Dark Shadows Episode 1147 11/17/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Quentin sneaks into the drawing room, and watches the door, waiting. After a while, Daphne opens the door with a note in her hand. Quentin demands that she give him the letter, and asks how she knows about Joanna. He grabs the note from her, and sees that it's addressed to Desmond. He apologizes and returns the letter. She says he's difficult to understand. He says he'd like to explain, but he can't.

He then finds a note on the table from Joanna. He wonders how it got there. It speaks of them being together soon, and his playing a song for her on the piano. He goes to the piano and plays. Samantha interrupts him with applause and says it's a lovely song. She asks what it is, and he stops playing and gets up for a drink.

They argue, and she says he demanded that she stay. He clarifies that he didn't demand that she stay — he told her that she couldn't leave with Tad. She tells him he should destroy his staircase. She asks if Trask found out. He says he will finish the staircase if only to send Trask to another century. She says that she doesn't believe Trask's claims that he killed Lorna. She stomps out and tells him that he can finish his song.

Daphne reads from her journal, about making him love her so he would appreciate the torment. Tad comes in and asks her who she hates. She asks what she's doing in her room, and asks what else he heard. She says her diary is personal. He points out that their minister says that hate is evil. He asks if the one she hates is in the house, and she says she's not going to discuss it with him. He says he's very good at finding things out.

Carrie complains about learning Latin. Daphne tells her it will help her learn other languages. As she practices saying love, Tad points out that Carrie loves Gerard. He and Carrie begin to argue. Samantha comes in and asks Daphne if this is how she encourages discipline. She tells the kids they will spend the rest of the afternoon at Rose Cottage. Carrie is excited, and Tad says he knows why, and adding that Gerard won't be there.

They leave, and Daphne explains they have more hours of schoolwork. Samantha explains that if she wanted them to have regular hours, she'd send him to school. She says she knows what's best for her son, and says she refuses to have him discipline or criticize her child anymore. She adds that Tad is not Daphne's whole life, but he is hers.

Tad tells Carrie that Gerard isn't in Rose Cottage, or their mother wouldn't be taking them there.

Quentin comes into Daphne's room. She asks him what's wrong. He says he came to apologize. She says she think he needs a friend, and so does she. He says she should have a room full of light and sun. She mentions that she has felt the strain of Samantha. She adds that Samantha hates her, having stopped classes today. She realizes that's her issue, and shouldn't complain. He asks her if she knows what it is to be without love. She says that she knows very little about love. Quentin asks if she has a secret love. She shakes her head. He says that he does, too, and they mustn't keep secrets. He leans in to kiss her. He says he now has something else to apologize for, but he won't. He says he feels very peaceful now. She kisses him.

He tells her that they have to trust each other, and kisses her again. He then says he's leaving Collinwood in about an hour to take care of something that concerns both of them. He asks if she'll be there when he gets back, and she says that she will. After he leaves, she unconvincingly says that this is all part of her plan.

Tad points out that Carrie was with Gerard all day, his mother is furious with her. She asks Tad if he knew she was psychic. She shows him the crystal ball Gerard gave her. She stares into it, and says that it's changing. He asks if she can see the new governess, since this one won't last long. She says she sees the two of them lying dead in the room. He tells her that she's crazy. She's frightened.

Daphne is writing in her diary when Samantha arrives with a note from Quentin. She asks if Daphne cried and told him what an ogre she was. Daphne says she did not, but he did mention how she upset Tad's school routine. She reminds Daphne that she runs the house.

Quentin speaks to Joanna's doctor. She says they thought she would return home, and her body turned up on the beach. He mentions a visitor she had before disappearing, nothing that she was quite violent when the girl left. He tries to remember more.

Quentin bursts into the drawing room and tells Daphne that he knows who she is — the sister of Joanna Mills.

Our thoughts:

John: Quentin doesn't do a very convincing job fake-playing the piano. That aside, I don't think what was playing warranted the initial accolades Samantha threw at him.

Christine: I love how Quentin threatened to finish his time traveling staircase and send Trask to another century on it. That would be awesome!

