Dark Shadows Episode 1049 7/2/70

Carolyn pours herself a drink, and tells Roger he'd like to know the things she knows. He tells her that she's drunk. She says that she'll tell him the biggest secret of all. She says it concerns someone he loves very much. She says she can prove that Alexis is really Angelique.

Someone standing outside the drawing room hears her say this.

Roger tells her that's ridiculous, and Carolyn assures him it's true. He tells her to check beneath her skull where the hat pin... She then says she has proof, and he asks what it is. She says that would reveal another secret. He tells her the dead do not come back. Carolyn says Angelique came back for a reason, and everyone in the house should be warned.

It's Trask eavesdropping on them from the foyer.

Roger says if she keeps it up, he'll put her in a sanitarium.

Amy sneaks up on Trask, and he tells her to leave him alone. She runs off.

Roger tells Carolyn that anyone who watched Angelique die won't believe her story. Carolyn says that he does. Roger says there's no shred of logic to it. If she came back, she'd want revenge. Carolyn asks if Quentin being on the run from law would be revenge? She asks if he thinks Quentin murdered her, and Roger says he knows he did.

Angelexis walks up on Trask. He seems troubled to see her. She asks what he's looking at, and Trask apologizes before scurrying off.

Angelexis walks in on Roger and Carolyn as he explains no one but Quentin would have killed her. When he sees Angelexis, he's in shocked. Carolyn says they were just discussing her sister's murder. Angelexis adds that Trask was quite interested in their conversation, as she found him eavesdropping on their conversation. Roger says he'll have a word with him. Carolyn stops him and asks him to tell his theory about Quentin to Angelexis. She says she finds the subject upsetting. Carolyn tells her that there are even more secrets than they know, and that she knows them all. She puts down her drink and says she's going home. She momentarily sobers up and says she was thinking that Will would be there waiting for her. She leaves to return home. Angelexis asks Roger why he's staring at her.

Carolyn leaves Collinwood, and Trask follows her.

Trask walks in on Carolyn in the old house. He tells her that he heard her in the drawing room. He asks if it's true; if Alexis is truly Angelique. She asks him to pour her a drink. He asks her how he knows. She asks why it interests him so much. She suggests that he was in love with Angelique, too. He says it can't be her.

She laughs, mocking him for being afraid of her. He demands that she tell him how she knows. He says she'll regret causing trouble. She asks if he's going to make her regret it, and he leaves.

Elizabeth tells Angelexis that she thought she heard Quentin in the hall last night. Angelexis says he wouldn't return to the house. Elizabeth thinks he's spying on them to determine which of them is guilty of Angelique's murder. Angelexis says that his running away from the police makes him the most likely suspect. Elizabeth refuses to believe it. She asks if Angelexis believes Quentin killed Angelique or Bruno. Angelexis waffles.

Carolyn walks in on them, drunk. Elizabeth asks Angelexis to let her speak to her daughter alone. She leaves, and Carolyn says that she should have joined Will in his drinking. Carolyn tells her mother that she's relieved about her. She says she was upset when she believed Elizabeth had murdered Angelique.

Roger eavesdrops on their conversation.

Carolyn says that she found her hatpin, and she thought she killed Angelique for her and Will. Carolyn says she now knows who killed her. Elizabeth says she must call the police. Carolyn refuses. She says the police will never believe her. She adds that she knows who the murderer is, and tonight, when evening comes, she'll do something about it. Her mother asks her why in the evening, and she says that's another secret.

Roger sees a shadow in the foyer, and realizes that he wasn't the only one to hear them. He wonders if it was Trask, or possibly Quentin.

In the kitchen, Trask begins to sharpen butcher knife. Amy walks in and asks if he's still mad at her. He apologizes. She asks him to promise to believe her, and then says she heard the footsteps of the man who lives in the Tower room. He asks if she's seen the man, and she say she's afraid. He asks why she hasn't told anyone else, and she says then they wouldn't believe her, and they'd also be afraid. He tells her that he'll see who it is.

Elizabeth tells Roger that Carolyn is making no sense at all. He says he thinks she should be hospitalized immediately. She refuses. He says she always asks his opinion, but never takes his advice, and storms off.

Trask goes to the tower room. As he's about to open the door, Carolyn yells at him to stop snooping around, and to go downstairs. She says she's going to be with the spirit of her husband. Trask reluctantly leaves. 

Elizabeth looks for Trask in the kitchen. Amy tells her she saw him an hour ago, coming down the stairs. Elizabeth then asks where Carolyn is. Amy notices the knife Trask was sharpening is gone. Elizabeth says he probably put it away.

