Dark Shadows Episode 1198 1/27/71

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

In the drawing room, Barnabas tells Angelique that he knows how he feels. Trask bursts in and calls out, "Die, witch!" before shooting her. Barnabas wrestles the gun away from Trask and says he should have killed him before. He drops him to the ground and calls to Julia.

Angelique asks him to hold her, telling him she's dying. He tells her that he loves her. She dies in his arms.

Trask starts to get up, and Barnabas grabs him. Trask runs upstairs and Barnabas follows him. He finds his way into a room and grabs a letter opener. He stabs Barnabas with it, but Barnabas sticks it in his belly. Trask wanders into the room in the East Wing and is transported into parallel time. Barnabas sees him, and then watches as he disappears when the room reverts to being empty.

Barnabas comes downstairs and picks up Trask's gun. He lays it on a table and kneels beside Angelique's dead body. He tells her that he was so often blinded by his fury, yet beneath his rage was a love as strong as hers.

Julia comes in, and he tells her that Angelique is dead. He says Trask killed her before she knew that he loved her. He explains that she was his only love, and she never knew. She asks what happened, and he says Trask attacked him, and has disappeared into parallel time.

Desmond wonders where Leticia is. Flora says she doesn't know. She's just pleased that he is free. She chides herself for falling for Gerard's charm. She says that at least he brought them Leticia. Leticia returns and she and Desmond embrace and kiss. Flora leaves them. He asks where she has been, and she says she's been walking on the beach. He tells her that they're leaving Collinsport to get married in New York.

Barnabas tells Julia and Stokes that the police believed his story. He adds that Angelique is to be buried in the family mausoleum. Stokes says they must return to their own time. Barnabas asks how, and Stokes says they must ascend Quentin's staircase. He says they must return to Collinwood in their time to know if they've succeeded. He says it's 1971 there now. Barnabas wonders about what their visit has done to Collinwood in 1971. Desmond walks in and asks if they've gone mad, saying 1971 is 130 years from now. Julia explains that they came from the future. Stokes says they came down Quentin's staircase. He says they must be destroyed. Barnabas tells them they must leave him there. They're adamant that he must return with them. Desmond says that if Barnabas is staying for Valerie's funeral, he and Leticia can stay. Barnabas agrees to trying to ascend the stairs.

Desmond is amazed to hear about the room in the East Wing, after hearing about the stairs. Barnabas says he must stop Trask if he tries to escape from parallel time. Desmond assures them that if he escapes, he will deal with him. He says he will tell no one the secret but Leticia and Quentin. They say their goodbyes. He asks how he will know if they made it, and Barnabas says he must assume that they have. As they ascend the stairs, Julia asks what they should do if they return to Collinwood in ruins. At the top of the stairs, Stokes opens the door and the three step through into disco lights.

Barnabas, Julia and Stokes exit the stairwell. Collinwood is still standing, and Julia assumes they changed everything.

Two hours later, Barnabas dressed in 1971 fashions, Barnabas says they haven't seen a single person in the whole house. Stokes points out the refrigerator was full of food. Julia says there are no signs of the ghosts of Gerard and Daphne. Elizabeth walks in and tells them they're all late for opening of the historical center. She tells them to hurry. She says she returned to get Roger's speech. Julia asks if David and Hallie are there, and Elizabeth confirms it. Barnabas asks about Quentin and Carolyn, and she says they are there as well. She finds Roger's speech, and invites them to go with her. She mentions to Stokes that she found a journal from one of her ancestors, Flora Collins, in the West Wing that she's giving to the historical society tonight. Barnabas tells Julia that the ghosts of Gerard and Daphne never came there. He says the stairway is likely no more; destroyed by Desmond.

Desmond chops at the staircase, wondering if Barnabas, Julia and Stokes made it back to their own time.

Leticia calls to Desmond. He comes upstairs and she says she was worried about him. He tells her to come with her to the East Wing.

Leticia can't believe that Valerie is dead, and Trask is in another band of time. He tells her to wait until she hears the rest. He opens the door to an empty room. He stops her before she enters, and it suddenly changes. They see Trask, stabbed, calling for help. Leticia says that he's dead. She then sees Julia enter and call to Flora. Flora arrives and says it finally happened. What they've dreaded. Julia shuts the doors Desmond and Leticia are watching from. Flora says first poor Stella, and now this stranger. Julia goes back to the door and looks for anyone. She sees no one. She tells Flora they must get rid of the body.

