Dark Shadows Episode 1127 10/20/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Desmond returns to the secret grave and finds the body gone. He sees the bejeweled mask on the ground, next to Tim's dead body. He realizes that the Bedford atrocities may resume, and the body will kill them all.

Gabriel plays chess by himself when Samantha comes into the drawing room. He welcomes her home, and she asks him where Quentin is. He says he doesn't know, but is surprised she even came back. He asks her if she's come back to announce her choice. He asks if she told Tad about her curious dilemma. She says she wants him to leave Tad alone and not upset him. Gabriel asks if Tad influenced her decision. She says she has told him the facts, and if he brings it up in front of Tad, she'll kill him. Gabriel says she can't threaten him now that Quentin is back. Gabriel reminds her that he has a curious effect on Quentin. She says that every time Quentin sees him, he remembers the accident that Gabriel makes him feel guilty about.

Desmond prepares to destroy the head with an axe, only to find that it's gone. He asks how it could be as Samantha walks in. She asks him what's wrong. He says he was just chopping wood. She asks if he can go get Gerard, and he does.

Gerard hugs Samantha, and asks her if she has made a decision. She shakes her head. She explains that it's cruel to them all. He asks if he'll run into Quentin's arms as he did into his. She mentions Tad, and says he told her how kind Gerard was to him on the ship. She tells him that she is weak. He tells her that he forced her to marry him. She tells him that whatever she decides, she wants him to know that she loves him, and she kisses him.

Leticia is in her room when Desmond comes in. He asks if she took something from the drawing room. He says she told him to get rid of the head, and she asks if it's gone. He says it is, and if she didn't take it... He asks if she has it, and she tells him she would if she did. She says that it's for the best that it's gone. She tells him that it's evil, and he shouldn't try to find it.

Gabriel points out that everyone is looking for Quentin today. He asks Desmond about the riddle he helped solve, and what he found. He accuses him of not wanting to share the information with him, and using his strong hand brings Desmond to his knees.

Quentin comes in and tells Gabriel to let him go. Desmond tells Gabriel he knows nothing, and Gabriel rolls out of the room, pointing out that Tad and Samantha are back, although Samantha has already gone out. Desmond tells Quentin that he didn't give him the gift that he brought back for him. Quentin asks what it was, and Desmond explains that it was the head of Judah Zachery.

Gerard and Samantha make out. She says she must make it back to Collinwood. He says she'd be a fool not to choose Quentin, as opposed to a penniless, homeless wanderer like him. They kiss again. Leticia walks in and says they're lucky it was only her. Samantha excuses herself and leaves. Leticia congratulates Gerard, and he says she was merely kissing him goodbye. Leticia tells him that he never used to lie to her. She says he doesn't have to worry about her — she has a brand new interest and is planning to keep it.

Desmond explains to Quentin that Judah Zachery's body must have found the head, and they are now reunited and alive. Quentin explains that a severed head can't live, and a headless body would have decomposed. He says they have to find Zachery, and Desmond says they can't kill him. Quentin grabs a gun and says they wouldn't know until they find him.

Samantha returns, and Gabriel tells her that Quentin knows she was back, which didn't stop him from going out. He asks her how Gerard is, and she stomps upstairs.

Quentin says he can't understand how the body would know where to find the head. He says he doesn't think the two are together. He asks Desmond if he disposed of Braithwaite's body, and he says he did. Quentin tells Desmond to get some rest, and assures him they'll find their way out of this mess.

Leticia brings Gerard a note from Collinwood. He opens and reads it, and then sets it on the desk and leaves. Leticia laughs.

Gabriel asks Quentin what's the matter with Desmond. Gerard comes in and says he has a note from Samantha. Samantha enters and Gabriel leaves. She closes the door and tells Quentin that he looks tired. He asks her if she has made up her mind. She says that she knows with whom she must spend the rest of her life.

Our thoughts:

John: Wait — now the head IS gone? I still expect to find out that Leticia is responsible, but I call foul after they gave us a glimpse of it during the seance yesterday. And where's that good looking headless body? He's not just going to 'blend' . . .

