Dark Shadows Episode 781 - 6/23/69

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Barnabas is in the old house when Trask arrives. He points out that the Reverand is out late, and Trask says that as long as it is still dark, it's not too late for Barnabas. Trask accuses Barnabas of Carl's murder. He says he knows Barnabas is a foul and evil creature. Trask pulls out his cross and tells him not to come any closer. Barnabas turns away, saying that Trask has no facts. Trask says that Carl told him what he is, after seeing him in his coffin. Trask says he's there to get proof.

Trask tells him that if he's innocent, he has nothing to fear, not even the dawn of a new day. He challenges Barnabas to stay up with him until the sun rises. He says that if Barnabas survives the dawn, he will believe he is innocent. Barnabas tells him that they will meet again, and he will deal with him as he dealt with his ancestor before him. He disappears, and Trask shouts out that now he knows Barnabas' secret, and he will destroy him.

Barnabas opens his coffin, which is in the secret room off the drawing room.

Edward calls the sheriff to let him know that his brother Carl is dead. Trask returns to Collinwood, and Edward is angry that he left after Carl's body had been discovered. Trask invites Edward into the drawing room, and tells him that the source of evil that has plagued the house is his cousin, Barnabas. He says Carl found Barnabas' secret, and he was able to tell him before Barnabas killed him. He explains that Barnabas is a vampire. Edward says that Dirk was the vampire, and Trask says that he was a diversion created by Barnabas so that he wouldn't be suspected. Trask says that he challenged Barnabas to wait for the dawn with him, and he vanished before his very eyes, in order to save himself. Edward says he believes him. Trask says that they must find Barnabas and destroy him. He suspects his coffin is at the old house, but Edward says that if Trask knows about him, there's no way he would hide in the old house. Edward says that they will find Barnabas without involving the police, to ensure that no one else finds out about this family secret.

Magda comes up from the basement to hear a knock at the door. Edward and Trask come in, demanding to know where Barnabas is. She says he's away for the day, and Edward accuses her of lying. Trask grabs her and says that she's been helping him, and she will be punished if she doesn't cooperate. He asks her where Barnabas keeps his coffin. Edward says they will search the entire house. She tells them to go ahead and search. Trask offers her one more chance, and slaps her. He tells her God will smite her for the sins she has committed. Magda tells him he has made a mistake. She warns him that she will never be far behind him.

In the drawing room, Trask reviews papers. Edward comes in and confirms that he got silver bullets from Braithwaite. Edward asks if he's reviewed the plans, and Trask says there are four secret rooms or passageways in the old house, and they will begin with the one behind the drawing room.

Barnabas rises from his coffin.

Magda comes downstairs in the old house to see Barnabas come out of the secret room. She says he'll have to move the coffin again. She asks where he'll go, offering to help him. He says her sympathy is disturbing. He admits that Sandor will be free if he is destroyed, and she says she'd rather see him live than have Trask get his way. There's a knock at the door. Barnabas returns to the secret room. Trask tells her to get out of the way, and that they are going to search the secret room. Edward threatens to shoot her. She steps aside. Trask approaches the bookcase, and manages to open it. Inside they find a coffin, but when Trask opens it, they find it empty. Edward says that Magda knows where Barnabas is. They return to the drawing room, but she's gone. Trask says Barnabas will have to return to his coffin before morning, and when he does, it will no longer be usable.

Trask asks if Edward wants him to stay with him, and Edward says he is safe with the gun. Trask says he will return by dawn.

Barnabas appears in the secret room.

Edward hears something, but doesn't investigate further.

Barnabas sees that the coffin is chained shut, with a cross on top of it.

Charity is in her room when she hears a bat. She turns and sees Barnabas. He tells her that her father knows about him, and he needs her help. He tells her that she must hide him at the school and protect him. She says her father always finds out when she tries to hide something from him. Barnabas tells her to look into his eyes. She does, and cannot resist him. He tells her that he must find another coffin to rest in, and a small amount of earth from the grave in the basement of the old house. She must get that for him. He says that Edward is guarding the house, and tells her a secret entrance to the old house so that she won't be seen.

