Dark Shadows Episode 1211 2/15/71

Julia returns to Collinwood and Flora tells her that Melanie has the plague. Julia doesn't understand how it's possible. Flora reminds her that it happened in the past when their relatives refused to hold the lottery. She explains that they held a seance, after which Melanie was afflicted. She says a doctor is with her, along with Quentin. Flora tells her she wants to convene a family meeting.

Morgan tells Catherine that the doctor won't let him in Melanie's room. Catherine says that she was all right just a few hours ago. He explains that it's the result of the curse. She dismisses him, and he says it's all due to the curse. Julia comes in and tells them Julia wants to meet in the drawing room.

Flora tells Gabriel to relax, and not to resort to his usual means. She tells him to give her his flask, which he reluctantly does. She tells him she'll return it when they're finished. He asks her if Melanie is going to die. Julia, Morgan and Catherine come in. Flora explains that there's no normal way Melanie can be saved from the plague. Catherine wonders if she actually has it, and Quentin, standing at the doorway, says there's no doubt about it. Flora confirms that they will hold the lottery tonight. Catherine speaks up and suggests that the lottery not be held. Flora says that's impossible. She reminds Catherine that Melanie is upstairs dying. Quentin tells Catherine that she can believe as she wishes, but if they vote, she'll lose 5 to 1. 

As Quentin steps into the room, Gabriel tells him to stop, pointing out that he has been exposed to the plague. Quentin says they will all get it unless they go through the ceremony. Flora agrees. Gabriel suggests they burn the house down. Quentin reminds him that some of their ancestors tried that unsuccessfully. Flora says she will prepare six slips. Morgan insists that only the men participate. Quentin agrees. Julia aligns with Flora, saying they should all participate, adding that they have precedent on their side. Quentin asks if she'd have them involve Melanie as well. Quentin and Morgan press Gabriel to weigh in. Gabriel points out that they haven't heard from Catherine. She speaks up, saying that she agrees that the women should participate. Morgan tells her that she can't be serious. Catherine explains that it doesn't matter if she believe in the lottery. Flora tells him that they will vote. They go around the room, and Gabriel casts the deciding vote . . . and he votes yes. Quentin grabs him and threatens to put him in the room and throw away the key. Flora tells them that she will let them know when the slips are ready. 

Gabriel takes a drink from a hidden cup. Morgan comes in and says he could kill him with his bare hands. Gabriel reminds him that will increase Catherine's odds of being selected. Morgan points out that he decreased his by voting yes. Gabriel tells him it makes no difference to him what he believes. Gabriel says he voted no to save his wife. He adds that if it was just Julia and their mother, Morgan would have voted yes. Morgan denies it. Gabriel tells him to go spend what may be his last night with his wife.

Morgan tells Catherine that if she picks the losing slip, she must let him take her place in the room. She tells him that's out of the question. He says he won't have her life jeopardized by his coward brother. She says it's too early to worry about. 

Gabriel continues drinking when Quentin comes in, and tells his brother that he'll stand as a monument to losers. Quentin asks Gabriel how he'll feel when their mother chooses the losing slip, and goes into the room only to die, or emerge mad. Gabriel says he doesn't think she'll draw the losing slip. Gabriel says if he chooses the losing slip, he'll do his duty. Quentin says he wouldn't be surprised if Gabriel struck up a bargain with whoever is in the room to sell out the entire family. Gabriel asks Quentin to promise to kill him if he comes out of the room insane. Julia arrives and tells them that Flora is ready.

In the drawing room, Quentin offers to go first. He draws a slip, followed by the rest of the family.

Our thoughts:  

John: Sad to report that news of Christopher Pennock's passing on February 13th. Gabriel was in particularly fine form today as he let his brothers down by siding with the women when it came to lottery eligibility.

 

Christine: It was a delight to see him on Halloween enjoying pizza and beers with his buddy James Storm, making the sudden news all the more sad indeed. 

                                                                                                                           

John: As soon as Catherine suggested that women should also participate in the lottery, I think they telegraphed that she would be the one selected. I guess we'll find out for sure tomorrow!

 
Christine: I thought it was when Morgan said she should let him take her place if she drew the slip that indicated she would be the one. I'm betting he'll change his mind once that happens.

