Dark Shadows Episode 527 - 7/3/68

In Vicki's room, Jeff tells Blair he doesn't believe Vicki was sleepwalking. Blair says that now that Vicki is home and his sister is back, everything is back to normal, including the painting, as he pulls it out and shows that it is no longer faded. Jeff says he doesn't understand how paint can fade and come back. Blair bids them goodnight.

Vicki says the painting has add an odd effect on so many of them. Jeff tells her she wasn't sleepwalking, and Blair knows it. He shows her the button she had in her hand, and says that it's from Blair's jacket, so he's involved somehow. He adds that if he truly is Cassandra's brother, he may be related to Angelique. He tells her he'll go to see Professor Stokes tomorrow. He kisses her, promising her a fresh start.

In the drawing room, Nicholas congratulates himself on his night's work. Jeff rushes in and tells him to stay away from Vicki. He says he knows he had something to do with her disappearance. He points out Blair's missing button. Jeff produces the missing button, telling him that he found it with Vicki. She was clutching it in her hand when he found her in the woods. Blair says he must have lost it when walking in the woods. Jeff offers up a veiled threat, and Blair smiles at him.

Adam reviews words in the dictionary. He and Stokes converse, and Stokes asks him the first thing that he remembers? Adam says Barnabas. He describes straps and a table like a bed. He says Dr. Hoffman, and then hurt. Stokes ask where he lived, and Adam mentions a house where Willie lived, and how he was chained to a wall. He describes breaking the chain and running to escape. Stokes asked what Barnabas did to him, and he says he hurt him. The doorbell rings and Stokes sends Adam to his room.

Stokes prepares to hypnotize Jeff. He asks Vicki to return to Collinwood. She leaves the two of them alone. Stokes hypnotizes Jeff with his eyeglass. Stokes asks his name, and he says it's Jeff Clark. Stokes asks before that, and he describes waking up and seeing Dr. Lang. Stokes asks what he was doing, and Jeff says Lang was going take his face. He told Jeff he was a murderer. Stokes mentions Barnabas and Hoffman were always in Lang's laboratory.

Stokes asks if he'd recognize the body of Lang's creation. He thinks he could, and Stokes calls out Adam. Jeff is shocked to see him. Stokes sends Adam away. He stops hypnotizing Jeff, who asks him to tell him who he is.

Stokes and Vicki are in the drawing room discussing Jeff. Stokes says he has come to see Julia. Vicki says she's not home. She says she asked Cassandra where she is. Stokes is shocked to hear Cassandra has returned. He asks when, and Nicholas Blair enters, telling him she returned yesterday. Stokes tells him they have met before, when Blair was selling an antique dealer the painting that Vicki bought. Blair denies it. He says he's never been to Collinsport before, and excuses himself to retire upstairs. Blair says he'll tell his sister Stokes was asking after her, and he encourages him to do so.

Stokes asks where the picture is. She says it's upstairs. He asks if the painting has been restored. She says yes. Stokes tells her she must leave Collinwood tonight, or she will have the dream, and Barnabas will be next.

Our thoughts

John: I was disappointed that Jeff blew his chance to pin down Blair with the missing button. Blair got off too easy.

Christine: I had to laugh at Nicholas delivering his third person soliloquy to his brandy glass, telling himself he's free to leave and let Cassandra make more mistakes, as he strangely wags his pointer finger back and forth. Since Blair acknowledged he had rescued her again, I wonder if the first time was after Sam had aged her portrait, or if he was also responsible for rescuing her after Barnabas strangled her in the mausoleum. Perhaps Nicholas is the reason Angelique can take a licking and still keep on ticking.

John: I'm curious what Stokes' endgame is with Adam. He's gotten him to be much more communicative, and he's getting information from him. But how much does Adam really know? Will Stokes soon realize that Barnabas is a vampire?

Christine: I can't imagine that Stokes is teaching Adam solely by reading him words out of the dictionary and drilling him with flash cards, which would seem to quickly bore his childlike mind. I prefer to imagine he's tucking him in and reading him bedtime stories from the Brothers Grimm to help develop his vocabulary. I like how Jeff Clark recognized Adam from the severed arm he had procured for Lang's creation.

Yep, that's definitely Adam.

John: Interesting twist to hear that Blair sold the painting of Angelique to the antique shop! I do love how he suggests there must be someone else who looks just like him, as if he doesn't have a unique look.

