Dark Shadows Episode 1087 8/25/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Gerard approaches David outside his bedroom, and follows him as he backs in. Gerard closes the door behind him. David asks who he is, pointing out that he saw him in his dream. Gerard smiles at him. He approaches David, who screams.

Julia hears David scream and comes into his room. He's alone. She says that he's been in the room—she says she can sense it. David asks her who has been in the room, and she asks David to tell her. She says he's the only one in the room. She asks why he screamed. He says he had a nightmare. She asks him to tell her about it, and he starts to make up a story. She tells him not to lie to her. She asks if there was man in his dream with dark hair and cold, evil eyes. He says there was nobody like that in his dream. He makes up a dream about soldiers and airplanes bombing Collinwood. Julia says it's important that she know if anything unusual is going on. He says the unusual things in Collinwood are her, and Barnabas, and Quentin. She says she'll leave him alone, and says that she hopes he doesn't have another nightmare. After she's gone, he says he didn't tell her anything, because he knows he wouldn't want him to.

Quentin asks Daphne what's happening in the house. He asks her why it's taken so long for her to come to him. She kisses him, but doesn't speak. Quentin is unaware that Gerard is in the room, watching them. Daphne is alarmed, and Quentin asks her what's wrong. She goes to the door and opens it for him to leave. He tells her that she's going to answer his questions. He tells her he'll give her one more chance, and leaves the room. After he's gone, Gerard gives her a quill to write a note.

Julia finds Shaw in the drawing room. She asks if he discovered who the stranger was, and he tells her that if he does, he'll tell Mrs. Stoddard. Julia says she's been reading up on him. She says she got some articles on him, saying he's had a great deal of publicity. She asks why he's planning to stay in Collinsport. He points out that he hardly knows her, and asks why he should tell her. He asks if he needs her permission to stay in Collinsport. She says she'd welcome him if he used his talent to help them. She reminds him how he lied about the tune he played on the piano. He asks if it's possible that she's mistaken, and she says that the song plays when spirits who want to destroy Collinwood are present. She says the children will be destroyed if he doesn't help them. Julia says that if he said one word, Elizabeth would take the children from the house. He walks out on her, and runs into David in the foyer. David asks to speak to him.

In David's room, Shaw asks if David was worried about the stranger. David says he thinks the others all believe in horoscopes. Shaw asks him if he met a stranger. David says that he is the only stranger he met, and that was today, not yesterday. He asks Shaw if something terrible is going to happen today. He asks if he meant everything he told his aunt, and Shaw says he did. He leaves David alone in his room.

Gerard watches Quentin from outside the drawing room. Quentin reads a note from Daphne that says she will tell him all tonight at midnight in her room. Julia comes downstairs to study Elizabeth's horoscope. They discuss Shaw, and she says she's trying to get his help. She tells Quentin that she and Barnabas would be alone without him. Quentin reminds her that he's not very dependable. She asks if he's seen David, and he says no. She says she's going to check on him.

Julia looks at the model ship in David's bedroom when he comes in. He asks what she's doing and says he has a right to privacy. He tells her she can leave, and that she won't be invited back. She leaves.

In Daphne's room, Gerard prepares a rope with which he likely plans to kill Quentin.

David finds Julia in the drawing room, and asks her if she's still looking for Rose Cottage. She says she is. He apologizes for speaking to her the way he did before. She apologizes for going into his room while he wasn't there. She goes upstairs with him to get Elizabeth's horoscope, which she left in his room.

Daphne shakes her head no, and Gerard takes her head and kisses her.

Quentin watches the clock, a few minutes before midnight. Julia comes into the drawing room and and says the horoscope says that tomorrow an enemy will become a friend. She invites him to have a drink, but he refuses, heading upstairs.

At the stroke of midnight, Quentin goes to Daphne's room. He looks for her, bu doesn't see her. He calls for her to appear. Gerard sneaks up behind him with a rope.

Our thoughts:

John: Wow! David sure hit Julia with the full teen angst today! Even he has to admit that his made up dream story about planes bombing Collinwood wasn't likely to convince anyone.