Christine: Perhaps Flora finally got rid of it after Desmond refused to do as she asked. It looked like Gabriel was tormenting Desmond by giving him a wedgie.

John: Braithwaite? Is drunk Tim supposed to be related to Abe Vigoda's Ezra Braithwaite? Or did the writers just finally run out of names?

Christine: Braithwaite is not an uncommon name, but I'd like to think they were related.

John: My favorite bit in today's episode, which came just before Samantha's non-answer cliffhanger, was when Gabriel tried to roll his wheelchair over Quentin's foot! Ouch!

Christine: I suppose it's one of the many ways he tries to get back at Quentin for putting him in the chair. I hope Samantha chooses both Quentin and Gerard.

Dark Shadows Episode 1126 10/19/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Desmond is in the cemetery below Gallows Hill. He walks a straight line until he reaches an unmarked tombstone. He finds a ring attached to it, which he pulls, and a door opens in the earth, revealing a staircase. He goes inside and finds a coffin, held shut by an immense cross. He opens a door at the head of the coffin, revealing a bejeweled mask. He attempts to remove the cross, but he cannot. He decides he'll need to get help.

Desmond rises from the secret passage in the cemetery and pulls the ring to close it.

At Rose Cottage, Gerard wonders why Leticia couldn't see who Samantha would choose. Flora comes into the room and asks him if he loves Samantha. He nods, and says that she must remain with Quentin. She asks if he'll stay on after she makes her decision. He tells her that Desmond does not want him there, and she assures him that she will handle Desmond. She hugs Gerard as Trask enters.

She asks him if someone has died, as he looks so mournful. He says he must speak to Leticia. Flora introduces Trask to Gerard, and then goes to fetch Leticia. Trask asks Gerard if he's responsible for bringing Leticia to Rose Cottage, and he says he did. Trask asks if Leticia has spoken to Barnabas. He says he thinks Barnabas might try to prevent her from doing her duty — finding his father's remains. Trask suggests to Gerard that he could benefit from helping him find out about Barnabas. He says Barnabas claims to have come from England on a certain boat, but he's not on the passenger list. Gerard offers to find the facts. Flora returns and says Leticia is not in her room. Gerard assures them that no harm can come to Leticia. Trask asks if he can wait, and she offers the two men tea while she drinks a brandy.

Desmond finds a drunk named Tim in a bar, and offers him $20 to help him. Tim asks if he wants someone beat up. Desmond tells him it's an errand of mercy, and tells him no questions, now or afterwards. Desmond says they're going to the Gallows Hill Cemetery, and they leave together.

Trask explains that Leticia is helping him implement their maker's will. Flora asks what she did, and Trask says his father disappeared after entering the gates of Collinwood in 1797. She had a vision of his old house when asked for the location of he father's remains. Flora says that's where Barnabas' father lived, and Trask says he thinks that Barnabas' father had something to do with it. He warns Flora of the son of Barnabas, and suggests that she stay clear of him. He says Barnabas prevented him from searching for his father's remains. Gerard says that if he'd like to speak to his father's spirit, he can conduct a seance.

In the cemetery, Tim says this might not be a good idea. He watches as Desmond pulls a ring and a door opens in the cemetery floor. Desmond tells him to follow him down. Tim sees the coffin, and Desmond says they need to bring it back to his house. He tells Tim he's arranged for a carriage, and tells him to work on moving the cross. Desmond leaves him to his work. After he's gone, Tim opens the faceplate and sees the bejeweled mask behind the glass. He assumes it's worth a fortune.

Gerard calls to Reverend Trask's spirit in a seance with Flora and Lamar Trask. They hear Trask's voice speak of evil in the room. Lamar asks him where. The voice says they are surrounded by evil. Lamar asks who killed him, and the voice says to beware the cross.

Tim knocks the cross off the coffin.

A door swings open, and Gerard warns them that the circle must not be broken. The voice tells them that evil will walk again. They don't notice the head in a box in the room with them.

Tim uses a rock to break open the coffin.

Gerard says they have learned no more. Whatever evil Trask was referring to, he wanted the seance ended.

Tim looks at a well-dressed, body. He removes the mask and is shocked to see there is no head underneath.

