Dark Shadows Episode 1186 1/11/71

The court comes to order, and the judges announce that they have arrived at a verdict. They ask Quentin to rise. The tribunal finds him guilty as charged, and he will be beheaded in the public square on a date to be decided. Barnabas says that the defense will appeal, and the judge reminds him there are no provisions for an appeal under the law governing trials of witchcraft. Barnabas points out that the right of an appeal is basic to the judicial system, and they say they won't prevent him from trying. The court is adjourned.

Daphne tells Quentin she can't believe it happened. She says as long as he's alive there's hope. He says as long as he's alive — but he has to start thinking about when he's going to die. She wonders if there's a way to get him out. He tells her to forget about him. Barnabas arrives and says the judges won't listen to reason. Quentin asks if Barnabas told them Gerard was behind the whole thing. Daphne is confused. She thought Gerard was for him. Barnabas says that was his most cunning tactic. If Quentin lost, Gerard stood to gain. And if Quentin were found innocent, he would still win for having stood by his friend. Quentin says Gerard can't claim a complete victory until they take his head. Barnabas says that unless they find some other solution, then it's all over. 

Gerard arrives at Collinwood and finds Gabriel in the drawing room. Gabriel asks why he's not smiling, since he won. Gerard says he lost his best friend. Gabriel asks him to admit what he's won. Gerard says he's only the trustee of the estate until Tad reaches 21. Gabriel says he'll see to it that Tad won't ever reach that age. Gerard points out that he can cut off his allowance if he keeps it up. 

Edith comes in and says she just heard about Quentin. Gabriel leaves, and Edith kisses Gerard. She tells him that she wants to see him tonight at 11. He tells her that he can make it. They don't know that Gabriel is eavesdropping on them as Edith reminds Gerard that she has something coming. He assures her that she will get hers.

Gabriel wheels in and asks Edith if she's ready for tonight. She says she doesn't know what he means. He points out that he knows she's meeting Gerard tonight. He makes fun of her for having so little class as to allow a fraud like Gerard to get a hold over her. She says he does not, but he could because he gets what he goes after. She tells him she's going to live before it's too late. She asks how he's going to stop her as a helpless cripple. She laughs as she goes upstairs. 

Daphne and Barnabas return to Collinwood. She says they can't just sit back and watch him die. Barnabas says he will not. He tells Daphne to go upstairs and rest. After he leaves, she wonders if there's no hope for Quentin. She wishes she never came to Collinwood. She hears music playing in the closed off East Wing.

Edith comes down to the drawing room. She hears a shutter banging, and goes to secure it. She then hears footsteps in the foyer, and calls out to who's there. She goes out and the front door swings open. She closes it and asks who came in the house. The lights go off. She calls out to Gerard. 

She runs upstairs to Gabriel's room but the door is locked. She runs into another room and finds the empty wheelchair. She turns to see Gabriel standing behind her. He explains it's just the two of them in the house. He explains that two people knew he could walk. His father and Randall. She points out that he killed the two of them, and he strangles her. He says he'll find a spot to bury her.

Daphne finds the source of the music in the East Wing. She opens a door and finds the room empty, and music no longer playing. She closes it, hears something, and when she opens it again the room is furnished. She's sure she's dreaming, but she can't get into the room. She sees two people, Valerie and strange man, although the woman is referred to as Catherine. Catherine asks the man why he asked her to meet him. He says his name is Morgan Collins, and he asks her, Catherine Harridge, to marry him. She promises to answer him soon. She points out that there's no one she loves more than him, and he kisses her. He leaves, and there's a knock on the door. 

Daphne sees herself speaking to Catherine. She says she heard them, and asks her sister why she didn't give Morgan an answer. She says she knows that she's only loved one man in her entire life. Catherine says he's been gone for five years, and there are rumors he's coming back. She says he belongs in the past. Daphne says she doesn't know how she can be happy in Collinwood. They leave the room, and it's suddenly empty again. Daphne walks in and assumes that she's hallucinating. She closes the door behind her.

