Dark Shadows Episode 1060 7/17/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

The phone rings at the old house, and it's Julia calling to tell Barnabas that she and Quentin will be at least another hour. She says Maggie will be back sooner. Barnabas tells Roxanne that Maggie is coming back and he'll wait for her, and then deal with Stokes.

Maggie is in the woods when Stokes grabs her from behind, covering her mouth so she can't scream. He tells her soon there will be no second Mrs. Collins. She struggles, and he threatens her if she screams. He asks where Quentin is, and she says he's with the police. He then asks if Angelique has been cremated yet, and Maggie doesn't understand what he's saying.

Barnabas looks over Roxanne, draped across a love seat, asleep.

She dreams of Barnabas telling her of another time that he will take her too. She turns around and finds that he's gone. She goes looking for him, calling his name. She comes to the door to Angelique's room, and she sees Barnabas inside, standing in fire, reaching out for her. She wakes. He asks her what's the matter. She says she dreamed he was trapped inside a burning room.

Maggie tells Stokes that he's insane. She asks what he's going to do with her. He tells her that her husband will pay the piper with his life tonight.

Barnabas asks Roxanne what she's thinking about. She says she can't help thinking about her dream. She asks him about the other time, and he assures her that he'll take her there. He explains how time bands work, and how counterparts may be completely different—like Stokes, for example. He suddenly realizes that Maggie should have arrived by now, and leaves to go looking for her.

Quentin and Julia arrive at the old house. Julia introduces Quentin to Roxanne. She asks about Barnabas and Maggie, and Roxanne explains that Maggie never showed up, so Barnabas went looking for her. Quentin is concerned. The phone rings, and Quentin answers it. Stokes says he wasn't expecting him to answer. Stokes extends an invitation to Quentin, telling him that he has Maggie, and he won't harm her until Quentin arrives alone and unarmed. Quentin agrees. Julia tells Quentin that Barnabas will be back soon, and she asks him to wait. Quentin says Stokes told him to come alone, and that's what he's doing.

At Collinwood, Stokes plays with a revolver. Maggie asks if he's going to kill Quentin. Stokes tells her that today there score will be settled. She hears the door and yells for Quentin not to come in. He rushes right past Stokes holding the gun and runs to Maggie. Quentin tells Stokes to let Maggie go. Stokes asks if Angelique's body had been cremated yet, and Quentin confirms that it had. Stokes says he'll finish what Angelique started. Maggie tells Quentin that Stokes is going to kill him. Stokes tells Quentin that he has nothing to gain but the satisfaction of seeing him dead. The doors swing open, and Quentin karate-chops the gun out of Stokes' hand. Barnabas appears with Roxanne, and Stokes tells him that he knows what he is. He grabs Roxanne and threatens to break her neck. He then backs out of the room and locks the door. Barnabas tells Quentin to take care of Maggie, and goes upstairs for Stokes and Roxanne. Stokes sneaks out of the kitchen with Roxanne and a gasoline can, and leads her into the drawing room.

Julia is in the woods when Barnabas appears. He asks about Quentin and Maggie, and she says they're at the old house. He tells her that Stokes is out of his mind.

Stokes tells Roxanne that they'll all be coming back soon, and he has a surprise in store for them. He keeps his hand over her mouth.

Barnabas tells Julia that they'll begin with the West Wing.

In the drawing room, with one hand over Roxanne's mouth, Stokes begins to pour gasoline everywhere. Roxanne ultimately runs off and Stokes' sets the house on fire.

He does the same in the foyer, laughing like a madman. He sees Roxanne at the top of the stairs, and assures her that no one will leave the house alive.

Barnabas tells Julia that if he could find him, he would deal with Stokes, and bring she and Roxanne back to Angelique's room waiting for it to change. They notice that the house is on fire. Julia says the fire must have been started by Stokes. Julia asks how they can get out. Barnabas hears Roxanne calling him, and tries to reach her, unsuccessfully. He screams her name. Suddenly, Julia and Barnabas are back in our time band.

Our thoughts

John: And with that, roll credits—THE END. Is the burning wreckage that is parallel time finally behind us?

Christine: Anything can happen on this show, so we can't be too certain.

John: Nothing cleanses like fire, so let's hope the fire burning through Collinwood will finally rid us of the dead overgrowth that was parallel-time.

Christine: I think the biggest problem with parallel time is that we stayed too long there, just as we did in 1897. Well, that and Barnabas finding another girlfriend.