Christine: With the Vietnam War going on, and the Kent State shootings happening just 3 months prior, I think his made-up dream would have been easily accepted at the time.

John: I love how Quentin tries to have a rational discussion with Daphne's ghost, considering that he's never heard her speak a word. Knowing Quentin, you'd almost expect him to prefer a woman who doesn't speak, and just kisses him...

Christine: Now you've hit on the source of his infatuation! It all makes sense now!

John: Nice to see Gerard finally do something of substance, even if we all know that his plan to kill Quentin will be foiled tomorrow. The only question is who will stop him—Daphne? Julia? Barnabas? The children?

Christine: I really wish we could count on Julia to put the smack down on anyone who dares hurl a sexist statement her way. It's one thing when Barnabas is the one responsible, but when a leather pants clad, jewelry laden hipster occultist has the audacity to say, "I've seen women like you before. Hysterical women who imagine ghosts all over the place when there are none," then I would expect a more fiery retort from her, especially when there are ghosts all over the place at Collinwood!

Dark Shadows Episode 1082 8/18/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Barnabas calls to Shaw as a woman enters who he recognizes as Roxanne! She asks him if they no one another and he's speechless. She asks who he is, and he tells her that he's Barnabas. He mentions that he knew someone that looked like her named Roxanne Drew. She's fascinated, because that's her name, too. She asks him about his Roxanne, and she says she sounds like an astral twin that Sebastian told her about. She says she wants to meet his Roxanne, and he says it won't be possible, but she makes up for the fact that she's not there.

She asks him if he's waiting to see Sebastian, and he tells her that he's meditating. Barnabas asks if she'll help him convince Sebastian to complete his cousin's horoscope. She says he won't do it. He asks if she'll finish it, and she explains that it wouldn't be right. He tells her that he'd like to see her again to discuss astral twins. He invites her to a late dinner, and she says she'll meet him at 10pm.

Hallie finds Julia in the drawing room, looking at old tax records. Julia says they're tax records from 1840, and she's researching Rose Cottage. Hallie asks her why it's so important to find. She says she's working on a book on Collins history. Hallie asks her if that's the only reason, and Julia asks her what other reason there could be. Hallie sees Daphne in the room, who beckons Hallie to follow her. She wishes Julia good luck and leaves, following Daphne.

David finds the Java Queen boat in his room again. Hallie comes in and he says he thinks it's a model of a real ship. She says he's seen it in the harbor. He realizes that she's Carrie now. She tells him she's always Carrie. She laughs and says that downstairs, Julia's trying to find Rose Cottage, but she never will. David asks her why, and she says he knows. He tries to get her to tell him, and then calls her Hallie. It upsets her. He shakes her, and she asks him why he was doing that. He tells her that she's been near the playroom again. She says she wasn't; that she was in the drawing room and saw Daphne. From there she doesn't remember. David says they may have to do what Daphne says. Hallie is concerned that they'll be Carrie and Tad all the time.

Julia finishes her work as the phone rings. She answers it, and it's a call for Barnabas. The woman says it's Roxanne Drew. Julia tells her it's Julia, and Roxanne explains that she must have her confused with the other Roxanne. She leaves a message that she won't be available to have supper with Barnabas. After she hangs up, Barnabas arrives at Collinwood and tells her the most incredible thing has happened. He mentions Roxanne, and Julia says she just called to cancel their dinner arrangement. Barnabas assumes Shaw is to blame. Barnabas assures Julia that it's his Roxanne. Julia asks him if he remembers her from parallel time, and says she doesn't know this Roxanne. He is adamant that she is his Roxanne. Julia says they'll have to wait and find out.

David tells Hallie they could research who owned the Java Queen. She smells lilacs, and then they see Daphne in the room. David asks if she could tell them about the Java Queen and Rose Cottage. He asks if they'll ever find out about it, and Daphne smiles and nods. David asks if she'll show them Rose Cottage now, and she shakes her head no. Daphne takes out David's pajamas and turns down his bed. Hallie says it's as if they're going to become Tad and Carrie. He notices that Daphne has disappeared.

