Dark Shadows Episode 415 - 1/26/68

Barnabas returns to the family crypt. Sarah looks up and sees him. She tells him she's been waiting for him. He tells her she must go home, and she asks him to carry her home. He says he cannot, and she must not say that she saw him. She sees the blood on his mouth, and says he's not Barnabas. She runs from the crypt as he calls after her.

Millicent returns home and tells Naomi they haven't yet found Sarah. She says she keeps thinking of what Vicki said. Millicent suggests that Vicki is responsible, and Naomi says she's sure that Vicki is innocent.

Barnabas wanders in the woods looking for Sarah. He runs into Ben, who is also searching for Sarah. Ben tells him he can't be seen by anyone. Barnabas explains that it's his fault Sarah is missing. Barnabas suggests they return to the mausoleum before the sun rises. He tells Ben to continue looking for Sarah, and Ben reminds him to take care of himself, as it's almost dawn.

Sarah hides behind Jeremiah's tombstone. She sees Barnabas return and walk past her. He enters the crypt.

Ben enters the cemetery calling for Sarah. He finds her hiding between tombstones. He picks her up to carry her home. He asks her what happened but she doesn't speak. He assures her that everything will be all right.

Millicent looks out the drawing room. Naomi joins her and asks how long she was resting. Millicent tells Naomi she had only been resting for an hour. She sees Ben outside, approaching the house with Sarah in his arms.

Sarah is in bed, watched over by her mother Naomi, when Millicent brings in tea. Sarah does not speak. Ben enters with a tray of towels the doctor prepared. He asks how Sarah is doing, and Sarah smiles at him. Sarah is unable to speak. Millicent says she can write. The give Sarah a chalkboard and she writes Barnab—. Millicent explains that he's away in England, but he'll be back. She reacts fearfully to that statement.

Barnabas wakes and calls for Ben.

Naomi applies hot compresses to Sarah's forehead. She tells Millicent to go have her dinner, and that Ben will stay with her. Ben says he has to go somewhere, but ultimately agrees to stay. Naomi tells Ben that Sarah would never be afraid of her own brother. She tells Ben it's strange that she would associate him with Barnabas, and couldn't understand why Sarah would be afraid at the thought of Barnabas returning.

Barnabas wonders where Ben is, and whether he can risk going to the house to check on Sarah. He steps back into the shadows when someone approaches. When he sees it's Ben, he asks for an update. Ben confirms that she's alive, but if she doesn't get better soon, she'll die. Barnabas blames himself, and says he must go see Sarah. Ben tells him that she can't speak. He also says that Barnabas will need his help.

Millicent tells Naomi to  go eat. She does, and then Ben enters. He offers to cover for Millicent, who has somethings to do. Once she's gone, Ben is able to make way for Barnabas to visit Sarah. He apologizes for frightening her, and tells her to promise him she'll get better. She asks him to hold her, and he does as she sits up. She tells him she loves him, and dies in his arms.

Our thoughts

John: Naomi brags about nursing Joshua and Barnabas through their illnesses. Um, in case you forgot, Naomi, Barnabas died...

Christine: I think she was referring to nursing them through la grippe, not the plague.

John: Why did Barnabas come across as being trapped in the crypt while waiting for Ben to arrive? Sure, he could help him meet with Sarah, but it's not like he couldn't have gone out on his own.

Christine: I think he didn't want to make the mistake of getting caught lurking around the bushes by anyone else. Poor Barnabas. He remembered that part of Angelique's curse was that anyone who loved him would die, and helped fulfill that by strangling her, but he hasn't taken into consideration how it might also affect Sarah, Josette and Naomi. I suspect Joshua will be okay.

John: I was kind of hoping that Naomi would walk in on Barnabas holding his dead sister in his arms... Fortunately, we already know that they'll (eventually) meet again.

Christine: It was a poignant moment. I wonder if Sarah will make her first ghostly appearance in 1795, or if she'll wait around until Barnabas returns in 1967 to show up.

Dark Shadows Episode 414 - 1/25/68

In the family crypt, Sarah calls to Barnabas. The door slams shut, trapping her inside.

Millicent and Nathan return to Collinwood after viewing an eclipse of the moon. She suggests that he must be going, and he continues to flirt with her. She says he makes her do things she should not do. Before you know it, he proposes to her, and she accepts. She says they will be married in New York, and then return to Collinwood so he can resume his work with the Navy. He says he was considering a change, and gives her reasons why she wouldn't want him in the Navy once they were married. Naomi calls for Sarah and walks in on them. They attempt to explain what they were up to, but all Naomi is interested in is whether they've seen Sarah.

Sarah calls for help from within the family crypt.

