Barnabas and Will arrive at Stokes' home. Will assures Barnabas that Stokes is at the Eagle, and will be there until closing. Will tells him there's someone else in the room with them. He hears Hoffman's voice, saying she won't let them enter. Will thinks it's her ghost speaking to them. Barnabas thinks she's in the room with them, and Barnabas says it's just her spirit. He offers to help her. He says she cannot rest because her mistress is not at rest. He tells her that she can rest with Angelique if they just let them into the room. They hear her whimpering cries, which fade away. Barnabas asks Will if he still feels the presence, and he says no. Barnabas tells Will to follow him. They go into the room with the woman's body.

Angelexis is sitting by the fire when Amy comes downstairs. She asks where Maggie is, and then says she wants to see Quentin. Angelexis says they're not there. Amy says she saw someone that looked like Quentin creeping into a back window. Angelexis asks why he would do that. Amy says she heard a man by her door. Angelexis says that Quentin isn't there, and neither is Barnabas.

Barnabas lifts the sheet.

Angelexis starts to feel faint. Amy asks her what's wrong. She says nothing is wrong.

Will asks if he's sure this woman is alive. Barnabas asks him to check Stokes' books for any records on her.

Angelexis tells Amy to go back to bed. Amy is worried about her. She tells Amy to go back to bed and runs out of the house. Amy declares that she's not afraid, and walks back upstairs. She hears a door shut. She unlocks a door and enters a room.

Angelique arrives at her father's home. He's not there, but she is shocked to find the woman's body is gone.

Julia tells Barnabas that he should have listened to her. She asks to speak to Barnabas alone, and Will leaves them. Barnabas says he knows she's against it, but it's done now. She tells him it's just beginning. There's a knock at the door. Julia asks who he thinks it is.

Will opens the door to find Angelexis. She asks to see Barnabas. Will says that she doesn't know Barnabas and that one never knows when he's going to be there. Will tells her he thinks he has a girl somewhere, and Angelexis says that's a girl she'd like to meet. He says Barnabas is very secretive.

Julia and Barnabas listen from the basement as Will tries to get rid of Angelexis. She says she assumed he was always at the old house, since they never see him during the day. She asks Will why he's so nervous. She then asks him if it's the day he normally meets her father at the Eagle. He tells her he's trying to turn over a new leaf, and begin writing again. She pulls a book off the shelf near the secret panel. Will momentarily freaks out and tells her that everyone left him alone so that he could work on his new project. She asks him not to tell Barnabas she was there, saying she wants to surprise him.

Barnabas tells Julia that she would be right to say she told him so. Julia says she might as well start work. Barnabas is surprised that she changed her mind. He thanks her.

Amy is searching in the locked room. She thinks Daniel won't believe she was exploring on her own. She hears footsteps, and hides.

Angelique tells Julia she's never around when she needs her. Julia says the body has moved before, and Angelique tells her that she's always felt it before. She asks her to go to her father at the Eagle and bring him back to the cabin. She says she needs to figure out how Barnabas found the body. When Julia says she doesn't think he does, Angelique says she naive, and more trusting than she's ever been before.

Amy continues exploring, opening a door to another room and stepping inside. She finds the Bruno voodoo doll.

Barnabas tells Will that they just need to show Quentin the body in the room to prove that Alexis is Angelique. He adds that they need to find him tonight, and sends Will to go look for him.

Julia tells Angelique that her father was incoherent. Angelique says she must have the girl, or everything could end just like that. She asks what Barnabas' choices are. Julia suggests that someone else might have taken her. Angelique says that he is her enemy, but she can't understand why he hasn't destroyed her already.

Will asks Amy where she got the voodoo doll. She says she got it in the tower room in the west wing. He tells her to go to bed, and she says there's someone upstairs. He offers to take her up to her room.

Barnabas tells Julia she shouldn't have come to see him. Julia says Angelique is certain he has the girl, and she will stop at nothing to destroy him. He says they must both be careful.

