Dark Shadows Episode 424 - 2/8/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

A bat approaches Suki outside the old house, and she runs back inside. The bat changes to Barnabas, who approaches her. He tells her it's too late for mercy, and clutches her throat. Nathan approaches the old house and calls to Suki. Barnabas drops her body. Nathan bursts in to find Suki lying on the ground. He asks who was responsible, and before collapsing, she says, "Barnabas Collins."

Joshua comes downstairs when Nathan bursts in. Joshua asks if he found Josette and Nathan tells him that he heard a woman screaming in the old house. By the time he got there, he found his sister dead—strangled.

In the old house, Joshua looks at the portrait of Josette. Nathan returns to tell him he covered his sister's body with a sheet. Joshua asks what she could have been doing at the old house. Nathan says he's confused by the fact that the last thing she said was Barnabas' name. Nathan tells Joshua that the prior night, he saw a figure in the woods that he was sure was Barnabas. Joshua tells him that he knows that Barnabas is in England.

Joshua asks Nathan if there was any ill feeling towards his sister. He says that he doesn't seem to show much grief despite having just found her dead body. As they prepare to search the house, they hear someone upstairs. It's Josette. She comes downstairs, calls for Barnabas, and collapses.

In the drawing room of the new house, Naomi sits by the fire. Millicent joins her and asks if there's any word on Josette. She says there is none. Millicent then asks if she has seen Nathan's sister, as she wasn't in her room. They hear Joshua calling from the foyer, and go to see he and Nathan leading Josette into the house. Joshua tells Nathan to get the constable. Millicent asks Nathan about Suki, and he tells her that she was strangled at the old house.

Naomi and Joshua get Josette into her bed upstairs. Naomi notices two marks on her neck.

Millicent checks in on Josette, and asks Naomi if she heard about Nathan's sister. Naomi says she had. Millicent tells her she wrote a letter to Suki's aunt in Boston, and Naomi says she can have a servant deliver it.

She says she'll see if she can find the address in Suki's room, and Joshua returns with smelling salts. Naomi shows him the wound on Josette's neck, which he recognizes as similar to the one Barnabas had shortly before his death.

Millicent goes downstairs with a box from Suki's room. Nathan enters, and asks if he can have a drink. She says yes, and tells him she'd like him to read a letter she's written to their aunt. She opens the box from Suki's room, and Nathan tells her she doesn't need to look up the address. He makes up an address, which Millicent writes on the envelope. She then sees a marriage certificate, and tells him that she has to write another letter to her husband. He tries to stop her, but she reads his name on the certificate. He tries to explain, but she won't hear it, and sobs as she runs outside.

Joshua and Naomi come downstairs. He asks when the Countess left. He says she mentioned seeing a book with the history of the Collins family, which says that Josette is supposed to die by her own hand tomorrow. Naomi tells him she's aware of Vicki's book, and he tells her that if they can keep Josette alive through tomorrow, perhaps she'll be safe.

Josette wakes up and says that tomorrow she'll belong to Barnabas forever.

Our thoughts

John: I must admit, I wasn't quite expecting Suki to shuffle off this mortal coil quite so quickly. Though I am looking forward to Nathan being accused of her murder, considering he had both the motive and opportunity. His pal Barnabas really did him a favor!

Christine: After having Jason McGuire hanging around for four months to torment Liz, we could hardly expect poor Suki to last only a week.

John: I'm surprised Millicent was so nosy, going through Suki's papers when her brother was right there, but I guess someone had to find out about their secret, and fast!

Christine: I agree it wasn't quite in her character to be so forceful with Nathan, but sometimes it's so much more satisfying to not have these things drag on. It looks like Nathan may find himself in a cell next to Vicki.

John: Did Kathryn Leigh Scott have the easiest job on television, or what? We should have tracked how often she appears bedridden!

Christine: I was thinking of how difficult it must be not to laugh while people are hovering over you and inspecting your neck. Shame on you for deliberately goading me into looking up all the shots of KLS in bed.

Dark Shadows Episode 423 - 2/7/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Joshua returns to the house, looking distraught. The Countess finds him in the drawing room and asks him to tell Josette she needs to leave Collinwood. Joshua tells the Countess that he went to where they laid Barnabas to rest. He doesn't know how the ring they buried him with is in Josette's possession. He tells her that he opened Barnabas' coffin, and it was empty. She says she doesn't understand. He says that someone must have robbed his grave. He says that only two servants knew where they buried him, as well as Ben Stokes. The Countess says that still doesn't explain how Josette ended up with the ring. Miss Forbes interrupts them, and asks if his niece was alright. She says that she heard Josette, who sounded distressed, calling several times for Baranabas.

Joshua has Riggs unlock the door to Josette's room. He and the Countess enter, and they find Josette is gone. Joshua tells Riggs to round up a search party. The Countess asks how she could have gotten out of the room, and he shows her the secret panel. Joshua says only two others knew about the passage, and they are both dead; Jeremiah and Barnabas.

There's a knock at the front door, and Suki Forbes answers it. It's Nathan. She invites him in. They go into the drawing room, and he once again asks her how much she wants. She tells him $5000 in gold. He tells her he doesn't have it, and she says she won't accept any less. She tells him if he refuses, she'll show Millicent her marriage license. He tells her that if she does, she'll get nothing from him. The Countess bursts in and asks for Nathan's help in searching for Josette. After she leaves, Nathan tells Suki to go to the old house, and says that he'll meet her there to discuss her terms for leaving. After she leaves, Joshua comes in and asks him to go into town and ask the constable to arrange a search party for Josette.

