Dark Shadows Episode 1001 4/27/70

Alexis goes into Angelique's crypt and opens the coffin. She tells Angelique that she doesn't know what her secret was. She says that she knows that it's wrong, but her body must be destroyed. Angelique opens her eyes, and tells Alexis that she is right, someone must be destroyed, and it will be her. Angelique gets up, and Alexis says it can't be happening. Angelique assures her that it is happening, thanks to her. Angelique takes off her gloves, and tells Alexis that how she remained young will be her secret, but the warmth of Alexis' touch brought life back to her body. Angelique tells Alexis that her time has come. She says Alexis will take her place in the coffin, and she will take her place at Collinwood. Alexis screams.

Trask waits outside the crypt, wondering what's taking Angelique so long. He decides to check on her, then hesitates. He wonders why she didn't want him in there.

Angelique buttons her coat, and thanks Alexis, who is now lying in her coffin. She hears Trask calling Alexis. She tells him that he can come in. He does, and finds her closing the coffin. He asks if she's alright. She tells him she said a final prayer for her sister. He asks if she's ready to go back to Collinwood, and she tells him she's very much looking forward to it.

The lights go on and off and the chandelier swings in the drawing room at Collinwood. Quentin calls out to Dameon, asking if it's him. He asks who's responsible for Dameon's return. The lights come back on.

Angelexis and Trask return to Collinwood, and she dismisses him. Quentin invites her into the drawing room. She looks around as if she hasn't seen the place in a while. He tells her they must discuss Angelique. She says that she returned to her sister's tomb. She says that he and Cyrus were right, and that Angelique's body must be destroyed.

Quentin asks Trask if he's gotten a hold of Cyrus yet. Trask says he hadn't heard back yet, and will try again. He asks Quentin if he's decided what to wear to dinner with the Conway's, and Quentin tells him he has other plans, and tells Trask to let them know he has other plans. Quentin tries calling Cyrus.

Cyrus is in his lab when the phone rings. Cyrus answers, and Quentin asks him to meet him at the mausoleum. He agrees to do so. There's a knock at the door, and he lets Chris in. Cyrus explains that he's very busy. Chris says he was following Cyrus orders, and pulls out a note he got from him. Chris asks him why he wants to transfer $5000 from Cyrus' account to an account for John Yaeger. Cyrus says Yaeger has been helping him. Chris asks if he's in some kind of trouble with Yaeger. Cyrus assures him that Yaeger isn't blackmailing him. Chris says he's going to need Yaeger's signature to open an account, and that he'd like to meet him, anyway. Cyrus tells Chris that he'll have him come around. Chris leaves the lab.

Cyrus meets Quentin at the mausoleum, and they go inside. He tells Cyrus that they must destroy Angelique's body tonight. He says Alexis has agreed to it. He tells Cyrus that he wants to drag the coffin out and light it on fire. Cyrus agrees they should destroy the body, but points out they might be seen. Quentin says they have to take that chance. He opens the coffin to see her one last time. He admires her beauty, and bids her goodbye. They carry the coffin out.

Quentin touches a torch to the coffin, and it goes up in flames immediately.

Angelexis is in her room in Collinwood when Trask enters. He tells her that Quentin has returned. Trask points out that she seems so at home in Collinwood that it makes it seem like Angelique never died.

Quentin and Cyrus return to Collinwood. Quentin goes upstairs to get her, and tells Cyrus that he has to stay and have a drink with them.

Quentin tells Angelexis that they burned the coffin, saying there's going to be a change in atmosphere in Collinwood, including bringing Maggie back. Angelexis says she looks forward to meeting her; adding, under more favorable circumstances. He thanks her for coming to the mausoleum with them, and opening the coffin with them. He invites her down for a drink, and she declines.

Cyrus waits in the drawing room, when he doubles over in agony. He sees hair on his hand, and turns into John Yaeger. He hears Quentin coming downstairs and closes the drawing room doors.

Quentin comes downstairs and is surprised to find the drawing room doors locked. He calls to Cyrus, asking if he's alright.