John: We seem to be pretty far from the loving-ghost relationship between Daphne, Tad and Carrie that we saw in 1970. Or was it 1995? Do you think that in time, they'll come to be the best of friends we were led to believe they were? Or do you think that friendship developed out of post-mortem necessity?

Christine: Tad certainly is a little devil, which makes him very entertaining to watch. They may end up bonding together against the cruel and evil ways of Judard. Either they wear the same outfits every day or they are on their way out soon, considering they are currently adorned in the outfits they will be wearing in their afterlives.

John: After an opening fake-out, Quentin finally confirms by the end of the episode what we've known for some time: Daphne is Joanna's sister! And now we wait for the rest of the story...

Christine: Thank goodness he found that out quickly, because I don't know that I could endure much more of his kissy face with Daphne.

Dark Shadows Episode 1066 7/27/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

Julia, Barnabas and Quentin return to Collinwood and listen outside the playroom door. They hear music playing. Quentin doesn't want to go in, and Barnabas tells him that they must. They open the door, and Quentin shouts, "No" before running out. Barnabas and Julia step inside and see David. Barnabas asks him if he recognizes them. He doesn't speak, but he turns and walks through a wall. Julia says it was David's ghost. Barnabas points out that he didn't recognize them. He is sure the room didn't exist in 1970, but he's sure it's responsible for what happened. Julia asks why Quentin ran off—and where to? They go searching for him.

Quentin runs downstairs, and is drawn to the drawing room. He looks around but sees no one. He begs to be left alone. He says if it lets him go, he'll never come back again. He's tortured by a mechanical sound. He tries to get out, but the front doors won't open. The sound stops. Quentin looks around the foyer. Upstairs, he sees the mysterious man, who comes downstairs and Quentin begs him to stay away. He collapses to the ground.

He looks up as someone touches his shoulder, only to see that it's Barnabas. Quentin says he has them trapped, and Barnabas asks who he's talking about. He says he's on the landing, and he's going to kill them. Barnabas tells Quentin that he and Julia were just on the landing, and there's no one there. Quentin warns Barnabas that the man will kill him, as Barnabas makes his way upstairs. Barnabas assures Quentin that there's no one to be afraid of. Quentin says the door is locked and there's no way out. Barnabas opens the door, and asks Quentin to return to the old house with them. He refuses, and runs off. Julia says she once again feels the presence of evil. He looks around and tells her there's no one there. He leads her out of the house. After they're gone, the ghost of the mysterious man appears on the landing once more.

In the garden, Julia and Barnabas see David and a young girl. They avoid being seen. Barnabas and Julia hear the music again. David takes the girl by the hand and dances with her. Julia explains they're not dancing in a 1970 style. They watch as the girl leans in to kiss David, and then they walk away from the house. Barnabas calls to David. They watch as they disappear walking towards the woods. Julia suggests that Quentin will know who the girl is.

Back at the old house, Quentin asks someone why they won't appear for him. Barnabas and Julia return to hear him speak of a burden of guilt he's felt for years, and the memory Daphne is all he has left. When Quentin sees them, he asks how long they've been there. Barnabas asks him if Daphne is the girl they saw with David. Quentin says that David is dead. Barnabas agrees, and says they saw him in the playroom. Quentin says he saw Tad in the playroom. Barnabas explains that they saw David, and asks who Tad was. Quentin grabs Barnabas, and then gets a hold of himself. Julia suggests that Quentin go upstairs and get some rest. He does so, reluctantly. Julia tells Barnabas that it will soon be dawn. Barnabas recounts the three meaningless names they learned today, and heads for his coffin.

Quentin comes downstairs and sees Julia asleep in a chair. She wakes. He asks who locked the attic room, and she says it was Barnabas, to protect Quentin's portrait. He asks where Barnabas is, and she reminds him that it's still daytime, and Barnabas can't come out before dark. He doesn't understand. He asks Julia to tell Barnabas that he wants to see him.

He leaves, and Julia sees the girl outside the old house, beckoning her. She goes outside and follows the girl to Collinwood.

The girl leads Julia upstairs. She goes into a room and closes the door. Julia follows her and is in the playroom in the dark.

