Carolyn calls Professor Stokes and says she needs to see him immediately. She says Adam can't stay in Collinwood any longer.

Stokes waits in the drawing room for Carolyn. Vicki walks in and says she wanted to see him, as she too needs his help. He's gruff with her, and then apologizes when she starts to leave. She explains that Cassandra has left, and that Angelique's image disappeared from the canvas. He says that perhaps her reign of terror has ended. He assumes Blair has left, and is surprised when Vicki explains that he's moved into another Collins house. Carolyn comes in, and asks Vicki if she'll leave them alone.

Carolyn tells Stokes that he must take Adam tonight. He asks if he's misbehaved. She tells him that Adam is growing up. She says he's very sweet and bright, and is learning quickly. Stokes asks why he must leave, and she says Adam locked her in his room with him, and threatened she must fall in love with him.

Jeff and Vicki kiss on the patio. He asks her what her favorite day of the month is, and she tells him September. When he reiterates that he needs a day, she says the 24th. He tells her that's the day they will be married. Vicki is less than enthusiastic.

She sits down, and Jeff awkwardly keeps talking. He tells her he wanted to wait until he found out more about himself, but he didn't know how long that would take. They kiss, and he gives her a ring. He says it's old fashioned, and reminded him of her. He places the ring on her finger and kisses her again. He then says he fears he might lose her. We see Adam watching them from his window.

Outside his room, Stokes says he must see Adam alone. Carolyn leaves him to go in alone. Adam greets Stokes the way he was taught. He then says he taught him wrong. Adam says he should not always be polite. As a man, he must grab what he wants. Adam asks Stokes if he believes in love, and Stokes says for some people. Adam tells Stokes that he loves Carolyn, and he must tell her so she'll love him. Stokes tries to explain that love is not that simple. He describes Carolyn as sophisticated, with money, and the freedom to do as she likes. He says she will likely marry someone like her. Adam says she will marry him and he will make her love him. Stokes says that may not be possible.

Stokes asks Adam what his first memory is. Adam says Barnabas. Stokes explains that his first memory is from two months ago. Adam asks where he was before that, and demands the truth. Stokes tells him that he did not exist, and says he prays he's mature enough to hear that. Adam demands to know more. Stokes describes Lang's experiment, which resulted in Adam living.

He says in time, Adam will be indistinguishable from the rest of society. He says only he, Barnabas and Julia know his history, and they won't tell. Adam says Barnabas knows, and then recites a bit of Lang's recording. Stokes doesn't understand. Adam yells at him, telling him he's not his friend, and demanding that he leave. Stokes apologizes and leaves Adam alone, thinking about Barnabas.

Carolyn asks Stokes what he told Adam. He says he told him many things, including that she wouldn't love him. He adds that he's no longer his friend. She asks what she's supposed to do. He suggests her having someone else take Adam his food, and she says Mrs. Johnson's son can do that.

Adam looks in the mirror at his scarred face. He breaks the mirror.

He picks up the knife next to his food. He says that Barnabas knew. He says Carolyn hates him because he's not like other people and stabs himself with the knife.

Our thoughts

John: I love that Stokes asks Carolyn if she's much given to melodrama, and then decides he'll find out for himself. Having seen the entire series up to this point, we can save him some time. Yes, Professor, she is.

Christine: It's rather odd that it wasn't explained how Carolyn escaped Adam's manhandling from yesterday's episode, and even stranger still that she wasn't more traumatized by the experience.

John: Vicki doesn't seem too thrilled by Jeff's proposal. Do you think she's still harboring feelings for Burke?

Christine: Her lack of enthusiasm is understandable. It's not like Jeff Clark has a lot going for him, though Vicki's fiancés have a tendency to die, so perhaps she's just a little gun-shy. I'm wondering how her unemployed beau could afford that nice engagement ring.

John: By this time, shouldn't Adam have cleaned up the cobwebs in his own room? It sure seems like someone needs to take Adam out before someone in Collinwood gets hurt. Of course there's another alternative for them to take from the Frankenstein playbook. Who will bring about the Bride of Adam?

Christine: I'm not sure Stokes' recommendation to have Harry Johnson care for him is a good one. He may treat him even worse than Willie did.