Gabriel carries Edith's dead body into the East Wing. 

Daphne goes looking for Edith and finds Gabriel's empty wheelchair. Gabriel sees her and hides before she can see him. He runs downstairs and goes into the drawing room. Daphne calls to Edith, and goes into the drawing room, where she finds Gabriel standing.

Our thoughts: 

John: I guess it should be no surprise that Quentin was found guilty, considering the evidence against him and the nature of the tribunal... Question is, with the Tate portrait and severe case of lycanthropy, will his severed head not grow old (a la Judah Zachery), and/or sprout hair once a month?

 

Christine: Quentin's portrait won't be painted until 1897, so he doesn't have immortality in this time period. On the plus side, he won't live to become a werewolf. 

 

John: You go, Gabriel! Daniel and Randall certainly didn't deserve to die at his hands, but Edith, by all means, take her away!

 
Christine: Funny that Gerard was the one to tell her she would get hers. Was it all part of his plan?

John: No! Not strange music coming from the East Wing! Not — more parallel time! With only a few months remaining, I have a bad feeling about this...

 

Christine: My thoughts exactly! A parallel excursion seems inevitable. Those of us viewing from the DS Coffin Set have just pulled out our last set of episodes. The end is in sight.

Dark Shadows Episode 1161 12/7/70

Desmond returns with the will. Gabriel demands that Desmond open and read it. Gabriel asks everyone to sit down. Gabriel opens the envelope, and begins reading the will. Gabriel asks who 'gets' it, and Desmond's only words are, "Oh my God." Gabriel smiles, gleefully, boasting that he will be his father's heir. Desmond reads that Daniel's father's timepiece will be bequeathed to Quentin. Samantha is upset that she's not getting more. Desmond continues saying that the heir noted below will act as unofficial guardian of Tad, who, if living at Collinwood at age 21, will receive the entire estate. He adds that Tad and his mother will always have a place in Collinwood, and receive room and board and a weekly stipend set by the heir. Gabriel points out that she should be thankful to get that. Desmond continues to say that if Samantha removes Tad, they will forfeit everything. He closes by saying that until Tad comes of age, he leaves everything to his son, the man he has come to love as a son, Gerard Stiles. 

Gabriel and Samantha are both shocked. She accuses him of planning this all along. Edith laughs. Gerard appears to be surprised. Samantha asks Gerard if Tad will even live to see 21, and runs off. Gabriel says Gerard told him he was the heir. He asks Desmond if he gets anything. Desmond says that Gerard will ensure Gabriel and his family will always have a home at Collinwood, and an allowance commensurate with his needs. Gerard says he had nothing to do with it. Gabriel says he knew Gerard wanted something, he just didn't know the scope of his ambition. Desmond adds that if Quentin is proven innocent, everything will be returned to him. Gerard says that he's happy Daniel wrote that. Gabriel says all Gerard has to do is ensure Quentin is found guilty. He says he won't accept the will, and starts to stand. He sits back down. Gabriel points out that he almost walked. 

Desmond tells Samantha he has great hopes of Quentin being proven innocent. She says he doesn't stand a chance. Desmond reminds her that he's being tried for murder — not witchcraft. She complains about Gerard, and he reminds her that she agreed to marry him once. She says they won't leave the house, and Tad's life will be in danger. Desmond says he won't be in danger as long as Quentin is alive. He tells her to rid herself of her hate of him. 

Dawson arrives at Collinwood and asks Gerard if congratulations are in order. Gerard shushes him, and says so far all he has inherited is a kingdom full of vicious rebels. He says they must go to the village, and offers to take his carriage. Gabriel rolls in and tells him as the new master of Collinwood, he should take the new carriage. Dawson extends his sympathies, and Gabriel tells him that he knows where his sympathies lie. Gerard says he's going to tell Quentin the good news. 