The door slams shut behind her, and she can't get it open. She sees the mysterious man watching her.

Our thoughts

John: I've got good news and bad news! The good news is, David's got a girlfriend! The bad news is, they both appear to be dead!

Christine: Do you think you may have mixed up the good news and bad news? I wonder what happened to Amy. There's been no mention of her at all.

John: Carrie, Daphne, Gerard... I'm not used to so many new names with new faces attached. I'm starting to get concerned that we're going to lose more of our old standbys as things start to wind down in Collinwood.

Christine: After watching a show every day for 4 years, it's natural for viewers to become emotionally invested in the characters that are central to the show. While we still have Julia and Barnabas, it is unforgivable for the writers to abandon the characters we have known and loved from the very first episode. Are we never to see Elizabeth or Roger again? Will we only know Carolyn with lipstick painted above her lips and crocheted vests? This may be where the show started to lose viewers.

John: Let's see, when she's with Barnabas, Julia is terrified of Collinwood. But following a ghost girl, Julia is no longer afraid? I hope we get an official introduction to Gerard soon.

Christine: Did you notice how protective Barnabas was every time she acted terrified, putting an arm around her to guide her safely away? Julia's no dummy.

Dark Shadows Episode 1065 7/24/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

Julia and Barnabas follow Carolyn as she makes her way into a room upstairs in the ruins of Collinwood. Barnabas says he doesn't ever remember seeing the room. They hear music, and Carolyn laughing. Barnabas opens the door. They go into a playroom and Carolyn tells them to get out. Julia asks him if he saw them, and he says that he did, but he wasn't sure what it was. She says it was like two people, but they disappeared. He points out that this room isn't in ruins like the rest of the house. Carolyn tells them to go away.

Julia asks her what they saw, and she says they saw nothing. Barnabas asks if it was the same spirit they saw downstairs. Julia asks her whose voices they heard. Carolyn says she was talking to herself. Carolyn says she was asking how long until everyone comes back. She asks if they know when everyone will be back. Julia says that they also want to know where everyone is. Carolyn asks how they found the room, and Julia says they followed her. She tells them they must leave, and Barnabas says he won't leave without her. Carolyn threatens to call the sheriff. Barnabas asks her to come find them at the old house house if she changes her mind.

After they're gone, she says he wouldn't like it if she changed her mind, and speaks to someone named Tad, who appears to have disappeared, upsetting Carolyn further.

Old man Stokes reads a letter stating that Quentin Collins condition has worsened. Barnabas and Julia visit old man Stokes, and he says he has nothing to tell them. Stokes asks them why they didn't leave. Barnabas says they were at Collinwood earlier, and Stokes says their lives are in danger. Barnabas says they saw the face of a man in the window—after something almost killed Julia. They ask who the man is. Stokes says many people claim to see things at Collinwood; it doesn't mean they exist. Julia reads the letter about Quentin. Stokes grabs it from her.

Barnabas asks where Quentin is, and Stokes hands him the letter. Barnabas is shocked to hear Quentin is in a mental institution, and Stokes points out that like them, he hasn't aged in 25 years. Barnabas says they must go and see him. Stokes says he just got word that Quentin escaped yesterday. Barnabas asks why everyone is too frightened to speak. He begs Stokes to tell them what he knows.

Stokes says he knows very little. Julia doesn't understand. Stokes says that he was traveling when it all happened. He returned to find Collinwood in ruins. After he returned he heard rumors of strange happening. He attempted an exorcism and almost paid for it with his life. He says he saw the ghost, and was surrounded by an overwhelming sense of evil. He says he turned and ran, and never went back. He says the rest of the family vanished; possibly buried somewhere in the house. He says Quentin was found wandering in the woods; incoherent, and Carolyn was cowering in the tower room. Both gone mad. He believes that Carolyn is the only one that knows what really happened, and the secret is buried in the darkest corner of her mind. Barnabas tells Stokes that he's going to help them, and he says he's willing to try. They leave him, and Carolyn enters. She accuses him of telling them about the room. He assures her that he didn't. He asks her to sit down so he can talk to her.

