Dark Shadows Episode 1106 9/21/70

After sunrise, Julia and Willie arrive at the crypt. They expect to find someone guarding the coffin, but no one is there when they arrive. Willie considers if it were Barnabas' coffin, and they were two other people. Julia tells him not to think that, and opens the coffin. She looks inside and is shocked by what she sees—Roxanne! 

Willie asks who she is, and Julia says it's the woman Barnabas thinks that he loves. Willie says they've got to do it now, and prepares to stake her. Julia stops him. Willie reminds her that Barnabas says it doesn't matter who it was. Julia says they can't do it without his knowing. Willie says that Maggie will die if they don't, and that Barnabas won't blame them. He offers to take the blame. He tells Julia to leave, and let him do it. She refuses. She asks him to close the coffin. She tells him to go and find Quentin. Willie is disappointed in Julia. He tells her that she knows they'll never get this chance again.

Sebastian is in the old house, looking through the locked door to the basement. Julia arrives and asks him what he's doing. He asks if he's committing a crime. He says he just let himself in. Julia checks the basement door. She asks what he wants. 

He suggests that they talk honestly about Maggie. He asks why she keeps Maggie at Collinwood. She asks what he knows about what has happened to Maggie. He says he saw her this morning, and didn't realize how weak she was. He asks if she can be doing more for her. He suggests that Maggie might be better off elsewhere. She accuses him of being in love with her. She asks him how Roxanne is, and he says she's fine. He asks for Maggie's permission to sit with Maggie tonight. She refuses. He says Maggie has got to live, and she agrees with that. He leaves, and Willie comes in. He says Quentin is is outside with it, and asks if they should bring it in now.

Sebastian goes to the crypt and finds Roxanne's coffin is missing.

Julia and Willie are in the secret room in the old house with Roxanne's coffin. Willie says Quentin thought they did the right thing. Julia says Sebastian will find the coffin missing. Willie says they can chain the coffin shut. He suddenly recalls leaving the hammer and stake in the crypt, and Julia tells him to go get it.

Sebastian finds the stake and mallet, and realizes they weren't used, meaning that Roxanne is still alive. He hears someone enter the crypt and hides. Willie comes in and finds the stake and mallet. he grabs them and leaves. Sebastian comes out of hiding.

Willie and Julia finish chaining up Roxanne's coffin. He asks how they're going to tell Barnabas. He asks Julia to be the one to tell him. Barnabas comes upstairs and asks if it's done. Willie hesitates, and Julia says they opened the coffin. He asks who was in it, and they said they brought it to the secret room. He asks why they're afraid to tell him who's in it, and Julia explains that it's Roxanne. He says it can't be, and goes to the secret room. He tells them to unchain it, and Willie does. Julia asks if it would have been better if they did what he asked. 

He tells them to leave him alone. He opens the coffin. Roxanne sits up and tries to attack him. Julia comes in with a cross. Barnabas runs away, and Roxanne groans. Julia places the cross on her and Willie shuts it and chains it up. Julia asks what he's going to do. He says he has to explain that he wants to help her. He says once she realizes they're the same, he might be able to control her. He reminds Julia that she saved their lives at Rose Cottage. Julia says if they could help her, she could have helped him. He wonders what curse changed her. Julia holds up the stake, and says it's the solution for he and Maggie. He throws it into the fireplace. She says Sebastian will find her. He says he has feelings that he cannot ignore. He tells Julia and Willie to leave the house. He says he must see Roxanne alone, and goes back into the secret room.

Sebastian sneaks into the old house.

Standing over Roxanne's coffin, Barnabas thinks about how long he's wanted a bride like him. He opens the secret panel leaves the house. Sebastian comes out of the shadows, grabs the mallet, and opens the secret panel. Inside the secret room, he uses the mallet to break the chains, and opens the coffin. He points a gun at Roxanne's chest. 

Our thoughts: 

John: So, do you think anyone was actually surprised by the reveal of Roxanne as the other vampire? Perhaps if you haven't been watching every day.

Christine: Even Julia admitted that she should have known. While it was predictable, it was still an enjoyable reveal. I like how Julia stressed that Roxanne was the woman Barnabas "thinks" he loves. She knows that she is the one he truly loves.

John: It didn't look like Sebastian got a look at Willie when he returned to the crypt, but I guess we can assume that he did, since he came right to the old house. Maybe seeing the mallet in Barnabas' house confirmed it for him.

Christine: Well, he is clairvoyant, so maybe he didn't need to get a look at him to know. 

John: Well that ending was unexpected! Sure, it was established that Sebastian had stepped into the Willie role of having fallen in love with his boss' latest victim, Maggie, and wanting to protect her. But why would he bring a gun in place of a stake? Roxanne is clearly not meant to die—yet!