Gerard and Dawson arrive at the jail, and he asks to be let in the cell with Quentin. Mrs. Ward allows it. Quentin asks if he'll be able to attend his father's funeral. Gerard tells him that there is more disquieting news. Gabriel forced Desmond to read the will. Quentin says he doesn't mind. Gerard says if he's proven innocent, everything will revert to him. Quentin points out that in the meantime, Tad will have to live with Gabriel lording it over him that he is the master of Collinwood. Gerard interrupts him to explain that Gabriel didn't get anything. He says that he did. Quentin is surprised. Gerard says Daniel didn't trust Gabriel with the money, and he will merely administer it until Quentin is free. He asks if Quentin trusts him, and he says he does. Quentin says that someone is doing this to him. He says at least in jail, he can't be held responsible for any more killings.

Edith teases Gabriel. He threatens to kill her. She tells him he has nothing to give, and she's glad that she did what she did. Gerard returns, and she taunts Gabriel with that. Gerard tells him that he wishes his thoughts were as kind as Quentin's. Gabriel rolls away, and Gerard sends Edith away. He tells Charles to help himself to anything in the house, as it's all his now. Charles says that it is, for now. Gabriel suggests that if Quentin is tried for witchcraft, he could be found guilty. He says that Quentin pointed out that he couldn't kill anyone while in jail, and Charles suggests Mrs. Ward, and pulls out her scarf. He says he grabbed it just in case...

Quentin tells Desmond that he won't declare his father insane in order to get the will tossed out.

Gerard tells Edith that tonight, she will help them. 

Mrs. Ward tells Quentin not to look at her as she takes his uneaten food.

Gerard performs a ritual, saying that Mrs. Ward's scarf is the Devil's noose. He puts the scarf around Edith's neck and pulls it tight.

Mrs. Ward feels something around her neck, and accuses Quentin. 

Gerard tightens the scarf.

Mrs. Ward begs Quentin to stop. She collapses to the ground. 

Gerard says it's done.

Quentin tries to revive Mrs. Ward, but realizes that she is dead.

Our thoughts: 

John: No real surprise for us at the reading of the will, but plenty of surprises for the rest of Collinwood! It was kind of funny that Samantha was probably as upset about the results as Gabriel was. You'd think she'd be better off with Gerard in control than Gabriel.

 

Christine: With Barnabas and Julia constantly away on break, it seems there will be no chance to change future events at Collinwood. Since we know Tad and Carrie became ghosts as kids, it's seems clear that Quentin will be found guilty, and Gerard will need to get them out of the way to claim the Collins fortune. It remains to be seen what role Daphne will play, and where the zombie pirates will originate. 

 

John: After all this time, I find it hard to believe that Gabriel might 'accidentally' start to stand up in front of everyone. Of course, they all let the issue drop no sooner than it happens, so it appears that his secret is still safe — for now...

 
Christine: He was angry enough to jump out of his seat when he found out Daniel was reinstating Quentin as his heir, so it's not too farfetched to believe he could be angry enough to stand up and want to throttle Gerard.

John: I'm sorry, but that black scarf didn't come close to matching Mrs. Ward's wardrobe. I think it would have been funny if Charles and Gerard's ritual ended up choking out some innocent bystander who happened to leave their scarf in the jail!

Christine: I was wondering why Gerardudah had to use Edith for his choke spell when clay or cloth figures have been the standard up until now, and why Dawson had to be present for that ceremony since he had no involvement. That was weird. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1160 12/4/70

Daniel revises his will when Gabriel wheels in. He demands that he give him the pen. Daniel calls him an ungrateful wretch. Gabriel complains that he was always second to Quentin. Daniel says Quentin is ten times the man that Gabriel is. He says that if Quentin had been the one to have the accident, he would have willed himself to walk again, rather than wallowing in self pity. Gabriel stands up and tells him that's enough. He walks to his father, and Daniel can't believe it. Gabriel explains that he's been able to walk for years, and waiting to get back at Quentin. He says that he killed Randall, and Quentin is going to pay for it. He grabs the will, and Daniel falls to the ground. Gabriel is concerned about his father, and tells him not to tell anyone. He gets back into his chair, and Samantha comes in and asks  what happened. He tells her to get Julia, and after she's gone he gets out of the chair and reviews the revised will, which reinstates Quentin as his heir.