Our thoughts

John: What was the point of Quentin's poltergeist moment in the drawing room? Why even bother having the ghost of Dameon show up if the actor who plays him has the day off?

Christine: My best guess is that it was intended to show that Dameon is all whipped up about Angelique's resurrection. Whether he is restless because he's displeased or delighted by it remains to be seen.

John: I was really hoping for a scene in the crypt where they opened the coffin and Alexis tried in vain to convince them that she was not Angelique before they roasted her! That would have been classic.

Christine: Yes, but it was oh so much more disturbing that they unknowingly cooked her while she was in a state of limbo, and not actually dead. That certainly was a flammable coffin though, wasn't it?

John: Um, okay... so now Cyrus doesn't have to drink his potion to become John Yaeger? Sounds like a pretty nasty side effect! I wonder if it goes both ways, and tough guy John Yaeger will find himself turning into nerdy-Cyrus at the most inopportune time...

Christine: The lack of control over the transformation is in keeping with the original Jekyll and Hyde story, and if it follows the original tale, Yaeger will need to use the "Do Not Touch" potion to resume his Cyrus persona. John Yaeger's appearance has evolved quite a bit since his arrival in Episode 996. It's funny that with all the manscaping he seems to be doing, he's kept those hairy hands.

Maggie comes downstairs, dedicated to rising to the challenge of being the mistress of Collinwood.  She hears someone talking to Quentin in the drawing room. She looks in and sees Angelique. Sure that she's back, she runs upstairs.

In the drawing room, Quentin gives the woman a glass of sherry.

Quentin knocks on Maggie's bedroom door. He asks her why she ran away. He says there's no reason for her to be afraid. Maggie says that she saw her. The woman steps into the doorway, and Quentin asks her to wait downstairs. He then tells Maggie that the woman is Alexis, and she's Angelique's twin sister from Florida. He tells her he wants them to meet properly. She doesn't want to, and he leaves her to go downstairs.

Cyrus tells Chris that he saw Angelique drive by the drug store. He says he called to her but she kept going. Chris tries to explain to him that death is the end. Cyrus points out that people once thought the world was flat, and that the sun revolved around the earth. Chris tells him that he's sure there's an explanation for what he saw. He tells Cyrus that the work he's doing may be impacting his health and mind. Cyrus tells him that man is chemical in his composition, and it could be radically altered. Chris asks him why he would do that. Cyrus adds that man is both good and evil within, and he might be able to separate the two. Chris tells him that he's become obsessed with a private, impractical idea. Cyrus tells Chris that Angelique inspired his experiments.

Alexis tells Quentin that she must go, and he tells her that Maggie will be alright, but besides, he makes all the decisions in the house. Julia comes in and is shocked. She thinks Angelique returned, and seemed very happy. She then realizes who it is, and welcomes Alexis. Alexis says that she and Angelique were never as affectionate as sisters should be. Julia asks if she received the letter she sent after Angelique passed, and Alexis says she did not, but she just felt the need to be there. Julia suggests that Alexis stay in Angelique's old room, and Quentin agrees. Julia leads her upstairs. Quentin is troubled by the fact that Alexis, despite being a twin, looks so much like her sister.

Julia leads Alexis to Angelique's room. Maggie steps out of her room and follows them.

Chris tells Cyrus that he's worried about him. He says he heard Cyrus was reading up on black magic, which he suggests can only lead to trouble. Chris says he has to stop him before it's too late.

Alexis tells Julia that the room is beautiful. Julia tells her the room is exactly as she left it. She says that she doesn't have to lie to her, and Alexis tells her that she is in fact Angelique's twin sister, and that her sister is dead. She asks Julia for a nightgown. Julia asks which one she would like, and Alexis says she can pick one out, since she hasn't seen any of them before. She tells Julia that she shouldn't suggest to others that she is Angelique. Julia gives her what she describes as Angelique's favorite nightgown, and leaves her alone. Alexis looks up at her sister's portrait.

Julia walks by Maggie's room, and tells her that Alexis is staying. Maggie asks by whose orders, and Julia says Mr. Collins' orders.

