Dark Shadows Episode 961 3/2/70

The werewolf lies unconscious, chained to a wall in the crypt. Zombie Davenport steps outside the crypt and looks up at the full moon. He comes back inside as the werewolf stirs. Davenport picks up his gun and points it at the snarling creature.

Bruno shouts for Davenport to stop. He says his plans have changed. He takes the gun from Davenport, and looks at the werewolf, pleased that his assumption has proved true. He torments the werewolf and says he wants him to be mad enough to rip someone to shreds. He says he has important new plans for him.

From the old house, Barnabas calls to Megan.

Megan is with Jeb, and asks him if he's upset because he's not with Carolyn. He tells her she knows why he's upset, and she recites the wolf man poem. Jeb tells her that Bruno needs to find the werewolf and kill him.

Megan hears Barnabas' call, and gets up to leave. Jeb asks her what she's doing, and she assures him that he hasn't kept anything from him, and that she just needs to go to Collinwood. He lets her go, and sits down in front of the fireplace.

Davenport asks Bruno what he's going to do with the werewolf. He says he's going to get him in a proper frame of mind, and he takes a whip with a silver handle off the wall. He torments the werewolf with it. He tells Davenport to go outside and wait by the door. Bruno tells the werewolf that he wants him to rip Jeb to shreds later tonight. He then proceed to whip the werewolf.

Barnabas watches as Megan approaches the old house. He opens the door and tells her that he needs her help. He says Chris Jennings is missing from his cottage. He didn't get to Windcliff, and he's concerned that Jeb may have him. She says she was with Jeb, and she doesn't think he knows anything about Chris. Barnabas asks about Bruno. She says Bruno hasn't been around the carriage house since last night. He tells her to go back and find out what she can. She doesn't want to. She says she wants to stay with him. She offers herself to him, and he leans in to bite her neck.

Bruno can barely contain his excitement as he whips the werewolf one last time. Exhausted, he lets Davenport back into the crypt.

He asks what Bruno has done, and he says he showed him who his master was. He tells Davenport to loosen his chains. He says he doesn't want him to get out of the crypt. Davenport asks if that's the way Jeb wants it, and Bruno tells him that it is, and they do what Jeb wants. Davenport begins to loosen the chains, and Bruno tells him to wait until he's out. He leaves, and locks the door behind him. Davenport undoes the werewolf's chains and he slumps to the ground, unconscious. Davenport goes to leave, but the door is locked. The werewolf gets up and growls. Zombie Davenport goes for the whip, but the werewolf attacks him.

Jeb paces in front of the fire. Bruno comes in and says there's no sign of the animal. Jeb is upset, thinking they'll have to wait for another month. Jeb then says that he doesn't think the werewolf is out, because he hasn't heard him howling. Jeb says he's going to Collinwood and Bruno warns him that it's not safe. He tells Bruno to call him if he finds anything, and he assures him that he will.

Jeb leaves, and Megan arrives. She says she came to talk to Jeb. Bruno tells her that he's at Collinwood. She asks Bruno if he's found the identity of the werewolf. He tells her that she's pale, and not herself.

She collapses in his arms. He sits her down in a chair and finds the bite marks on her neck. She passes out, and he ties her scarf on to hide them. He realizes that she'll be able to help him in his plans.

He takes the silver bullets out of his gun and replaces them with regular bullets.

Bruno slaps Megan awake. She asks what happened. He tells her that she passed out, and Jeb will be upset with her. She says it was just fatigue, and begs him not to tell Jeb. Bruno agrees under one condition. He tells her to go back to Collinwood to get the rest she needs. She agrees, and leaves the carriage house. Bruno picks up the phone and calls Collinwood. He asks Carolyn to speak to Jeb. He says he captured the werewolf, and has trapped him in the crypt at Eagle Hill Cemetery. He agrees to meet them there.

Megan returns to the old house and tells Barnabas that she didn't find out anything. She adds that she fainted, but she doesn't think Bruno knows the truth. She says Bruno said he doesn't know about the werewolf, and Barnabas suggests that he's lying.

Jeb and Bruno meet at the crypt. Jeb wonders who the werewolf is, and Bruno says that after he's dead, he'll change back into human form. Jeb tells him to go in and finish him off. Bruno points out that Jeb is the one he is after, and he thought he should have the honor. He reminds Jeb of what he said about who leads and who follows. Bruno hands him the gun and opens the door. Jeb goes in and Bruno shuts the door behind him.

In the crypt, Jeb confronts the werewolf. He shoots him in the chest several times, but the werewolf keeps coming. Outside, Bruno listens as Jeb cries for help.

Our thoughts

John: Thank you leap year! It's nice to be back in sync with the exact airdates/days of the week from 50 years ago in 1970. And to celebrate, we get a double dose of werewolf on zombie and werewolf on Leviathan action!

