future, he introduced Angelique to Collinwood. Julia says that he won't understand how they're married, and make up a story about Angelique traveling through time because she has an obsession about Barnabas. 

Stokes wonders about the obsession about Barnabas. He says he's afraid of doing the wrong thing, or saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. He says seeing Gerard in Quentin's lab made him feel quite vulnerable. She says that when she arrived in 1840, Ben Stokes helped her like she's now helping him. Stokes asks if Daphne came with Gerard, and Julia goes into great detail about Quentin's wife Samantha being in love with Gerard, and their getting married on the day that Quentin and Tad showed up after having been thought lost at sea. She then describes all of the twists and turns in Collinwood soap opera history circa 1840. She says they may have been wrong to blame everything on Gerard. He asks who is to blame, and she says Judah Zachery. She's surprised to see that Stokes recognizes the warlock's name. He reminds her that occult history is his academic specialty. He says he was beheaded, and his severed head had strange powers. Julia says Desmond found it, and it possessed him, then Leticia, then her. She says Quentin is accused of being possessed by it, though she's sure Gerard is. He asks what evidence the state has against Quentin. Julia lists the circumstantial evidence, including the series of dead bodies he was discovered with. Stokes asks what Barnabas' involvement is. Julia says Gerard and Trask are trying to involve him, and Barnabas disappeared when he was going to testify on Quentin's behalf. Julia tells him how to plan his arrival at Collinwood. Stokes asks about Daphne, and Julia says she's in love with Quentin, not Gerard. 

Julia is sleeping in the drawing room when she dreams that she's hearing Roxanne's voice. She gets up and sees her ghost, telling her that Barnabas is dying, and she must follow her. Julia does. Outside of a brick building, Roxanne tells Julia to hurry, and then Angelique wakes her. Julia says she was taking her to Barnabas, and Angelique has ruined it! Angelique says it's a sign, if she said he's alive. She asks if they know the place. Julia says Stokes will be there any moment, and Angelique asks her which is more important. Julia agrees that Barnabas is, and they leave together. 

Stokes arrives at Collinwood, and Gerard lets him in. Gerard introduces himself, and asks if his journey from Baltimore was successful. Stokes corrects him, saying Philadelphia. Gerard says he's surprised he didn't ask for Barnabas. Stokes asks if he's there, saying he looks forward to meeting him. Gerard explains that Barnabas is missing, and there may be foul play involved. He asks Stokes if he can tell him about Julia.

Julia and Angelique arrive in at the location from her dream. She says this is the room Roxanne led her to, and she knows Barnabas is here somewhere. She calls for Roxanne to help. Angelique joins her in calling, and says they will wait. 

Downstairs in the basement of Trask's Memorial Chapel, Roxanne waits outside the brick wall wondering why Julia hasn't come, when he has so little time.

Our thoughts: 

John: Eliot Stokes steps right out of the Disco in Saturday Night Fever into 1840! What impeccable timing to arrive while Julia happens to be in Quentin's lab!

 

Christine: Thank goodness he wasn't wearing the platform shoes and Angels Flight pants I was expecting! I can't help but wonder how he would know Barnabas if, according to what he read in Flora's journal, Barnabas disappeared and was never heard from again. Wouldn't that mean that they never had the chance to meet? 

 

John: Here we go again. At her first opportunity, Julia starts making up stories about Stokes, giving Gerard plenty of ammunition to use against him. And while I loved Julia's ridiculously detailed explanation about everything going on in 1840, it becomes quite clear to viewers how little any of it makes sense. Stokes is dead-on when he describes it as a complicated crossword puzzle.

 
Christine: That was a nice little recap for those just tuning in and wondering what the heck is going on, though it would seem unnecessary. Isn't it just us die-hard fans left watching at this point? 

John: Roxanne is one lazy ghost. She'll come to Julia in a dream, but not bother to step outside to drag her downstairs to where Barnabas is bricked in. Of course, I can't wait to see how a ghost, a witch, and a 1970s doctor are going to break down a brick wall!

 

Christine: Maybe Roxanne has a little bit of an attitude after Angelique poked her doll, resurrecting the vampire curse on her, and then fed Julia to her, though I guess she wouldn't take that out on Barnabas. Perhaps the fog obscured her ghostly vision and kept her from knowing where they were.