Gerard asks Desmond if he's visited Quentin. He says he did. Gerard asks if they must have their differences, and says he wants to help him. Desmond asks who would want to get rid of Quentin, and why. He points out that Gerard is awfully friendly with Trask. He says that while Trask has his issue with Quentin, he doesn't believe that he would plant voodoo dolls, or kill Grimes' herd. He says there must be someone else. Gerard asks if he means him. He reminds Desmond that he's Quentin's best friend. He says Quentin doesn't have a chance for an acquittal, and Desmond disagrees. He says all of the evidence is circumstantial. He says Quentin will be cleared of the murder charge, and being Quentin's closest friend, that should put him at ease. He walks out and Gerard considers that murder will not be the charge against Quentin...

Samantha tells Gabriel that he doesn't have to stay by his father, because his presence may upset him. Daniel sits up and mentions Gabriel's name. Gabriel tells Samantha to leave, as his father wants to talk to him, and Daniel says he lived a life of lies. Samantha asks him what he's trying to say. He starts to say Gabriel can... and he falls back. Gabriel says that he's dead, and they'll never know what he was going to stay. He says things are going to change, and tells her to leave him alone with his father. Gabriel says he couldn't explain while he was alive, but he always did what he could to be like Quentin. 

Edith walks in, seemingly happy, saying Samantha just told her. She asks Gabriel what he's doing when he places Daniel's revised will in the fireplace. She asks if he made him have the attack. Gabriel tells her to never say that. He points out that he's the new master of Collinwood, and she'll do as he says. He sends her to Rose Cottage to tell them that Daniel is gone. She says he can send a servant, and he agrees, and reiterates his demand that she go.

Desmond is shocked to hear the news. Gabriel asks when, and who was there. Edith says that Gabriel was with him. Desmond asks if Quentin knows, and she says he does not. She says they sent for Trask. Desmond goes to tell Quentin, alone. Gerard says it's interesting that Gabriel was with Daniel. She says that he says he's getting all the money. She says he's holding that over her. She tells Gerard he's worse than Gabriel, as he told her he'd show her a way out of this. He tells her to look into his eyes. He tells her that he has powers, and she can have them, too, if she follows his master. She doesn't understand, saying he only serves himself. He tells her that he has powers, telling her if she touches his hand, it will burn her. She touches it and recoils in fear. He asks her to touch it again. She does, and says it's cold. She asks him to teach her his powers. He explains there is no turning back once she joins his group. He tells her to repeat his words, and begins a Devil incantation. She does. At the end of the ceremony, Gerard kisses her.

Desmond tells Gabriel and Samantha how upset Quentin was. He said that if he had been with his father, he could have made it up to him, and instead he died believing he was a warlock. Samantha says he should have thought about that sooner, and Desmond reiterates his innocence. Gabriel says that Quentin's remorse is genuine, because it isn't every day that one loses a fortune. Samantha says that Gabriel talks as if he's already read the will. She says that if Daniel changed it after Quentin went to jail, it would have been to give everything to Tad. Gabriel says that they should read it now. Desmond disagrees. Gabriel tells him to go to his father's safe and get it, and Samantha agrees. Desmond reluctantly agrees. He leaves, and Gabriel says he will be just as kind as she was when his father was locked in the tower room, and Quentin was lost at sea. He tells her that he'll let her and Tad stay in a room, and provide a very small allowance. 

Edith returns to Collinwood, and Gabriel asks why she didn't return with Desmond. He suggests that she chose to stay with Gerard. She says she did. He tells her she won't see much more of him, and tells her to go to her room. Gerard enters and offers his condolences. Gabriel tells Edith to go to her room again, and asks Gerard to wheel him into the drawing room. 

