Barnabas finds Ben locked in a cell of the cellar of the new house. He asks what Ben was doing in Abigail's room, and what he meant when he said he was sent by a witch. Ben says he just went there to rob her, and Barnabas doesn't believe him. He wants to know if the witch is Victoria Winters or Angelique—his wife. Barnabas presses him, knowing he wasn't trying to rob Abigail. He says he knows Ben is afraid of the person controlling his will. He says he is beginning to believe in the forces of evil. He asks point blank if Vicki is a witch, as she's in danger with Trask. He begs to know if she's innocent. Ben tells him he doesn't know, and asks him to leave him. Barnabas reminds Ben that he's never lied to him. Ben breaks a bottle over Barnabas' head and escapes, leaving Barnabas unconscious on the floor.
Joshua finds Barnabas locked in the cell in the basement. He thinks Barnabas helped Ben escape, and reminds Barnabas he was forbidden from entering the house. Barnabas tells his father that he doesn't believe Ben was robbing Abigail. He believes he was sent by a witch. Joshua dismisses the notion, and Barnabas reminds him that he himself disappeared for a few days. Joshua says if there is a witch, she has been caught. Barnabas asks his father if he believes Vicki is a witch. Barnabas asks if he'll let Vicki be imprisoned or killed by a charlatan. Joshua says that he owes Vicki nothing, and leaves.
Barnabas meets with Vicki. She says she's frightened, and they're speaking of a trial. He offers to help her, and asks if Trask found her. She says Trask told her the penalty for witchcraft is death by fire. Barnabas asks her to explain everything that happened to her the night before. She says she lay down on the bed crying when she heard Trask's voice. He mentioned fire, and she noticed a fire had started in her room. She ran downstairs and he caught her. Barnabas says he heard her, but when he went to her room, there was no evidence of fire. She asks if he thinks she left the room because she's a witch. She says that she knows her story of coming from a different time is strange, but she's not a witch. Vicki adds that the fire she saw was very strange. She tried to put it out, and her hands went into the flames, but weren't burned. She says the flames were all around, but it was more like she was touching ice—a cold sensation. Barnabas reiterates her statement of fire like ice. He recites the words he heard Angelique speaking. He tells Vicki that he had his doubts, but now he knows she's innocent, and he will do everything he can to help her. He leaves her to be locked back up. He wonders why Angelique was saying those words, and why she would lie about her whereabouts. He realizes that only Ben will be able to confirm his suspicions.
Ben is drinking by the waterfront, planning his escape from Collinwood and Angelique. Barnabas enters and tells Ben not to be afraid. He says he knew he would find him. Ben apologizes for hurting him. Barnabas tells him that he's safe because the witch has been caught and will be burned at the stake or hung. Ben asks who he means, and Barnabas says Victoria Winters, of course. Ben asked if she confessed, and Barnabas says the evidence was overwhelming. Ben says it's a terrible way to die, and Barnabas reiterates that she must be destroyed. He plays Ben like a fiddle, telling him that if Angelique was the witch, Ben would have warned him by now. He, and Sarah, and his parents would all be at risk, but they'll all be safe since Angelique is not the witch. Ben asks Barnabas what if he knew who the witch was, but was unable to speak her name while under her control. Barnabas reminds Ben that he's been teaching him to write. He can write the letter V for Victoria in the dust. Ben says he cannot writer her name. Barnabas compels him to write her initial in the dust on a barrel, and Ben writes a V.... and then crosses it to make an A.
Our thoughts
John: Good to know that Joshua had a cell built in the basement of the new house. You never know when your servants are going to get out of hand...
Christine: I suppose he modeled it from the cell in the Old House. I've often wondered why the Collins family had a dungeon built in their home. I thought it may have had something to do with Barnabas getting out of hand, but apparently not.
John: So was Ben hiding out in the same spot where the Phoenix will nearly consume young David a couple of hundred years from now?
Christine: It sure seemed like the same place, with the same crates and ropes and barrels.
John: I love how Barnabas has to hammer home that Ben wrote an A for Angelique in the dust.
Christine: Well, it wasn't exactly clear. He's probably in shock to hear it confirmed that he's married to a witch. What will Barnabas do about it? It should be an exciting week finding out!