Dark Shadows Episode 1164 12/10/70

Leticia starts the seance. She calls for Roxanne to come to them. The doors swing open, and they hear Roxanne's voice. She appears as a ghost. She says she has no rest. Leticia asks if she'll tell them who made her a vampire, and she says yes. Barnabas is mildly alarmed. She says, "Angelique," and Leticia passed out. Flora points out that Barnabas recognized the name, and he says his mother's name was Angelique. He says she was an unusual woman, a free spirit. He says she traveled back and forth between Collinsport and England. He excuses himself and runs off. Flora tells Leticia that she doesn't believe him. She points out that Trask doesn't trust Barnabas, and she doesn't trust his explanation. Barnabas eavesdrops on the remainder of their conversation from just outside the room.

Barnabas returns to Collinwood and tells Angelique that Roxanne has identified her. He says Leticia held a seance, and Roxanne's spirit named Angelique as making her a vampire. He reminds her that Angelique was the wife of Barnabas Collins in 1797. Angelique asks if love brought him to her, or if he's afraid that if she's discovered, he will be, too. Barnabas says that she could save Quentin from his trial, and she says that Quentin is guilty, and the sooner he is dead, the better for all of them. Barnabas says he will go to the gates of hell to understand the evil inside her. She says he may have to do just that. 

Gerard comes to Rose Cottage to see Flora. He asks her to spend more time at Collinwood. He says he need friends, since Samantha and Gabriel are anything but. He names her the official hostess of Collinwood. She asks him if he has seen the journal of Judah Zachery. He says he has not. Flora leaves to look for it as Leticia arrives and looks at Gerard suspiciously. He asks if something's wrong, and she says he knows better than she. She asks if he had anything to do with all the changes, and he says he was surprised, too. She points out that murders and attacks led up to the changes. She says she was chased home by villagers and called a witch. She says that they both know Quentin is not a warlock, and she asks Gerard if he is. He tells her that she's a dreamer. She asks him what he really wants, and he tells her that he wants her. He asks her to come to him, and she does. He flirts with her before bidding her goodnight. Flora returns and asks if Leticia thinks it's strange for the journal to disappear. Leticia tells Flora that Gerard is very different, and it frightens her. 

Gerard finds Daphne in the drawing room. She gets up to leave, and he reiterates that he wants Quentin to come back. She says that they both know Quentin is innocent, but the villagers don't. He says he will make them know. He takes her into his arms, and she says that he's trying to take her from Quentin, and it can't be done. He asks if she's taking his marriage to Samantha lightly. She says that they love each other, and asks Gerard to leave her alone. She walks out, and he takes out his Devil sigil. He says that in her dreams she will see how quickly hate is turned to love.

Daphne lies down on her bed and dreams. She sees her wedding to Gerard, and then the two of them making out on a bed. She tells him how much she loves him, and asks him to never leave her. She says she couldn't leave him if she wanted to. She wakes up calling Gerard's name. 

Gerard puts his Devil sigil away as Valerie returns to Collinwood. She asks to borrow the journal he mentioned to her; the journal by Judah somebody. He says that he doesn't have it. He says it belongs to Desmond and he appears to have misplaced it. She asks Gerard what Quentin was like on their sea voyage. He says Quentin was engaged in voodoo and witchcraft, and he says he was not engaged, but interested, as he also was. She asks about the ring with the Devil's mark. He says he was attracted to it, but not for the powers. He asks why she's asking so many questions, and she says that Quentin has changed. 

Daphne comes in, and Valerie excuses herself. Gerard invites Daphne to accompany him to the jail to see Quentin. She says she cannot leave Tad. Gerard asks for her help convincing people that he only took the position to help Quentin. She says that they don't ate him. He thanks her for comforting him. He says he needs her badly and leans in to kiss her, stopping at the last minute and telling her he has to leave. She's shocked that she almost kissed him. She sees another letter from Joanna. She reads it, and it says she is coming for her now, and doesn't want her to be afraid. She calls to Joanna, and begs her not to hurt her. The front doors of Collinwood swing open. Daphne goes to them and shuts them. 

Back in the house, she finds Joanna's cape on the floor. She asks why she's doing this, and asks for her help to have the love that she once had. She begs for her sister's help, and when the doorway at the top of the stairs opens, she runs into the drawing room.

Our thoughts: 

John: Funny how Barnabas had to basically own up to his mother being Angelique. But you think he would learn by now not to make up stories on the fly. Surely there's no record of her 'going back and forth to England.' If anything, he's all but implicated himself as the son of a vampire (which in and of itself might seem to make him a prime suspect). I assume everyone has forgotten the coincidence of his looking exactly like his ancestor's portrait?