He tells Gerard that they're going to read the will. Gerard says that he hopes Gabriel will remember him for being a little help to him. He adds that he should receive a little reward of Gabriel's choosing. Gabriel says that Gerard saved his life. He says that as soon as the will is read, he wants him out of the house, and he is never to return. Samantha returns and says she will not stay in the same room with Gabriel. She says it's none of his business. He explains he was a witness to the will, and she asks if he's seen it. Desmond returns with the will, and Edith joins them. Gabriel demands that Desmond open and read it. Gabriel asks everyone to sit down. Gabriel opens the envelope, and begins reading the will. Gabriel asks who gets it, and Desmond's only words are, "Oh my God."

Our thoughts: 

John: Poor Daniel. How many times does one character have to die in a single scene? And really, to what end. Just the tease that he might turn the tables on Gabriel, not that it necessarily would have mattered to any of the other vultures that might be present.

 

Christine: The tease was solely for our benefit, so we might have a moment of thinking the jig was up for Gabriel. 

 

John: I guess it didn't matter that Edith didn't recite the exact Devil-worshiping words that Gerard fed her. I imagine the Devil is pretty willing to play fast and loose with those kind of specifics... What he didn't seem to require was that she forget everything, so I wonder how long before she spills the beans that she too is in league with the Devil.

 
Christine: Unlike Daphne, she has willingly joined his "little group," and the first rule of Devil's club is you don't talk about Devil's club, aka the coven. She is kind of dumb, though, so I could see her boasting that she could put a hex on Gabriel if he pushes her to it. 

John: Damn. That's a pretty ruthless cliffhanger for Friday. It was pretty clear that Gabriel would not be the beneficiary, but it's not clear who would be the new master of Collinwood... Everyone present is sure to be disappointed, which would leave someone not present — perhaps Barnabas? I guess we'll find out on Monday!

Christine: Now that's what a Friday cliffhanger should be! I have to believe Gerard will benefit in some way, otherwise why would he be there? Also, by superimposing the image of Desmond at the end of the episode over the drawing room scene, it seems clear he was looking at Gerard when stating OMG. I hope we get to see Gabriel cry. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1154/1155 11/27/70

Randall sneaks into Gerard's room and snoops around. He finds a box in the bottom drawer of a desk, and opens it up to see the bejeweled mask. He hears someone at the door. It opens and Edith walks in. She asks where Gerard is, and then asks what he's doing there. He turns the tables on her, asking what she's doing there. She says she came with a message from Gabriel. He points out that she's a modern woman, coming to a man's bedroom. She uses Gabriel's disability as an excuse. He asks if Gerard and Gabriel are friends, and then asks her if she knows Gerard better. She says she's done nothing wrong coming there, and asks him again what he's doing. He tells her that he's curious. He then asks Edith how his sister felt about Gerard. He then follows up asking her how well Gerard knows Quentin, and he's surprised to hear that they are the best of friends. They agree not to mention running into each other to anybody.

Gabriel looks around Collinwood for Edith when Mr. Grimes comes looking for Quentin. When he hears that he isn't there, he says he'll go straight to the constable. Gabriel asks him if it's a serious matter. He invites Grimes in to wait for Quentin. Gabriel asks how things are at Weatherby Farm. Grimes tells him that he's not planning to sell them his land. Gabriel says Grimes' cows broke through the fence yesterday, and Grimes points out that they're all dead. 

Quentin arrives and addresses Grimes. Grimes accuses Quentin of being responsible for his herd of cows being killed. Quentin asks if he's been talking to Trask. Grimes says the whole town knows. Quentin pushes Gabriel out of the drawing room. Grimes says there was nothing wrong with his herd when they died. He lists off all the strange phenomena that has been occurring in Collinwood,  Quentin denies having anything to do with it. He tells Grimes to get out. Quentin threatens him, and Gabriel laughs as Grimes runs out. 

In the woods, someone follows Grimes. He hears someone following him, and calls to Quentin, saying he's prepared to fight him. He pulls a gun and fires. Randall appears and asks Grimes what he's doing. Grimes tells him to follow him. They find a paper with the Devil's mark stuck to a tree with a knife. Grimes says it's a warning Quentin left for him. Randall asks him if he's sure it was Quentin. Grimes tells Randall to get his sister out of the house while he still can.

