Dark Shadows Episode 1040 6/19/70

Angelexis tells Bruno that Maggie was probably reacting to Roger, who would love to tell Quentin what he saw. Bruno asks why everyone lives in fear of Quentin. He says that he's going to call the police, and tells her to try and stop him. He throws her aside and dials the phone. Angelexis smiles as he tells the police he wants to report a murder.

Bruno hangs up and Angelexis asks him if he thinks what he did was wise. He asks her if she wants to find her sister's murderer. She says they'll just ask him questions, but it won't prove anything. She says he wants revenge, not justice, and he agrees. She asks him to fix her a drink. While he does, she takes his handkerchief. They discuss Angelique, and he says that he thinks she admires her as much as the rest of them did, and she says she admired him much more.

Quentin returns to Collinwood, and Roger tells him that Bruno made a neighborly call in attempt to make love to Maggie. Quentin asks if he's making it up, and Roger says his imagination is much more modest. He adds that Bruno has threatened Collinwood, so the evening's activities may have only just begun.

In the cottage, Bruno plays the piano. A police inspector comes to see him. Bruno tells him to wait until he's finished playing the song he wrote. He explains it was written for the late Angelique Collins. He asks if he knew her, and the inspector confirms that everyone did. Bruno says it's her murder he wants to report. The inspector says that was months ago, and Cyrus confirmed the cause of death was a stroke. Bruno hands him the copy of the page from Cyrus' notebook. As he reads it, Bruno returns to playing and asks if he finds it incredible. When the inspector says that he does, Bruno clarifies that he's referring to his music, not the note.

Maggie comes downstairs and finds Quentin in the drawing room. He asks her what happened with Bruno. She says it was a drunken, stupid incident. He asks if Bruno was rude to her. She asks him if he really thinks she indulges in witchcraft. Before he answers, there's a knock at the door. He tells her to answer it. She does, and it's inspector Hamilton to see Quentin. She shows him in. Quentin says he doesn't have time for him, and he insists, saying he has questions about the death of Angelique Collins. He asks Quentin if he wants his attorney present. Quentin says Angelique died of a stroke, and that his best friend, Dr. Longworth, confirmed the cause of death. Hamilton asks if he can identify Cyrus' handwriting, and Quentin says that he can. He confirms the page Hamilton has was written by Cyrus, and is given it to read. He's shocked. Maggie asks what it is. Quentin says Cyrus claims to have lied on the death certificate, and that Angelique was murdered. Roger enters and repeats, "murdered?" Quentin says Cyrus gave the cause of death was a hatpin to the base of the skull. Roger asks if Cyrus identifies the killer, and Quentin says that he did. He says that it says he is responsible. Hamilton asks about the seance. He confirms that Roger was there.

They step into the foyer, leaving Maggie alone with Quentin. She suggests that he call his attorney. He says he doesn't need legal advice if he's innocent. She says she doesn't want anything to happen to him. He suggests that she's suspected him in the past. He opens the doors and tells the inspector that he'll answer any questions he has.

Angelexis comes down and Quentin says the inspector is there to ask about Angelique's death. The inspector says he has some questions for her, and Quentin says she knows nothing about it. Hamilton brandishes the copy and says that she has the original. He asks her to confirm that he's right. She admits that she does have Cyrus' journal. She says she knows none of what's in it is true. Hamilton asks how she arrived at the conclusion, and she talks about how much he loved Angelique. Quentin asks her how she got Cyrus' journal. Hamilton tells Quentin that Bruno called the police and gave him the copy of the page. Angelexis says she bought the journal to keep it a secret. Quentin tells the inspector that he won't answer questions for anyone sent by Bruno. Angelexis says it's all her fault.

She takes Quentin out of the room and tells him that Bruno isn't worth it. She tells him to answer the inspector's questions. Quentin storms out, headed towards the cottage. She begs him not to go, and smiles after he's gone.

Roger tells the inspector that Quentin has a history with Bruno. They go into the foyer and find Quentin gone. Roger asks the inspector if he thinks Quentin went to see Bruno.

Quentin asks Bruno where he got the journal, and puts him in a choke hold. He tells him he's going to leave the house tonight, and then throws him down, saying he's not worth killing. Bruno suddenly can't breathe.

Angelexis strangles her Bruno voodoo doll.

Bruno falls to the ground. Quentin laughs and applauds. When he doesn't get up, he kneels down and shakes him. Hamilton comes in and says that he hopes for Quentin's sake that Bruno isn't dead...