 

Christine: Where is Julia when he needs her? His devotion to her must come from her ability to keep him out of this sort of trouble, being the brains of the operation and all. 

 

John: I sure hope Leticia is playing Gerard, and not getting swept up by his charms again. But then, Gerard is playing all of the ladies, so it may be out of her control.

 
Christine: She may or may not be playing him, but despite his charm, she still seems to be aware that he is not what he seems. I have to wonder about Gerardudah, who seems oddly obsessed with foisting wedding night fantasies about him on Daphne. It's rather an odd thing to do for someone who is supposed to be evil incarnate. 

John: I have to admit I'm not particularly impressed with the Joanna's mystery-notes storyline. Perhaps she'll be the one to sweep in and save Quentin from being beheaded, and if so I hope she does it soon, because the random vague notes are getting rather annoying.

Christine: Joanna definitely needs to step up her game. The notes are tiresome and the discarded cape was not very impressive. Do some howling, make the portraits bleed, or cause some eyeballs to explode. Go big or go home, Joanna!

Dark Shadows Episode 1150 11/20/70

At dawn, Roxanne returns to the crypt. Randall holds up the cross and she begs him to put it away. She says she must get to the coffin. He says that preventing her is the only way she can find peace. She begs him to let her live, and he refuses. He says it's the only thing he can do. She says she's not responsible for what she's become. He asks her who is responsible. She pleads with him for mercy, as his own sister. He slowly lowers the cross. She turns on him, and he raises it again, saying that she's not Roxanne. The sun rises and she screams as the room is bathed in sunlight. Roxanne calls for Barnabas to save her. She burns up in the sunlight. 

Julia wakes, feeling better, realizing that Roxanne is dead. 

Randall places the cross on the stain left behind by Roxanne's remains.

Daphne re-reads the note from her sister. Quentin comes in and tells her that Julia is at Rose Cottage, the victim of another attack. He invites her to come with him to get her. She says she thinks Joanna's spirit is restless, and will remain that way as long as she stays in the house. He asks if she wants to leave him, and she says no, that she only just found him. They hug. He tells her to wait until he gets back from Rose Cottage, and they'll try to settle things then. She asks if there will ever be an answer for the two of them, and he kisses her.

Randall arrives at the old house, looking for Barnabas. Trask hears him and calls to him from the basement. He begs Randall to let him out. Randall explains that Trask is no longer under Roxanne's control, as he destroyed her. Trask says they need to discover who is responsible. Randall can't understand why Barnabas locked Trask in the cellar, and offers to go to Collinwood in search of a key. 

In the basement, Trask hears chains. He asks who's there, and no one answers. Trask goes to the bricked up wall and listens. It seems to be where the sounds are coming from. 

Quentin helps Julia into the drawing room. He asks her how she accounts for her incredible recovery. Randall arrives, and asks her if she knows that it's all over. She nods. Quentin asks what he means, and asks what's going on. Randall tells him that Julia was attacked by a vampire — Roxanne. At dawn, he prevented her from reaching her coffin until the daylight destroyed her. Quentin says someone has to be responsible for making Roxanne a vampire. Randall says they're still at large. He asks Julia if she knows where Barnabas is. He says Barnabas locked Trask in the cellar at the old house, but then he left him there all day. He doesn't understand why Barnabas didn't stay with him. Julia says she has keys, and offers to go with them. Quentin asks who else knows about Roxanne. He says just Flora and Trask. Quentin says he doesn't want Samantha to know.

Trask continues to listen at the brick wall. He assumes he's imagining it, and then decides he's in control of his faculties. He demands to know who is behind the wall. 

Quentin tells Daphne that Julia doesn't know who attacked her. He tries to fondle Daphne's head, and she pulls away. She says they'll only have peace if she leaves Collinwood. He says he'll follow her if she leaves. He tells her that his place is with her. She tells him it's wrong for her to stay. He says Joanna didn't write those notes. He says it's possible that Joanna can help. He tells her they'll conduct a seance!

Randall comes into the basement and apologizes to Trask for taking so long. He asks him if something is wrong, and Trask tells him there is someone behind the brick wall. Julia tells him the wall is part of the house's construction. Julia says she doesn't hear anything, and Trask says that he doesn't right now, either. He asks her if there's a reason she doesn't want him to see what's behind that wall, and asks if she knows what's behind the wall. 