As he looks for Quentin in Collinwood, Will says he must be careful, because Maggie says he's gone mad. He thinks Quentin will know he wants to help him. He then wonders if Angelique has somehow changed Quentin. He searches the tower room in the West Wing, and finds a tie. He hears footsteps, and the door begins to open.

Our thoughts

John: Had to laugh when Will suggested Barnabas had a girl somewhere, and Angelique said that's a girl she'd like to meet. Even though it directly applies to today's events, I find it amusing to consider the surface stories they're concocting, first that Barnabas might have a girlfriend stashed away somewhere, and that if he did, Angelique would be interested in meeting her for any other reason than to destroy her.

Christine: Or perhaps she understood that Barnabas' new girlfriend is the one providing her with life force. Here's Barnabas thanking Julia once again for setting him up with a younger woman.

John: It was amusing to hear that Papa Stokes was too drunk to show up today. I'm guessing Julia didn't tell him the body was missing, as I assume that sort of news might be sufficient to sober him up.

Christine: It sounded like he may have been too wasted to hear it even if she did tell him.

John: So what the heck are Barnabas and Julia waiting for? Just starting to revive the woman would be enough to knock out Angelique. Methinks the writers didn't think too hard about what it would mean for them to steal the woman's body.

Christine: Oh, I'm sure they'll find a way of making it so that they can revive the woman and Angelique can still have some sense of self. Remember Adam? Or do you prefer to forget?

Dark Shadows Episode 1043 6/24/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

Carolyn screams. Julia enters and asks her what happened. Carolyn tells her that she knows who murdered Angelique. Julia asks who it was. Carolyn tells her not to ask. Julia says she must know. Carolyn tries to leave the room. She tells Julia that she was wrong, and she doesn't know why she said it. She says it was just a dream, and didn't mean anything. Julia says that sometimes they do, and asks her again. Carolyn says she doesn't want to discuss it and runs upstairs.

Barnabas arrives at the old house, and Julia asks him if Carolyn loves her husband. She says she said she knows who Angelique's murderer is, but she won't say, obviously protecting someone. Julia assumes it's Will. Barnabas calls to Will, and tells Julia that he has powers over him and will find out the truth. Will comes upstairs, and Barnabas sends Julia to get Carolyn. Barnabas asks Will if he ever considered writing a murder mystery, and Will says he doesn't have that kind of mind. Barnabas asks Will if he hated Angelique, suggesting she flirted with him before running back to Quentin. Will says he liked looking at her too much to kill her. Barnabas realizes that Will can't lie to him, and sends him away.

Carolyn comes downstairs as Will leaves. Barnabas says he wants to hear about her dream, and she says it's none of his business. He asks her who she thinks murdered Angelique, and demands that she look into his eyes. She does, and he asks if she's going to force him to use his powers. He demands to know, and she says it was her mother.

Barnabas finds it difficult to believe, and has Carolyn sit down and explain herself. Carolyn says she remembered kneeling by the body. She says she picked up a piece of jade as she stood up, and realized it was a piece of her mother's hatpin. She says she didn't know at the time that Angelique was killed with a hatpin. Barnabas asks her why she thinks her mother did it, and Carolyn says that she hated Angelique. Barnabas says that someone could have taken the hatpin from Elizabeth. Unless there's something else Carolyn hasn't told him. She says that Angelique was running Will's life, and she had told her mother that she was leaving Will. She doesn't want to believe that her mother would have killed Angelique because of that. Carolyn tells him that she'll deny ever saying her mother is responsible. If anything, she says it's her fault.

Elizabeth is playing solitaire while Will reads. She asks if he heard a knock. She then asks if he has seen Maggie, and adds that Maggie thinks Quentin is in the house. Will says he doubts that. He asks her if that's why she's so jumpy. Elizabeth says Alexis says he's gone mad, and Will suggests that she not put too much faith in Angelique. She asks if she can stay at the old house with them, and he tells her that they have their hands full with Barnabas.