John: Anyone else waiting for Barnabas to start singing "Roxanne" by The Police at the end of today's episode?

Christine: He would have to travel forward in time about 8 years to do that. Well, this works out great for Julia! But since nothing works out great for Julia, I have a feeling we'll be meeting up with Roxanne's parallel counterpart soon, and how much you wanna bet parallel Roxanne is not all that into Barnabas.

Maggie stands in the dark of the drawing room. As she turns out the light, she asks who will ever live there again. She asks Barnabas he believes Roxanne, and he reluctantly agrees. They step outside the house and he locks the door behind him. Maggie says all the years of Collinwood are over for all of them. They leave together.

Stokes tells Roxanne that she knows what Barnabas is. He says she has the marks of a vampire, and asks her if Barnabas made them. He chokes her, and she admits it's true. He says how it would delight Angelique, but she will know it in good time. Roxanne says she'll never be used by him again. Stokes tells her Barnabas will vanish; pointing out there are many ways to kill vampires. She tries to get away, but he locks her in her room. He tells her that he'll return for her when he needs her.

At the old house, Barnabas tells Maggie she can stay as long as she'd like. She tells him she'll move to the Inn tomorrow to be closer to Quentin. Barnabas suggests that if the autopsy proves that Alexis is Angelique, the inspector might believe the rest of the story. He then says he blames himself for Julia, saying he won't forgive himself for letting her stay. Maggie asks what he means, and he says that he may tell her someday.

Maggie picks up a scarf of Julia's and says it would be the supreme irony for Quentin to be freed by Hoffman. Barnabas sees the scarf and realizes what a fool he has been. He says it belonged to Hoffman. She's dead, but Julia may still be alive. Maggie doesn't understand. Barnabas sends her upstairs to get a bag with Julia's clothes. He leaves to find Roxanne.

Barnabas bursts into Roxanne's, calling for her. She calls out to him from behind a locked door. He lets her out and she tells him that Stokes locked her in, and that he knows all about Barnabas' secret. He tells her that Julia may still be alive, and takes her back to the old house with him.

Barnabas and Roxanne arrive at the old house, and she picks up a brooch from the suitcase Maggie brought downstairs. Barnabas asks if she sees anything. Roxanne says it's not clear yet. She describes a small room without windows. She says it's dark and cold, but there's a woman there. She says it's the same face she saw before, only now she's alive. Barnabas asks her to lead them to her. She says she thinks she can find the room, and gets up and begins walking.

In her dungeon cell, Julia says she must stay awake.

Roxanne leads Barnabas and Maggie to Collinwood. They follow her as she walks through the house.

Julia sleeps on the bed in her cell.

Roxanne leads them into the basement. She tells them that she is very close. Barnabas calls to Julia.

Julia stirs in her bed.

Maggie points out a door in the basement.

Julia opens her eyes, and cries.

Roxanne, Barnabas and Maggie hear the haunting cries of a woman. Barnabas calls to Julia.

Julia hears Barnabas and calls to him. He asks her how they get to her, and she tells him there's a lever somewhere.

Stokes arrives at the old house and peers in through the window.

Back in the old house, Julia takes a drink and tells Barnabas how Angelique stopped coming, and she was sure no one would ever find her. He asks her if Angelique confessed to Bruno's murder, and she says not only did she confess, the doll is upstairs in her room. She says they must get it and bring it to the police, but Barnabas suggests that they let the police find it themselves. The phone rings, and Maggie tells Barnabas that it's the inspector. Barnabas tells him that Julia has been discovered, and receives the confirmation that Alexis was truly Angelique. Maggie is thrilled to hear it, thinking it would mean Quentin would be free. Barnabas says they have to question Julia first. He also says that Quentin has requested that Angelique's remains be cremated, which will mean Roxanne is safe.

Roxanne tells Barnabas that she doesn't want to remember what Claude made her do. He tells her of course, and kisses her. Outside, Stokes watches with a grin on his face.

Stokes sneaks into the old house and confronts Roxanne. She tells him that his plans are going to change soon. She says the police have learned that Alexis is Angelique, and Quentin has instructed them to cremate her body. Stokes doesn't believe it. Roxanne tells him that he'll never bring Angelique back again. Stokes says that Barnabas has done nothing but interfere since he has arrived. If not for him, he would have succeeded, but he won't go quietly. He vows to have his revenge, and comes after Roxanne. She pulls a dagger on him, and Stokes says he'll save her for last, after she watches the dead, disintegrating body of Barnabas Collins.