Randall tells Julia that Barnabas has a lot of questions to answer. He says he knows more about vampires than he is letting on. He knew how to find her, and what to do to put her to rest. Julia says that following that logic, a man who put out a fire is guilty because he knew how to put it out. Randall adds that Roxanne cried out for Barnabas, saying he was the only one who could help right before she died. Julia reminds him that they loved one another. Trask says he knew Barnabas was involved from the night she was stricken. Randall says Julia's explanation may be valid, but he will not be satisfied until he gets answers from Barnabas.

Daphne and Quentin prepare for the seance. She is reluctant, but sits down at the table. He explains the process, and holds her hands. He begins the ritual, and calls for Joanna to communicate through one of them. He asks her to appear to them, or give them a sign. Lightning flashes outside. Quentin asks her to appear to them and speak. The drawing room doors swing open, and a figure stands in the shadows.

Our thoughts: 

John: I was really kind of hoping for an onscreen disintegration effect when Roxanne died, but other than bright lights, we got nothing. Not even a skeleton in a dress lying on the crypt floor.

 

Christine: I am wondering if someone forgot to lay out the skeleton. The zoom to the floor was confusing since it had me expecting to see some king of vampire residue. Is that lame stain on the floor truly all that's left of her or are those bits of debris between the stones remnants of her disintegrated corpse? Also, does the demise of Roxanne indicate a change in future events at Collinwood? I have to say I'm impressed with Randall. I didn't think he was up to the task. 

 

John: I love how Randall, Quentin and Julia have drinks while discussing the vampire activity in Collinsport. Meanwhile, Trask still locked in the cellar of the old house!

 

Christine: That Randall guy is really starting to grow on me. Of course, if he didn't let Trask cool his jets in the cellar, Trask wouldn't have heard his daddy rattling his chains at him. 

John: Do you think the second Quentin and Daphne scene was presented out of sequence? I guess he could be avoiding telling her that he knew who Julia's attacker was, even though he could add that she's no longer a threat. And who would have thought it would be time to break out the seance tracker! I like how rather than just touching fingers, Quentin got to hold Daphne's hands. Of course the seance tracker should make it handy to figure out just how many times the seance ends with the drawing room doors swinging open to reveal a figure standing in the shadows!

 

Christine: It's a classic Dark Shadows séance finale! It would be totally awesome if it turned out to be Laura Collins, in homage to Collinwood's first séance.

Barnabas arrives at the lighthouse and finds Julia unconscious. He manages to wake her when he sees Roxanne, who says Julia must remain here. Barnabas says he wanted to spare her this existence. He says that there's nothing she can do to stop him. Roxanne says Julia responds to his will. He tells Roxanne to look at him. She turns away, and says he'll be sorry that he interfered. She leaves, and Barnabas helps Julia up.

Flora tells Randall that she hopes he'll stay in Collinsport. Trask arrives to speak to Gerard. Flora explains that he's at Collinwood. Trask says he hopes Gerard isn't becoming emotionally involved with anyone there. Flora asks what he means, and he says an insidious evil has crept into the house, and he is not at liberty to divulge its nature. Randall asks him why he bothers to bring it up if he's not at liberty to divulge it. Trask says the almighty will deal with Randall's blindness, and Randall says he will have his hands full dealing with Trask's. Randall tells Flora that Trask believes Collinwood if full of witches and evil spirits. Trask says Quentin is in league with the devil, and Randall says he's had enough of his nonsense. 

Trask says Randall may be content to merely accept Roxanne's death, but he intends to prove that she was murdered by an act of sorcery. Flora says he must be mistaken about Quentin. Trask tells Flora that she will soon believe him, as he has confidence in her judgement and faith. He says he cannot say the same for Randall. He bids them goodnight and leaves. Randall tells Flora that Trask has a warped mind. He says there may be a reason behind all of the tragedy, but he doesn't think it has anything to do with the supernatural. 

Trask is in the woods when he hears someone. He tells them to come out. Roxanne appears before him. He can't believe it. She tells him he was right — there is life after death. She tells him not to be afraid, and reminds him that he loves her. She commands that he look into her eyes. He begs her not to come closer as she approaches him with fangs bared.

Randall thanks Flora for dinner, and then prepares to leave. They hear the door open and Barnabas calling. They find him with Julia, who he explains he found in the abandoned lighthouse. Flora sees the wound on her neck, and Barnabas tells her to take Julia upstairs and find a cross, while he goes to get a doctor.