Christine: A gun doesn't require any physical contact and can be used from a safer distance. One way or another, it seems like we may end up checking off the last clue on the Catastro-tracker.

At Collinwood, Julia and Barnabas go to check on Maggie. They find Mrs. Johnson unconscious, and Maggie gone.

Maggie approaches a shrouded figure in the woods.

Barnabas calls out the window to Maggie. Julia says Mrs. Johnson has been knocked out. Barnabas notices the secret panel is open. He goes in search of Maggie.

Julia comes downstairs and in the foyer, hears music playing. She goes into the drawing room and finds Carolyn. Julia asks who she was talking to. Carolyn denies anyone was there. Julia asks if Gerard was there. Carolyn asks her why she didn't say the children were missing. Julia asks her how she knew. Carolyn is flustered, and Julia asks her what Gerard told her. Carolyn demands that she tell her where the children are, and if she does, she'll tell them where they can find Maggie. She says she had a vision of her. Julia says Maggie's life is in danger, and Carolyn in unimpressed. Julia tells her that she doesn't believe she has second sight. She says that if she did, she'd be able to see the children. She accuses her of not seeing Maggie, either. Carolyn says she can't tell her.

Barnabas calls for Willie, who comes running downstairs. He tells Willie to lock Daphne's door, and then to help him search for Maggie. He asks him to check with Julia first to see if she's learned anything from Mrs. Johnson.

Carolyn is singing the Pansy Faye song when Willie walks in and startles her. Carolyn laughs, saying she knows more about Maggie than Julia and Barnabas. 

He asks her what she knows, and grabs her roughly. She asks why she should help him, since Maggie never belonged in Collinwood. Willie tells her that she's crazy, and she calls him stupid. She says he's not smart enough to find Maggie. She offers him a riddle to help him find her, sure he won't be able to figure it out.

In the woods, Willie tries to figure out Carolyn's riddle. He finds himself in Eagle Hill Cemetery. He doesn't think he can figure out the riddle. He sits down and leans up against a tombstone that has the name Harrow, which aligns with the riddle. 

That leads him to a crypt. He goes inside and finds a coffin inside. He opens the lid and it's empty. He realizes this is where the vampire stays. 

He finds Maggie on the ground behind the coffin, bleeding from a wound on her neck.

Julia gives Maggie a blood transfusion as Barnabas and Willie stand over her. Barnabas says that he'd like to drive a stake into his heart himself. Julia says that's impossible. Barnabas says that they'll have to do it. Julia says they'll know who's responsible soon enough.

Julia watches over Maggie, waiting for dawn.

In the old house, Willie shows Barnabas the stake and mallet. Julia arrives, and Barnabas expresses his regret that he can't do it himself. Julia and Willie leave, and Barnabas heads downstairs.

Our thoughts: 

John: So just to confirm, do we check-off the destruction of Rose Cottage, for real this time?

Christine: I'm not sure. Did we get confirmation that Rose Cottage was actually destroyed? Perhaps the Collinsport Fire Dept. arrived in time to save it.  I guess I'll check it off, and hopefully we won't have to uncheck it again when the clue gets changed to the destruction of Rose Cottage by falling meteor or something. 

John: Willie and Carolyn really turned things up to eleven today! Even parallel time Willie and Carolyn didn't scream at the same decibel levels! 

Christine: That was glorious entertainment! I wonder if Carolyn ever finished her big cookie. She nibbled on that for two whole scenes without making much headway. It seemed a rather odd prop, though maybe there is some connection to 1995 Carolyn, who compulsively ate Prof. Stokes' grapes.

John: Good thing Sebastian had the day off today, or it would have ruined the surprise if they found him guarding Roxanne's coffin. I mean, it has to be Roxanne, right? Willie may not know of Roxanne's relationship with Barnabas, but would Julia hesitate because she does? I guess we have to wait until next week to find out...

Christine: I will be very surprised if it is not Roxanne and even more surprised if she gets staked. Julia's devotion to Barnabas will prevent her from killing the woman of his dreams without informing him first. Also, it's not much fun if Barnabas doesn't get to agonize over choosing between Maggie and vampire Roxanne.

Carrie asks why they have to bring Gerard back, and Daphne says it will be worse if they don't. She says it will be different, and tells them to light the candles. Tad gets the ship and puts it in the star. They begin an incantation to bring Gerard back. Daphne says they must help them cross the barrier, and tells them to concentrate. They hear a knock on the door. Willie tells them to open the door. They try to clean up the things on the floor, and Daphne hides. Willie threatens to call David's aunt. They let him in. Willie asks what they're doing, and Tad says it's a game. Willie says he knows what they're up to, and he says he's got the devil in him. He says Quentin told him about him, and calls David Tad. Willie asks them to tell him about their black magic. Tad and Carrie drop the act. Willie says he's going to take them to Barnabas. Willie grabs Tad and tells Carrie to come with him. After they're gone, Daphne wonders where Gerard is.