Trask says they must discover the evil, and Gerard says it's too late.

Tim admires the bejeweled mask, and turns to see something. He tries to attack it with a rock.

Out of the hole in the cemetery, a headless body arises.

Our thoughts:

John: Um, in retrospect, why would they have buried the body in such a way that it would be accessible for someone to find it and set it free? I'm willing to stipulate that it couldn't be destroyed through any normal means, but unless there was going to be a custodian, like a knight of the crusades left to guard the holy grail, what was the point?

Christine: It would seem that whoever was trying to contain the evil would not have put a ring in a faux gravestone that would open the underground tomb, knowing that just anyone could stumble across it and heft the cross off the coffin, but if they hadn't done that, we wouldn't have a headless guy running around on a Monday!

John: And just like that, it's Seance-time, 1840-style! Break out the tracker! I was surprised that the head was present, both in that I was sure Leticia had removed it, and also because if it were visible, surely one of the participants would have noted a head in a box in the room with them...

Christine: You would think it would have been noticed, especially with the drape parted the way it was, and in Trask's direct line of sight. Too bad his dad couldn't shine his ethereal flashlight on the head so they could have found it, or that Flora didn't recall the evil thing she knew to be in the room already.

John: I wonder why Tim didn't just break the glass and swipe the bejeweled mask? Once he did let it out, I was really hoping we'd get to see the headless body take him out, it almost was worth the visual of the headless body clumsily making it's way out of the grave! They spared us the bloody neck stump, but it just makes the headless body coming out of the ground that much more entertaining. I do hope the headless body will stick around for a while... I'd love to see it stumbling around Collinsport.

Christine: I don't think he could have squeezed the mask through the face plate. It certainly will be fun to have the headless corpse running around blindly in search of its head during the Halloween season!

Dark Shadows Episode 1125 10/16/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Desmond ponders the clues he got from Greene, and then curses him for dying before he could tell him. He turns to the severed head and says he'll find out what it all means before the night is over. Leticia comes in, sees the body on the ground, and asks him what he's done. She asks if he's dead, and he says he is. She tells him it wasn't him, it was the awful thing that did it, and pulls the curtain open revealing the head. She says she was right about feeling evil in the room.

Desmond says Greene died of a heart attack, and she says he died of fear. She adds that he'll kill Desmond, too. She says that it's already begun to happen. She looks at the head and says there's something it wants him to do, and he's too afraid not to do it. He says that before Greene died, he was going to tell him where to find something, and he needs her help. She says she needs it for that thing. She tells him that it would be wrong for her to help him. He grabs her and yells at her, saying that she doesn't have to help him, but she's not to tell anyone, either.

Gerard is drinking in the drawing room when Leticia returns to Collinwood. He asks if she's decided to talk to him again. She says she's not going to forgive him. She says she needed to see him. He asks what she wants. She tells him she doesn't want to stay at Rose Cottage. She says there's an evil spirit there, and she wants him to take her somewhere else. She hugs him.

Gabriel rolls in and points out that Gerard's sympathetic shoulder is always available. Gerard sends her back to Rose Cottage, and tells her that he'll be there soon. After she leaves, he tells Gabriel he always manages to come into rooms at the wrong time. Gabriel tells him that he won't tell Samantha. He points out that Quentin must have surprised him, leaving the decision to Samantha. He laughs. He says that Gerard only married Samantha for her money, and he may be saddled with her for the rest of her life, without any money. Gabriel bets him $1000 that Samantha will choose him. He says she never loved Quentin, and only stayed with him because of Tad. He says he hopes the two of them will be very happy. Gerard says he does love Samantha, and even if he didn't, he would ask her to marry him, just to prevent Gabriel from getting a penny from Daniel Collins. Gabriel screams that he's a liar as Gerard walks out.

Leticia overhears Desmond. He swings the door open and asks what she heard. She asks about the body, and he says Greene's son came and took it away. She tells him that he's got the devil in him, and warns her to take the thing away before it's too late. He says he has no time to waste on her, and storms off. She turns to the head and says it needs to be put somewhere that it can never harm anyone again.