Barnabas reviews those present at the seance who have died: Cyrus, Sabrina and Bruno. Julia doesn't think there's a connection between Sabrina and Bruno. She says that Maggie found a voodoo doll with Bruno's ascot around it's neck. Barnabas says that Angelique put it there. He says when Quentin ran to Bruno's, Angelique went upstairs and used it to kill Bruno. He then thinks about the sleeping girl at Stokes'. He says that when she moves, Angelique reacts. He says they can get to Angelique through her. Julia says they don't know that they can change her condition. He reminds Julia of her work with Adam. He says they'll bring the girl here to find out her secret, and destroy Angelique forever. Julia says if the body goes missing, Angelique will assume Barnabas has it. He assures Julia he's ready to to battle with Angelique. Julia refuses to help him with the girl. He says it would be easier if she helped, but he will do it alone if he has to. He says they will get the girl tonight, and calls to Will.

Barnabas and Will go to the Collins' mausoleum. Will says Stokes is a buddy of his, and doesn't believe what Barnabas has said. He adds that if there was a secret room in the mausoleum, he'd already know about it. Barnabas leads him inside and opens the secret door. They see the room is full of furniture. Barnabas finds a drawing of the woman at Stokes' home. It's signed by Claude North. Barnabas asks Will if this is where she lived before; that they must find out. He says the room was his refuge for him forover a century in his own time. He assume now it as a sanctuary for someone connected to her.

Elizabeth asks Carolyn to go to an antique store tomorrow to sell her hat pins. Carolyn seems upset, and Elizabeth asks her why. Carolyn asks her mother about Angelique's murder at the seance. Elizabeth says that she doesn't want to discuss it, and asks her again to take the hatpins into Portland. Carolyn agrees.

Barnabas and Will arrive at Stokes' home. Will assures Barnabas that Stokes is at the Eagle, and will be there until closing. Will tells him there's someone else in the room with them. He hears Hoffman's voice, saying she won't let them enter.

Our thoughts

John: Wow. At the end of yesterday's episode, I thought wouldn't it be funny for it to play out like Twin Peaks, and when Carolyn goes to tell Julia who did it—she says she forgot. I guess we now know one possible soap opera source that David Lynch and Mark Frost could have drawn that from!

Christine: So, should we assume that Claude North is the artistic milk drinker who likes to hang out in the secret room in the mausoleum and sketch pretty young girls who become life force providers? I feel like I'm getting parallel time fatigue. I miss our original characters and can't understand why Barnabas cares more about what's happening in parallel time than his own time. He has his own Angelique to fight at home. Is he so obsessed with her that he needs to vanquish every incarnation of her there is?

John: Wasn't it obvious that Elizabeth was the culprit when Carolyn said yesterday that she was the first to go to Angelique after Quentin? Now, she may not be the murderer, but that was certainly what they wanted us to think.

Christine: It's what they wanted us to think that Carolyn would think, which means it's definitely not Elizabeth. I think the real culprit is whoever is not acting obviously nervous whenever the séance is mentioned, which now rules out Roger for me. My money is on Trask. He's as shifty as all of his counterparts.

John: Was that Petofi's hand-box now serving as a hatpin box?

Christine: It certainly is the famous Petofi box that was seen as early as Episode 18 on a table outside Vicki's room. I sense another collection that needs to be compiled.

Dark Shadows Episode 1042 6/23/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

Angelexis returns to Collinwood as Maggie is preparing to leave. She tells Maggie that she can't see Quentin, because she just came from the jail and he was acting like a madman—forcing her to tick the inspector so he could escape. She says she couldn't stop him. Maggie is shocked. Angelexis says he's innocent, and Maggie tells her that she doubts that. She points out that he hated Bruno. She asks Angelexis how Bruno died, and she says he was strangled, but they mustn't believe Quentin did it. Angelexis says if he was able to murder Bruno, then it's also possible that he murdered... and Maggie fills in the blank, saying Angelique. Angelexis says she hopes it isn't true. Maggie says the same. Angelexis tells her to be careful, since no one knows where Quentin is. She says he wouldn't hurt her, and Angelexis says the man she saw in the jail appeared to be capable of killing.