John: Poor Flora was having trouble using that fountain pen... I was beginning to think that none of the slips would have the X on it.

 

Christine: For all his bravado, Morgan was in no hurry to draw a slip, allowing his wife to go before him.

 

Dark Shadows Episode 1198 1/27/71

In the drawing room, Barnabas tells Angelique that he knows how he feels. Trask bursts in and calls out, "Die, witch!" before shooting her. Barnabas wrestles the gun away from Trask and says he should have killed him before. He drops him to the ground and calls to Julia. 

Angelique asks him to hold her, telling him she's dying. He tells her that he loves her. She dies in his arms. 

Trask starts to get up, and Barnabas grabs him. Trask runs upstairs and Barnabas follows him. He finds his way into a room and grabs a letter opener. He stabs Barnabas with it, but Barnabas sticks it in his belly. Trask wanders into the room in the East Wing and is transported into parallel time. Barnabas sees him, and then watches as he disappears when the room reverts to being empty.

Barnabas comes downstairs and picks up Trask's gun. He lays it on a table and kneels beside Angelique's dead body. He tells her that he was so often blinded by his fury, yet beneath his rage was a love as strong as hers.  

Julia comes in, and he tells her that Angelique is dead. He says Trask killed her before she knew that he loved her. He explains that she was his only love, and she never knew. She asks what happened, and he says Trask attacked him, and has disappeared into parallel time.

Desmond wonders where Leticia is. Flora says she doesn't know. She's just pleased that he is free. She chides herself for falling for Gerard's charm. She says that at least he brought them Leticia. Leticia returns and she and Desmond embrace and kiss. Flora leaves them. He asks where she has been, and she says she's been walking on the beach. He tells her that they're leaving Collinsport to get married in New York.

Barnabas tells Julia and Stokes that the police believed his story. He adds that Angelique is to be buried in the family mausoleum. Stokes says they must return to their own time. Barnabas asks how, and Stokes says they must ascend Quentin's staircase. He says they must return to Collinwood in their time to know if they've succeeded. He says it's 1971 there now. Barnabas wonders about what their visit has done to Collinwood in 1971. Desmond walks in and asks if they've gone mad, saying 1971 is 130 years from now. Julia explains that they came from the future. Stokes says they came down Quentin's staircase. He says they must be destroyed. Barnabas tells them they must leave him there. They're adamant that he must return with them. Desmond says that if Barnabas is staying for Valerie's funeral, he and Leticia can stay. Barnabas agrees to trying to ascend the stairs. 

Desmond is amazed to hear about the room in the East Wing, after hearing about the stairs. Barnabas says he must stop Trask if he tries to escape from parallel time. Desmond assures them that if he escapes, he will deal with him. He says he will tell no one the secret but Leticia and Quentin. They say their goodbyes. He asks how he will know if they made it, and Barnabas says he must assume that they have. As they ascend the stairs, Julia asks what they should do if they return to Collinwood in ruins. At the top of the stairs, Stokes opens the door and the three step through into disco lights. 

Barnabas, Julia and Stokes exit the stairwell. Collinwood is still standing, and Julia assumes they changed everything.

Two hours later, Barnabas dressed in 1971 fashions, Barnabas says they haven't seen a single person in the whole house. Stokes points out the refrigerator was full of food. Julia says there are no signs of the ghosts of Gerard and Daphne. Elizabeth walks in and tells them they're all late for opening of the historical center. She tells them to hurry. She says she returned to get Roger's speech. Julia asks if David and Hallie are there, and Elizabeth confirms it. Barnabas asks about Quentin and Carolyn, and she says they are there as well. She finds Roger's speech, and invites them to go with her. She mentions to Stokes that she found a journal from one of her ancestors, Flora Collins, in the West Wing that she's giving to the historical society tonight. Barnabas tells Julia that the ghosts of Gerard and Daphne never came there. He says the stairway is likely no more; destroyed by Desmond. 

Desmond chops at the staircase, wondering if Barnabas, Julia and Stokes made it back to their own time.

Leticia calls to Desmond. He comes upstairs and she says she was worried about him. He tells her to come with her to the East Wing. 