Willie keeps Tad and Carrie in the drawing room. He hears dogs howling outside. Carrie says she wants to go back to her room, and Willie says they won't go to their rooms until he knows what's going on. He hears something and finds Maggie coming downstairs. She tells him that they're calling her. He helps her back upstairs.

Carrie asks Tad who's calling Maggie. She asks what kind of animal is making the noise; it's like a dog but different. He says he's heard it before, in their own time. Carrie doesn't remember. Tad wonders if Daphne is still in his room. Carrie says if they don't, Gerard can't come back. Tad asks her if she feels his presence in the room. They hear the carousel music box. Tad says it wasn't his fault that they failed. They turn to see Gerard standing in the room with them. Hallie says it wasn't their fault. Tad says Gerard should be angry with Mr. Loomis.

Gerard approaches them when Daphne enters. She asks Gerard what he was going to do. She says that the stars are out of position, and they'll have to try again tomorrow. She says she hopes when he's alive that he'll forget how important punishing has become to him. Gerard disappears. Tad asks where Daphne will go. She says that Quentin knows everything, except about Gerard and her hiding place. She tells them that they mustn't tell him. She says she's going to Rose Cottage. She kisses the children and leaves.

Willie tells Maggie to lie down. He asks her what happened to Mrs. Johnson, because she's not supposed to be alone. Maggie tells him to leave, but he refuses. He says it will be dawn soon, and then she'll be able to rest. He asks her who is out there calling her.

The next morning, the kids come into Maggie's room and beg her to not let them send them away. Maggie asks where they want them to go, and he says Windcliff. Maggie asks why Windcliff. She reminds David that he spent time there over a year ago. She asks if he remembers. Willie checks in on Maggie, and tells the kids that Julia and Barnabas are waiting for them in the drawing room, and sends them downstairs. Maggie asks him what's going on. She says David and Hallie need her. He says he didn't want to tell her, but the kids are possessed.

Tad finds David's suitcase packed in his room. He says they can't go. They fear what Gerard will do.

Willie finishes telling Maggie that David and Hallie are now Tad and Carrie.

Tad and Carrie sneak downstairs and out the front door.

Daphne has changed into contemporary 1970 fashions. She picks up Quentin's portrait, and wonders if there's hope for their love. Gerard grabs her shoulder. She tells him that he would be alive today if Willie Loomis hadn't interrupted them. He picks up Quentin's portrait, and when she says it was not because of him, he smashes it.

She says that Quentin could have told the family everything. Gerard grabs her, but then he lets her go and disappears. Daphne is concerned that Gerard will destroy Quentin and everyone else in Collinwood. She decides that she must not help bring him back to life. Tad and Carrie burst in, saying that they're going to be sent away, and they won't be able to bring back Gerard. She tells them to go back to Collinwood and do as they're told. After they're gone, she says that with the children gone, Barnabas and Julia won't interfere with their plans.

In the playroom, Gerard stands before Rose Cottage with a lit candle. He sets the dollhouse on fire.

In Rose Cottage, Daphne sees flames. She tries to get out, but the door is stuck.

In the playroom, Gerard holds the dollhouse door shut with his finger.

Our thoughts: 

John: Willie and Maggie are reunited! And just like old times, she's under a vampire's spell. Too bad we never got a chance to see Willie and Barnabas have that particular discussion. I'm sure he was even harder to convince than Julia that Barnabas wasn't responsible!

Christine: That may have been true a few years ago, but I think Willie knows Barnabas trusts him as a confidant, and is assured that he wouldn't put the bite on Maggie again, or at least would admit it to him if he did. I did enjoy Tad's smirky demeanor and the banter with Carrie over Willie's modern day lingo that was quickly dispatched when Willie asserted that he was bigger than him in response to his 'make me' challenge, and yanked him out of the room.

John: Daphne appears to be adapting well to 1970s living. She's got herself a new boyfriend (Quentin), a new wardrobe (courtesy of Victoria Winters and/or Orbach's?), and if she plays her cards right, she might just be rid of the old ball and chain (Gerard) and those two annoying kids!

Christine: It doesn't seem like it will work out that way with conditions on track for the destruction of Collinwood.

John: I guess we'll find out on Monday if Rose Cottage is truly destroyed... and if Daphne is inside and doesn't survive, won't that tick the murder box as well?

Christine: That is a possibility, though if she burns alive, it seems doubtful that anyone will have reason to suspect murder over an accidental death. Gerard's purple ectoplasm seemed to be tainting the other characters today, and it made him appear particularly ghoulish.