Roxanne is just chilling at Sebastian's when Barnabas arrives to see her. She assumes that he didn't get her message. He tells her that he did, and hoped to change her mind. She doesn't. He asks her if she's available the next night, or the following. He finally asks when she's next available, and she doesn't respond. He finally gets it. She explains that she's not free to go out much, and offers her hand, which he kisses. He tells her that they shall see each other again.

David is sleeping, and dreams of Hallie. She says they're at a birthday party at Rose Cottage. They go into a room where mannequins of Tad and Carrie are sitting at a table. Hallie tells him it's Gerard's party. David asks who Gerard is. Hallie tells him to sit down and when he does, they see Daphne outside the window, laughing. It appears that she's looking in on them in a doll's house. David wakes up.

David finds Hallie outside the playroom, and she describes the same dream. They go inside and find a doll house—which looks like the room where they were in the shared dream.

Our thoughts:

John: An astral twin? Really? Four years in, I'm willing to accept just about anything Dark Shadows throws our way, but isn't it a bit of a stretch to assume that an astral twin would also have the same name? Do you think Roxanne knew where she was supposed to meet Barnabas by reading her horoscope? Or should he have gotten the message when she agreed to meet him without specifying a destination, that she was never planning to be there?

Christine: I think the look on her face should have been enough for him to get the message. He might also consider that she's bringing groceries to Sebastian's hip pad because she's shacked up there with him and they've got a thing going on.

John: Poor Julia. She's been too busy to spend any time hitting on Barnabas, and now the competition is back in town. And he's pretty much demonstrated that he's blinded by love, once again...

Christine: It's got to be frustrating watching him chase after another pretty, young thing that has no interest in him. Barnabas really needs to take a look in the mirror. Oh, wait... well, that explains everything.

John: The doll house dream sequence was pretty cool... Do you think that Rose Cottage is the doll house itself? Sadly, I'm expecting that once all of the things referenced in the Catastro-tracker have been identified, we'll confirm that they were all seemingly intricate, yet with no substance, like a Damon Lindelof screenplay.

Christine: Scary mannequins! Yes, it would seem the doll house is the Rose Cottage from their dream, but we can wait to see if we get definite confirmation tomorrow before we check it off. It seems that each clue that gets ticked off the list indicates a deepening possession of the children, reaching a point of no return once they've all been checked off.

Dark Shadows Episode 1079 8/13/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

In the cemetery, Quentin finds Daphne. He tells her that she's beautiful, and they embrace. Daphne raises a knife behind his back. He tells her that he feels as if he's known her all his life. She lowers the knife and turns from him. He says he'll do anything to put her at peace. She disappears. He calls for her to come back. He finds a knife on the ground near his feet.

David goes into Hallie's room, and sees her wearing the dress she said she was going to put in the attic. She asks him if something has happened, and he tells her that he found clothes from the same period on his bed. She asks him to put them on, saying that she wants him to, and the woman does, too. He says he doesn't want to, and Hallie runs out of the room, saying he doesn't want to make her happy.

Quentin returns to Collinwood, and Julia asks him about the picnic he went on. She points out the picnic was mentioned in Carolyn's note. She asks if anything happened, and he says no. She tells him that she still feels Gerard's presence. Quentin asks her if she feels anything else. She says no, but expresses concern that they're getting closer to the destruction of Collinwood. Quentin suggests that they hold an exorcism tonight.

David finds Hallie in the playroom. He tells her that she shouldn't have come there. She says she's going to be punished. She says she went to Gerard's ship today, where she saw him kiss Daphne in his cabin, and now they're both angry with her. He calls her Hallie, and she reiterates that Hallie is not her name. Daphne enters the room, and David says they should leave. Hallie tells Daphne that she didn't mean to see them. She says if she doesn't believe her, to go ahead and punish her. David tells Daphne to leave Hallie alone, but Hallie thanks Daphne for believing her. Daphne extends her hand to David.