Melanie is looking for Julia. She calls to her mother. Flora appears and Melanie tells her that her father is dying. Julia says that the lottery will happen again before the week is over.

Our thoughts:

John: While tending to her wound, Barnabas was applying compressions to Angelique's chest like he was ringing a bell to call a servant!

Christine: It's interesting that Barnabas has finally realized that he loves Angelique. Think of all the trouble he could have saved the family if he'd admitted it much sooner.

John: So for all intents and purposes, it looks like on this day we saw the 'finale' of Dark Shadows. Chronologically speaking, anyway. And lest anyone think that 1840 parallel time would continue with any relevance to the show, Trask has up and died, and his body already disposed of. At this point, I'm doubting we'll even see any more of our time band in 1840.

Christine: At least we know there are two happy couples, the kids will survive, and Flora will go on to flourish as a novelist. Perhaps she'll go exploring in the east wing and get the inspiration to pen "The Collins Lottery."

John: I guess it's now safe to assume we'll ride out the remainder of the show's run watching this other soap opera play out. This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.

Christine: It is disappointing to be whisked away to a parallel past without spending some time with the present day Collins family.

Dark Shadows Episode 1095 9/4/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Carolyn asks her mother to sit down so she can begin her concert. She starts to sing the Pansy Faye song. Julia hears her from upstairs and rushes into the drawing room, screaming for Carolyn to stop. Elizabeth asks her what's the matter. Carolyn asks Julia if she liked her song. Julia says it's too late, and rushes upstairs to check on the children. Carolyn resumes singing, and ultimately collapses.

Just as Julia reaches the top of the stairs, Elizabeth calls to her and she runs back down. She checks Carolyn, who asks what happened. They tell her she fainted, and she asks if she finished her song. Her mother tells her that she did. Carolyn says she won't forget that Julia was rude, and didn't like her song. Julia tries to explain that her singing was one of the clues she and Barnabas brought back from 1995. Carolyn says the clues are ridiculous, and Julia asks why. Hallie and David eavesdrop on them as Julia accuses Carolyn of seeing Gerard. She says he is making her act this way. Elizabeth tells Julia not now, and she goes upstairs to check on the children.

Hallie says it's all beginning just like she knew it would. He asks why Carolyn is Leticia. She asks if he wants Carolyn to live with them in Rose Cottage. Julia walks in and asks how they are. He says they feel terrible. Working on the Middle Ages in the middle of the summer. She asks if they heard the singing downstairs, and they deny it. She leaves them to their studies. Hallie says sometimes she wishes they had told someone, and he says that there may be a way.

Barnabas rises from the basement as Julia arrives at the old house. She tells him that Carolyn has seen Gerard, because tonight she sang her song. She says she checked on the children, and then came to see him. She says that she's convinced Carolyn is possessed, noting that she says she has a second sight. Barnabas asks her the words of the song, and Julia recites, "I want to dance with you..." He asks if she remembers Pansy Faye, and points out that was her song. Julia says Pansy Faye couldn't be alive in 1840. Barnabas says Gerard has made his mistake — he doesn't know that Barnabas was in 1897 and knew Pansy Faye.

Carolyn tells her mother that she feels different now. After Jeb's death, she was inside herself, but now she's changed. Barnabas and Julia arrive. Carolyn says that Julia ran to him and now he's come to question her. He says he thought she took their situation seriously. Carolyn tells her mother to go to David and Hallie. Elizabeth says that once the night is through and nothing has happened, she hopes they'll forget their ridiculous fantasy.

She goes upstairs, and Carolyn says they want to know where and when she met Gerard. Barnabas says he actually wants to know where she found the song she sang. She says she found it in a book. She says she heard Julia mention there was a concert on this day in 1839. Barnabas asks Carolyn if she ever heard of Pansy Faye. She says no, and he says the Carolyn with second sight would. He asks her to demonstrate her talent. She says she doesn't have to prove it. He asks if she's willing to help them, and asks her to see into the past to find where she learned that song. She says she thinks she learned it in another life, and he asks where. Carolyn has a vision of the carousel in the playroom. He says she must take them to the playroom. She says she saw it in her mind, and he asks if that's all. She says she's helped them all she can, and begs them to leave her alone. Barnabas tells Julia they must get David and Hallie out of the house tonight.

David picks up a doll that looks a bit like Barnabas. Hallie asks if they put the doll in Rose Cottage, will Barnabas be able to find the room. He says Carolyn did. Hallie says that Gerard will see to it that no one tells. David says that Barnabas is different. He tells her it's worth a try.