Julia is at the old house when Carolyn arrives. Julia tells her that the police were just there looking for Quentin, as he escaped from jail. Carolyn asks how, and Julia says it was suspicious, as he was alone with Angelique, who says he forced her to trick the inspector so he could escape. Julia says if Angelique helped him, then he's in danger from her. Carolyn asks if anyone knows where he is. Julia says they must find him and persuade him to give himself up. Carolyn suggests he might actually be guilty, and Julia assures her that he is not. Carolyn points out that if Angelique murdered Bruno, there's still another murderer out there.

Maggie opens a drawer in her room and finds the Bruno voodoo doll with his handkerchief tied around its neck. She shuts the drawer when there's a knock at her door. It's Carolyn, checking in on her. She opens the drawer and asks Carolyn if she knows what it is. She says it looks like it could be a voodoo doll, and notices Bruno's initials on the ascot. She says it could have been used to kill someone, and asks where she got it. Maggie says she just found it in her drawer. She asks who could have put it there. Carolyn tells her that someone planted it. Maggie asks if it could be Quentin, and Carolyn says no. She suggests it might have been Alexis. Maggie doesn't believe it. Carolyn asks who else it could be. She advises her to treat Alexis with caution. Maggie asks if she knows something that she's not telling her, and Carolyn just reiterates that she should be cautious around Alexis.

Julia tells Carolyn that Angelique didn't mention where Quentin was. Carolyn tells her that Angelique killed Bruno with a voodoo doll, and planted it in Maggie's drawer. She says she almost told Maggie the truth about Angelique. Julia reminds her that if Angelique finds out that people know her secret, she will destroy them. She says Maggie is safer for now not knowing the truth. She tells Carolyn they need to find out who murdered Angelique so that they can convince Quentin what to do, when they find him. She asks Carolyn who went to Angelique during the confusion of the seance, after Quentin. Carolyn lists off Bruno, Roger, Cyrus, her mother, Buffie Harrington, and Trask. Julia asks who went to her first after she fell, and she says it was her mother. Julia says it could have been any one of them. Carolyn adds that she's convinced she'll never know which one.

Maggie returns to her room to find the door open. She looks in her drawer and finds the voodoo doll is gone. Angelexis comes in and says she's going for a walk. Maggie asks if she had been in her room earlier. Angelexis says she did not. Maggie then notices that some of Quentin's things are missing, too. Angelexis says that he must be in the house. Maggie says that if he is, she needs to see him. Angelexis says it's not safe, and Maggie suggests she's deliberately trying to frighten her. Maggie apologizes, and says she's confused. Angelexis says if she thinks she'll be alright, she's going to take her walk. Maggie lets her go. Maggie thinks that she ran out of the house once before, and swore she'd never do it again. She decides to go looking for Quentin.

Maggie comes downstairs. She hears shutters banging in the drawing room and goes in and closes them. She returns to the foyer, where the front doors blow open. She shuts them, too. She calls for Quentin. She hears Angelique's music playing. She goes back upstairs.

Maggie approaches Angelique's room, still hearing Bruno's song playing. The doors are locked. She asks if Quentin is inside. The music stops. Julia arrives and asks her what's wrong. Maggie says she heard Bruno's music playing.

She turns to see that the doors are now open. Maggie assures her they were locked. She says there was someone playing the piano. Julia suggests that she go to stay in the old house with Will and Carolyn for the night, so she won't be alone. Angelexis appears and says she won't be alone—she will stay with  her, and dismisses Julia.