Edward continues to wait for Barnabas' return.

Charity collects the earth from the basement of the old house, but not before knocking over a candlestick.

Edward hears something and calls down into the basement. He descends the stairs. Charity cowers in the shadows. He sees her shadow, and demands that she come out. She steps into the light.

Our thoughts

John: One of the downsides of the low grade chroma key effect is that it doesn't allow for surprises. As soon as you see the edge around Barnabas, you knew it was only time before he disappeared...

Christine: It certainly is a dead giveaway.

John: How quickly Edward became a vampire hunter! Odd that right after saying he was sure Barnabas wouldn't be hiding at the old house, he says they should go to the old house to finish things.

Christine: He must have read the Van Helsing diaries.

John: Wouldn't destroying Barnabas' coffin be easier than decopauging it? Still, shame on Barnabas for not already having back-up lodgings prepared. A forward thinking vampire wouldn't need to carry a single coffin with him everywhere he goes. Still, it will be quite interesting to see how this revelation impacts the family relationships moving forward. Will Edward have to die like Carl?

Christine: Destroying it would have been effective, but the cross decal was Trask's way of giving Barnabas the middle finger. Dirk, Angelique, and Tom Jennings were all able to provide themselves with a coffin at a moment's notice, so I would think Barnabas could do the same, though this is the first time we've heard that he needs soil from his original coffin to make for a comfy guest coffin. He should exercise caution before killing any more Collins family members or he may end the family line instead of fulfilling his mission to protect it. I expect Charity to get her name entered into Trask's Punishment Book in tomorrow's episode.

Dark Shadows Episode 411 - 1/22/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

In the secret room of the Collins family crypt, Angelique opens the coffin and prepares to drive the stake through Barnabas' heart. She raises her mallet when he opens his eyes, reaches out and clutches her throat.

Barnabas closes the coffin as Angelique cowers in the corner. He asks what she was about to do.

Outside, Ben hears them and realizes Barnabas has come back from the dead.

Barnabas wants to know what's going on, and Angelique says she can't. He recalls being in bed, delirious with fever and afraid he would die. He realizes he was in the coffin because he was dead. Angelique confirms that he's returned from the dead. He asks how and why, and she says he'll know soon enough. He recalls how she cursed him, and the bat that attacked him. She says she tried to prevent his death but failed. He realizes that she came to prevent him from returning. He asks what she's afraid of, realizing she's now afraid of him, because she no longer has power over him. He tells her she'll use her powers for the right purpose after she tells him what she has done to him. She says the curse has made him one of the living dead, but he must live at night, and return to his coffin by day. He asks about the other part of the curse—that anyone who loved him would die. He says she'll be the first victim of that curse, and he strangles her to death.

Her lifeless body slips to the ground.

He pulls the lever to open the door and finds Ben outside the secret door. He explains that Angelique made him come there. Barnabas tells Ben that he killed her, and closes the door behind him. Ben says she told him that Barnabas would rise from the dead. Barnabas tells Ben that he's no longer really human. The rest of the world thinks he's dead, and no one can tell them otherwise. Ben assures him that he's always been loyal to him, and would never harm him. Ben says he can help Barnabas, protecting him during the day, and will keep his secret. Barnabas accepts his help. He says the first thing they have to do is dispose of Angelique's body. Barnabas hears someone outside.

Joshua approaches the family crypt.

Barnabas enters the secret room and leaves Ben in the crypt. Joshua enters to find Ben and asks him what he's doing. Ben says he came to pay his respects to Barnabas. Joshua said he heard voices, and asks who he was with. He says he was saying a prayer for Barnabas. Joshua says they could be hiding in the secret room, He tells Ben to stand aside and he opens the door. A bat flies out into the night. He asks Ben how it got in there. They look into the secret room and find it empty. Ben asks if he can stay to pay his respects, and Joshua agrees, telling him that he's to report to the new house first thing in the morning.