Julia tells Barnabas that Carolyn is calmer. Barnabas tells Elizabeth that Carolyn's condition is proof that something is happening. He asks to bring the children to Stokes' house, and she refuses. Barnabas asks if she's willing to risk the children's lives?

As they approach the playroom, Hallie asks David if Gerard will know they put the doll in Rose Cottage. He says not to talk about it once they're in the room. They enter, and call to Gerard. He doesn't appear. They place the Barnabas doll inside Rose Cottage, and leave the playroom.

Elizabeth says she doesn't know why she brought them to the children's room. The kids aren't there. They come in after the others and David asks if a convention is underway. Elizabeth asks where they've been. Barnabas suddenly feels something. Julia says it's cold. Barnabas notices that Elizabeth feels it, too. The children do not, and Barnabas tells them to go to Hallie's room. He tells Elizabeth they must get the children out of the house.

David tells Hallie he knew something was wrong as soon as he felt Gerard's presence in his room. They return to the playroom and find the Barnabas doll broken on the floor. Hallie says Gerard didn't want Barnabas to be there.

Barnabas tells Julia to bring the children to Stokes. Elizabeth asks him to promise that the children won't be alarmed. He says they'll handle it.

Hallie tells David she doesn't want to be punished, and he tells her to go to her room.

Julia and Barnabas go upstairs to get the children.

In the drawing room, Elizabeth speaks to Gerard, saying she didn't know what to do.

Barnabas goes into David's room and finds it empty.

David comes downstairs, and says yes. He goes out the front door. He asks Gerard if he's going to be punished. He says he must follow, and walks into the woods.

Our thoughts:

John: Are Barnabas and Julia keeping their own Catastro-tracker? Surely they know the murder has to take place before bad things will truly happen in Collinwood? Each time one is identified, it's as if they've forgotten that the individual clues don't appear to matter.

Christine: With every clue that gets checked off the list, they know their chances of saving Collinwood are diminished. If the last clue happens before they can stop it, then Collinwood is lost.

John: What dumb luck that Pansy Faye only sang the one song over and over, ensuring that years into the future that would be recognized as her (one and only) calling card. I wonder if Nancy Barrett wanted to sing on the show... though if she did, I can't imagine her only wanting to sing one song, over and over again...

Christine: Well, Quentin had his song, Angelique had her song, and this is the song for Carolyn's incarnations, but my question is, why bring this one back? It had its moment. Why not have Cobert compose an entirely new theme for 1840? Maybe Daphne's song or Gerard's song? I don't relish the thought of having to hear this tune ad nauseam again. The only thing I enjoy about it is how much Nancy Barrett throws herself into it.

John: I could barely recognize the expelled Barnabas doll as the one David had created. So much for his getting back to the playroom. We can only wonder what sort of punishment pirate Gerard has lined up for David!

Christine: At least this doll looked a little bit nicer than the Carolyn/Leticia doll before it was dismantled. I am wondering what the market would be for a whole line of Collins family clothespin dolls. Etsy, here I come!

Dark Shadows Episode 1094 9/3/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Carolyn enters the playroom, wondering why she's there, and how it can be, considering the room doesn't exist. She walks to the carousel music box. She looks around the room, wondering who called her there. She doesn't see Gerard's ghost standing behind her. She turns and gasps.

She asks who he is. He approaches her and she tries to escape, but she can't leave the room. He touches her head, and she says she knows him. She smiles and remembers the playroom, and Rose Cottage. She picks up the doll representing her and says she's Leticia, and asks Gerard how she could have forgotten.

Julia comes downstairs and asks Elizabeth if she's seen Carolyn. She told her it was important not to leave Maggie alone. Elizabeth asks why Maggie can't be left alone, and Julia tells her that she gets very restless. Elizabeth wonders what kind of animal could have attacked her. Elizabeth reads a book on astrology, and tells Julia that she trusts astrology more than the story she and Barnabas had been peddling. She goes so far as to suggest the last clue won't come true, as Carolyn cannot sing.

Caro-Leticia remembers the lovely times she had with Gerard. She asks him if he remembers how Leticia used to please him, and promises to do the same before leaving the playroom. Gerard's snarl almost turns to a smile for the first time.

Julia tells Elizabeth she's not going to give up trying to decipher the clues. She opens Quentin's diary and says she opened it to the current day, but back in 1839. Elizabeth asks her what terrible event happened. She says he had a vision of the future, and the next day he got a collection of books on witchcraft from England, and there was a concert in the drawing room. Carolyn comes in and searches the room for something. She says she's trying to find something; a present for everyone. she leaves, and Elizabeth follows after her. Julia continues reading the diary.