Leticia can't believe that Valerie is dead, and Trask is in another band of time. He tells her to wait until she hears the rest. He opens the door to an empty room. He stops her before she enters, and it suddenly changes. They see Trask, stabbed, calling for help. Leticia says that he's dead. She then sees Julia enter and call to Flora. Flora arrives and says it finally happened. What they've dreaded. Julia shuts the doors Desmond and Leticia are watching from. Flora says first poor Stella, and now this stranger. Julia goes back to the door and looks for anyone. She sees no one. She tells Flora they must get rid of the body. 

Melanie is looking for Julia. She calls to her mother. Flora appears and Melanie tells her that her father is dying. Julia says that the lottery will happen again before the week is over.

Our thoughts:  

John: While tending to her wound, Barnabas was applying compressions to Angelique's chest like he was ringing a bell to call a servant!

 

Christine: It's interesting that Barnabas has finally realized that he loves Angelique. Think of all the trouble he could have saved the family if he'd admitted it much sooner. 

                                                                                                                           

John: So for all intents and purposes, it looks like on this day we saw the 'finale' of Dark Shadows. Chronologically speaking, anyway. And lest anyone think that 1840 parallel time would continue with any relevance to the show, Trask has up and died, and his body already disposed of. At this point, I'm doubting we'll even see any more of our time band in 1840.

 
Christine: At least we know there are two happy couples, the kids will survive, and Flora will go on to flourish as a novelist. Perhaps she'll go exploring in the east wing and get the inspiration to pen "The Collins Lottery." 

John: I guess it's now safe to assume we'll ride out the remainder of the show's run watching this other soap opera play out. This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper.

 

Christine: It is disappointing to be whisked away to a parallel past without spending some time with the present day Collins family. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1160 12/4/70

Daniel revises his will when Gabriel wheels in. He demands that he give him the pen. Daniel calls him an ungrateful wretch. Gabriel complains that he was always second to Quentin. Daniel says Quentin is ten times the man that Gabriel is. He says that if Quentin had been the one to have the accident, he would have willed himself to walk again, rather than wallowing in self pity. Gabriel stands up and tells him that's enough. He walks to his father, and Daniel can't believe it. Gabriel explains that he's been able to walk for years, and waiting to get back at Quentin. He says that he killed Randall, and Quentin is going to pay for it. He grabs the will, and Daniel falls to the ground. Gabriel is concerned about his father, and tells him not to tell anyone. He gets back into his chair, and Samantha comes in and asks  what happened. He tells her to get Julia, and after she's gone he gets out of the chair and reviews the revised will, which reinstates Quentin as his heir.

Gerard asks Desmond if he's visited Quentin. He says he did. Gerard asks if they must have their differences, and says he wants to help him. Desmond asks who would want to get rid of Quentin, and why. He points out that Gerard is awfully friendly with Trask. He says that while Trask has his issue with Quentin, he doesn't believe that he would plant voodoo dolls, or kill Grimes' herd. He says there must be someone else. Gerard asks if he means him. He reminds Desmond that he's Quentin's best friend. He says Quentin doesn't have a chance for an acquittal, and Desmond disagrees. He says all of the evidence is circumstantial. He says Quentin will be cleared of the murder charge, and being Quentin's closest friend, that should put him at ease. He walks out and Gerard considers that murder will not be the charge against Quentin...

Samantha tells Gabriel that he doesn't have to stay by his father, because his presence may upset him. Daniel sits up and mentions Gabriel's name. Gabriel tells Samantha to leave, as his father wants to talk to him, and Daniel says he lived a life of lies. Samantha asks him what he's trying to say. He starts to say Gabriel can... and he falls back. Gabriel says that he's dead, and they'll never know what he was going to stay. He says things are going to change, and tells her to leave him alone with his father. Gabriel says he couldn't explain while he was alive, but he always did what he could to be like Quentin. 

Edith walks in, seemingly happy, saying Samantha just told her. She asks Gabriel what he's doing when he places Daniel's revised will in the fireplace. She asks if he made him have the attack. Gabriel tells her to never say that. He points out that he's the new master of Collinwood, and she'll do as he says. He sends her to Rose Cottage to tell them that Daniel is gone. She says he can send a servant, and he agrees, and reiterates his demand that she go.