Roxanne is sleeping when Barnabas comes in. He asks why she's frightened. She tells him that Stokes was there. She says she made the mistake of telling him about Angelique's body, and he's vowed revenge. Barnabas says he'll take care of stokes. He also mentions that Quentin has been cleared, and he and Julia had to stay in town to be with the authorities. The phone rings and it's Julia telling him they'll be at least another hour. She says Maggie will be back sooner. Barnabas tells Roxanne that Maggie is coming back, and he'll wait for her, and then deal with Stokes.

Maggie is in the woods when Stokes grabs her from behind, covering her mouth so she can't scream. He tells her soon there will be no second Mrs. Collins.

Our thoughts

John: Well, at least it only took the opening for Barnabas to realize what a fool he was. And mere minutes later, Julia was free! And seeming perfectly fine—even drinking on an empty stomach after how many days???

Christine: It's a curative! If not for Julia's emotive sobs, she may have ended up a dusty skeleton in the hidden room in the basement.

John: I was a little disappointed that Roxanne didn't let the air out of Stokes with her dagger. I can't imagine a better wrap-up of the character than to have her take out her one-time captor.

Christine: Perhaps they're saving that satisfaction for tomorrow's episode.

John: You can almost see Dan Curtis standing on the edge of the set telling them to wrap this storyline up this week. Boom! Julia is free. Boom! Quentin is exonerated. Boom! Angelique is ashes. And what last-ditch plotline is there to exploit before we tie off this time band in a pretty bow? Why, the umpteenth kidnapping of Maggie, of course!

Christine: Well, now what? That's what I can almost see Dan Curtis saying at this point in time. Let's see what they come up with tomorrow.

Dark Shadows Episode 1058 7/15/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

Barnabas continues to review the Collinwood blueprints. Maggie returns and tells him that Quentin doesn't believe Julia is alive anymore, and has given up. Barnabas assures her they will find Julia. She says she must do what Quentin wants her to do—leave Collinwood forever. She tells Barnabas that they've got to go, but he still believes Julia is there.

In her basement cell, Julia wonders why they haven't found her.

Barnabas doesn't want to leave until he talks to Quentin. Maggie tells him it's no use. Barnabas says that if Julia is there and they leave, she will die. Maggie tells him there's no proof that she's there. Maggie asks if he's seen Roxanne, and he tells her that she was there, but got away from him.

Roxanne wanders through the woods when she runs into Stokes. She tells him Barnabas didn't kill Claude. Stokes asks her if Barnabas told her that he killed Claude. He reminds her that he and Claude were close friends. Stokes brings up her psychic talent, and suggests that if she told the truth about Barnabas it would be most interesting. He says Barnabas is a man with a secret, and asks her if she knows what it is. Stokes says he conquered death and she says he used her to do it, robbing her of her life. She says she's never going to let him use her again, and runs off.

Maggie says she can't understand why Roxanne can't help them. Barnabas says if the police can determine the body is Angelique's, they won't need her. Roxanne watches from outside the drawing room window. Maggie goes to pack, and Barnabas reviews the blueprints once more.

Roxanne appears in the room with him and tells Barnabas that she's afraid when she's not with him. His lips quiver as he eyes her neck. She tells him he's not acting happy to see her. She tells him that Stokes says he has a secret, and asks him what it is. She apologizes, and says she doesn't care what it is. Barnabas tells her that he loves her, but he refuses to hold her. She tells him he's kind and gentle. He says she must go away, and that they can never be together. She asks him why she treats him like a child. He says that is the way it must be. He tells her to go, and she leaves in tears.

In the woods, Roxanne cries Barnabas' name.

Barnabas realizes that he cannot make Roxanne like him. He turns and sees that she has returned. They embrace, and she begs him to never say no to her. She asks him to love her. He hesitates, and then asks her whatever the costs. She says whatever the cost, and he leans in and bites her neck.

Maggie comes downstairs and Barnabas tells her that Roxanne is there, and will go to the police if needed. But first, he sends her upstairs to get something of Julia's. Roxanne calls Barnabas back to her, and tells him that she's his. He tells her that he knows she has psychic powers. She says that is why Claude was interested in her. She says she doesn't like to use them. Barnabas asks her to tell them where they can find their friend, Julia. Maggie returns and Barnabas introduces her to Roxanne. Barnabas takes a scarf from Maggie and gives it to Roxanne. She says she sees a tall woman with a white face, but she won't come in clearly. He asks where she is, and Roxanne says she's lying down... cold... dead! Maggie looks at Barnabas.