Christine: Not to mention more toothy vampire action! I suppose if Jeb's bowels weren't loosened by the threat of the werewolf, he may have noticed Megan's new vampire victim style, with fashionable wound concealing scarf and neck baring hairstyle, in addition to her half-lidded eyes and sultry mannerisms.

John: Boy, Bruno sure was gleeful when whipping the werewolf... Maybe he truly is destined to be the Leviathan's evil leader.

Christine: It was funny that he said he wanted the wolf to get worked up, when he was actually the one getting worked up.

John: I'm curious what became of zombie Davenport... did the werewolf rip his rotting body to shreds, and if so, are the rotting pieces still alive? And since I'm not so naive as to think that Jeb will be dispatched by a werewolf on a Monday, I can only assume that a) the sun will rise, and the werewolf will revert just in time to save Jeb from being ripped apart (again!), or b) zombie Davenport may have made amends with the werewolf, and will somehow be able to help his good old friend Jeb before he meets his own grisly fate.

Christine: It will be a disappointment if we don't get to see what happened to zombie Davenport. Bruno forces Chris into a crypt in the Eagle Hill Cemetery at gunpoint. Chris asks why he brought him there, and Bruno says he's got suspicions about Chris, and he'll find out if they're true within the next 24 hours once the moon rises. Bruno asks if the thought of a full moon frightens him. Chris tells Bruno that he's crazy. Bruno tells him that if nothing happens to him when the moon rises, Chris will be a free man. And if something does happen, he'll be forced to kill him.

Bruno opens the door and zombie Sheriff Davenport enters. Chris is shocked. Bruno tells Chris that Davenport has been brought back from death, at least temporarily. Davenport asks Bruno why Chris is there. Bruno tells the zombie that during the full moon, Chris turns into a werewolf. Bruno tells Davenport to chain Chris to the wall. He hands Davenport a gun with silver bullets, and says that after Chris turns into a werewolf, he is to kill him. Bruno leaves them alone together.

Jeb is on the phone complaining about something. Bruno enters and Jeb asks him why it took him three hours to get information. Bruno says that other things happened that he needs to tell him about. Jeb asks if the things in David's room are real. Bruno says he almost got killed there. He goes to show Jeb the noose that was around his neck, but it has disappeared from his bag. Jeb says the spirit of Paul Stoddard is trying to get them from beyond the grave. Bruno suggests they talk to Blair, and Jeb refuses.

Jeb asks Bruno why he's looking at him like he's afraid. Bruno asks if he is. Jeb grabs him and tells him he's not afraid of anything. He reminds him who is the leader, and who is the follower. Bruno tells him nobody does that to him, and punches Jeb in the face. They struggle, and Jeb tells Bruno that he only keeps him because he has guts. Jeb asks him who leads, and Bruno tells Jeb that he does, and that he follows.

Jeb tells him to remember that if he wants to stay alive. Jeb then asks Bruno about what happened after Collinwood. Bruno says the girl he rescued from the werewolf was in Collinwood, and he took her back to town. Jeb asks if she knows anything about the werewolf, and Bruno says he's convinced she doesn't know a thing. Jeb asks if he's soft on her. Bruno asks Jeb about his next move. Jeb says he's going to see David in the morning to see if he remembers how to deal with spirits of the dead from the book. He leaves, and Bruno thinks about how he can deal with Jeb.

Davenport tells Chris he's going to chain him to the wall. Chris asks what if he refuses. He tries to run past him but Davenport grabs him. Chris screams, and Davenport tells him that he doesn't like the touch of death on him. He tells Chris to chain himself to the wall, and he does.

Jeb enters Collinwood, and Roger stops him, suggesting that it's polite to knock. Jeb says Elizabeth offered him free reign of the house. Roger asks why he's there, and Jeb says he's come to see David, to show him some photographs. Roger tells Jeb that if he doesn't like his son's choice of friends, he can do something about it. He forbids Jeb from seeing him. Jeb tells Roger that he doesn't know how he's going to stop him.

He goes upstairs, and Roger makes a phone call to Quentin. He says he's just had his first and last run-in with Jeb. He says he's going to have Jeb run out of Collinwood. He hangs up and finds Jeb standing in the doorway. He asks Roger if he's wondering how much he heard. Roger says he doesn't care. Jeb says if he was talking to Quentin, he knows more than he thought he did. He tells Roger that what he's heard about him is true. He asks Roger how he would feel if something happened to his son, or his sister. He tells him not to mess with him, and leaves the house. Roger calls Quentin back.