Our thoughts

John: What a great back and forth between Roger and Quentin! I love when Quentin asks him if it ever occurred  to him that he wasn't funny, and Roger confirms that it hasn't! Though he's a bit of a jerk (like everyone in this time band), I have to admit I like his performance almost as much as Hoffman's.

Christine: Parallel Roger is so devilishly entertaining! He acted rather nervous about who was named as Angelique's murderer. Could Roger be the one who used the deadly hat pin on Angelique?

John: I hope the small fact of Angelexis having the real copy of Cyrus' diary doesn't get swept under the rug. Whether she believed it was true or not, I don't think that's going to fly with the inspector. Of course, Collinsport's finest have regularly left a lot to be desired...

Christine: The fact that he kept allowing the person of interest he was interviewing about the murder to leave the room and talk with others lets us know that he's not up on his game.

John: If Angelique really did the job on Bruno, Quentin may spend the rest of this time band behind bars!

Christine: It seemed that was her plan, and we can only assume that since she set Maggie up to look like a witch, he will think that Maggie is the one responsible for making it appear that he murdered Bruno.

Dark Shadows Episode 1039 6/18/70

Julia and Barnabas use Angelique's key to get into Stokes' house. She asks if he's having second thoughts. He says no. They stand over the covered body, and he says another innocent must die. Julia says she's not truly alive. Julia takes the knife, and Barnabas says it must be done. She says that then they'll have to decide what to do with Stokes, to ensure he doesn't find another body for Angelique. Barnabas takes the knife and raises it to strike when Julia pulls back the cover. He doesn't recognize the woman, but he says she's beautiful. He says he cannot do it. Julia says they'd be destroying Angelique. He says he'll find another way.

Julia says whatever he feels for this woman condemns everyone at Collinwood. He asks her to check the body, to see if they can bring her back to life, and leave Angelique in this state. He says she can tell Stokes that she wants to help him with his experiment. She tells him that he is wrong, and anything that happens at Collinwood will be his responsibility.

Stokes pours himself another martini. He tells Roger that he must be shocked to be having drinks with him again. Roger says he's had a shock today, finding out he is the executor of Cyrus' estate. He excuses himself. Stokes says he always admits it when he needs money, but Roger and Elizabeth won't. Angelique tells him that every one of the Collins' are going to suffer, except her son. Stokes asks what she's going to do, and she says nothing. He realizes that she's going to have someone else do her dirty work.

Julia says the woman's heart is barely beating, and she has a weak pulse. Julia wonders how Stokes does it. Barnabas assures Julia that when she wakes, she'll be perfectly fine. He grabs her hand and tells Julia that she moved. She tells Barnabas to hold her hand tighter. The woman's eyes blink open.

Angelique suddenly starts to faint, and mentions the body. Stokes realizes that someone is in the room, and rushes out.

Barnabas asks the woman if she can see him. He asks her to tell them who she is.

Stokes returns to his home. Barnabas and Julia hear the door open. She says something has happened to Angelique, because he's back. Julia tells Barnabas to leave. He disappears as Stokes comes in.

Julia says thank god it's him—her hand moved. He asks what she's doing there. She says she had a premonition. He ponders this. She reiterates that her hand moved and eyes opened. Stokes says he has to check on Angelique.

On the phone, Angelique tells her father that she's alright. Maggie comes in as she hangs up. Angelexis tells her that Quentin hasn't come back. Maggie says she's read that a couple shouldn't go to sleep without having made up after a fight. Roger butts in and says she may have to stay awake for  a long time. Angelexis tells him he doesn't know what he's talking about. She offers to take Maggie upstairs, but she chooses to stay downstairs and wait for Quentin. Maggie and Roger argue, and she tells him to get out of the house, pointing out that it's as much hers as it is his. He agrees, but asks her for how long...

Bruno is playing the piano in the cottage when Angelexis stops by. He says she enters rooms the way Angelique used to. She asks if he liked having her by his side. He asks what the police said when she brought the diary to them? She smiles, and he asks her if she went to the police. She tells him that she paid $5000 for the journal, and she'll do with it what she wants. She says there's no proof that Quentin did what Cyrus said, and she needs absolute proof before going to the police. He grabs her and tells her that she must. She tells him not to ever touch her again.

She suggests he have a drink to settle his rattled nerves. He does. She calls him an innocent child. She says she just spoke to someone who mentioned how attracted to him she was. He asks who she's talking about, and Angelexis says it was someone at the main house. He realizes she's referring to Maggie. She asks what it is that makes him so appealing to Quentin's wives.