Desmond is shocked to hear the news. Gabriel asks when, and who was there. Edith says that Gabriel was with him. Desmond asks if Quentin knows, and she says he does not. She says they sent for Trask. Desmond goes to tell Quentin, alone. Gerard says it's interesting that Gabriel was with Daniel. She says that he says he's getting all the money. She says he's holding that over her. She tells Gerard he's worse than Gabriel, as he told her he'd show her a way out of this. He tells her to look into his eyes. He tells her that he has powers, and she can have them, too, if she follows his master. She doesn't understand, saying he only serves himself. He tells her that he has powers, telling her if she touches his hand, it will burn her. She touches it and recoils in fear. He asks her to touch it again. She does, and says it's cold. She asks him to teach her his powers. He explains there is no turning back once she joins his group. He tells her to repeat his words, and begins a Devil incantation. She does. At the end of the ceremony, Gerard kisses her.

Desmond tells Gabriel and Samantha how upset Quentin was. He said that if he had been with his father, he could have made it up to him, and instead he died believing he was a warlock. Samantha says he should have thought about that sooner, and Desmond reiterates his innocence. Gabriel says that Quentin's remorse is genuine, because it isn't every day that one loses a fortune. Samantha says that Gabriel talks as if he's already read the will. She says that if Daniel changed it after Quentin went to jail, it would have been to give everything to Tad. Gabriel says that they should read it now. Desmond disagrees. Gabriel tells him to go to his father's safe and get it, and Samantha agrees. Desmond reluctantly agrees. He leaves, and Gabriel says he will be just as kind as she was when his father was locked in the tower room, and Quentin was lost at sea. He tells her that he'll let her and Tad stay in a room, and provide a very small allowance. 

Edith returns to Collinwood, and Gabriel asks why she didn't return with Desmond. He suggests that she chose to stay with Gerard. She says she did. He tells her she won't see much more of him, and tells her to go to her room. Gerard enters and offers his condolences. Gabriel tells Edith to go to her room again, and asks Gerard to wheel him into the drawing room. 

He tells Gerard that they're going to read the will. Gerard says that he hopes Gabriel will remember him for being a little help to him. He adds that he should receive a little reward of Gabriel's choosing. Gabriel says that Gerard saved his life. He says that as soon as the will is read, he wants him out of the house, and he is never to return. Samantha returns and says she will not stay in the same room with Gabriel. She says it's none of his business. He explains he was a witness to the will, and she asks if he's seen it. Desmond returns with the will, and Edith joins them. Gabriel demands that Desmond open and read it. Gabriel asks everyone to sit down. Gabriel opens the envelope, and begins reading the will. Gabriel asks who gets it, and Desmond's only words are, "Oh my God."

Our thoughts: 

John: Poor Daniel. How many times does one character have to die in a single scene? And really, to what end. Just the tease that he might turn the tables on Gabriel, not that it necessarily would have mattered to any of the other vultures that might be present.

 

Christine: The tease was solely for our benefit, so we might have a moment of thinking the jig was up for Gabriel. 

 

John: I guess it didn't matter that Edith didn't recite the exact Devil-worshiping words that Gerard fed her. I imagine the Devil is pretty willing to play fast and loose with those kind of specifics... What he didn't seem to require was that she forget everything, so I wonder how long before she spills the beans that she too is in league with the Devil.

 
Christine: Unlike Daphne, she has willingly joined his "little group," and the first rule of Devil's club is you don't talk about Devil's club, aka the coven. She is kind of dumb, though, so I could see her boasting that she could put a hex on Gabriel if he pushes her to it. 

John: Damn. That's a pretty ruthless cliffhanger for Friday. It was pretty clear that Gabriel would not be the beneficiary, but it's not clear who would be the new master of Collinwood... Everyone present is sure to be disappointed, which would leave someone not present — perhaps Barnabas? I guess we'll find out on Monday!

