Stokes tells Adam that what he wants may not be wrong, but using Vicki to get it is wrong. Adam says he wants to be loved, and he will have a mate, or Barnabas will be punished by seeing Vicki die. Stokes asks Adam who has been teaching him all the wrong things. He accuses Nicholas Blair. Adam says he has listened to no one. Stokes tells Adam that Vicki loves someone else, and asks how that man feels. Stokes asks Adam how he'd feel if someone threatened Carolyn the same way he's threatening Vicki.

Julia returns to the old house, and tells Barnabas she tried to see Jennings. She said she was unable to see him, but another doctor said that the wound appeared to be from an animal's fangs. Barnabas says he went to Stokes' house, and he seemed surprised by his claims about Adam. He says Stokes agreed to help them, and would go to where Adam is hiding to convince him to release Vicki. He says that now they must wait, and hope that Stokes succeeds.

Stokes arrives at the old house, and says he spoke with Adam for more than an hour. He says he doesn't want to give them hope when there may be none. He says that Adam refused to do what Stokes asked, but his final appeal may have reached him. Barnabas asks if Vicki is alright, and Stokes says he assumes so, but he didn't see her. He says that Adam knows that if he harms Vicki, there is no chance of his getting what he wants. Barnabas says that Adam's hopes are entirely up to Julia. Barnabas asks Stokes if he was able to determine if someone influenced Adam. Stokes says he told Adam he thought it was Blair, but he denied it. Barnabas asks what Blair could stand to gain, and Stokes says he doesn't know, but he agrees Blair is an evil man. Stokes excuses himself, and asks that they call him as soon as they know what Adam has decided.

Adam thinks about how he would feel if someone took and killed Carolyn, and realizes what he has done is wrong.

Blair relaxes in his house in his smoking jacket. He assumes Barnabas will agree to go along with the experiment, Vicki will go free, Adam will be happy, and he will gain the most from the deal. There's a knock at the door, and Blair is surprised to see Adam. He says he's concerned about Vicki, and wants to see her. He says he's going to take her with him. Blair asks if Barnabas has agreed to what he wants, and Adam says no. Blair says he can't take Vicki, and Adam tells him that Vicki is innocent. Blair suggests that someone has given him the 'do unto others' message. He asks who told him it was wrong to hold Vicki hostage. Adam says it was Stokes. Blair tells him Stokes lied to him. Adam says the issue is between he and Barnabas, and not Vicki. Blair asks how he will get Barnabas to help him if he sets Vicki free. Blair says Adam only feels bad because Stokes wanted him to feel bad. Adam is confused.

Blair asks why Stokes came to see him. He asks if Stokes is helping him or Barnabas? Adam asks if Blair thinks Stokes is trying to trick him. Blair says as long as Adam has Vicki, Barnabas has to go through with the experiment. If he sets her free, he will always be lonely. Blair says that Adam hasn't hurt Vicki, and he has no intention of hurting her—as long as Barnabas helps. He adds that Barnabas will not let him hurt Vicki. He says if Adam gives in first, Barnabas wins. If Barnabas gives in first, then Adam wins. Blair tells Adam he'll take him to show him that Vicki is safe, and then he can go see Barnabas.

Barnabas and Julia await Adam's arrival. They discuss how they should have killed Adam in the lab. There's a knock at the door, and Barnabas lets Adam in. Barnabas asks what his decision is. Adam says the choice is Barnabas'. He says Stokes tried to trick him. He says that Vicki is safe. Julia says she needs more time, and Adam says he needs an answer now. Barnabas tells her they have no choice. Julia says she can't let Vicki die. She tells Adam that she will try, but she can't guarantee that she will be successful. Barnabas says they will start the experiment when he releases Vicki, and he says he will release her once the experiment is finished. Barnabas says that they will not go through with the experiment if he does not release Vicki first.

Adam agrees. He says he will let Vicki go free, and warns him that if he tries to trick him, he will kill Vicki, and then kill every member of the Collins family.

Our thoughts

John: Since everyone is pretty clear that Blair is the mastermind of Adam's plan, how come no one has confronted him?

Christine: I think no one's confronted him because they sense he's an evil, bad man who's way more powerful than Angelique ever was. By the way, props watchers may have noticed that Blair has obtained the mirror from Adam's room in the West Wing, though he appears to have cleaned it up a bit. Now we know why Adam got a new mirror. Blair spirited away the old one!

John: Nice tete-a-tete between Stokes and Blair today, with Adam the unwitting pawn between them. Just when it looked like Stokes had reached him, Blair was able to introduce sufficient doubt, and convince Adam he was being manipulated.

Christine: I don't think you can call it a tête-à-tête when their têtes were not together, though I get what you're saying, as they seemed to be having the age old battle of wills between right and wrong. This is what I was picturing:

John: So we end today's episode with everyone getting what they want... sort of. We'll see if Blair agrees to release Vicki. And then the search for Mrs. Collinwood Corpse must begin...

Christine: Barnabas says he should have followed his first instinct in the laboratory the day Adam was created, and Julia agrees he should have killed Adam then. I guess they forgot what little they know about the connection between Adam and Barnabas, or would have realized that killing him then would have made Cassandra's dream curse on Barnabas unnecessary.