Quentin comes into the foyer with a tree branch. Julia asks if they should tell Barnabas, and he says that they don't need him. He says if the ceremony is a success, there could be a great disturbance in the house before it is over. They step outside, and Quentin, addressing no one in particular, suggests the time has come. He begins an incantation.

David tells Hallie that he doesn't want to take Daphne's hand. She asks if he wants to know all about Gerard and his ship, and David admits that he does. She tells him to take Daphne's hand.

Quentin continues his exorcism...

David reaches for Daphne's hand, but she withdraws it at the last minute, and disappears. Hallie says there is someone else present who is going to punish them. David tells her they're the only ones there, but Hallie screams and collapses.

Quentin continues his exorcism, demanding the things cast thyselves back into the outer darkness from whence thee came, in the name of the lord... He tells Julia to wait there, and goes back into the house. He sees Daphne at the top of the stairs.

Hallie comes to and says she hurt her arm. She asks him what she's doing in the dress. He says he doesn't know. He says they have to figure out where the room came from, and who Daphne and Gerard are. He takes her downstairs to see Julia.

Julia comes into the house and finds Quentin standing alone in the dark. She asks him what's wrong. He says there's nothing he can do. He expected some reaction from the ceremony. He asks her if there are spirits at large in the house, he doesn't think they mean anyone any harm. Julia asks him why he stopped the ceremony when David comes downstairs with Hallie, wearing a contemporary dress. He says she hurt her arm, and they want to be sure it isn't broken. She sends them into the drawing room, and tells Quentin that the spirits were aware when he did the exorcism, and caused Hallie's accident. He tries to convince her that it's a coincidence. She says she has no proof, but a strong conviction that she's right and he's wrong.

Later David and Hallie return to the playroom. She asks why they had to come back. He tells her there's a way to find out what they want to know. He tells her they're going to hold a séance. He lights a candle and they sit at a table together. David calls to the spirits who know about the playroom. They hear young voices calling to let them live.

Our thoughts:

John: What the hell was going on with Quentin's divining rod? And where did he get it, the kitchen? I'm glad we don't have an exorcism tracker, as today's would have to be considered an embarrassment to the field.

Christine: Oh, I've got you covered on the exorcism tracking. The last time an exorcism was performed was by Professor Stokes in Episode 693 in an attempt to rid the house of Quentin's ghost, so it is quite funny that Quentin took it upon himself to use what is likely the same forked branch to conduct an exorcism today. Prior to that, Reverend Trask also used a forked branch in Episode 400 to conduct an exorcism, though he had a little more flair and lit his on fire.

John: Ah, Julia. Gotta love her conviction! And also, her making an excuse for Barnabas, who clearly had the day off today, and wouldn't be available to participate in Quentin's sham-exorcism.

Christine: Where the heck is Barnabas? Did someone lock him in his coffin again? I think the catastrophe happened at Collinwood because both he and Julia kept taking days off when they needed to be using the clues to prevent the calamity.

John: We interrupt our Catastro-tracker to bring back our séance tracker! And our first fully pre-teen séance at that! Or teen séance? Do you think that David and Hallie will end the week as themselves, or as Tad and Carrie?

Christine: When trackers collide! Weren't David and Amy pre-teens when they conducted a séance in Episode 640? If Amy were around, she certainly would have reminded David about what happened the last time they got involved with evil spirits in the house. It seems likely that we won't be seeing David and Hallie next week as their counterparts sound ready to step in.

Dark Shadows Episode 1078 8/12/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

David reviews a photograph from the picnic when Quentin comes in. David asks if he sees a face in the background watching them. Quentin says he sees it, but it appears to be an optical illusion.

Barnabas and Julia arrive at Collinwood. Julia feels the presence of Gerard Stiles. Barnabas sends her to the drawing room, and says he'll tell Elizabeth that they all need to leave the house. Julia says the only proof they have is her sense of his presence. She tells him that Hallie is with her uncle, so he should check on David and Quentin.