Christine: Now that's what a Friday cliffhanger should be! I have to believe Gerard will benefit in some way, otherwise why would he be there? Also, by superimposing the image of Desmond at the end of the episode over the drawing room scene, it seems clear he was looking at Gerard when stating OMG. I hope we get to see Gabriel cry. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1159 12/3/70

Gerard comes into the drawing room and asks Valerie if she feels alright. She says she does, and drops his watch fob. He asks where she found it, and she says it was on the floor. She says he probably lost it when the gypsy was reading his palm. He says he thought he lost it, and wouldn't know what to tell Quentin. She asks why, and he explains that Quentin gave it to him, which may explain her seeing a vision of Quentin in the fire. Gerard asks if he said something to upset her. She asks to confirm that Quentin gave him the watch, and he says he did when they were on the sea together. 

He brings up when he called her Miranda. He says he realized why he did that. He found a journal of a Judah Zachery that Desmond had, and a woman named Miranda was described, which Valerie resembled. She asks if the journal belonged to Desmond, and Gerard says Quentin may have bought it. She tells Gerard that she's glad they had a chance to talk, and thinks they will be good friends. He kisses he hand and bids her goodnight. Angelique is now convinced that Quentin is possessed by Zachery. She proudly thinks that she'll be responsible for the second beheading of Zachery.

Gabriel tends to his father, thinking that he's the heir apparent. Daniel asks for some peace of mind. He asks why Gabriel is there, rather in church praying for the soul of his brother.

Barnabas arrives at Collinwood. Angelique asks if he's there to see his dear sister. He says they have nothing to say to one another after what she did to Roxanne and Julia. He says she's lucky she didn't succeed — he would have killed her if she had. She asks if he's that devoted to Julia, and he admits that he is. She's surprised that he continues to survive despite choosing such atrocious friends. She says he'll soon find out the truth about Quentin, and when he comes to her for begging for help, she won't give it.

Barnabas is in the drawing room when Daphne walks in. She asks if he heard about Quentin, and he tells her that he's already seen him. He says he plans to talk to Daniel to try and convince him that Quentin is innocent. Daphne finds a letter on the ground, and asks if anyone else was in the room. He explains that Valerie was, and Daphne turns and runs out, holding the letter. Gerard watches from the top of the stairs as she leaves. 

Daphne goes to the gazebo and reads the note. It says she has not heeded her warning, so she shall protect and watch over her. Gerard arrives and asks her what the letter says. She shows it to him, and says it means Joanna is in the house. Gerard says there must be an explanation, either natural or supernatural. He tells her not to share it with anyone, as it might be used against Quentin. He reminds her that he's the only one she can count on now that Quentin is gone. She says he's not gone. Gerard tells her that he can help her. He says she's the only one she can count on, and tells her Quentin told him to look after her. He kisses her. She pulls away and asks why she does the things she does when she's near him. She runs back to the house. 

Gabriel receives a letter from Quentin. He assumes he's trying to get Daniel to change his mind. He decides not to give the letter to him. Barnabas comes downstairs and says he heard the messenger say there was a message from Daniel from Quentin. Barnabas offers to deliver it personally, and takes it from Gabriel.

Barnabas thanks Daniel for letting him read the letter. He tells Daniel that it further convinces him of Quentin's innocence. Daniel says that there's a bit of a politician in Quentin. Barnabas urges Daniel to reconsider changing his will. He says he could not find a way to give Quentin the benefit of the doubt. Barnabas describes how he was moved by the way he spoke of Daniel. Daniel is surprised. Barnabas says he was counting on his father, above all others, to stand by him, believing him innocent until proven guilty. Daniel explains that he will think on it, but cannot make a decision at this time.

Returning to Collinwood, Daphne says that Gerard doesn't need to follow her in. She asks him if he smels perfume. He says he does. She says it's just what Joanna used to wear. Gerard asks if that might just have been someone wearing the same perfume. Daphne is shocked to find a purse and gloves that were Joanna's in the drawing room. Gerard asks whey Joanna wouldn't appear and tell her what she needed to know if she actually came back? He suggests that Daphne go upstairs to rest. She does, and he examines the purse and gloves. 