Maggie pours a drink and hands it to Bruno. She says she enjoys his company. He says that Quentin wouldn't appreciate his being there. She tells him that she heard one of his recordings, and he plays brilliantly. He says it's one of his many talents. They flirt a bit, and Roger eavesdrops on them. Bruno tells her that she has a talent for loving, and goes to kiss her.

She realizes someone is listening and opens the door thinking it's Quentin. Roger says that she's lucky, it's only him. He laughs as he goes upstairs.

He says that he's going to call the police, and tells her to try and stop him. He throws her aside and dials the phone. Angelexis smiles as he tells the police he wants to report a murder.

Our thoughts

John: Nice how they realized Angelique's son was in her target list, and threw in a line to exclude him from whatever revenge she has planned. Can't fault her for forgetting about him. It seems like it's been weeks since we've seen Daniel.

Christine: Still, you'd think that seeing his family suffering and dying might have a deleterious effect on him. I really wish Julia had grabbed the knife away from Barnabas and stabbed the half-corpse herself. Then they could have taken out Stokes when he showed up and gone back to their own time. I wonder what truly could have caused Barnabas to change his mind...

John: Quite a visual clash between Maggie's couch upholstery dress and Angelique's psychedelic outfit. And that's without even bringing up Roger's ascot.

Christine: If viewers in 1970 weren't hallucinating already, that certainly would have induced them! What is Roger talking about when he says one of the servants might tell him where Quentin is? Everyone knows that Hoffman is the only servant on site.

John: Bruno is a strange duck. I don't buy Maggie snuggling up to him without the direct intervention of Angelique's magic. Of course, I don't get why Bruno occasionally takes on his tough guy persona from our time band, particularly when he throws Angelique around. I tell you, things aren't going to end well for that boy!

Christine: Angelique had to be responsible for Maggie flirting with Bruno. Maggie only gets that husky voice when she's under a spell. Also, there is no other explanation for the gag-worthy dialogue, which I have documented below. The best part of the scene was Roger's impish little grin and staccato laughter as he's discovered by Maggie.

Maggie: Bruno, I heard one of your recordings today. You play brilliantly.
Bruno: Thank you. Just one of my many talents. 
Maggie: You're a very self-confident man.
Bruno: Do you mind that?
Maggie: No, not at all. I think I rather envy it.
Bruno: Do you?
Maggie: Oh, I've never had much confidence. 
Bruno: All you have to do, is do something well, just once. Then you'll know nothing's really very hard.
Maggie: Yes, you may be right. But then I have no talent. 
Bruno: Not even for loving? Oh yes you do. I can see it in your eyes. You not only have a talent, but you have a need for someone who appreciates it. 

Today's end credits let us in on whose body is donating the life force to Angelique.

Bruno finishes reading the book and calls Collinwood. Angelexis asks him where he ran off to. He says he was visiting friends and gathering information. He tells her that he knows who murdered Angelique. She urges him to tell her. He agrees to meet her at Collinwood in an hour.

Maggie is coming downstairs when there's a knock on the door. She lets Bruno in. He mentions that he heard about her terrible experience, and asks who would have though Cyrus was capable of something so cruel. Quentin comes in and tells Bruno to tell him what he wants and get out. Bruno explains that he was invited by Alexis, and Quentin sends him off to see her.

Quentin asks Maggie how she's doing, and if he's forgiven. She says he is, but he doesn't buy it. She asks him why he took Alexis to Bangor with him. He laughs and suggests that she's jealous.

Bruno comes to Angelexis' room. She asks him for his proof, and he says he realized that someone might pay handsomely for it. She asks how much he wants, and he says $5000. She agrees to his price, and asks him who killed her sister. He says he'll tell her once he has the money. She says she can get the money in two hours, and he agrees to return then with the evidence.

He leaves and she opens a box, removing a diamond necklace.

Maggie and Quentin are sitting in the drawing room. She wonders if Cyrus was responsible for everything going on in Collinwood. Quentin assures her that Cyrus was fine until he became Yaeger. He asks her why Yaeger would want to destroy their lives. Angelique returns to Collinwood and hears them talking. Quentin tells Maggie that he'll believe anything with proof. Maggie asks him if things have ended for good now that Cyrus is dead. Angelique smiles, knowing that Maggie is wrong.

Bruno is in Angelique's room when Angelexis comes in. She hands him an envelope with $5000 and asks for the evidence. He hands her Cyrus' notebook while he counts money. She asks if she has to read the whole thing and he tells her he folded over the relevant page.