Suki goes to the old house and lets herself in. Inside, she is confronted by Barnabas. He asks who she is, and what she wants. She tells him her name, and explains she's Nathan's sister. She says that Nathan arranged to meet her at the old house. Barnabas says he knows she is wife, not his sister. He asks why she is at Collinwood pretending to be someone she is not. He tells her that if she wants to live, she must leave Collinwood immediately, and never tell anyone what she has seen. She tells him that she knows exactly who he is: Barnabas. Just like she saw in the portrait. She notices Josette's coat, and when she looks up, Barnabas is gone. She decides to leave, and outside she is approached by a giant bat. She goes back inside and closes the door behind her. The bat enters the house, and turns into Barnabas. He grabs her throat and she screams.

Outside, Nathan hears her screams.

Barnabas lets Suki's body fall to the ground. Nathan bursts in to find Suki on the ground. He asks who was responsible, and before collapsing, she says Barnabas.

Our thoughts

John: Thank you Joshua, for the explanation on the secret panels in Collinwood!

Christine: It's about time! He said they were built as a safeguard during the war, but I think Joshua was sneaking mistresses into Collinwood.

John: Surprisingly, Barnabas didn't put the bite on Suki. One must wonder if he was doing her a favor in that he knew she was Nathan's wife.

Christine: Maybe he just wasn't hungry. I'm not sure I understand how she was able to speak Barnabas' name after being strangled to death.

John:  Nice transition from the (bad) bat to Barnabas. Almost passing for an onscreen transformation. Almost.

Christine: It was a nice effect, though I couldn't figure out why he decided to transform into a bat and fly around willy-nilly in the first place. Why didn't he just take care of her when she confirmed who he was, instead of flapping around outside while she proceeded to narrate her own fearful predicament? Barnabas is developing showmanship.

Dark Shadows Episode 420 - 2/2/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Millicent checks in on Josette, who tells her that she feels Barnabas is somewhere close, not realizing that he's lurking outside of her window.

Barnabas waits for Josette to return to the window so he can see her face one last time.

Josette congratulates Millicent on her upcoming nuptials, and she explains that she still has to wait and see if cousin Joshua approves. Millicent sees Nathan out the window and goes downstairs to greet him. Josette gets back into bed.

Nathan knocks on the front door, and Millicent comes downstairs to let him in. He mentions that he saw a man near the woods as he was coming up the road. He would swear it was Barnabas Collins. Millicent says that Josette said she thought she saw Barnabas yesterday, and Nathan is sure that it must have been him. He asks if Millicent has thought about the date he proposed for the wedding. Millicent says she's been too busy comforting Josette. Nathan is confident that Josette will be just fine. Millicent explains that men love many women, but women only fall in love once. He tells her that he hasn't been in love until now. There's another knock at the door, and Millicent goes to answer it.

Nathan's wife Suki charges in, expressing excitement to see him. Suki introduces herself as Suki Forbes to Millicent, and she's shocked until she adds that Nathan must have told her he has a sister. Nathan plays along with the ruse, but is obviously anxious.

Suki is shocked to see Barnabas at the window, and when the others look he's gone.

Nathan asks Millicent to make some tea, and she leaves to do that. He asks Suki what her game is. He reminds her she gave him his word, and she says that was until he found out what his game was.

He tells her it's not what she thinks it is. Suki says she's sure he's in love with Millicent's money. He asks how much she wants, and says he'll give it to her provided that she leaves now.

She tells him that Millicent may not have her family's blessing yet, and she says that he doesn't yet have hers. Millicent comes back in with tea, and tells Suki that she and Nathan are planning to be married.

Barnabas continues to loiter outside Josette's window, waiting for her to make an appearance. He realizes that if she doesn't, he will have to go to her.

Josette sees a bat outside her window. Then Barnabas appears inside her room. He says he had to see her one more time. She's excited to see him, but doesn't understand him. She says she cannot leave Collinwood having seen him again. He begs her to go away and forget him. She says he doesn't mean it, or he wouldn't have come back. She tells him that nothing can keep them apart. She asks him to take her with him. She hugs him, and he leans in to bite her neck.

Our thoughts

John: Shouldn't folks in Collinwood be more upset about Sarah's death?

Christine: Sarah who? We're on to the next tragedy already. Everyone's a little too wrapped up in their own storyline to remember a little girl just died.

John: She may be a schemer, but I'm getting the sense that Suki Forbes is no Jason McGuire.

Christine: Nathan Forbes had a variety of amusing expressions in today's episode.

John: It just dawned on me that we don't know when Barnabas' portrait was painted. Unless it's already been finished and sitting in storage in Collinwood, that would mean it was done after he became a vampire. It will be interesting to see if that gets resolved before we're out of 1795.

Christine: Perhaps he and Jeremiah had their portraits done at the same time and are yet to be hung, what with the chaos surrounding the move to Collinwood. Great Friday cliffhanger! Barnabas appears to be really chowing down on Josette's neck this time. Will she become his vampire bride after all? She did ask for it, though Barnabas could have at least clued her in as to what it would entail.