Desmond arrives at Collinwood to see Gabriel. He asks for help, and Gabriel says he won't give him money. Desmond says he doesn't need money. He points out that Otis Greene came to see him and tell him something, but then died of a heart attack. He says he needs Gabriel's mind to help solve a riddle. Gabriel asks him what's in it for him. Desmond says Greene's last words were a noose, an unmarked stone, the ring, the stairs, at the foot of the hill, a direct line, an unmarked stone. Gabriel is intrigued. He says he might have been referring to buried treasure, in which case he's very interested. Gabriel says he has a hunch, and Desmond demands that he tell him. Gabriel says that if he finds something of value, they split it 50-50. He says it sounds like he was referring to Gallows Hill. Desmond smiles. Gabriel tells him to go to Gallows Hill to see if he's right.

At Rose Cottage, Gerard asks Leticia if she feels better. She asks him what he wants. He says he must find out about his future. She points out that he hadn't been willing to help her. She tells him he'll have to find out his future on his own. He asks if she really believes he's in love with Samantha. She asks why he married her, and she says he was thinking of the future—a future with her. She tells him not to make her feel sorry for him. He says his feelings for her will never change. She says she'd rather help him than hear one of his speeches again. She takes a crystal ball out, and tells him that she sees him and a woman. He assumes it's Samantha. She says there's a strange look on his face, and he turns away because she said something to make him unhappy. She says she can't tell if she chose or rejected him, and asks him which would make him unhappy.

Our thoughts:

John: Why would Gabriel be so willing to blindly trust Desmond? You'd think he would have at least scratched out some sort of deal on paper before giving him the information that would lead him to his 'buried treasure.'

Christine: Gabriel also trusted Gerard to kill Samantha for him, and look how that turned out. He does not seem to have a clear understanding of how to make successful deals with unscrupulous people.

John: That was a pretty elaborate unmarked grave/secret path to an underground lair. We won't dwell on the fact that it's rather odd to have built an underground lair into a cemetery... because let's face it, it was a pretty cool new location!

Christine: I thought the very large cross positioned to hold down the coffin was a nice touch, as was the mask, though I couldn't help thinking the concept was borrowed from Bava's Black Sunday

John: Good news Desmond. It looks like you've found the body you were after! I can almost picture him dragging it back to Rose Cottage only to find the head is missing. Methinks Leticia Faye saw with getting rid of it. Of course, I don't think for a second that we've see the last of it.

Christine: I like how our creative cameraman captured Leticia's reflection in the box, thereby putting her head in there as well. With all the talk about whether or not Gerard will be happy if Samantha chooses him or not, it almost seems clear that she is not the loved one of Quentin's who has died, as told in Flora's tarot reading.

Dark Shadows Episode 1096 9/7/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

David walks into the woods. He says he wants to go back to Collinwood. Gerard stands before him, snarling. David agrees to follow him, and asks where Hallie is.

Back in Collinwood, Julia tells Hallie she must tell her where David is. She says she doesn't know. Julia says that she knows she's frightened. Hallie asks to go to her room, and Julia says she'd be at Gerard and Daphne's mercy there. Hallie says she doesn't know anyone with those names. Julia says she heard her talking to one of them, and asks her what they want she and David to do.

She says she hasn't seen any ghosts. Julia says she never said anything about ghosts. She says there's only one way that she would know. She asks if she wants David to be harmed. Hallie sees the ghost of Daphne watching her out the window. Julia asks her who she saw. Hallie tries to run out of the house, but Julia stops her. She demands that Hallie tell her where David is.

Daphne appears in her room. She opens a drawer and removes a drawing of a building. Quentin walks in and she puts the drawing down. He asks if she knows about David, and if she knew who forced him out of the house. He tells her that he didn't tell anyone about her to protect her because he didn't think anyone was in danger. He says if David is in danger, she has to tell him, but Daphne disappears. He picks up the drawing, which seems familiar to him.

David tells Gerard that he's tired as they walk through the woods. Gerard pulls apart some branches, revealing Rose Cottage. David asks him why he's taking him there.

Julia calls Stokes and tells him David is missing, lured out by Gerard. She says she's bringing Hallie to his house. She leaves Hallie with Quentin and goes upstairs to get her things. Hallie doesn't want to go.