Barnabas tells Randall that a doctor has stopped the bleeding. Randall asks if she'll be alright, and he says she will only if they manage to keep the person who attacked her away form her. Randall doesn't understand. Barnabas says there's no gentle way of telling him, and explains that Roxanne has risen from the grave and was the one who attacked Julia.

Roxanne points out that Trask is no longer afraid of her. He asks her to stay with him, or take him with her. She assures him that he'll see her again, soon. She will feel her summoning him, and will come to her. He tells her that he understands. 

Randall tells Barnabas that what he says is not possible. Barnabas doubles-down and says that Roxanne died as a result of an attack by a vampire, and is now one of the living dead. Randall says he could only accept it if he sees her with his own eyes. Barnabas tells him to come with him. 

Flora hears someone in the house, and finds Trask sitting in the dark. He says he was meditating. She asks if he's feeling alright, since he said he was going home. He says he's tired. She says that he's welcome to stay, and Gerard may even return while he's there. She adds that Barnabas found his sister, who was attacked in the woods just as Roxanne was. She says there may be something to what Trask said earlier about witchcraft. 

Barnabas and Randall return, and Flora says that she's well-read in the supernatural, and asks if Julia was attacked by a vampire. Randall confirms that she was. They tell her that the vampire who attacked Julia is Roxanne. She can't believe it. Randall says Barnabas showed him her coffin was empty.

Trask overhears them talking about Roxanne. They all come into the room and Barnabas asks Trask if something is wrong. Barnabas asks Trask if he was on his way home through the woods when he came back to Rose Cottage. He asks if he met anyone. Trask says he did not.

Roxanne calls to Trask, demanding that he come to her. 

Trask gets up and excuses himself. Barnabas asks him what's wrong. He says he's very tired, and Gerard is unlikely to be back. After he leaves, Randall says he's never seen Trask so subdued. Barnabas points out that he's obviously a victim of Roxanne. He says if they follow him, he can lead them to her. 

They follow Trask to the cemetery.

Trask enters a crypt as commanded by Roxanne. She hears someone and says they followed him. He closes he door and she disappears. Barnabas and Randall enter, and ask where she is. Barnabas realizes that she disappeared. He grabs Trask and tells him that he's not letting him out of his sight. Barnabas says that Randall must guard the crypt, and prevent Roxanne from getting into the coffin. He says he's going to take Trask back to the old house. Randall closes the crypt door after they leave. 

At dawn, Roxanne returns to the crypt. Randall holds up the cross and she begs him to put it away. She says she must get to the coffin. He says that preventing her is the only way she can achieve peace.

Our thoughts: 

John: Flora is so aloof compared to Elizabeth, and yet she's the first one to figure out that a vampire was responsible for the attacks!

Christine: Joan Bennett appeared genuinely startled when Trask sidled up behind her and barked at her. It's not surprising that Flora deduced a vampire was responsible. You know how well versed she is in the supernatural, after all.

 

 

John: I loved Roxanne's over-done ghoulie-vampire make-up... and her switchblade canine-teeth, that appear and disappear as soon as the camera cuts away. Pretty impressive for freshman vampire to have already mastered the disappearing trick. Makes one wonder why she couldn't just reappear within her coffin.

Christine: She is absolutely hideous! Considering that this goes against the trend of seductive female vampires in the 70s, it really had a terrifying effect. Of course, most frightening was the way she subdued Trask. 

John: Randall made a pretty quick switch from "denier of the supernatural" to "willing to believe that my dead sister is a vampire." I guess that just goes to show Barnabas will always be more convincing than any Trask. Of course, classic bumbling Barnabas move of leaving an apprentice Van Helsing to fend off the vampire alone, particularly when said vampire is his own sister! Couldn't he have had Randall take Trask to the old house? Methinks Barnie didn't want to be the one to have to dispatch his former love interest. He could have really used Julia's help... but he didn't get it, and she didn't even have the day off!

 

Christine: I had those same thoughts exactly, but then I realized Barnabas needed to be returning to his own coffin, so he couldn't really stick around to do the job. On the other hand, maybe he could have taken over her coffin. I wonder if there's some vampire rule against that sort of thing. That would have been an interesting turn of events for Roxanne to raise the coffin lid and find her ex-boyfriend squatting in her resting spot!