Christine: That was pretty funny. He must have been selling the portrait at Angelique's behest to help her gain access to Collinwood, but why would he do so? I want to know more about the coven of two and the strange bargain they've struck. I wonder what makes Stokes think that Vicki can avoid the dream curse by leaving Collinwood. Let's hope he's wrong and that we'll be adding to the Round Robin Nightmare tracker before the end of the week.

Dark Shadows Episode 491 - 5/13/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Adam and Barnabas are lying on operating tables in the lab as Julia prepares for the experiment. Julia throws two nasty looking switches and electricity pulses through the lab. A polygraph and an oscilloscope are amongst the odd equipment churning away.

Julia is frantic as several small smoke bombs go off in the lab. She shuts down the machines, and goes to Barnabas.

His eyes open and she's thrilled he's still alive. He asks what happened and she says she had to stop. He asks to get up, and says they will try again. He sends her downstairs to review the journals and find out what she did wrong. She leaves and he gets up and walks to Adam's body, telling him he wanted it to be looking down on his lifeless shell. He begs for him to live, and Adam's eyes open. Barnabas realizes that they are both alive.

Barnabas calls for Julia as Adam breaks free of his bindings and gets up. Barnabas helps him stand, and then sits him back down on the table. Adam touches his own lips, but is unable to speak.

Julia arrives and is frightened by him. She asks what they are going to do. Barnabas asks what he's going to do, as he's still alive. Barnabas asks if Adam can understand them, and he looks at him oddly. Barnabas moves across the room, and like an animal or child, Adam follows him. Julia takes off her bracelet and shakes it in front of him. Adam grabs it and shakes it. He's like a happy child.

Barnabas says she should go through the books again. She says that he's alive, and there's nothing more to do. Barnabas wonders what they'll do with him. Julia goes to get him a sedative. Adam walks around confused. Julia explains she's going to put him to sleep, and when he wakes they'll feed him. The shot hurts Adam, and he attacks Julia.

Barnabas pulls him back and calmly brings him back to the table to lie down. He gets back up on the table, and Julia points out that Barnabas has power over him. He asks Julia what time it is, noting he has no bloodlust. She says he may not need to return to his coffin. He asks if he stays until dawn and dies, what will happen to Adam. She asks if he's prepared to die, and he says yes when there's a knock at the door.

Liz enters Lang's office.

Barnabas tells Liz he is surprised to see her, and she says she's come to see Dr. Hoffman about David. She asks Barnabas about his note, and his cousin Adam, when Julia enters. Liz tells her that David lost his voice inexplicably. Barnabas asks if Cassandra was upset. He also added that he once had a servant named Ben who had a similar experience, and was eventually fine. Julia agrees to go with Liz to Collinwood, and Barnabas reminds her about the experiment, pointing out that it's almost dawn. She assures him that she'll be back by then. Julia goes to get her bag, and Barnabas apologizes for his focus on their experiment. She seems surprised by his interest in science. Barnabas tells her he's most interested in the future—the very near future.

Alone in Lang's office, Barnabas waxes poetic about life and Adam, as he awaits the possible death that dawn brings.

Adam stirs, and gets up. He wanders around the lab, looking at and touching things. He sees his reflection, but continues his exploration of the lab.

He inadvertently turns on the bubbling machines and is quite enamored with them.

Barnabas drones on, thinking it may be better for him to live, as opposed to living and again being cursed. Julia returns and asks if he feels alright. He asks what will happen to Adam if he dies, and she says he won't die. He says they must make some arrangement to protect him, when she says there's no need. Barnabas sees the sunrise and realizes he is cured. He asks what happened, and asks if Adam is now a vampire. They hear a crash from the lab.

In the lab, a table is overturned. Adam picks up a scalpel and cuts himself. Hurt, he goes through the lab, breaking things and crying. Julia and Barnabas come in and he chases Julia around the lab. Barnabas tries to stop him and they end up holding him off at the door, with one arm reaching through.

Our thoughts

John: Adam must have thrown off his covers between last Friday and today's filming of the experiments, disappointing anyone thinking he might not be fully dressed after being assembled from dead body parts of others. That, or they hadn't figured out a costume for him prior to this week.

Christine: I would say that Barnabas would have made sure he was clothed, as he was expecting to wake up in Adam's body, but Adam's fashion suggests otherwise. Happy Birthday, Adam!

John: Again, anyone else think that Liz might have had the nightmare when she showed up at Lang's? Particularly since she was out and about before dawn? That would have been funny. "Barnabas, I had a terrible nightmare, and as you were in it, I need to tell you..."