Bruno sits by the fire, thinking that he's smarter than Jeb, and he was born to lead, not follow. He's glad he didn't tell Jeb about the werewolf. He realizes that if anything happens to Jeb, Blair will have to appoint a new leader, and who better than him. Jeb comes in as Bruno puts on his coat. Jeb says he wants to talk to him. He tells Bruno he just put Roger in his place, but he's worried about the spirit. He says he has decided the spirit is not Paul Stoddard. Bruno says he's got to prepare for the werewolf. Jeb says he's got plenty of time, and tells him that he doesn't leave until he tells him to.

Davenport approaches Chris and tells him it's almost time. He says he couldn't disobey his orders even if he wanted to. Chris asks him what he's got to lose. Davenport steps outside the crypt and looks up at the full moon. He comes back inside as Chris screams in agony. His hand changes, and Davenport raises the gun.

Our thoughts

John: Ah, poor Bruno's feelings got hurt. I'm surprised that Jeb let him live after he took a poke at him. Of course it would only be fitting for one of Jeb's own to turn on him and unleash the werewolf to do away with him.

Christine: He's certainly a fickle follower. Their wrestling match was a delight to watch.

John: Why exactly would there be chains installed on the wall in a crypt? I am really enjoying the Adventures of Zombie Sheriff Davenport, though I wonder where he hangs out when Bruno isn't employing him. Great potential for a spin-off series! I do hope we get a zombie-werewolf tussle tomorrow...

Christine: He's probably a barfly at the Blue Whale. Davenport's corpse appears to be ripening. Let's hope if there is a tussle, he'll get some gashes added to his visage. It looks like Chris is being held in the Stockbridge crypt that Vicki visited with Frank Garner in Episode 154, since Chris is being chained in front of E. Pendleton Stockbridge's resting place and the architecture appears to be the same. You may recall the lovable Caretaker of the crypt saying that all the Stockbridge family members who died a violent death were in the crypt, so perhaps that has something to do with why the manacles are in there.

John: Jeb goes to see David, has a run-in with Roger, and can't possibly have met with David in the time he was there. Do you think he forgot why he went to Collinwood in the first place?

Christine: You know how pissy Jeb gets when anyone questions his authority or threatens him. He thrives on conflict and takes pleasure in asserting his dominance over others, so I'm pretty sure he forgot all about why he went there.

Maggie lies unconscious on a slab in a crypt.

A man comes into the antique shop saying he's looking for something and he was told they might have it. Jeb doesn't look up from his book and tells him to look around for it.The man picks up a kettle and shows it to Jeb, showing off a ring he's wearing. He tells Jeb that he has a feeling he can be useful, and is willing to do anything.

Jeb asks his name, and the man says it's Bruno. He says he knows about Jeb. He asks Jeb if he doesn't trust him despite his ring. Bruno asks him to give him a job, after which he promises Jeb will trust him. Bruno tells him to point someone out and he'll be the end of them. He says he doesn't agree with what the book says about killing. Jeb tells Bruno that he likes him.

Jeb says that he warned one of their members just the other day. Bruno asks who he thinks is going to betray him. Jeb says Banarbas Collins. Bruno recognizes the name. Bruno says the outlines of the plan are known to all of them. Jeb says he understands why he can't punish Barnabas. Bruno offers to help him get his proof. Jeb says he's also got a girl named Maggie Evans to do that.

Barnabas checks with the authorities to see if anyone has word on Maggie. They haven't. David tells Barnabas that Jeb had a reason for killing Paul and the Sheriff, and he wouldn't kill Maggie. Barnabas says that when he was Michael, he hated Maggie. David says Jeb only does good things now, and Barnabas corrects him. He explains that Jeb is headstrong. Barnabas tells David that he's worried about Jeb because he is impatient. He says he may have other weaknesses. Barnabas suggests that David read the book again to see if there are any more that they should be aware of.

Maggie wakes up in the crypt, unaware of where she is. She recalls being frightened by Jeb in the woods. She tries to get out but the door is locked. The door opens and zombie Sheriff Davenport is outside. He tells her that he understands. He didn't like being in the grave and wanted to get out, too. She asks if Jeb sent him. He tells her not to make any trouble.

Jeb tells Bruno what he wants from Maggie. Bruno offers to kill her once he has the info. Jeb tells him not to make assumptions. Bruno says that she'll know he's suspicious of Barnabas, and Jeb agrees to have Bruno kill her, provided that it looks like an accident.

David finds something in the book he thinks Jeb needs to be protected against, and goes to tell him about it.

Davenport tells Maggie not to cry. He says his wife used to cry and he didn't like that, either. Bruno comes in and tells Davenport to leave. Maggie says he can't let him walk out like that, as he's not a living man. She then asks Bruno if he's dead, too. He assures her that he's as alive as she is.