Gabriel wheels in and asks Gerard where he's been. He explains that Barnabas has been with Daniel for over an hour, and he took a letter from Quentin to him. He's concerned that Barnabas and Quentin will change Daniel's mind. Barnabas comes downstairs, and Gerard offers to go speak to Daniel. Gabriel calls Barnabas into the drawing room, and says that he should have taken his father the letter. Barnabas says he's not sure that he would have gotten it from his hand. He turns to leave, and Gabriel tells him there will be a new regime shortly, and he warns him that interference with family plans will not be tolerated.

Gerard comes downstairs, and tells Gabriel that all he could get out of Daniel is that he plans to see Desmond in the morning. He says it's clear that Daniel intends to revise the will once again.

Daniel works on the will when Gabriel wheels in. He accuses his father of changing his will again. He demands that he give him the pen. Daniel calls him an ungrateful wretch. Gabriel complains that he was always second to Quentin. Daniel says Quentin is ten times the man that Gabriel is. He says that if Quentin had been the one to have the accident, he would have willed himself to walk, rather than wallowing is self pity. Gabriel stands up and tells him that's enough. Our thoughts: 

John: Well that was awkward. After the setup of Quentin as the embodiment of Zachery, I thought that Gerard's revelation that the watch fob came from Quentin might explain why she saw his face instead of Gerard. But instead, it looks like Gerard was doubling down with the journal mention, and managed to successfully convince Angelique that Quentin truly is possessed by Zachery. I thought she was smarter than that...

 

Christine: She is smarter than that, which leaves me feeling extremely irritated with the writers. It doesn't make much sense that Judah would possess Quentin so he could get himself beheaded again. Hopefully she'll realize her error sooner rather than later so we can have a good old fashioned witch duel. 

 

John: So... do you think Joanna smells of lilacs, like Daphne's ghost, or jasmine, like Josette's? Or perhaps seaweed, like Bill Malloy's?

 
Christine: No doubt she comes up smelling like roses. Barnabas returns to express his undeniable devotion to Julia after being absent for 10 episodes, and you're talking about the smell of Joanna's ghost? 

John: I knew it! Of course, it's somewhat ridiculous to think that Gabriel has been able to walk for years, and just continued to roll around in the wheelchair in some sort of long-game charade, as if he was waiting for just the right moment to get his revenge on his brother... when he's accused of witchcraft?

Christine: I think he was faking disability so he could continue to work on Quentin's guilt for being responsible for it. Still, the dramatic tossing of the quilt as he shocked his father by standing was well played. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1139 11/5/70

Gerard looks around in the tomb. He sees the hand extending from the rubble. He smiles when he sees the mask. He lifts it up, revealing Zachery's head. 

 

Trask gloats as he tells Barnabas that Roxanne has agreed to marry him. He says that Barnabas and Julia will be invited to the wedding. Trask goes upstairs to tell Samantha. Barnabas says he must speak to Roxanne. Julia tells him that he cannot, or Angelique will do what she threatened to do. He asks Julia to go see Roxanne in his place. 

Back in his room, Gerard admires the mask. He then looks at the head he replaced in the box, and tells Zachery to open his eyes and show him what powers he has. He explains that he's in his hands now, and all of his secrets will be his. Nothing happens. Gerard wonders if he imagined his eyes being open in the tomb. He lies down to sleep.

Julia asks Roxanne if she loves Trask, or if she's doing this because Barnabas rejected her. Roxanne says it's curious that he sent Julia to talk to him. Julia explains that he has a complicated relationship with his wife, and wants Roxanne to be happy.

Julia tells Barnabas that she thinks she got through to Roxanne. She goes up to bed, leaving Barnabas in the drawing room. He hears the front door open, and is surprised to see Roxanne. She tells him she's not going to marry Lamar Trask. She tells him that she loves him, and no one will stand in their way. He says he wishes it were possible. She asks him to tell her that he loves her. He does, and kisses her, as Angelique walks in on them. Barnabas says it isn't what she thinks it is, and Roxanne says it is. She tells her that he loves her, and she loves him, and she won't give him up. Barnabas asks Roxanne to let him speak to his wife. She does, saying nothing will change her mind. Barnabas tells Angelique that it was a temporary emotional outburst. He says she came to him, and promises she will not return to him again. Angelique walks out on him. Julia comes in and asks what he thinks she'll do.