Carolyn is in the old house. She thinks it doesn't matter who killed Angelique. She'd like to put the seance out of her mind completely. Then she realizes that Julia is right, and Quentin must be cleared of both murders. She has a vision of Angelique lying dead on the floor, with her hat pin beside her. She screams. Julia enters and asks her what happened. Carolyn tells her that she knows who killed Angelique.

Our thoughts

John: What a day for Quentin to have the day off! We don't even get a recap of his brazen escape from the authorities. Of course, what I was really interested in seeing was how Angelique was able to talk her way out of getting arrested for aiding and abetting!

Christine: It seems she got away with batting her eyelashes and saying he made her do it.

John: In classic Dark Shadows fashion, show a character a random prop out of context and they describe exactly what it is, how it was used and by whom! All as if they had read the script beforehand! Carolyn has no trouble recognizing the voodoo doll, spotting Bruno's initials on the ascot, and all but confirming for Maggie that Angelique was responsible. If only she had a way to turn her power of perception onto Angelique's murder.

Christine: You forget that Parallel Collinwood also has a well stocked occult library, so all in the house can stay abreast of witchcraft and other supernatural phenomena that they are apt to encounter.

John: Boom! No sooner said than done. So does parallel-Carolyn have some sort of supernatural power to look into the past, or was that just a stroke of luck that she suddenly remembered who killed Angelique?

Christine: It could be that she's been blocking it out because she didn't want to face the fact that she truly believes her mother is the killer, and only today forced herself to face that reality.

Dark Shadows Episode 1041 6/22/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV.com

Angelexis strangles her Bruno voodoo doll.

Bruno lies on the ground. Quentin applauds. When he doesn't get up, he kneels down and shakes him. Hamilton comes in and says that he hopes for Quentin's sake that Bruno isn't dead. Hamilton checks for a pulse and tells Quentin that Bruno is dead. He asks how it happened.

Quentin says he doesn't understand. Hamilton asks if he found him like this when he arrived. Quentin says he didn't kill him; he suddenly began to choke, and he thought it was an act. Hamilton says that Bruno is dead, and Quentin said he was angry enough to kill him with his own hands earlier. Hamilton arrests Quentin for suspicion of murder. He allows Quentin to call his attorney.

Angelique sneaks into Maggie's room and places the Bruno voodoo doll, with his handkerchief around its neck, in her drawer.

Maggie can't believe the news. Quentin tells her they can't do anything until they know how Bruno died. Angelexis walks in and is shocked to hear Bruno died. Hamilton says he found Quentin standing over his body. She says she doesn't believe Quentin murdered anyone. Quentin asks if he can get some things from his room, and Hamilton agrees, and accompanies him upstairs. Angelexis tells Maggie that she's sorry. Maggie says she wished she knew he had intended to go to the cottage—he was in no state of mind to see Bruno. Angelexis asks if Maggie believes he could have done it. Maggie says it looks bad for Quentin, and doesn't see Angelexis smiling.

Quentin packs a few things, and Hamilton asks if there's anything else he'd like to tell him. Quentin opens a drawer and sees the statue with Bruno's handkerchief around its neck. He closes the drawer and says that if he had anything else to say, he's sure Hamilton wouldn't believe it.

Quentin comes downstairs with Hamilton. He looks at Maggie. She asks what she should tell Daniel, and he says to tell him he's been called away on business. He asks her what she thinks of all this. She says it's all come on so suddenly. He says he wants to think about a lot of things, and leaves with the inspector.

Hamilton asks Quentin if he thinks Maggie thinks he's guilty. He suggests that Hamilton ask her.

