Barnabas stabs a pillow, when Angelique asks him if she hates him that much. He tells her he knows that she's the witch. She claims she will always love him. He raises his knife to stab her, but he is unable. She raises a hand in defense and he drops the knife from his hand.

He then goes to strangle her, but she uses her power to protect herself. He tells her he has powers, too—the power to hate her forever. She says she'll stop practicing witchcraft if he asks her. He says she cannot stop him from loving Josette. She reminds him that when he first saw her in Martinique, he saw her as a woman. He blames her for Jeremiah's death. He asks her what else she has done. She admits to putting a spell on him, and then making him better. And putting the spell on Josette and Jeremiah. She also admits to making Sarah ill. He tells her that he'll turn her over to the authorities in Collinwood. She says that if he tries to leave, or act against her, Josette will suffer. If he wants Josette to survive, he must remain with her.

Nathan and Millicent giggle outside the old house, returning late from an evening out together. She tells him that he doesn't know anything about love, and he laughs out loud. She explains that he's not conducting the courtship correctly.

Barnabas shows up and Millicent says that she's ruined. She tells him that she just happened to meet Nathan while out walking. He says he must see Josette tonight. He asks her to wake Josette. The Countess also appears, causing Millicent additional dismay. Barnabas tells the Countess that he must see Josette, and she says that it's an interesting way to spend his honeymoon—and that Josette doesn't wish to see him.

Angelique wonders where Barnabas has wandered off to, realizing she needs eyes everywhere.

Barnabas pleads with the Countess to see Josette. She asks if he wants to apologize for marrying her maid. Barnabas says Josette is in danger. The Countess asks for details, and he brings up the witch. She says Miss Winters is in custody. He says she needs to take Josette away from Collinwood. She says she respected him before his ridiculous marriage. She escorts him downstairs, and he tells her that if anything happens to Josette, she will be responsible.

Angelique has a piece of paper with eyes drawn on it. She speaks an incantation to use these eyes to watch over Barnabas.

Millicent cries because she was seen so late with Nathan. He's offended that she implied he's not a gentleman, and she says that maybe she's not a lady.

Barnabas appears again, and Millicent tries to make up a story about awaiting his return. He dismisses that, and asks her to tell Josette to meet with him tomorrow morning in the garden. She says she will try.

She then says she feels as if they're being watched. She leaves the two men to go into the house, and Barnabas  says there are eyes watching them. He also hears the sound of a bat. Nathan offers to help him, when Barnabas sees the bat watching them.

Our thoughts

John: I'm sorry, but we're asked to believe that Barnabas went from attempting to kill Angelique to leaving to plot his revenge against her. Surely she would have done something to keep him in line, like she had previously done for Ben.

Christine: Angelique once again asserts that she doesn't want to have him by love potion, but then insists he stay with her to prevent harm coming to Josette. She really should have figured out that there was no way he was going to love her after finding out all that she had done, and just use the love potion and be done with it.

John: I wonder where Angelique got the sharpie to draw her magic eyes with? I'm beginning to think her spells must originate in a re-purposed arts & crafts book.

Christine: It looked more like she was using a charcoal stick to draw her magic eyes, and surely she got it at the same witch's supply store where she acquired the little burning tree, the mini zombie maker coffin, and the make-a-cat transformation clay. The question is why she would have a squeaky, conspicuous bat be her eyes. You think she might have chosen a more stealthy animal to act as her watcher. She's really sort of a haphazard witch. I enjoyed the comic relief from Nathan and Millicent in today's episode, especially when Barnabas kept interrupting their tryst.

John: And to think I thought we had already seen the worst of television bat effects of the late 60s, we sink to a new low.

Christine: I recommend that you get in touch with your inner child, the one that grew up in the 70s with primitive special effects, in order to better appreciate the delights of Dark Shadows.

I don't want to give away too much, but I always kind of wish Nathan would STAY a mainly comical character.

I thought Episode 403 was one of the best yet. What high drama having Angelique and Barnabas face to face with the truth in the open! Parker and Frid at their best! And - yes - it was a great bonus having Nancy Barrett back to her flirtatious boy chasing ways. Love your blog!!!!