She says he can help her, and he says he intends to as soon as she helps him. She asks if Jeb sent him, and he tells her that she asks too many questions. She tries to escape and Bruno grabs her. He tells her that she doesn't want to die, but she will unless she helps him. He says that all she has to do is talk to him, and he takes out a knife. He says she needs to tell him about Barnabas. He asks her how beautiful she'd be with her throat cut. He asks if Barnabas has told her about any plans that he has to leave the group. She says she doesn't know anything. Bruno says he doesn't like girls who lie, and she says he didn't say anything about a conspiracy. Bruno says he didn't say anything about a conspiracy, and she says that Barnabas didn't, but accidentally mentions Paul. Bruno puts the knife at her throat. She doesn't tell him anything, and he removes it. He says he didn't have a reason to kill her before, but he does now. He calls zombie Davenport back in. Bruno says the same thing that killed him could kill her, and she could come back exactly like him. He tells her it's her last chance to talk. Bruno goes to leave her with Davenport, and says she'll get used to being like him very soon.

David comes to see Jeb about Maggie. He explains that she's missing, and asks Jeb if he knows where she is. Jeb says he doesn't. David says he also needs to warn him. He says he was talking to Barnabas, and says that Jeb's causing his accident was a weakness. He checked the book for other weaknesses. David found a mention of a wolf who walks like a man described as the only enemy the leader of the Leviathans must fear. Jeb says there can't be a wolf within miles of Collinsport. He thanks David for warning him, and for telling him about Maggie. David says there's a special investigator looking for Maggie. He asks if they're looking for Carolyn, too, and David says she's off with his Aunt Elizabeth. Jeb says as far as he's concerned, she's missing. David asks why Carolyn can't be one of them. Jeb asks him who said that. David says Barnabas told his aunt that it wasn't the time. Jeb says he's worried about Barnabas, and it sounds like David is, too. He says that he didn't go to him with the wolf threat. Jeb tells David to keep an eye on Barnabas. He says his enemy is not a wolf who walks like a man, but Barnabas, and they will destroy him.

Bruno walks in and Jeb introduces him to David. Bruno asks what happened to his leg, and David says that he broke it falling off his bicycle. Bruno tells him that he should be more careful next time, and shoves his wheelchair out the door. Jeb asks about Maggie. Bruno says she wouldn't talk. He says she wouldn't talk, and that she cares too much about Barnabas. Jeb says he knows how to test Barnabas' loyalty. He says he'll take away Maggie's feelings for him, and leave her with loyalty only to him. Jeb tells Bruno he needs him to go to Portland.

Zombie Davenport silently watches over Maggie. She tries to run past him and he grabs her. Jeb comes in and sends Davenport out to guard the door.

She asks why he's doing this, and he says she will. He tells her that everything is going to be alright. She asks why she is doing this to him, and he says that she knows why, and she knows who he really is. She says this can't be happening, and he says that it is. He asks her to tell him who he is. She says that he's Michael grown up.

He tells her that she had to be taught a lesson, and it will be finished, after one more more thing. He says she's going to return to Collinwood, different in only one way. He holds out the Leviathan box and tells her to open it.

Our thoughts

John: Aristede! Sure, call yourself Bruno, but the knife all but gives it away. Funny that he offers to prove himself to Jeb, and yet fails on the one task he was asked to accomplish (which started to lead to some very Aristede-like whining!). I have to give him credit for forcefully pushing David's wheelchair out of the antique store. I just wish we would have gotten a brief yelp from David as the door shut.

Christine: Well, it's not the Dancing Lady, but it does look like one of the many knives Aristede has wielded before. Just like Aristede, Bruno also has a taste for outlandish fashion. I'd expect him to be a descendant, but I don't think Aristede had the chance to pass on his genes before Blackwood took him out in Episode 881.

John: It was beginning to look like we were going to get Maggie deja vu all over again, similar to when she was trapped in the labyrinth beneath Collinwood. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait nearly as long for her fate to be revealed. While I do like the inclusion of the walking dead in the show, when zombies start complaining about their former wife's behavior, maybe it's time to sew those lips shut.

Christine: He sure is a talkative zombie. I was imagining poor Maggie trapped in the mausoleum with him as he talked her ear off, complaining about all the things that bugged him when he was alive. No wonder she begged Jeb not to leave her alone with him.

John: This just in—an appendix to the Leviathan book appears to have been found. The ONLY thing that can stop the leader of the Leviathans is a wolf who walks like a man! Just where (or when) might we find such a thing? Do you think it's possible that the answer might be Collinsport, both now and in the past from which the Leviathans sent their fearless leader? Maybe this was where M. Night Shyamalan got the idea for aliens (whose only weakness is water) attempting to take over a planet whose surface is about 71% water...

Christine: Isn't that convenient? I would expect Chris Jennings, who is currently missing, to turn up at the next full moon to take care of business, except I don't think we can expect Barnabas to take the time to read the full Leviathan text to discover this weakness for himself.