Back at Collinwood, Julia and Barnabas return to the playroom. He wonders why it isn't also in ruins. Julia finds a birthday card to 'Tad' from 'Carrie.' He wonders who those people are.

Back at the old house, Julia asks if he thinks Stokes was telling the truth, and he says he was. He says he'd like to speak to Quentin. Barnabas says Quentin's portrait must be intact, since he hasn't grown old. They hear something upstairs, and go to investigate.

Carolyn tells Stokes there won't be another birthday party for another year, and asks if she'll have to wait that long to see Tad again. Stokes asks her to remember what happened back in 1970. He says they've been friends for a long time, and she says he has new friends now. He explains that Julia and Barnabas are trying to help. She says they spoiled the party.

Barnabas and Julia go into an upstairs room at the old house, where they find the withered and decayed portrait of Quentin. Quentin comes in with a knife, saying, "Let me kill him." and is stopped by Barnabas before he can destroy the portrait.

Quentin says he deserves to die. Quentin asks who they are, and Barnabas asks if he recognizes them. Quentin says that they can't be; says it's one of the attendant's tricks. They take Quentin downstairs.

Stokes says Carolyn has said everyone will come back to Collinwood, and asks if she knows where everyone went. He asks if their coming back depends on her. He suggests that if she could remember that night in 1970, Collinwood could change to what it was. He asks her to try and remember. She tells him there are times when she thinks she remembers, but she can never put all the fragments together. He offers to take her home.

Quentin says he doesn't understand how they got there, or why they look the same. Quentin says he accepts that. He says he has failed in what he came to do. Barnabas says they need his help, and asks what happened 25 years ago. Quentin says he should have prevented it, but he didn't, and he deserves to die. Barnabas asks what he was doing in the woods that night, and Quentin says he doesn't know. Barnabas asks Quentin about the playroom in Collinwood, and he denies knowing. Barnabas says it wasn't there in 1970, and Quentin says that it was. Barnabas asks Quentin to take them there. Julia says that may not be wise. Quentin says if going will help prove it to them, then he'll go.

The three return to Collinwood, and listen outside the playroom door, where they hear music playing. Quentin doesn't want to go in, and Barnabas tells him that they must. They open the door, and Quentin says no before running out. Barnabas and Julia step inside and see David.

Our thoughts

John: Wait - Stokes returned to Collinwood in 1970 to find it in ruins and rubble like it looks today? That would seem even more shocking than it happening over 25 years. And yet he never figured out what happened? A man of mystics and science, not the least bit curious?

Christine: He may not be telling them the whole story. I wonder how long before we learn the whole story.

John: I have to admit, I had forgotten that Quentin's lack of aging would be tied to his portrait, looking particularly ghoulish today. But what I couldn't immediately recall is whether the portrait is any different in 1995 than it was when we last saw it? One would think it should be significantly different...

Today's episode

Episode 932
Christine: It looks the same as it did in Episode 932. I suppose it should look even more decrepit, but why mess with such a perfectly gruesome portrait? Quite a few portraits were on display today, with the Mustache Man appearing in his usual spot at Eliot Stokes' place and a new portrait hanging outside the play room. Incidentally, I wonder if Stokes keeps that large platter of grapes on hand for whenever Carolyn drops in. She either really loves grapes or hasn't eaten in a while.

John: David! Or David's ghost, as the case may be. Possibly turning the tables after months of Quentin's ghost hanging around the living David. I hope that when we go back to 1970, someone will explain where we left things off when we were last there, because I'm so confused I'm having a heck of a time remembering! Will we be ignoring werewolf curses, and the like? I guess we'll find out soon enough... we can't hang around in 1995 forever... or can we?

Christine: I'm not sure we'll ever find our way back to 1970 the way things are going. The handy thing about this blog is you can easily refresh your memory of where we left off before our parallel adventure with just one click. Head on over to Episode 980 to revisit our last day in 1970 when Barnabas killed Sky because he had killed Jeb after trying to kill Carolyn. It's no wonder Collinwood fell apart after all that. It's possible Dan Curtis was hoping to stay away long enough that viewers would forget all about the Leviathans.