Dark Shadows Episode 1099 9/10/70

Tad and Carrie come downstairs and go into the drawing room. Hallie hopes that they will find Daphne waiting for them, rather than Gerard. Tad hears something that Carrie cannot. There's a knock on the front door. Tad goes to answer it. It's Daphne, her hair blowing in the wind.

Tad invites her in. Hallie is happy to see her. She looks around, and doesn't seem to recognize them. Tad tells her that it's Tad and Carrie. She embraces them. She struggles to speak, and they help her into the drawing room. She tells them that she's alright. She picks up a photo of Quentin, and says that no one must know. Tad says they'll hide her. Daphne shakes her head no. She says Gerard will decide. She says they must bring him there. They hear someone at the front door, and hide Daphne behind the curtains.

Willie comes in and Tad recognizes him. He says they're playing a game. Willie asks David what's wrong with him. He says he has a nose for trouble. He says that Barnabas told him to keep an eye on them. Tad tells Willie that they heard someone. Willie accuses them of lying to him. He sits down, and makes them sit down opposite him until they tell the truth.

Carolyn complains to Quentin that everyone wants her to explain her second sight. She says there is someone in the house tonight who should never be there. He asks her who. She says she can feel their presence. Quentin says that if there's a stranger in the house, they have to find them.

Tad asks if Willie is going to make them stay up all night. He says he's going to tell Barnabas, and will take them up to their rooms. He assures them he'll find their secret out. Tad sneaks to Daphne and tells her they'll be back soon with some clothes. Willie yells at David to come with them as they go upstairs.

Daphne comes out from behind the curtains.

Quentin and Carolyn come to the drawing room to look for the stranger. He tells Carolyn to search behind the draperies, and she says no one would hide there. He asks if she feels a person in the room, and she says that a person has been there, but she's not sure if they're in there now. Quentin look behind the curtain right next to where Daphne is hiding, but doesn't check where she is. He then smells lilacs. He tells Carolyn there's no one there, and suggests they check the rest of the house.

After they leave, Daphne comes out and calls to Gerard. She says she must be with them to bring him back, and assures him it will be tonight, and he will be with her, alive. She hears someone coming and hides again. Quentin comes downstairs and calls to her, asking if she's the stranger. He then decides that it can't be Daphne, because Carolyn sensed someone alive, not a spirit. Daphne begins to sob. Quentin hears her and she steps out of the shadows. He embraces her, and she asks him to let her go. He says he'll never let her go. He reaches out to her and she tells him not to touch her. She says she wants him to, but he can't. He asks if she can love him, and she says he mustn't ask her. She says she has no answers for him. He asks why he can't hold her, and grabs her and kisses her. He says this is as it should be. He asks why she's come back if not for him. He asks if she came for the children. He asks if they'll be David and Hallie again.

He hears Willie call him from upstairs. He steps out of the drawing room and closes the door behind him. Willie asks him who he was talking to. Quentin says he wasn't talking to anyone. He asks if Barnabas put him in charge of Collinwood, and suggests he go back to the old house. Willie says he's going to tell Barnabas about the strange things going on, and leaves. Quentin returns to Daphne and says they have to get her new clothes. She says she must go to the children. He asks if she'll end the possession, and she says she has no power. Quentin says they cannot remain as they are. She says she must see the children because she loves them.

Carrie comes into Tad's room with clothes that belonged to the old governess, Victoria. Daphne comes in and says they have no time. Hallie asks if they must bring Gerard. She tells them to make the star.

Carolyn tells Quentin that terrible things are happening in the house tonight. She tells him that he knows, and he denies it before walking out on her. She realizes that Gerard is very near.

Our thoughts: 

John: It's been so long since we've seen our 1970 Willie, I'm surprised that we can still recognize him. So how on Earth would Tad, who has never seen him before, be able to recognize him?

Christine: I would say that he may have access to David's memories, but since he was unable to immediately answer Barnabas' questions yesterday, it would seem that he does not. Perhaps a Mr. Loomis exists in 1840, otherwise we have to assume they met offscreen, when Barnabas made Willie the babysitter. It's good to have Willie back, though the fact that Barnabas has left him in charge of the possessed kids indicates that he's pretty much given up.

John: Okay, it's pretty ridiculous for Quentin to tell Carolyn to look behind the curtains, where she'll find Daphne, only to have her say that no one would hide there. And then he checks right next to where she's at, but not where she's actually at. It would have made things more interesting if he had his love connection right in front of Carolyn.

Christine: I guess Carolyn's second sight is on the blink or they would have found Daphne right away. I wonder who put Quentin's photo next to the chair in the drawing room. There aren't photos of any other present day family members displayed anywhere. It seems rather odd.

John: What's up with the foil ball that represents a spirit about to take on a corporeal form? Even the bat puppets were more convincing!

Christine: Is it possible this foil ball has appeared as an alien on Star Trek before, or is it just reminding me of something similar from that show?