Joshua leaves, and Ben re-enters the secret chamber. He opens the coffin and finds Angelique's body inside.

In the cemetery, Barnabas appears before Ben. He says he has new powers. Ben explains he's been digging a grave in the woods. Barnabas says he must return to the mausoleum, as it will be dawn soon. As they enter the secret room, Ben notices Barnabas' mouth is covered with blood. Barnabas tells him he cannot survive without blood. He tells Ben he'll hear stories tomorrow about a woman attacked by an animal, but it was him. He says he should have let Angelique drive the stake through his heart.

Our thoughts

John: Pretty smart of Joshua to have built the secret chamber in the family crypt. I'll bet he never knew it would come in this handy.

Christine: In the last episode, Ben said that Joshua had it built during the war to hide guns. He also said he brought Ben there his first day of work and told him to clean it up, as it should always be ready. It makes no sense that he would share that secret with a convict who he had just met, but I am curious to know what he wanted that room to be ready for, and why it was so messy to begin with.

John: How come the candles were lit in the secret room? Was it so the crew member sitting in the corner wouldn't be scared?

Christine: After all the time we've spent in the darkened secret coffin room, the addition of a candelabra was truly ludicrous, especially since it wasn't there yesterday, so I think your supposition must be correct.

John: If Barnabas felt so bad about being a vampire, why not let Ben use the stake and mallet Angelique left behind to finish him off? Of course I'm glad he didn't.

Christine: Barnabas really woke up on the wrong side of the coffin, with a drastic change in his demeanor. I think he he didn't ask Ben to stake him because he is secretly enjoying his newfound power and is probably anxious to reconnect with Josette. We've come a long way from seeing part of Jason McGuire's corpse from afar after Barnabas strangled him in Episode 276, to seeing a close up of Angelique's wide-eyed death stare today. Bloody great episode today!

Get that vampire a napkin! He's a real messy eater!

Barnabas' first throat throttle.

"There's been a drastic change in my life. I am no longer really human."

Dark Shadows Episode 469 - 4/11/68

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

Someone sneaks into the Collins's family mausoleum.

Julia and Vicki approach the mausoleum and enter it. Vicki gasps when she sees a man lurking in the shadows. She calls him Peter. Julia asks who he is, and he introduces himself as Jeff Clark. He's not clear how he got there. Vicki says the last time she saw Peter safe was in the secret room in the back of the mausoleum. She asks Peter if he remembers, and he yells that his name is Jeff Clark. He doesn't understand why, but all the talk of guns and secret rooms is bothering him. Julia asks Vicki where the secret room is.

Vicki points to the wall that moves. She says that one of the secret panels moves, but she doesn't remember how to get in. Jeff walks over to the back wall, reaches up, and pulls the lever in the lion's mouth. The door swings open, revealing a coffin inside.

They go inside and explore the secret room. Vicki is convinced she did go back in time. She asks Jeff if the coffin means anything to him. He says no. She asks how he knew how to open the secret door, and he tells her it just came to him. Vicki suggests Julia knew about the room before tonight, because she did her best to keep her from returning to it. Julia denies it, saying she would have no reason to hide such knowledge.

Jeff tells her she found what she was looking for, so they can leave now. Vicki says she's starting to remember what happened to her. Julia asks her what she remembers. She says that in a dream, Daniel was being strangled by Nathan Forbes, and then she woke when he Daniel ran in, saying he was being chased. Daniel went to get help, and when she heard him screaming, Vicki says she went out with the gun Peter had given her. That's when she found Noah struggling with him, and shot him. Julia asks her about the secret of the room. Vicki says she doesn't remember, but the coffin wasn't present when she was hiding in the room. Jeff opens the coffin, and it is empty.