Maggie comes downstairs looking for Quentin. She doesn't find him in the drawing room.

Quentin hears music playing in Angelique's room, and goes in to find Alexis playing the piano. She stops and turns to see him. She apologizes for disturbing him. He tells her that he doesn't mind. She asks if the gown upset him. She says she borrowed it because she left her luggage in town. He tells her that she looks so much like her sister, particularly in this room. Alexis says she misses her sister, too, and perhaps they can comfort one another. She puts her hand on his shoulder, and Quentin sees Maggie, watching them. She runs off, and he follows her.

Quentin finds Maggie downstairs, and she asks if he can claim that wasn't Angelique in the room with him. She asks him to explain the note, which she hands to him. He says that was someone's practical joke. He asks why she didn't tell him about it sooner. She says that Will Loomis says that it was in Angelique's handwriting. He chides her for telling a drunk neighbor instead of her husband. She tells him that he's distant even when he's in the room with her. She says that no one in the house makes a move without Angelique's approval.

He forbids her from using Angelique's name. She tells him she is not a child, and that it's still Angelique's house, and he's still Angelique's husband. He tells her that if that's how she feels, she should leave. She says that she will, and runs out of the house.

He calls to her and then starts after her. Alexis comes downstairs, and asks what happened. He says that Maggie ran out on him. She suggests that he go after her, and then they hear a car speed off. He tells her that it's too late now.

Our thoughts

John: Um, how did Quentin know that Maggie ran away when he never saw her outside the drawing room? I do find it amusing that Alexis would come to the house to stay without bringing so much as a nightgown!

Christine: He turned to look when he heard the front door slam. Yes, isn't it odd that Angelexis did not bring a nightgown with her? Is it because she already knew there were plenty of nightgowns waiting for her?

John: So let me get this straight—Jeb is actually Cyrus, aka Dr. Jekyll? Did I miss this earlier, or was that small parallel detail not shared with us. You know that only bad things can happen when someone talks about letting the evil within someone out.

Christine: Except on Dark Shadows, only good things can happen when someone talks about letting their evil freak flag fly. His Jekyll nature was revealed today when he shared his theory on duality, which was reinforced by his doubling in the mirror. Let's hope the cute bunny survives his experimentation.

John: Good on you, Maggie! I was not going to be happy if she continued to put up with Quentin's constant verbal abuse. But something tells me that she'll be back. It's not going to be that easy for Alexis/Angelique to take over as the mistress of Collinwood.

Christine: Fun to see that Cyrus is using Julia's chemistry set from her first time developing treatments for Barnabas in Episode 343.

Elizabeth finds Maggie in the drawing room, and asks if she's ready to see the children. Maggie asks if Quentin is around, suggesting that she'd like him to be with her when she does. Elizabeth suggests otherwise.

Amy tells Daniel she's glad he agreed to meet his stepmother, and he tells her that he's going to do everything he can to driver her out of the house, and attempts to break his comb, but fails. Amy says she must be nice, and Daniel says his father still misses his mother, and his new wife will never be his friend.

Maggie is nervous about meeting the kids when Quentin comes in. She says she doesn't want to disappoint them. Quentin says that only Daniel needs to make an adjustment. He starts upstairs when Chris comes in. Quentin introduces him to Maggie as his cousin, lawyer, and the manager of the Collins estate. Chris asks Quentin if he has a minute. Chris tells him that Bruno has come back. Elizabeth goes to get the kids, and Quentin excuses himself and Chris.

Chris tells him that Elizabeth found Bruno in Angelique's room a few days ago. Quentin asks who let him in the house, and Chris says he probably let himself in. Chris says he's staying in the cottage, and told him that he's not wanted. Chris says Bruno told him that Angelique gave him permission to stay in the cottage. Quentin tells Chris that she's gone, and he's to get rid of him.

Chris comes back into the drawing room and offers to show Maggie around the estate. She thanks him for his kindness. She says she wants to make Quentin as happy as his first wife did. Chris tells her that Angelique became a legend in her own time.