She reads it, and appears shocked. He says he sees that she knows the name of Angelique's murderer. He tells her to read it out loud. She reads from the book, Cyrus saying he knew Angelique was murdered, and that Quentin had murdered her. He found the hatpin he stuck in the base of her skull. He says he forged the death certificate out of loyalty to Quentin, sure that he didn't know what he was doing when he killed her.

Angelexis says she was always suspicious of Quentin, but she still finds it hard to believe. Bruno tells her that Quentin was jealous of him, and she says she doesn't care. She says she wants him to suffer. Bruno asks if she's going to go the police immediately, and she says she's going to do what she thinks Angelique would have done. She asks him to never tell anyone about the journal. He says he'll go along for a day or two, but if she doesn't do something, he will. She reminds him that she has the book now, and he explains that he has a copy of the page. She tells him that she'll make use of the information very soon. He leaves, and she thinks that it won't be long, and Bruno will be involved.

Quentin asks Angelexis why she's looking at him like she's angry with him. She says she's not. Maggie goes upstairs to rest, and Angelexis says she'll try to comfort Maggie.

Maggie is in her room when Angelexis comes in with some tea. She picks up a piece of Maggie's jewelry as she tells Maggie to call on her if she needs anything. She leaves, and Maggie pours herself a cup of tea.

Angelique sits by the fire and sends thoughts to Maggie, saying that she will do as she commands.

Maggie puts down her teacup, and gets up and leaves her room.

Angelique directs Maggie to go into Alexis' room. She picks up a necklace and returns to her room to begin her first attempt at witchcraft.

Quentin finds Angelexis in the drawing room. She tells him that Maggie seems strange. She grabs her throat and says she's choking. He tries to help her. She says she can't believe it, and says there's a witch, and begs him to stop her. Quentin runs out of the room.

Quentin bursts into Maggie's room and finds her twisting Alexis' necklace. He tells her that she wanted him to believe Cyrus was responsible, but she's a witch, and responsible for everything going on in the house. 

Our thoughts

John: I thought Bruno was planning to take the money and run. I think he's going to regret not doing that before the week is out.

Christine: I would expect him to stick around so he could hit up Quentin for a much larger sum of money. It's interesting that he didn't go to him first to blackmail him.

John: So Quentin strangling Angelique, which everyone saw, wasn't enough to convict him because his best pal Cyrus lied on the death certificate. But it turns out it wasn't strangling her that killed her, but shoving a pin into the base of her skull? So much for the crime of passion theory, Cyrus. Seems like you had some 'bad dude' in you long before John Yaeger came to Collinsport!

Christine: I'm having a hard time understanding how this went down. Angelique told Julia in Episode 1015 that she knew she was murdered because she felt a pin at the back of her neck. If Quentin was sticking her with a pin while he throttled her, she would have known he was responsible for murdering her. Perhaps the pin poking happened after he choked her to unconsciousness. How is it that nobody else saw her get pinned?

John: Interesting twist on Angelique's part, setting Maggie up as a witch. She played right into Quentin's hands, given how freely he tends to fly off the handle at the slightest provocation. What I don't get is why he ran out on Angelexis in the throes of agony.

Christine: He ran out because she was screeching about a witch and how he needed to stop her, which he was eager to believe rather than considering the more likely possibility that she could be having a medical emergency that required an ambulance call. What do you suppose her latest great convoluted supernatural plan is for avenging her death? Will she kill two birds with one stone and put the cold kiss of death on Quentin? After she's made him everyone else around him suffer first, that is.

Dark Shadows Episode 1036 6/15/70

Julia arrives at the old house with a stake and mallet. She takes them into into the secret room and opens Barnabas' coffin. She finds him sleeping inside. She places the stake over his heart and raises the mallet to strike. Julia from our time band strikes parallel time Julia with a fireplace poker, knocking her out.

Will is upstairs at Collinwood at dawn. He wonders where Julia went, and realizes she may have gone to the old house. He starts to head out when he runs into Angelexis. She asks if it's true Cyrus took Maggie. She gives Will the third degree and he tries to excuse himself. He finally just leaves abruptly.