In the hospital, Barnabas sits up in his bed. He calls for Doctor Lang.

He gets out of bed and goes out on the balcony. He hears dogs in the distance. He continues to call for Lang, who comes in. Barnabas tells him he felt as if someone was watching him. He says he also had the urge for blood. He says it has since passed, but wants to know why he felt that way. Lang says that until he completes his tests, he doesn't know how often or long relapses will last. Barnabas says that he lied to him. Lang explains that he will occasionally feel like he's slipping back. Barnabas realizes that he could revert to his former self. The doctor says it won't happen if he works with him and does as he says. Barnabas explains that he tried that once before and the results were disastrous. Lang offers him a cure that will last forever.

Julia visits Lang.  She apologizes for bothering him, but says it's very important. He saw her at the hospital earlier, and said he's surprised it took her so long to come see him. She asks if he promised Barnabas a permanent cure, and he confirms that he did. She asks for details, but he refuses to share his plan. She suggests she could help him. He asks why she's so interested in the welfare of Barnabas. She says that he has been her patient, and he asks if that's the only reason. She warns him that she will try to stop him if she thinks he's going to harm Barnabas. As she's leaving, Jeff Clark enters. It's clear that Lang and Clark didn't want anyone to know about their association.

Jeff tells Lang it wasn't the first time he saw Julia that night. They were all at the cemetery. Lang asks if they saw him digging. Jeff explains he was at Eagle Hill cemetery. Lang tells him he was supposed to go to Stanhope cemetery, clarifying there hasn't been a burial at Eagle Hill in 50 years. Lang tells him to go back to Stanhope and finish his job. Jeff says he doesn't want to. Seeing Vicki, he was ashamed. Lang says he won't have Jeff seeing Vicki any more. Lang explains that Barnabas is in love with, and wants to marry Vicki Winters. He doesn't want Jeff to interfere with that. He tells Jeff to get back out to the cemetery. Jeff says he'd rather go to the sanitarium, and Lang corrects him, calling it an institution for the criminally insane. Lang says he'll do what he's told, because he doesn't want Vicki to know that he's a murderer.

Our thoughts

John: Whose coffin is that in the secret room, anyway? Barnabas' should be in the old house, right? Unless there are spare empties scattered around Collinsport.

Christine: It's Barnabas' coffin in the secret room. He showed it to Julia in Episode 317 when he first brought her into the secret room and shared his fear that he might be chained forever in his coffin. It's fair to assume he had Willie knock together an exact replica in the basement of the Old House, and likely that he didn't want to rest in the same fetid coffin he'd spent almost 200 years in.

John: Isn't it great to see Julia in Dr. Woodard's position? Now she knows how it feels to be the outsider, longing to be included in the plans. I hope for her sake that she doesn't suffer the same fate he did!

Christine: I don't see it that way. She may not like that he's usurped her position as vampire healer, but she has reason to believe he does not have Barnabas' best interests at heart, which makes her right to press him for details on the lure of a permanent cure that he promises. At least she had the satisfaction of having the upper hand by finding out that he and Jeff Clark have something going on together. It really must have thrown Clark for a loop the way he was sweating bullets.

John: I'm very excited to see Dr. Frankenstein, I mean Dr. Langenstein... Scratch that—Dr. Lang has entered our story. We haven't yet reached the point where I originally entered the world of Dark Shadows in syndication, but this storyline is the first one I recall seeing. Can't wait to see how things develop in the weeks and months ahead.

Christine: I'm very impressed with Dr. Lang! He cured Barnabas of his urge to strangle, which is what he would have done in the past over his disappointment in finding out he wasn't completely cured, making the assumption that his dear doctor had lied to him. I love how Barnabas is screaming his head off in the hospital and Dr. Lang shows up and asks if something is wrong. Very astute physician at work! It seems there was a competition for best facial expression in today's episode.