Carolyn tries to reach to Will. She hears a door open and footsteps. She says she's not afraid. She asks why he killed her. An unseen figure raises the butcher knife, and Carolyn screams.

Our thoughts

John: I love that parallel-time Roger, like our own, is basically lorded over by his sister. And he's right—in all timelines, Elizabeth often asks him for his opinion, seemingly just so she can purposefully ignore it.

Christine: Well, it could be because his advice is not worth following in either timeline.

John: Should we start tracking the taxidermied pig? He seems to keep turning up in strange new places.

Christine: It is an odd place to keep a stuffed pig. The only other place I remember seeing it was at the Leviathan antique shop, though we definitely should keep an eye out for this macabre specimen. It may be a harbinger of death.

Episode 913/914

John: Based on Carolyn's asking the unseen man, "why he killed her," are we to assume that Quentin is about to go all Norman Bates on her? I was really hoping her visit might lead to the introduction of the ghost of Will...

Christine: I don't think Quentin is the knife wielder. Since they showed Trask sharpening the knife, he is probably not the killer either. That leaves Roger, who may have been insisting on having Carolyn hospitalized and declared mentally unfit so nobody would believe her ranting about who murdered Angelique. Since he was acting obviously nervous whenever anyone brought up the murder, I'm not convinced it's him either. Let's hope we'll get a reveal tomorrow! Incidentally, is this the first time we've seen the kitchen in color?

Julia arrives at the Loomis house. Barnabas tells her he put Roxanne back in the secret room. He says they need to find Claude North, who may be the secret to killing Angelique. She asks if that was the name on the drawing. He says that he found Roxanne in the graveyard at North's tombstone. Julia suggests that if he's dead, they won't find him. Barnabas says the sketch isn't 100 years old. He doesn't understand the connection, but he knows he's very important.

There's a knock at the door. Julia hides, and inspector Hamilton comes in. He tells Barnabas that he has some questions about Will's death. He asks if Carolyn is home. Barnabas says she's resting. Carolyn comes downstairs with a glass of brandy in her hand. Barnabas tells her she should be resting. Hamilton says he'll try to be brief. She pours herself another brandy, and reminds Barnabas that he's her cousin, not her keeper. Hamilton asks if she's satisfied that Will took his own life. Barnabas interjects, asking if he has reason to believe otherwise, and Hamilton asks him to let Carolyn answer. She says that all she knows is Will jumped from the Tower room. He asks if he might have been pushed. Carolyn says that anything is possible, and Collinwood has a skeleton in every closet.

Hamilton asks if there could be any connection between Will and Bruno's deaths. Barnabas asks if the inspector believes Will didn't take his own life. Hamilton asks Barnabas if he was in Collinwood when the first Mrs. Collins died. Barnabas says he arrived after. Hamilton says he has a list of all attendees, and he's looking forward to speaking to Julia Hoffman. He says she's an old friend that he met when she worked for the Richardsons. Julia hears this from within the secret room. Hamilton asks Carolyn about Will's relationship with the first Mrs. Collins. Carolyn says that's his last question and storms off.

Hamilton leaves, and Julia comes out and asks Barnabas what she can do. Carolyn laughs, saying all the pretending and lies are getting sticky. Julia says she'll have to go back and try to bluff her way through it. Barnabas tells her to be careful. She leaves, and Barnabas tells Carolyn that if she keeps drinking, she's going to say the wrong thing to the wrong person.

Hamilton asks Julia if she participated in the seance, and she says she wasn't. He asks where she was when she heard Angelique's scream. She says she doesn't remember, and he says that's not like her. She then says she was in the servants quarters. He asks what she did next, and she says she rushed into the room. He asks her what she saw, and she says she saw Angelique lying on the ground, and Dr. Longworth was examining her. Shortly after, he pronounced her dead. Hamilton asks if she arrived in time to see Quentin with his hands around his wife's neck. She says she did not.

He tells her he has no further questions, and adds that it's good to see her again. He asks if she ever sees the Richardsons, and she says she does not. He says they were so fond of her, and never knew why she left. He says he and his wife shared their view. He says she was also especially considerate of Jane. Julia asks who, and he says his wife. Julia asks how she is, and he is shocked. He tells her that she knows very well than his wife has been dead for three years. He reminds her that she attended the funeral. Julia says he was talking about the Richardsons, and her mind slipped into the past. He asks her if she's been mistreated at Collinwood. He says he missed the familiar greeting she always gave him, and asks if she's forgotten that too. When she says that of course she hasn't, he asks her to greet him with it now, but she is unable. He says she must be under a strain, and thanks her for her time. She leaves.