Christine: That would be a nice shocker, but I don't think Liz can have the dream until Mrs. Johnson has it. It doesn't seem like we'll have a character experience the dream without us having the opportunity to witness it and add their door prize to the Nightmare Tracker.

John: So the sedative was going to put Adam to sleep for hours, and yet in the few minutes between receiving it and dawn, he's back up and walking around. As I mentioned previously, the Adam storyline is the one I remember watching when first seeing Dark Shadows in syndication in the early 80s. I have to say, I'm quite happy with how his debut went today, and am looking forward to his continuing adventures over the next several months!

Christine: I wonder if becoming parents will deepen Barnabas and Julia's relationship. Adam is quite the lovable monster child. It was clear that Barnabas provided him with some of his life force when Adam went for Julia's throat the first time she did something to make him mad. Like monster father, like monster son.

Dark Shadows Episode 485 - 5/3/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Lang works on his creature, which now appears to have a head (but perhaps not a face) covered by a sheet. He thinks about the dream he had when he hears a knock at the door. He goes to answer it and it's Julia. He tells her it's just like in his dream. She asks if something has gone wrong that will stop the experiment. He tells her that time is of the essence, and the body will begin to deteriorate within 48 hours.

Lang describes his dream to her. How she was at the door, and beckoned him to follow her. He says she led him to a door, and after he went through she closed and locked it behind him. He details the skull behind the first door, the guillotine behind the second door, and his headless creation behind the third door. He says then he knew his experiment would fail. Relieved of the nightmare, he thanks her. She offers to help him, and he says she wants Barnabas as he was before.

Barnabas tells Willie to bring a message to Elizabeth. Outside the dogs howl, and Willie suggests Barnabas may not have changed as much as he thinks he has. He tells Willie tomorrow that he will be in a new body, in a body he has chosen to call Adam. He says the letter will give Adam acceptance in Collinwood. He says he will tell her that Barnabas has gone to England indefinitely. Willie isn't happy, saying he might not be the same. Barnabas reminds him that it must go to Elizabeth only. He assures Willie that even in another body, he will recognize him as Barnabas.

Willie arrives at Collinwood and is greeted by Cassandra. She offers to take the letter, but Willie says he was told to give it only to Mrs. Stoddard. He asks who she is, and when she says she's Roger's wife, he explains that he's been away for a while. She invites him into the drawing room.

Cassandra points out that it's odd Barnabas doesn't have a phone, suggesting that it's like he's living in the 18th Century. Willie mentions that Barnabas doesn't stay in like he used to; he says he spends a lot of time with Dr. Lang. She asks if Barnabas was different before his accident. Willie says yes, but adds that sometime he's almost the same. Cassandra says he can leave the letter with her, and she'll see that Liz gets it. Willie says Barnabas is going away, and she says she really needs to reach him. Willie sees Mrs. Stoddard's car pull up, and quickly excuses himself. Cassandra smiles.

Lang explains how simply people can transfer all elements of life outside of the soul. He shows her the book in which he's got all the steps written down.

They discuss the procedure as Barnabas arrives. Lang unveils Adam's face, and asks Barnabas to lie on the adjoining table. Lang asks Julia to tighten Barnabas' straps as he places the soul-transformer on Barnabas' head. They begin the experiment.

Cassandra holds a clay figure of Dr. Lang, and describes how by manipulating it, he will suffer accordingly. She says her power comes from the devil himself.

Lang throws some switches, and as electricity races through the equipment, Barnabas screams. Lang spins dials like he's tuning into a radio station.

Cassandra pokes her clay doll.

Lang squirms as he calls for Julia to check Adam's pulse.

Cassandra pokes the pin deeper into the clay doll.

Lang falls over on his control panel, screaming. Julia calls out to Barnabas.

Our thoughts

John: So after several weeks left out on the operating table, Lang's body is rapidly approaching it's use-by date. I've seen bananas that haven't lasted that long.

Christine: It must be fashion week on Dark Shadows, with Cassandra trying to outdo Maggie's technicolor quilted pants with her neon butterfly caftan.

John: Julia tells Lang that her not speaking proves it must have been a dream. I wonder if that was a deliberate jab the writers snuck in the script...

Christine: They would only be jabbing themselves since they are responsible for creating her dialogue.