Naomi says that when she got back from town, she found that Sarah had not been in her bed. Nathan suggests she might have gone to watch the eclipse. He says he'll go look for her and leaves. Naomi says that Joshua will be furious that she left Sarah alone. She mentions Victoria, and Millicent refers to her as a witch. Naomi says witches don't warn people. Millicent asks for more details. Naomi explains that Vicki warned her about Sarah dying on her birthday. When she got back and found Sarah was gone, she believes that Vicki may be able to predict the future.

Sarah calls for Barnabas, asking him to please find her.

Barnabas approaches a woman standing by the water. She recognizes him, and says he frightened her. She says she knows she shouldn't be out alone after what happened to other girls. She tells Barnabas that she heard he had gone to England. She flirts with him, offering to go walking with him. She says she can't wait until her friends hear about the two of them.

She says the Revered Bland has written a whole sermon about her. She invites him to the Eagle for a drink, and he explains that he really should be going. He asks if she's waiting for someone else. He says she's very pretty, and when she says she has to tell her friends he said that, he asks her not to tell anyone she saw him. He starts to leave but she convinces him to stay. She snuggles up against him and he makes a move to bite her. She backs away, and falls into the ocean.

Nathan calls for Sarah in the woods. Millicent joins him, and says if Naomi is right, there's a curse on everyone at Collinwood. She says everyone that falls in love becomes miserable. He offers to take her to the house, and she says they have to keep looking. She asks if he checked near the cemetery, and Nathan explains that a child would be too frightened to do that.

Barnabas kneels at Jeremiah's grave, commiserating with him. He thinks at least Jeremiah has a chance at rest, while his eternity offers no escape. He cries out.

Millicent tells Nathan she heard a human cry.

Barnabas returns to the family crypt. Sarah looks up and sees him. She tells him she's been waiting for him. He tells her she must go home, and she asks him to walk her home. He says he cannot, and she must not say that she saw him. She sees the blood on his mouth, and says he's not Barnabas. She runs from the crypt as daylight breaks on the horizon.

Our thoughts

John: Good thing for Millicent that Naomi was too preoccupied with Sarah to get upset with her fooling around with Nathan in the drawing room.

Christine: Nathan is a real scalawag. He's looking at living the high life off Millicent's fortune. Millicent is going to get whiplash the way she's always whipping her head away from his smoochy lips.

John: Barnabas almost got to play Jack the Ripper! Question is, did Ruby drown? Or did he just leave her to swim away? I guess we'll find out if the constable comes calling...

Christine: I think that he fished her out and then had himself a nice meal. He couldn't risk letting her get away and expose him.

John: Sarah has been waiting all day to see Barnabas, and when he finally appears, she runs away because he has a little blood on his mouth?

Christine: Well, he's also dead and is not quite the same mild mannered brother she once knew. I was wrong about him learning to eat a little more neatly. You'd think a gentleman vampire would carry a handkerchief to dab about the bloodstained lips after an evening's refreshment.

Dark Shadows Episode 413 - 1/24/68

Peter tells Vicki that he's going to tell Reverend Trask that he let her out to go to Collinwood. He says that telling Trask she never left her cell allows him to claim that she was in two places at once—something only a witch could do. He prepares to leave, and Vicki begs him not to get into trouble on her account. He's surprised she seems to care what happens to him. He asks if there's someone waiting for her in 'her time', and she says she doesn't want to talk about it. She thanks him for his help and kisses him on the cheek.

He says she must be from another century, as women here would never do such a thing. He tells her he's been reading the Collins family history. She asks him the date, and when he tells her, she says it will be Sarah Collins' 11th birthday in two days, at which time she'll die. Vicki says they could prevent her from dying of exposure by keeping her from going outside. He asks Peter to fetch Naomi.

Sarah comes downstairs and asks her mother where Josette is. Naomi explains she went to Bangor. Sarah says she made a present for her; a candle to light the way home for the one she loves. She says she thinks Josette loves Barnabas still. She says she loves Barnabas, too, and wants him to come home from England. Naomi tells her that Barnabas may not come back until long after she's grown. Sarah says she's going to light the candle in Josette's room to lead Barnabas home.

Ben returns to the cemetery at sundown. Barnabas rises from his coffin. Barnabas tells Ben he plans to see Josette that night. Ben's concerned that might overwhelm her. He says he'll go to her room and leave her something to show that his return is imminent.

Naomi visits Vicki in jail. Vicki tells her how sorry she is about Barnabas. Naomi says Joshua expressly forbid anyone from knowing about Barnabas' death. Vicki realizes that explains why the book says Barnabas went to England. Vicki tells her that Sarah is in danger. She tells Naomi about the book, which she refuses to believe in. Vicki explains that Sarah will die on her 11th birthday if she doesn't take precautions. Naomi asks if the book predicted the death of Barnabas, and Vicki says the book describes the history of the family, including that Barnabas went to England. Naomi agrees to keep Sarah indoors.