Roger tells Angelexis he is upset that the inspector has questioned everyone in the house. She wonders why he hasn't questioned her, and he says she wasn't present at the seance. She asks if he knows more than they think he does. She says there might be some interesting development with the case.

Barnabas is sitting by the fire when Julia returns. She says her meeting with Hamilton was a disaster. she says she's afraid he's got her. Barnabas asks how he could have figured out that she's a Julia Hoffman from another time. She says he can't know that, but he must know she's not the Julia he once knew. Barnabas assures her that she's in no danger as long as he doesn't question anyone else.

The inspector stops into Angelexis' room. He says she's the most important reason she's there. He tells her that he wants the absolute truth from her. He says that she's in trouble, and they may have to hold her as an accessory to murder. She asks what he's talking about. He says if she pretends not to know, she'll make things difficult. He says that he got a court order to exhume Angelique's crypt. When they did, there was no body there; not even a coffin. He thought that someone might be trying to keep something from him.

He says he then looked at Dr. Longworth's journal. It mentioned that Angelique's body was destroyed. He says it also mentioned her and Quentin, and therefore he assumes the three of them destroyed the body. She says that Cyrus and Quentin burned the coffin two months ago. She says there is something he doesn't know. She says they opened the coffin and despite her being dead for six months, her body was perfectly preserved. She says that her sister had dabbled in the occult, and had pledged to return from the dead. Hamilton dismisses superstition and says that Quentin destroyed her body out of fear that an autopsy would reveal him as her murderer. She says she knows that's not true.

He asks her where Quentin is now, and she says she doesn't know. He asks where the remains are buried. She says they're somewhere in the woods. He tells her not to leave Collinsport, and then asks her about Julia. He asks if she's been ill. She asks why, and he says her behavior is peculiar. He mentions how she asked about his wife, despite having attended her funeral three years earlier. He says she's not like the Julia Hoffman he knows. He bids her goodnight.

Carolyn finds Roger in the drawing room in the morning. She pours herself a drink, and he asks if she knows what time it is. He tells her that her behavior is shocking. She says the house is full of shocking behavior. Killing each other is okay, but drinking in the morning is shocking. She says drinking is the only way she can bear with terrible secrets. He asks her what secrets, and she says he'd like to know. She says that she'll tell him the biggest secret of all. She says it concerns someone he loves very much. She says she can prove that Alexis is really Angelique. 

Someone standing outside the drawing room hears her say this.

Our thoughts

John: What a stroke of luck that the investigator of Will's death is an old chum of Julia's! Now, it would be one thing if Julia just needed to fool an old acquaintance, but a police inspector? Perhaps she's counting on parallel-time police in Collinwood to be as dumb-witted as they are in her time band.

Christine: It sounds to me like they may have been more than just friends. I was really hoping she was going to come up with some funny greeting to try out on him.

John: Julia almost got away without putting her foot in her mouth. I love how Barnabas is willing to express that he can't imagine how the inspector could have figured out Julia was transplanted from another time band. What's funny is that the only place where I can imagine an inspector reaching that conclusion would be in Collinwood!

Christine: Not good old Inspector Hamilton who wants to hear nothing about Angelique's interest in the occult and refuses to further investigate how her body could have remained perfectly preserved.

John: Hamilton has proof that Angelique was involved in the destruction of her sister's body, but lets that slide? Seriously? I guess he is truly one of Collinsport's finest. But at least he was able to let Angelique know that Julia is not the Julia that he knew. Useless information, unless you have an awareness of parallel-time...

Christine: If Hamilton is the one lurking outside the drawing room who just heard Carolyn say she can prove that Alexis is Angelique, then he may not let her participation slide after all. Julia probably should have snuck into the parallel portal room and disappeared before being questioned, but she definitely should beat a hasty retreat now. Unfortunately, her love for Barnabas will keep her in harm's way in parallel time as long as Barnabas remains. And why are they staying anyway?  It's time for them both to cut and run.

Barnabas promises Carolyn he will send Angelique back to her grave. She goes upstairs and he opens the secret panel to find the woman missing. Julia arrives and asks him what happened. She explains that she was just with Angelique and suddenly she could hardly stand. Barnabas says that the woman is gone, and he thinks Stokes has her. He asks Julia to find out if he does. He says he'll search the grounds and then check the mausoleum. He tells her to be careful, because they might suspect her.

She leaves, and before he does, Carolyn comes downstairs. She says Will died protecting his secret. Barnabas says he died protecting Quentin and Maggie. Carolyn says that he shouldn't have died for them. She says it's not worth it. Barnabas says that if Will's death has any meaning at all, it is to destroy Angelique. She apologizes, but says she loved Will, and he loved her in his own way. He suggests that she get some rest. He says he has to know she'll be alright, because he has something important to do. She says she won't betray him. Nothing matters to her anymore. She sends him away, telling him he's protected by her indifference.