John: As soon as Lang showed Julia his notes on how to transfer a soul to dead tissue, I wrote him off as dead before the experiment would be completed.

Christine: He's not dead yet! He's getting better. I think he'll go for a walk.

John: Nice reflection of Barnabas' face above Adam's!

Christine: The camera crew often sets up some interesting shots with mirrors, but that one was particularly well done. It wasn't clear what caused the explosion behind Lang, but it was a cool explosion anyway.

Dark Shadows Episode 528 - 7/4/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Jeff asks why Vicki has to leave, and she tells him that she'll have the dream, and if she has it, Barnabas will die. He says he doesn't understand. He says Stokes couldn't figure anything out about him through hypnosis. Jeff says she could tell Cassandra she's going away, and then stay at the Evans' cottage with Maggie. Cassandra enters looking for David. Vicki tells her she needs to leave for a week. Cassandra says that's not possible. They need her to be with David. She says she's busy with her brother in town. Vicki says she must leave tonight, and Cassandra threatens, "even if you don't have a position to come back to?"

In the garden, Blair complains about his sister's lack of progress. He calls her to come to the gazebo to see him.

Vicki asks Cassandra if something is wrong, and she rushes out, telling her to speak to Roger.

Cassandra tells Blair he interrupted her while Vicki was threatening to leave. He tells her she's wasting time with Barnabas, and she snaps at him. He reminds her that she is there because he allowed her to come. He asks her why Barnabas is not as he was before, and she blames Sam Evans for dying. She says it will work if Vicki stays in Collinwood tonight and has the dream. He says she can't even control a young woman. He says she could have dealt with Barnabas as soon as she returned. She asks for his help with Vicki. She asks him to drug Vicki, and he explains he's too talented to be drugging drinks. He agrees, but points out that he will never forget her incompetence.

Vicki comes downstairs with her bags, and Blair stops her to have a drink with him. She reluctantly agrees. He fixes her drink, and before she can try it, Jeff arrives. Blair invites him to join them, but he says they don't have time. They leave, with Blair left holding the drinks. Cassandra comes in, and he offers her Vicki's drink. He says drugging drinks is not his style. Blair says he's concerned she's losing her powers. He suggests she figure out where Vicki has gone, and she tells him to leave her alone to do that.

Cassandra looks into the flames to find Vicki's destination. She sees the Evans cottage in the flames.

Vicki thanks Maggie for letting her stay with her. She also thanks her for not asking questions why she wanted to get away from Collinwood. Maggie points out that she wanted to stay close to Jeff. Vicki asks why she and Joe don't get married. She says they will get married, very soon. Vicki offers to throw her a shower, and Maggie says maybe soon she can return the favor.

At midnight, Angelique appears in the room with Vicki. She leaves rosewater perfume for her, and says when she uses it, she will fall asleep and have the dream.

Maggie comes into her room, sees Angelique, and screams.

Our thoughts

John: I don't quite get how Vicki sleeping in Collinsport, but not Collinwood, would prevent her from having the dream. Sam and Maggie both had the dream in the cottage. I think that was a weak story point.

Christine: Agreed. It may have been an excuse to have bipolar Jeff Clark be in surly mode again today and demand that she not leave town. Unlike Vicki, who denies that Barnabas loves her, he still remembers that Vicki was going to run off and marry Barnabas at one time.

John: Blair continues to treat Angelique with disdain. I wonder what exactly is the history between them, as they are certainly not equals...

Nicholas: If you cannot find out where she has gone, I should be terribly concerned if I were you. And I wouldn't be you for anything in this world.

Christine: His disdain seems to stem from her love for Barnabas, which is not an appropriate emotion for someone who summons the devil on a regular basis. It was nice to hear him confront her on why she didn't change Barnabas back immediately instead of dilly dallying around with the dream curse. I loved when he got exasperated and told her, "Oh really! I am much too talented to spend my time drugging drinks," but then agreed to drug Vicki's drink instead of using his talents at sorcery to help her. This guy gets more fun to watch every day.

John: Do you think Maggie has thwarted Angelique's plan? I would have expected her to disappear as soon as Maggie opened the door. Maybe she truly has lost her magic touch.

Christine: Hopefully she has a lighter handy so she can entrance Maggie and we can get on with the dream curse. I'm surprised that Vicki is not too creeped out to sleep in dead Sam Evans' bed. I wonder where Jeff Clark is sleeping. Did we really need to check in on the clock three times before Angelique finally showed up at the witching hour?