Quentin takes her into he drawing room, where he smells lilacs. Daphne appears. Quentin asks her where David is, and doesn't see as Hallie runs out of the house. Quentin chases her but it's too late. When he returns to the drawing room, Daphne is gone.

Hallie follows Daphne through the woods. Hallie asks if they're going where David is, and Daphne smiles and nods.

Quentin tells Julia that he felt a presence in the house, and the next thing he knew, Hallie was gone. Julia asks if there's anything he's not telling her. He says no, and goes to search for Hallie. After he leaves, Julia picks up a handkerchief and smells lilacs.

In Rose Cottage, David asks Gerard why they've come there. He asks if Hallie will be joining them. He asks if he can sit down, and he does, saying he's tired. He immediately falls asleep.

In the woods, Daphne parts the branches, revealing Rose Cottage to Hallie.

David dreams of he and Hallie entering a familiar room. They see life-size dolls that are crying. They hear voices asking if they are going to die, and realizing that they are, so they can live again. Hallie says she doesn't understand, and David agrees. They turn to leave and are blocked by Daphne, who approaches them, arms outstretched.

David wakes from his dream to see Daphne in front of him with outstretched arms. He tells Hallie something terrible is going to happen, and they need to leave. He says he had a dream about death, and they have to run back to Collinwood. Hallie says it's too late, and that they have to do what they want them to. David agrees.

Quentin searches the woods for David and Hallie. He removes the drawing, and recognizes it as the old Magruder Mansion. He wonders why Daphne had it in her room. He wonders if Daphne and Gerard took the children there.

The children follow Gerard into a room that they recognize from their dream. She says everything is the same but the dolls. David says they don't need the dolls any more. Hallie asks him what's going to happen to them.

Daphne sits them down at the table in the chairs the dolls were sitting in. David tells Hallie that it's too late. Gerard takes David's hand and stares at him, and then does the same with Hallie. Gerard then escorts Daphne out of the room and closes the door. David and Hallie sit completely still in their chairs. Hallie says she's frightened, and David says she mustn't be. The ghosts of Tad and Carrie appear, and sit in the same chairs David and Hallie are sitting in. They say goodbye to David and Hallie.

Our thoughts:

John: This might just be my favorite episode since we returned to this version of 1970. Should we assume that Tad and Carrie now live in the physical bodies of David and Hallie? At this point, I don't even care. The ghost activity from the silent Gerard and Daphne was top-notch. I can't wait to see what happens when Quentin stumbles into Rose Cottage!

Christine: This was one of the scariest episodes in the series. Kids must have been having nightmares over the crying mannequins, ghosts with outstretched arms, and hapless adults who have failed to protect them.

John: Daphne's smile and nod to Hallie when she asks if she's being taken where David is reminded me of Anthony James' chauffeur from Dan Curtis' feature adaptation of Robert Marasco's Burnt Offerings! Creepy good stuff!

Christine: Daphne's smile is somehow more threatening than Gerard's surly face.

John: Now, as much as I enjoyed the episode, I would be remiss not to point out that this storyline, and the effort to swap Tad and Carrie with David and Hallie, is the writers equivalent of a Rube Goldberg machine. Did they really need so many weeks, six random, unrelated clues, a mysterious house/doll house that coexist, and a stairway through time... all for this? You'd think they could have done all this just as easily in any one of the empty rooms of Collinwood. And yes, we're still waiting to find out just who all these players are... so maybe, just maybe, things will continue to improve from here!

Christine: The point of not fast tracking the possession of the children was to draw out an impending sense of doom. Julia and Barnabas squandered quite a lot of time they were given to prevent the destruction of Collinwood as clues kept getting ticked off the list. We were left watching helplessly as the children were drawn deeper into Gerard and Daphne's web while the folks who should have been more attentive to them, knowing they were doomed to death, allowed them to slip away. Now we are left wondering if it's too late to save Collinwood, and if the last few clues will be fulfilled by the end of the week. It is only Monday after all, and we've said goodbye to David and Hallie, not knowing if we will ever see these characters again.