Elizabeth comes into Daniel's room and invites him downstairs to meet his stepmother. Amy encourages him, and Elizabeth tells them both to join her.

Quentin apologizes to Maggie for losing his temper over Bruno when Elizabeth brings the kids in. Quentin introduces his son Daniel and cousin Amy to Maggie. She tells the kids that they can call her Maggie. Daniel scowls as Quentin leaves the kids with her.

In the foyer, Quentin says he'll either like her or not. Elizabeth says she doesn't envy anyone who has to follow in Angelique's footsteps. Quentin tells her that he'll be in his study.

Daniel works on a puzzle while Amy talks to Maggie. Maggie gets up and tells Daniel that she's counting on him to help her find her way around Collinwood. He asks if she met Amy's brother Chris, and says it's his job to show her around Collinwood. Daniel asks if she has met the gardener. He says that every day at noon his mother met with the gardener. Maggie says she knows a little bit about landscaping. Daniel and Amy go upstairs, leaving Maggie alone in the drawing room.

In the foyer, Elizabeth tells Daniel that he must be proud of his performance. Elizabeth goes into the drawing room and explains to Maggie that it will take time. Elizabeth tries to explain that Daniel hasn't accepted his mother's death. Maggie says that she must have been beautiful, and Elizabeth concedes that she was.

Amy and Daniel go into Angelique's room. He says it's the only place in the house where no one can hear them talk, and he's got a plan to get rid of Maggie. He twists Amy's arm (literally) and she agrees to help him.

Quentin asks Maggie why she thinks she's a failure, He says that Daniel will come around.

In a secret path, Daniel tells Amy to stand by a wall and hum a tune when she hears him say, "Mother please sing to me again"

Maggie is pacing around the drawing room when Daniel returns. He says he was looking for his father. She invites him to sit down and talk with her. He hears the clock chime, and then says he knows where his father is—in his mother's room. He describes how he stares at her portrait, sometimes talking to her.

She asks why Daniel is trying to upset her. She says she wants them to be friends. He tells her that she can go see for herself if she wants.

Maggie runs upstairs as Amy and Daniel come into the foyer. Elizabeth comes in and asks what they're whispering about. Daniel says they were just playing a game.

In the East Wing, Maggie goes into Angelique's room looking for Quentin. The room is empty. She sees the photo of Quentin and Daniel. She stares up at the portrait of Angelique as Daniel sneaks into the room. She says his father isn't in the room, and she doesn't think he was. She says she wishes she could make Daniel understand. He asks if she wants him to understand that she's dead, and tells Maggie that she's coming back. He looks up at the portrait and asks his mother to tell Maggie that she's wrong. He asks her to sing to him again, and they hear a woman humming a lullaby. Maggie says it's a trick. Daniel says that it's not, and that his mother never left. Maggie runs out of the room and Daniel laughs.

Amy comes in and he tells her she did a wonderful job. She says she never made it to the secret room to do what he asked, and he asks if she's joking. He says they heard her humming, and she says it wasn't her. He wonders whose voice they heard.

Our thoughts

John: The music that plays over Daniel's failed attempt to break his comb makes the scene more comedic! You'd think they would have tried breaking a comb in rehearsals!

Christine: The props department should have made sure he didn't have an unbreakable comb. It's interesting that Daniel has the same Cream posters in his room that David has.

John: Is it me, or is this deja vu all over again? Are we in for several months of children tormenting stepmothers?

Christine: It may be slightly different this time around since there's a housekeeper who is also participating in tormenting her. For me, the sense of deja vu comes from having seen the 1940 Hitchcock film, Rebecca. 

John: The voice we heard clearly wasn't Amy's so I'm not sure why Daniel was so surprised when Amy confirmed that it wasn't her. But it also clearly wasn't Angelique's voice... so we can only wonder who was actually responsible for it.

Christine: I'd expect it to be one of the actresses in today's episode. I initially thought it may be a recording of KLS, since she has past experience portraying a ghost, but after going back and listening to it again, I believe it's Joan Bennett. I would be pleasantly surprised if it actually was Elizabeth joining in to help gaslight Maggie. We shall see.