First runner up: Barnabas' fangless thirsty face.

Second runner up: Julia's lying eyed grimace.

And the winner is...Dr. Lang! With the unsmiling smile. So devious!

Dark Shadows Episode 325 - 9/22/67

Amazon Prime members can stream today's episode free!

David stands in front of Barnabas' portrait, and hears the exchange they shared when Barnabas found him outside the family crypt in the Eagle Hill cemetery. He begins screaming to let him go, and when Liz comes into the foyer, David runs upstairs.

In his room, David has an internal dialogue in which he notes how Baranabas knew he was lying about being in the crypt. He wants Sarah to answer his questions about Barnabas. He calls for Sarah, and Vicki enters his room. She asks who he was talking to, and he dismisses her. She tells him it's time for him to go to bed. He says he wants to work with his stamps a little longer and she goes downstairs.

Vicki sees Liz about to leave, and asks where she's going. She says she's going to talk to Barnabas to see if he knows what might be bothering David. Vicki suggests having David talk to Burke once he's back. Liz asks if they've set a date for the wedding, and she says it should be after Burke buys the house. Liz expresses concern about David getting a new governess, and Vicki agrees to put off the wedding if needed to continue working with David. A knock at the door heralds Barnabas' arrival, and he asks Liz and Vicki both to join him in the drawing room.

Barnabas apologizes for what happened with Willie. He says he failed to help Willie, and he's distraught that he may have brought scandal to the family. Liz says he can't be held responsible for Willie's mind. Liz then asks Barnabas if something happened when he found David outside the mausoleum. She explains that for some reason, David has since become afraid. She asks if he may have said or done something that David might have misunderstood. Vicki says that David's fear is quite real. Barnabas offers to have a man-to-man talk with David.

Liz brings Barnabas into David's room. She leaves the two of them alone, and Barnabas says his aunt and Vicki are worried about him. He asks what David is frightened of. He asks if it's him. He then asks why he's afraid of him. He asks David about the secret he has. David denies that he has a secret. Barnabas says David was in the secret room in the family mausoleum. David continues to deny it. Barnabas shows David his knife, and asks how it got into the secret room. He asks David what other secrets Sarah told him. David denies any other secrets. Vicki comes in to check on them, and Barnabas says they'll continue their talk later.

David tosses and turns in bed. He relives the conversation with Sarah about the empty coffin. Next he replays Barnabas asking about the other secrets Sarah shared with him. In a dream, David looks for Sarah. He comes across a woman with her face in the shadows holding a medallion.

He leaves the figure behind and continues looking for Sarah. She appears, and he tells her it's time for her to answer questions. She describes being born in the same place as he was. She also describes how she died at age 9. He asks if she's dead, what she's doing and she says she's looking for someone. She leads him to a room with a coffin, but not in the secret room. The coffin begins to open and she says it's who she came to find, as Barnabas sits up and exits the coffin. Barnabas addresses Sarah and says she's come back at last. David tells her to look out, and Barnabas approaches him with his cane raised.

Our thoughts

John: Poor David. What he fears most is delivered directly to his bedroom by his aunt.

Christine: This episode is truly the stuff of kid nightmares. Barnabas advancing on David in his room, showing him proof that he was in the secret room of the mausoleum, and threatening that he'll be very angry if he finds out David is lying about what Sarah did or did not tell him sends chills. If that weren't bad enough, Barnabas seems able to cause nightmares simply by wishing a person pleasant dreams.

John: Why would David have a dream involving Julia? Will she soon be hypnotizing him to wipe his memory, too?

Christine: It's pretty obvious that's not Grayson Hall appearing as Julia in David's dream.

John: I'm thinking it's all a dream, and we'll find out on Monday. And if not, Barnabas and Sarah have finally been reunited.

Christine: I don't believe the coffin room in the cellar has ever had the expressionist qualities we see today, which suggests that he is indeed dreaming.