At Collinwood, Stokes is on the phone with Claude North, asking if Roxanne is with him. He asks North to use his special psychic sympathy to find out where she is. He then asks North to meet him in their usual place. He adds that they have extraordinary enemies. He leaves Collinwood and runs into Julia. She says Angelique is very weak, and asks if he's found the girl. He says he may know where she is, and Julia offers to help. He says he'll let her know when he has more information.

Roxanne wanders through the woods near the cemetery. She hears someone approaching and hides behind a tree. Barnabas appears with a flashlight, and walks past her.

Stokes approaches the Collins family crypt, and then ducks behind it. Barnabas approaches the crypt and enters. Stokes comes out, wondering what brought Barnabas there.

Inside, Barnabas enters the secret room.

Stokes realizes that Barnabas knows too much. He assumes he has Roxanne in the room.

Barnabas lights the candles. He realizes that someone has been there and cleaned things up. He wonders if the woman had returned. He also notices that the dagger is gone. He looks around and finds a cufflink with the monogram "CN." He realizes it belongs to Claude North.

Carolyn is drinking in the old house when she is frightened by Stokes standing outside her window. He knocks on the door and she lets him in. He explains he was passing by, and wanted to extend his condolences.

She tells him she's very busy, and he offers to refill her drink. He says he always felt Will's talents were far beyond the ordinary. He mentions the influence of Barnabas on his life. He says the new Barnabas Collins also influenced his life, refilling her drink again. She says she doesn't know him that well. Stokes asks why a man with such talent and a beautiful wife destroy himself. He says he thinks someone else must be behind it, and presses her on that. She says he's right.

Barnabas returns and asks if Stokes is paying a social call at this hour. Stokes says he wanted to extend his condolences. Stokes says they both have a taste for nocturnal activities. He adds that he took a shortcut through the cemetery tonight, and saw him there. Barnabas says he was in the cemetery, and bids Stokes goodnight. Stokes says that when he mentioned him to Will the other night, Will suggested that he might have a girl somewhere. Stokes asks Barnabas if he has a girl somewhere, and Barnabas reminds him that he bid him goodnight. Stokes leaves. Barnabas tells Carolyn to go upstairs to bed, but instead, she runs out of the house.

Carolyn arrives at Collinwood looking for Will. She goes upstairs.

Barnabas tells Julia to tell Stokes that she searched the basement of Will's house and found nothing. They wonder who has the girl. Barnabas says he's returning to the mausoleum. He thinks she's going there, or Claude North is bringing her there. He tells Julia to go to Collinwood to find Carolyn.

Carolyn looks out the window where Will jumped to his death. She cries. 

Quentin finds her and tells her that she shouldn't be up there. She asks what's going to happen to all of them. She says that she's too powerful, even though Barnabas is powerful. He asks what she's talking about, and Carolyn tells him that Alexis is Angelique. She says she's dead, but alive. He says she's drunk, and that he destroyed Angelique himself. He tells her to leave. Carolyn brings up her mother, and then says she'll leave. She says his secret is safe with her.

Barnabas returns to the mausoleum, and enters the secret room. He hears someone, and finds the woman outside. He closes the secret room door and finds her kneeling at a grave. Barnabas reads the name—Claude North, who died in 1866.

Our thoughts

John: That was a pretty cheesy-looking "CN" prop cufflink to establish Claude North's presence in the mausoleum. What I don't get, is with Barnabas back and forth to the mausoleum every ten minutes, how did he not run into him when he was scheduled to meet Stokes there 30 minutes after their phone call?

Christine: Well, it seems he is dead, so perhaps he can flit about undetected easily. I'm wondering if he's the one who taught Stokes how to resurrect his stepdaughter and donated Roxanne to do it, though I'm especially curious to know why he's living in the secret room of the mausoleum.

John: Carolyn realizes that Stokes is related to Angelique, right? I mean, even drunk she has to be aware that he's more of a threat to her than Barnabas.

Christine: At the time she did not seem to have much concern for her own well being. I thought she was going to take a dive through the window herself today, so it was a surprise to see Quentin show up at the eleventh hour and remove that possibility. I think her newfound recreation may end up shortening her lifespan one way or another.

John: Did Quentin just confess to Angelique's murder? Or was he referring to destroying what he thought was her body? And would drunk Carolyn appreciate the difference? Sadly, I doubt she'll remember that he said it in the first place.

Christine: I think he was referring to destroying her body, but I believe Carolyn thinks he confessed to the murder, since she seemed relieved to know her mother wasn't responsible, as she had thought.