In a cobwebbed room, Carolyn opens a trunk full of old clothes. She finds a dress and a hat, which she puts on. Her mother walks in and asks what she's doing in this room. She continues to rummage through the trunk. She tells her mother to leave her alone, saying she's become interested in the past. Elizabeth tells her they'll talk later, and leaves her to her searching. Carolyn finds a book, which she identifies as Gerard's surprise.

Shaw arrives at Collinwood to see Maggie. Julia says she's not seeing anyone. He asks if she'll be alright. He asks Julia to ask Maggie if she'll see him. She sends him into the drawing room and goes upstairs. He picks up Elizabeth's horoscope when Carolyn walks in. When she sees him, she turns away, upset. She apologizes. He asks if it's something he did, and she says it's nothing he's done. She says that he's unhappy because he's terribly dependent on someone and he doesn't want to be. He denies it, but she says she can see it. She says she can see into people now, past the surface—a second sight. Julia walks in and asks if that's true. She tells Shaw that Maggie is asleep, but Elizabeth would like to see him. He goes upstairs to see her, and Julia tells Carolyn she's fascinated to hear about her second sight. She asks when she got that gift, and Carolyn asks what business is that of hers, and Julia proclaims that anything strange in Collinwood is her business. Carolyn says she doesn't know what Julia is talking about, and runs out of the room.

Elizabeth tells Shaw that she's also concerned about Maggie, but she's getting the best of care. He asks her to see if Maggie will see him. She says she's sure she will when she's better, and adds that she'd like him to do Maggie's horoscope when she's feeling better. She goes to get him her book on astrology. Carolyn confronts Shaw and asks why he doesn't tell her mother that the horoscope is all a lie. He says she's wrong, and she tells him she can't see why he did it, but he deliberately wrote false predictions. He says he's very serious about his work. She laughs at him. Elizabeth returns with the book, and after giving it to Shaw, he rushes out.

Elizabeth asks what she was talking with him about, and she says it was nothing. Carolyn tells her mother that she has to light the candles for her surprise. She says she's very nervous, and tells her mother to call everyone in. She arranges chairs, and says she can call them in. Elizabeth calls for Julia. She goes to the foyer and sees Gerard's ghost. She returns to the drawing room and asks her mother to sit down so she can begin her concert. She starts to sing the Pansy Faye song. Julia hears her from upstairs and rushes into the drawing room, screaming for Carolyn to stop.

Our thoughts:

John: Wouldn't Elizabeth assume that Maggie was attacked by the same kind of animal that had attacked her not that long ago? A wolf that walked upright, wearing mans clothes? Perhaps she already got the memo that the werewolves had been written out of the show.

Christine: I was screaming for Carolyn to stop along with Julia! Just when I got "I Wanna Dance With You" out of my head, it has come back to haunt us all.

John: How intensive can your research be if you randomly open books to decide where to start reading? I guess we are to assume the concert Quentin referenced was Leticia Faye singing? And since Carolyn only knows one song, does that mean Leticia Faye is somehow related to Carl's widow Pansy Faye? I can't wait to see how they connect these dots in the Collins family history...

Christine: Didn't Pansy Faye also have the gift of second sight? There must be some relation.

John: Tick off the Catastro-tracker! The ghost of Gerard is finally smiling, suggesting that we're now just a murder away from the destruction of Collinwood!

Christine: Julia told Elizabeth that "the destruction of Rose Cottage" was one of three clues left. We prematurely checked off the appearance of Rose Cottage, since 1995 Carolyn's list wasn't quite so specific and only listed Rose Cottage. The Catastro-tracker has been updated to reflect this new information. Fortunately, that means we are not as close to the catastrophe at Collinwood as we thought!

Dark Shadows Episode 1089 8/27/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Elizabeth comes downstairs, calling to Julia that they must get the children out of Collinwood tonight. When she swings the drawing room doors open, she comes face to face with the ghost of Gerard. She asks who he is and what he's doing in the house. He reaches towards her and she tells him to stay away, but he just closes the door behind her.

Hallie tells David to quit thinking about it. He wonders why they haven't seen any of the ghosts in the past few days. He says there's a reason. Hallie asks if it's because they haven't been to the playroom, and he says if they wanted them to do that, they would have. Hallie asks if they're really free. He says they can find out. He says if you stand on someone's grave at midnight, you can tell if their spirit is at rest. He says he's going to stand on Gerard's grave tonight. She says she doesn't want to come with him, but she won't let him go alone.