Julia closes the secret panel at the old house, and on her way out, there's a knock at the door. Bruno comes in and asks her what she's doing there. She says she came on an errand. He notices that her hair and clothes are different. Julia says she was on her way into town. He asks her where Will is, and she says she doesn't know. Bruno says he wants to borrow some money from him. He asks her for a five-hundred dollars. He says she's got plenty after he, Angelique and others slipped her money for her cooperation. He says she doen't sound like herself, either. She assures him that she is who she is. Bruno attributes it to the time they've been apart. He leaves. She goes back into the secret room and realizes that she's killed her parallel counterpart. She wonders what she'll do.

Will returns home and notices the secret room panel is open. Julia steps out and he pulls a gun on her. He says he figured he'd find her here. She tells him she's not Hoffman, that she's a friend of Barnabas. She points into the room and says Hoffman is in the other room, dead. He goes in and is shocked. Julia explains that she's from another time. He realizes that she's the Julia that tried to cure Barnabas, explaining that Barnabas told him. He asks how she got there, and he says she came through the portal in Angelique's room. She arrived just in time to save Barnabas.

Angelique calls her father to see if he's seen Julia. She says that Julia told her she had discovered something about Barnabas.

Bruno enters and she hangs up the phone. He asks her where Will is, and she says he was here but he left. He asks her where Quentin is, and she says he's probably sleeping after last night. He asks what she means. She tells him how Cyrus abducted Maggie. He doesn't believe it. She says it was a man named John Yaeger, but he and Cyrus are the same person. He thanks her for the clarification.

She says they were working on an experiment. Bruno says he was working on an experiment with Cyrus. Angelexis tells him that Cyrus and Sabrina are both dead. He says it's a terrible shame and smiling, he rushes out.

Julia tells Will that she has been interested in Barnabas for a long time—as a doctor. She wonders if Hoffman told Angelique Barnabas' secret before she came to the house to kill him. She suggests that Hoffman may have written a note, and ask him to go check.

She realizes that he has to stay with Barnabas to protect him, and decides to go on her own, disguised as her parallel-self. She says she'll put on her clothes and fix her hair. He tells her it's risky.

Bruno goes to Cyrus' lab and searches for the combination to his safe.

Julia comes to Hoffman's room, wearing her clothes. She searches for a note. She isn't having any luck when Angelique comes in and tells her that she knew they would meet sooner or later. She asks he what happened. Julia says she told her on the phone about Cyrus and Yaeger. Angelique asks her about the information she found out about Barnabas. She demands that she tell her everything. Julia says she meant that Barnabas called Barnabas, and that's how he knew to go to the farm. Angelique asks where he is now, and she says he went into town. Angelique tells her to resume following him, and this time keep in touch with her.

Bruno got the safe opened, but can't find any cash. He finds a book labeled "To be presented unread to Quentin in the event of my death." He sits down to read it.

Julia tells Will that Angelique didn't know about Barnabas. She adds that they knew who was holding Maggie. Will asks if she wants to change out of the clothes, and Julia suggests that she'll continue to impersonate the parallel Hoffman. Will warns her that she'll slip sooner or later. She says it's the perfect way to find out what Angelique is doing. He disagrees.

Bruno finishes reading the book and calls Collinwood. Angelique asks him where he ran off to. He says he was visiting friends and gathering info. He tells her that he knows who murdered Angelique.

Our thoughts

John: Who knew that Dark Shadows was the real source of Julia & Julia! I'm looking forward to all kinds of fun of our friendly neighborhood Julia pretending to be the cold, callous Julia of parallel time!

Christine: I look forward to Julia's impersonation as well, but expect it will be short lived. I don't think she can pull it off the way she tends to overemote. I don't understand why she doesn't just wait until loverboy wakes up in his coffin so they can head back to their own time together. Maggie has been saved, so why get involved in the drama of parallel time when they have their own drama to keep them busy? Funny how she clarified her interest in Barnabas was from a doctor's perspective. Yeah, right!

John: Can you believe that Barnabas didn't do anything other than lie in the coffin today? That may have been the episode's biggest surprise!

Christine: Perhaps he's had some coffin rest days written into his contract. He did just make a movie, after all, and probably needs some down time.

John: It seems odd to me that a servant like Hoffman would be rolling in dough due to payoffs from the likes of Angelique and Bruno. Seems to me that if she liked her job, she'd keep her mouth shut! Well, now that we have an alternate Hoffman, I expect we'll be hearing all about her misdeeds...

Christine: It will be interesting to find out what Bruno has learned from Cyrus' journal and how he intends to make money from it. Do you suppose Cyrus killed Angelique? Nice to see that Alexis had a chance to pick up a groovy new dress and trendy hairstyle while in Bangor.