Julia wakes from what she thought was a dream and cries for someone to help her.

Roxanne reiterates that the woman is dead. Maggie says she told them what they expected to hear, and says they will close the house tonight. Barnabas agrees. Maggie thanks Roxanne and goes upstairs to pack. Roxanne asks Barnabas what's wrong, and he says what she told him gives him great grief. He says the woman was a true friend. Roxanne says she wants to be alone, now that she's not afraid, knowing she has him. He offers to take her to her house. She tells him that Maggie needs him more than she does. He takes her to the door, and says that if not for finding out his friend Julia was dead, it would be a very happy night. Maggie comes downstairs with a coat and no bags. She asks Barnabas if he thinks she's doing the right thing.

Stokes asks Roxanne what Barnabas' attraction is. He says she must be on his side when the police come. She says she never was and never will be. He grabs her and tells her she will be. He grabs her throat and sees the marks on her neck. He understands what Barnabas' secret is.

Maggie stands in the dark of the drawing room when Barnabas comes in and tells her the car is packed. She asks who will ever live there again. She asks if he believes Roxanne, and he reluctantly agrees. They step outside the house and he locks the door behind him. Maggie says it's over. All the years of Collinwood. They leave together.

In her dungeon cell, Julia sits on her bed.

Our thoughts

John: So what's the urgency to leave Collinwood now? Those responsible for the so-called 'curse' are all gone. If anything, they finally have a reason to stay! Interesting in that today's episode could effectively be the series finale... we'll see where we go from here, and how long it takes us to get back to our time band.

Christine: You know when the door to Collinwood finally gets locked that all is said and done. Does this mean that Barnabas has no intention of returning to his own time and his true Collins relations?

John: Barnabas and Roxanne sure have developed a torrid love affair, considering how little time they've spent together while they were both conscious.

Christine: It's storylines like these that make it very difficult to respect Barnabas.

John: How did Barnabas not think what all of the viewers surely did? That something belonging to parallel-time Hoffman couldn't possibly lead them to his own Julia!

Christine: Barnabas is blinded by love. How long do you suppose it will take him to figure it out?

Angelique hypnotizes Maggie. Angelique tells her to get the gun from the desk drawer, and Maggie does. Angelique tells her to take the gun to Angelique's room and wait for Quentin. She says that when he arrives, she is to shoot him in the heart. She tells her to hurry. Maggie takes the gun and goes upstairs.

Claude tells Roxanne to speak to him. Her lips start to move.

Barnabas tells Angelique that North is going to make Roxanne speak. He says that before she goes, she'll sign a confession clearing Quentin, and she's going to tell him where Julia is.

Maggie stands waiting with the gun in Angelique's room.

Barnabas begs Angelique to sign the confession. She says she came to destroy Quentin, not save him. He says it will give her peace, and she says she doesn't want peace. Barnabas says she only has minutes... or seconds... She says the same is true for Quentin.

Quentin walks in the door to Angelique's room, where he finds Maggie inside pointing a gun at him. He tells her no.

Claude tells Roxanne she will speak, and she says, "I can speak."

Angelique screams and falls to the ground.

Maggie screams and falls to the ground.

Barnabas checks Angelique for a pulse. He leaves her dead body on the floor of the drawing room and goes to the foyer to call Inspector Hamilton and tell him Alexis is dead.

He hangs up and Quentin repeats that Alexis is dead from the top of the stairs. Barnabas tells him to come down so he can hear the whole story. Quentin does, and says that Maggie is responsible. Barnabas says he's wrong. Quentin says she just tried to kill him. He says she was in Angelique's room pointing a gun at him, and Barnabas adds that at the last minute, she fell to the floor unconscious. Quentin asks how he knew. Barnabas says that was Angelique's last act. He says Maggie was under Angelique's spell. He leads Quentin into the the drawing room. He tells Quentin that the body is not Alexis, but Angelique.

Quentin asks how someone can bring the dead back to life. Barnabas says Angelique's father brought her back with the life force of a woman named Roxanne. Quentin says he saw Angelique's body. Barnabas reminds him that it was perfectly preserved. Quentin adds that he burned it, and Barnabas explains that he did so after she changed places with Alexis. Quentin asks if he destroyed Alexis, and Barnabas confirms it. Barnabas says Angelique killed Bruno as well, but refused to sign a confession. Quentin says he has no way of proving he didn't kill Bruno. Barnabas says they can prove it if they find Julia. He sends Quentin upstairs to tend to Maggie, while he waits for the inspector.