Sarah goes into Josette's room and places the candle in the window. She lights it. Outside the window, she sees Barnabas and calls to him. He ducks into the shadows. Sarah runs downstairs to find him.

Barnabas emerges from the shadows.

Sarah runs downstairs and goes outside. She sees him and runs to him, but he runs away from her. Standing among the tombstones, she begs for him to come back.

Peter offers to take Naomi back to Collinwood. She asks if he believes Vicki. He says he does, as he's seen the book. Naomi says she needs to be with Sarah before anything happens to her.

Sarah searches the cemetery for Barnabas. She reaches the family crypt and calls to him. She says she's cold and scared. She goes inside to look for him. She continues calling for him, but he does not appear.

Our thoughts

John: A budding jailhouse (or gaol-house) romance, Vicki? Really?

Christine: She might as well make the best of her situation.

John: Does Barnabas have a dresser just offscreen in the crypt? I'm wondering when Ben has his clothes cleaned between feasting, since he doesn't pop out of his coffin wearing only his boxers at night.

Christine: I don't think he would have been able to get those bloodstains out, so he probably just brings him a fresh outfit from the Old House every evening. It could be he's learning to be a little more fastidious about his bloodsucking as he becomes more adept at it.

John: Who would have thought Barnabas will be the one responsible for Sarah's death by exposure. Although that's probably better than having him put the bite on his little sister...

Christine: It's probably caused him a lot of guilt over the centuries. I am confused by the opening narration that said, "Held captive on a charge of witchcraft, Victoria Winters is the one person who knows that this is but the beginning of a 200 year nightmare." It makes it sound like she knows what Barnabas has become, but it doesn't seem like she does.

Dark Shadows Episode 399 - 1/4/68

From the old house, Angelique warns Ben not to say anything. She realizes he said the word witch, but not her name, before she was able to silence him. She conjures a voice, and asks it to call a little girl.

In the new house, Sarah hears Vicki call her, beckoning her to the old house.

In the old house, Angelique continues to beckon Sarah to come to the old house.

Abigail tells Joshua that Ben told her he was sent by a witch. He explains that Ben was in a position to say anything to save himself. She explains that something personal, like the ribbon Ben was stealing, is used to cast a spell. She's fearful, and says she thinks the old house must be searched for the witch. He says that no one is to set foot in the old house. Sarah walks by, and Abigail asks where she's going. She says Miss Winters called for her to come to the old house. Joshua sends her to her room, and Abigail stops him. He says they should follow her to the old house. Abigail sends Sarah to find Miss Winters.

Barnabas startles Angelique. She tries to explain what she was doing with candles early in the day when Sarah arrives calling for Vicki.

She's followed by Abigail and Joshua. Barnabas welcomes them into the house. Angelique offers to make them tea, and Abigail says they are not there for tea. Sarah says she heard Vicki calling her to come to the old house. Barnabas says she is not there, and Abigail says his answer is not satisfactory. She says with his permission, they will search the house. He says he will not give her such permission. Suddenly, they all realize Sarah is missing.

Sarah is upstairs with Vicki, telling her that she heard her call. Vicki explains that she didn't call for her. Sarah asks why she doesn't live with her at the new house, so they can work on her lessons. Vicki apologizes, explaining that she cannot. Sarah says she shouldn't have told her aunt that Vicki was there. Vicki realizes that she has to leave. Sarah tells Vicki there's a room in the attic where she can hide. Vicki asks Sarah to promise not to tell anyone that she saw her.

Abigail asks Sarah if she knows what happens to little girls who tell lies to their elders. She tries to frighten her, but Sarah denies having seen Vicki.

Barnabas tells his father that he hopes he's convinced Vicki isn't in the old house. Joshua apologizes. Abigail comes downstairs and says Sarah denies everything, and they must send for Reverend Trask to perform an exorcism. Joshua asks Barnabas to allow Trask to perform his mumbo-jumbo to allow for peace in the family. Angelique agrees that Trask can do no harm.

After they leave, Angelique asks Barnabas if he'll allow Trask to perform an exorcism. He reluctantly agrees. He goes upstairs, and Angelique says it will be a surprise to all—including the fraud of a reverend—when they find someone who acts very much like a witch. She hears Victoria Winters name again...

Our thoughts

John: So what do you think happened to Ben? Have we seen the last of him?

Christine: I'm sure Ben will be okay. Angelique still needs him to do her bidding, though she might turn him into a moth and put him in a jar for awhile to punish him. I wonder at what point Barnabas will start nagging Angelique about the increase in candle usage and put her on a budget. He doesn't have a job, after all.

John: Poor Sarah. No matter how hard she tries, it looks like she'll be the one responsible for Vicki's downfall.

Christine: I'm surprised Abigail would question her back and not demand that she look into her eyes to see if she's telling the truth or not. Vicki should hide out in the secret room where Matthew Morgan kept her locked up.