Quentin searches for something in Daphne's room, and finds a cameo portrait labeled Gerard Stiles. He wonders what they meant to each other. He then finds her diary. He opens it when David walks in.

David says he saw a light in the room from outside and wondered who it was. He asks Quentin what he's doing in the West Wing. He says he's helping Julia with the family history. David asks whose room they're in, and Quentin says they'll probably never know. After they leave, Daphne appears in the room, smiling.

Barnabas stops by David's room to see him, but it's empty. He sees the model ship, and recognizes it from the playroom. David finds him in the room, and Barnabas asks him where he got the boat. He says he found it in the attic yesterday. Barnabas points out that it's in very good condition for something stored in the attic. Barnabas quizzes David to see if he's had any excitement over the summer.

After he leaves, David returns to his closet/darkroom.

Quentin reads from Daphne's diary. He finds an entry where she threatens to kill someone. Julia walks in, and Quentin asks what she's found out about Daphne. She says that she was a governess in 1840 who died in 1841. Barnabas joins them, and Julia asks if David has seen anything strange. He suggests that he might have, but he's not telling. Julia says that their only hope is that something happens that will prove they're telling the truth. Barnabas asks Quentin if he would conceal anything from them, and he says of course not. Barnabas accuses him of concealing something. Quentin sees Daphne standing outside the window, and stops before he says anything. He apologizes and then walks out of the room. Julia suggests that Quentin wouldn't lie if it put the children at risk. Barnabas proposes a seance, but Julia says it's too dangerous.

Quentin finds David, and warns him that there are some loose boards in the West Wing, and he shouldn't spend any more time there. David says he understands. He goes into his room and finds period clothing laid out on his bed. He puts the clothes in a drawer and closes it.

He returns to his darkroom to get a photo, and sees a man's face in the background. He turns to see Daphne in his room. He asks if she brought him the clothes. He shows her the man in the photo and asks who he is. She smiles. David asks what he wants, and who he is. He hears Barnabas and Julia coming. Daphne disappears, and he jumps into bed, fully dressed. When they see him, they assume he's asleep and leave. Once they're gone, David gets out of bed and examines the photo.

Quentin returns to Daphne's room, begging for her to appear. He says he didn't tell Barnabas and Julia about her. Daphne appears. He asks her about the terrible things that Barnabas and Julia have predicted. He begs her to answer. She turns to leave the room, and beckons for him to follow.

David has enlarged the picture of the man behind Maggie and Quentin at the picnic.

Quentin comes downstairs. The doors open on their own, and he steps outside. They close behind him.  In the cemetery, he finds Daphne. They embrace, and Daphne raises a knife behind his back.

Our thoughts:

John: Do you think the face in the photo is the same one David showed Quentin, which he described as an optical illusion? Or was it a different shot? Because the face we saw in the photo was clearly no optical illusion!

Christine: I think David went into his darkroom and enlarged the photo to see if it was really a face or an optical illusion as Quentin thought. We are supposed to believe that it became clear upon enlargement, though I challenge you to find it in the original photo that Carolyn had in 1995.
John: Do you think David's brand-new 1840 wardrobe was hanging on a vintage 1840s-era hanger? It sure was nice of Daphne(?) to leave it for him, and a real shame that after she went to the trouble of putting it on a hanger, he just threw it in a drawer!

Christine: Why would Julia think it would be hard to sell Elizabeth on the idea that a malevolent ghost threatened the children, when they all moved out of the house once before because of a malevolent ghost threatening the children? Really!

John: According to her diary, it would appear that Daphne might have a killing streak. But we all know well and good that even if she was responsible for Stiles' death, it's not like she's actually going to do in Quentin tomorrow...

Christine: No, but a murder is coming up next in Carolyn's clues, so perhaps she'll be using that knife on someone else. I hate whenever our super sleuths, B&J, act like they don't have a clue. With two clues checked off on the Catastro-tracker, how can they not realize that Quentin is already under the influence of Daphne, especially after Barnabas found the playroom ship in David's room? Collinwood is doomed.