The inspector asks Barnabas what caused Angelique's death. Barnabas tells him to sit down, and he'll tell him the whole story.

Claude tells Roxanne to come with him, but she says she's too weak. He says he's waited too long already. He says he regrets making the deal with Stokes. She refuses. He suggests that she's not too weak—it's because she doesn't want to go. She tells him that he'll be back. Claude realizes she means Barnabas. She says he was kind to her, and he wants to know her as she really is. Claude tells her that he loves her, and she says she loves him. He says she doesn't even know him. He says he won't surrender her. He says she's coming with him, and commands her to look at him. He says she will forget Barnabas Collins.

Barnabas tells the inspector that North got Roxanne to speak. The inspector then follows saying that then Angelique suddenly died. He tells Barnabas the story is preposterous. Barnabas says that it's true. The inspector says the search for Quentin will go on. Barnabas offers to take him to see Roxanne and question her. He says he's going to call the station first. Angelique's dead body remains on the floor.

Claude leads Roxanne through the woods. They hide in the shadows as Barnabas and the inspector pass.

Barnabas leads the inspector downstairs into the lab in the basement. It's empty. He asks where the woman is. Barnabas says he must have taken her away. He asks why he would lie, or have all of the equipment. The inspector says he's sticking with reality, which still appears to be the guilt of Quentin.

Quentin sits with Maggie. She slowly comes to, and he tells her not to be frightened. She tells him she knows the truth, and they hug one another. She says she thought he killed Angelique until she found out that Roger had killed her. And Carolyn. And Elizabeth. Quentin is shocked. He says Roger must have been insane. She says the police won't blame him. He says there's still Bruno. She promises him that they'll find a way to prove his innocence. They profess their love for one another and kiss.

She says she can accept things now that she couldn't before. She says she wanted to emulate his first wife, and she knows he'll love another like he loved her. He tells Maggie that he hated Angelique. He said they never had a happy day. He says she was unfaithful, and fond of bragging about it. He wanted to be free of her, and she promised him that he never would be. He says he wasn't sure if he killed her of not on the night of the seance—but he was glad she was dead. When he met Maggie, she was everything he ever wanted in a woman. She tells him that they'll start again.

The inspector walks in on them, and tells him he's taking him into custody, and he won't escape this time.

Barnabas tells Maggie that he hasn't found Julia anywhere. Maggie asks if she might be dead. He says he thinks she's still alive, it's just a question of where. She asks about Roxanne, and he says he's going to check Stokes house. He says they have to find a way to clear Quentin. Maggie thanks him for everything.

Barnabas searches the woods and finds Claude North dead, stabbed with his own dagger. He wonders if Roxanne is dead, too.

Our thoughts

John: Well, it didn't take a mind reader to figure out that Angelique's death would likely end the spell on Maggie. Though I didn't quite expect Barnabas to tell the inspector the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Do you think he tried to explain parallel time to him, too? I'm surprised the inspector didn't lock Barnabas up as well! Do you think anyone knows that Roger is dead, too?

Christine: That's a good question. Maggie and Quentin should have been tripping over Roger's corpse in Angelique's room. She didn't seem well enough to move his body. Perhaps the room changed and transported his corpse to the other time band.

John: So about this whole Claude/Roxanne McGuffin... I was really hoping we'd get an answer to why she would even consider going back to the man who sold her out to someone for her life force. It sure seems like an odd thing to do with a woman you claim to love. Of course, is that any less ridiculous than her falling in love with Barnabas? I guess not.

Christine: This is too much! Well, since we don't have many characters left alive in parallel time, I'm guessing Stokes is the one responsible for planting the dagger in North's back, and he now has Roxanne, who's been wearing the same blue nightgown for who knows how long. Perhaps he's going to attempt to resurrect Angelique.

John: It's certainly worth noting that Barnabas chose to look for Roxanne rather than continue the search for Julia... the one who could more likely help Quentin. If that's not the ultimate slap in the face, I don't know what is. Something tells me that once reunited, Julia will still be pining for her vampire beau.

Christine: I really hate when the writers make Barnabas act like such an idiot. Julia's a goner.