Gerard reaches out and touches Elizabeth's face. She appears to be in a trance, and says she understands everything, and the children will not leave the house.

As she says she knows what must be done, Julia approaches the drawing room and enters. She asks Elizabeth who she was talking to. She says she startled her. She explains that she was on the phone with her lawyer. Julia doesn't believe her, sensing evil in the room. Elizabeth says the idea of spirits in the house is the figment of someone's imagination. She says her horoscope has convinced her that they are not on the brink of a catastrophe. Julia asks about yesterday's message, and Elizabeth says it has no meaning. Julia recommends removing the children, and Elizabeth assures her that they are safe.

Julia says she found information on a ship called the Java Queen, like the model David found in the attic. She says the real ship was shipwrecked near Collinsport on this day in 1840. Elizabeth says it's a fascinating coincidence, and leaves the room. Julia is sure that it's more. She doesn't notice as David and Hallie sneak out the front door. Julia continues reading about the Java Queen, and how the crew perished but the unknown captain was believed to survive. He vowed to unite his evil followers in death to kill and plunder once more.

David and Hallie arrive at Gerard's grave. Hallie says she wants to get over it and go home. He says it's not midnight yet. David points out a locked off area where criminals and misfits were buried hundreds of years ago. He says their souls had no place to go. Hallie says it's almost twelve. He points out that it's 10 seconds away. Lightning crashes and Hallie asks if they can go. They see the ghost of Gerard standing nearby, staring at them. He approaches them with his arms outstretched, and they run away.

Back at Collinwood, Hallie says that now they know. They sneak in the front door, seen by Julia. She asks them what they were doing outside. He says they were just walking. She points out that no one goes for a walk near one in the morning. He threatens to tell his aunt, and he begs her not to. She tells them to join her in the drawing room to tell her about it. He says they were talking in his room, and then David wanted to show Hallie a constellation. Julia doesn't buy it. David begs her not to tell his aunt. Julia tells Hallie that she thinks they know more than they admit. She says they're on the same side, and she won't tell Mrs. Stoddard. David takes a note from the book Julia was reading. She sends them upstairs. Julia is sure they know more than they're telling, and doesn't know how to get them to admit it.

As she starts upstairs, she sees Elizabeth at the top of the stairs, placing the bust that almost killed her in 1995. She asks Julia if she likes it. Julia asks what made her decide to place it there, and explains that she was almost crushed by it in the future. Elizabeth doesn't get the relevance. Julia tries to explain that the bust was there in the future because she just placed it there. Elizabeth tells her that she and Barnabas need to forget about 1995.

David reads the note from Julia's book. He says it was signed with the letter G, which he assumed was Gerard. It speaks of watching for a green flag in the window at Collinwood as a sign. David says they must do something to please Gerard. He says he'll go to the tower room and if he finds a green flag, he'll wave it three times.

David enters the tower room with a candle. He looks around for a green flag. He finds it, and goes to the window. He opens it and waves the flag two times, calling to Gerard that he's following his instructions.

In the graveyard, the earth begins to move.

Our thoughts:

John: Still no words from Gerard, but he was able to possess Elizabeth. That can't bode well for anyone in the house. Do you think he'll be snarling all the time in 1840? Or just when he's not talking?

Christine: I really think you need to give up on the notion that you're ever going to hear Gerard the angry ghost speak. If Gerard was the pirate we're being led to believe he was, then I expect lots of snarling and maybe a few ARGHs in 1840. If we're lucky, maybe he'll delight us with an "ARGH, matey!"

John: It's pretty silly to believe that David found a note from Gerard in one of Julia's books before she would have had a chance to read and interpret it. The writers should have planted it in the Java Queen model.

Christine: Yes, that would be silly, except the note wasn't in Julia's book while she was holding it.  I think we are supposed to assume that Gerard snuck it in the book purposefully so David would find it and wave the green flag to wake his dead army.

John: The zombies are coming back to Collinwood! Too bad they won't be rising from the ocean, Zombies of Mora Tau-style... Will they bring about the death of the children and the destruction of Collinwood? Where's Quentin? And do you think Barnabas will be back in time to stop them? Or is he going to miss out on all the fun?

Christine: Barnabas who? I think David's garish blue vest has aligned him with evil, since he seemed so eager to do something to please Gerard. How cute that David held Hallie's hand for the first time while standing on Gerard's grave.