Roxanne tells Trask there will not be a wedding. He's shocked. He asks who persuaded her to change her mind. He asks her where she was. She says she went to Collinwood to see Barnabas — the man she loves. He accuses Barnabas of having some kind of strange hold over her.

Angelique tells a Roxanne voodoo-doll that she'll only have Barnabas on her terms.

Roxanne tells Trask that she could never love him. She says she has always hated him.

Angelique pokes the doll.

Roxanne moans, and tells Trask to leave. He says he's going to find Barnabas and get to the bottom of this.

Trask arrives at Collinwod, screaming for Barnabas. He says Roxanne has been acting irrationally, and now seems to be suffering great pain. Julia tells him to take her to Roxanne. He does.

Roxanne is passed out with a bloody wound on her neck when Julia arrives. She says Barnabas, and then dies. Trask tells Julia that Barnabas will pay for this. He says he knew there was something evil about him. He says that he will someday know his secret.

Barnabas says he hoped Angelique would understand, but he was not enough of a fool to think she would. He says he must find a way to destroy her. Julia reminds him that Roxanne will rise, and he admits that they must put her to her final rest. They arrange to meet at dusk to decide what to do.

Gerard wakes up and notices the mask is gone. He looks around and sees it next to the head in the box. He grabs it and confirms that his door was locked. He sees Zachery's journal on the desk. He opens it up and finds a new entry in his own hand. It says "My body has been destroyed and can never be replaced. I will live again." He sees the handwriting then changes from his. He flips to an earlier entry and finds the same handwriting. He reads, "I will live again with the help of one who craves the power I can bestow on him." 

He goes to the head and asks what the writing means. Gerard says masks and journals don't move around by themselves. There's a knock on his door. He covers the head and answers it. Trask comes in and asks who he was speaking to. Gerard says he was having a nightmare. He asks what he wants, and Trask tells him Roxanne is dead. He says he thinks her death was an act of sorcery. He says he thinks Barnabas is responsible. He says they must intensify their investigation into Barnabas' background. He says that together, they can learn Barnabas' secret before he victimizes others.

Gerard arrives at Collinwood and asks Julia if she has seen Leticia. Julia suggests that she might be at Rose Cottage. Gerard snaps at her. He seems upset, but makes time for a drink. Julia leaves him. Angelique comes downstairs and introduces herself to Gerard. He looks at her and says that her name was Miranda.

Our thoughts: 

John: When Gerard found the mask, Zachery was clearly breathing... not very convincing if he's supposed to have been separated from his body!

 

Christine: Perhaps he was experiencing phantom lung. After seeing Gerard swoon over the mask, I realized I wrongly assumed Zachery had possessed him in yesterday's episode, though I was correct about him sticking his head back in a box. I would have assumed the head box had been destroyed in the blast, but perhaps he was able to find an identical box so Judah Z's head could feel at home. 

 

John: Oh, Barnabas, the babes are always going to be your weakness. And now you've gone and gotten another one killed. Of course her coming back as a vampire gives him a second shot at her, so he can't be that upset.

 
Christine: How is it that Roxanne was a vampire in 1970 before Julia had traveled to the past and released 1840 Barnabas from his coffin so he could subsequently give her a love bite? That conundrum aside, if she was so in love with Barnabas, wouldn't she have instantly recognized him when she encountered him in 1970? Incidentally, I just have to point out how fun it is to watch Trask go from gleeful gloating to his familial menacing hatred. 

John: Couldn't they have bothered to make Zachery's journal match what Gerard says that it said? Gerard's last scene in Collinwood was awfully strange. He frantically looks for Leticia, gets snippy with Julia, and then introduces a new bit of history... Angelique as Miranda...

 

Christine: It's interesting that not only did Gerard's handwriting change, but it appears he may have also picked up a different quill pen to write with. That last scene was strange, but I wonder if the jarring cut that preceded it indicated something got edited out that would have explained why Gerard showed up at Collinwood with such a huge chip on his shoulder. It was funny that he told Julia that he did not know where he'd be in the future, though it was an odd way to respond to her asking where to tell Leticia to find him when she saw her.