John: How is it that Angelique can survive an exorcism in the old house, even if Vicki is outed as a witch?

Christine: Angelique knows Trask is a fraud and has no real power to exorcise anything. The only power he has is the power to abuse and terrorize.

Dark Shadows Episode 389 - 12/21/67

Angelique returns to her room clutching Sarah's doll. She says she'll make Barnabas pay by making his sister Sarah suffer.

Naomi tells Sarah a story as she sits in front of the fire.

In her room, Angelique takes a pin from a pincushion and pokes it into the dolls belly.

Sarah screams out in pain.

Angelique repeats the process.

Sarah collapses in pain.

Naomi sits over Sarah's bed. She lies sleeping when Barnabas arrives. He says the doctor doesn't know what's wrong with Sarah. He says that perhaps she will recover as he did. Naomi wonders about witchcraft being responsible, and Barnabas asks who would want to hurt Sarah. Sarah wakes up and asks where Vicki is. She says she's afraid she'll never come back. She sends Barnabas to get Vicki. He promises to do that, and tells her to rest. She goes to sleep, and Naomi tells him that he shouldn't have promised to bring Vicki to her. He tells his mother that he knows where Vicki is. Naomi says she doesn't know if Vicki should be allowed in Sarah's room. She asks if she might be responsible. Barnabas assures her that Vicki is not the witch Trask claims her to be.

Barnabas leaves Sarah's room and runs into Ben. He asks if he can do anything for Sarah, and Barnabas says no, leaving him in the hall. Ben realizes there is something he can do, because he knows Angelique is responsible. And he'll kill her if he has to.

Ben enters Angelique's room. He is searching her drawers when she walks in on him.

She asks what he's looking for, and he accuses her of using one of her spells on Sarah. Angelique says she'll do what she has to in order to make Barnabas suffer. Ben says it's no wonder Barnabas doesn't want her. Angelique shows Ben her doll, and he tells her to make Sarah better. She says she won't until Barnabas comes to her. He threatens to kill her, and she reminds him that he can't, as he's under her control.

She tells him to listen to the sound of his heart. She causes it to beat harder, and tells him it's going to burst. She asks if she should spare him, and he begs her to. She asks him to swear allegiance, and he does. She tells him that she can be merciful, but the next time he tries to harm her, she will let him die.

Barnabas brings Vicki to see Sarah. Sarah wakes tells Vicki she missed her, and was afraid she wouldn't come back. She asks Vicki to tell her a story about her doll. She says she couldn't find her doll this morning, and Barnabas tells her he'll find it. Sarah goes back to sleep, and Naomi apologizes to Vicki for even thinking she could do her harm.

Barnabas knocks on the door to Angelique's room. She hides the doll and answers the door. He asks her where Sarah's doll is. She says she put it with Sarah's other toys. He says that he needs to find it, as Sarah is very ill and has requested it. Angelique tells him that she might be able to cure Sarah. He asks if she thinks she knows more about medicine than a doctor. She asks about her pains, and says she knows how to brew a tea that would make her well again, He begs her to make a cup for Sarah, saying he'll do anything for her. She says that if she cures Sarah, she wants him to make her his wife. He agrees, if Sarah is cured. She says she'll go and brew the tea.

Naomi tells Vicki she's concerned Sarah won't survive. Barnabas brings in a cup of tea, saying Angelique made it, and it has restorative powers. He gets Sarah to drink it.

In her room, Angelique removes the pins from Sarah's doll.

In her bed, Sarah tells Barnabas that the pains have gone away. Naomi hugs her.

 Angelique tells Sarah's doll that it has served her well, and now she shall become Barnabas' bride.

Our thoughts

John: It certainly took Angelique a long time to figure out Barnabas' weak spot. But how safe can Sarah be? And will Angelique ultimately be responsible for her death?

Christine: So much for getting him to come to her of his own free will. It certainly seemed like we had the explanation for why Sarah died so young today, but we'll see if Angelique ends up being the cause of her early demise.

John: If Ben were only a little bit smarter... He knows he can't take on Angelique himself, but he could easily get word to Barnabas, or even Trask, to cast suspicion on her. I can't imagine it would take Trask long to be able to prove her allegiance with the devil.

Christine: If Barnabas were only a little bit smarter... He should realize that every time he spurns Angelique, something bad happens to someone he loves. A quick search of her room would reveal all the poppets, pins, bindings, and herbs she's got in there.

John: Um, witch-alert anyone? Where's Trask when we need him? If he had heard Angelique's claim of being able to brew up a restorative tea that miraculously saved Sarah, you know darn well that would have set off his witch detector.

Christine: Where's Abigail when we need her? She should be convincing Trask that he's been bewitched by Angelique's beauty. Angelique may have invented teflon. Incidentally, Sarah's doll house seems awfully familiar...