Barnabas meets Quentin at the police station, and asks if he can help prove his innocence. Quentin says the inspector has a good case against him. He says when he arrived, Bruno was alive, and when Hamilton arrived, he was dead. Barnabas asks if he has any idea what happened, and Quentin tells him he thinks he found the murder weapon just before leaving Collinwood. He says Bruno was killed by witchcraft. He found a voodoo doll with his scarf around its neck. He says he thinks it was used by someone who knew he would be with Bruno when they did it. He tells Barnabas that it was in Maggie's room, and that they've obviously been wrong about his dear little wife. Barnabas says he can't believe it's Maggie. Quentin says it's the third time he's found something related to witchcraft with Maggie's things. Barnabas assures him that she's not a witch, and that she loves him very much. Barnabas says he wants to see him in the evening tomorrow, and working together they can prove who killed Bruno, and who is trying to wreck his marriage. Hamilton comes in and says he should have the results of Bruno's autopsy within the hour.

Julia says that if they had destroyed the body in Stokes' cottage, Angelique would have died, and Quentin wouldn't be in jail because Bruno would still be alive, stomping her foot for emphasis. He says there's no point going over that now. She says if they destroy the body now, they'll destroy the actual murderer. Barnabas says they must keep Alexis alive in order to prove she's guilty of Bruno's murder.

Angelexis asks Maggie if she's heard from the lawyers. She says she's sure he'll be home by tomorrow. Maggie says she hopes she gets more time. Angelexis says that while they know Quentin has a bad temper, he couldn't kill Angelique. She says they must both have faith in Quentin.

Quentin hangs out in an office at the police station. Hamilton walks in and tells him that Bruno died of strangulation. He charges Quentin with murder in the first degree. He says in view of the new charge, the judge has refused to grant bail. Quentin says he'd still like to talk to his lawyer. Hamilton says he can, but first he needs to let Quentin know that they now believe what was written in Cyrus' journal. They're going to get a court order to have Angelique's body exhumed. Quentin appears troubled, and Hamilton asks if he's afraid what they'll find.

Maggie gets a call from the lawyers. She tells Barnabas that bail was denied, and the charge has been changed to first degree murder. Barnabas asks if she believes he's guilty. He asks if the police have the journal, and she says Alexis gave it to them. He's surprised. Maggie explains that she had bought the original, and Bruno had a copy of the confession. She says that Alexis was trying to protect Quentin. Barnabas assures Maggie that Quentin is innocent, and they can help him if he cooperates with the authorities and doesn't panic.

Angelexis asks if there's anything the lawyers can do. He says they can exhume Angelique's body. He asks what they'll do when they find that there is no body. He says if they find out he and Cyrus destroyed the body, they'll demand to know why. She says he has to get out of jail to prove his innocence. He says he can't. She says there's one other way, and he says escape is absurd. She says that Maggie is being used just as he is. He has to get out to clear his name. She says she'll do everything she can to help him.

Hamilton is on the phone, trying to see how quickly they can get the body exhumed. He hears Alexis scream, and when he goes into the room, Quentin knocks him out.

Our thoughts

John: Barnabas in a fishbowl! Okay, it was a water dispenser, but it's a classic Dark Shadows directorial flourish we've come to expect whenever there's a mirror or magnifying glass on the set.

Christine: I believe water glasses have also been employed. I wonder who played the part of dead Bruno today, since he seemed to be carefully concealed so we could not see that it wasn't actually him. All of Michael Stroka's characters end up being killed off, poor guy.

John: I love how Julia decides this is the perfect opportunity to tell Barnabas, I told you so. Even he seemed willing to admit that they probably would have been better off killing the stranger in Stokes' cottage.

Christine: What are friends for? I love how she punctuated it with a foot stomp.

John: Nice plotting by Angelique. And Quentin has no idea that she's setting him up to get in more trouble at each and every turn. Did he really think that knocking out the inspector and escaping from jail could be remotely considered a wise choice?

Christine: It's a good thing he was allowed to pack a bag before being hauled off to jail, which will come in handy now that he's become a fugitive. I'm not sure how Barnabas expects to prove Angelique was responsible for the murder in order to clear Quentin. Also, is there some reason that Barnabas can not tell Quentin that Alexis is really Angelique, and the one responsible for the witchcraft in the house?