Edith is sitting by the fireplace when she hears someone coming. She hides in the shadows as Gerard comes into his room. She asks him where he has been. He tells her to nevermind. She asks if he's going to be nice to her, or awful as he is sometimes. He kisses her, and then walks away. She tells him she can't stand it at Collinwood anymore. He says she took a big chance coming to his room, and she says he should be glad she did. He asks what she means. She tells him she caught Randall in his room, at his desk. Gerard sees the case with the mask has been opened. She asks him what's in the box, and he tells her she'll find out one night soon. She reminds him that she'll do anything for him. He tells her to go to Collinwood and find out who Randall has talked to.  He says he's going to go to the village to see if Randall is still at Trask's. He kisses her once again, and then sends her away. He hides the box with the mask.

Gabriel is in the foyer when Edith returns to Collinwood. He asks where she has been, and she says she was at the old house. He asks if Barnabas is the new object of her devotion. She asks him if Randall has been there, and Gabriel says he is more her type. She goes to ask someone else. He grabs her hand and says they're going to have a chat about why she went to the old house. She admits that she did not go to the old house. 

Randall comes in and asks them to tell them exactly what is happening in Collinwood, showing them the paper with the Devil's sign. He says it was left as a warning to Grimes. Gabriel dismisses it. Randall says Trask was right that there was something supernatural about his sister's death. He says tonight is the final proof — Desmond's attack through Quentin's voodoo doll. He asks how close Quentin is to Gerard, and Gabriel says very close. He says he's going to the police to meet Trask, and Gabriel tells him he admires how he can step outside his family and harm his sister, nephew and brother in law. He tells Gabriel he has no choice, and leaves. 

Edith is excited to think Quentin might go to jail. Gabriel says if that happens, he has many plans. He asks her why she was asking if Randall was there. She makes up a story about Samantha. Quentin comes in through the back door. Gabriel tells him that Randall is meeting up with Trask to go to the police, because they think he is a warlock. Quentin goes out after them. Gabriel sends Edith up to bed.

Randall waits in the woods for Trask. He hears someone approaching. He's surprised by who he sees. A gloved hand grabs Randall's throat and chokes him. The man stabs another piece of paper with the Devil's mark into the ground next to Randall's body.

Our thoughts: 

John: Who is this Grimes who appears to have arrived out of a Charles Dickens novel?

 

Christine: It was about time Thayer David showed up in 1840 to assume the role of Mordecai Grimes! 

 

John: I love how Randall reluctantly admits there was something supernatural about his sister's death. Oh, your vampire sister who disintegrated when you kept her from he coffin while the sun rose? Supernatural? Really?

 
Christine: That did not make a whole lot of sense, though I assume the supernatural aspect he's citing referred to how she became a vampire, which was instigated unconventionally by witchcraft. 

John: Place your bets on the mystery man! I guess there really aren't too many choices. It seems pretty obvious that it has to be Gerard... but maybe, just maybe, the writers have another trick up their sleeves.

 

Christine: You never know. Sometimes they make us think that it couldn't be the obvious choice and it turns out to be the obvious choice, though every now and then they hit us with something completely unexpected. Let's hope for the latter this time. 

Dark Shadows Episode 1146 11/16/70

From the staircase, Daniel describes seeing Lorna being strangled by Quentin. He falls, clutching his chest, saying that Trask was right — Quentin is a warlock and a murderer. Gabriel wheels in and asks Gerard what he's done to his father. Gerard says that Daniel has had an attack, and sends Gabriel to get a doctor.

Quentin is drinking in the drawing room when Daphne comes in. He asks her how she always seems so calm and tranquil. He flirts with her, and asks if she's frightened of him. He says that she never seems to listen when he speaks to her in a personal way. He describes her as angel among gargoyles. He tells her that his father killed his mother. Gerard comes in and tells Quentin that his father had an attack.

Daniel lies in bed moaning. Edith checks on him, and he tells her to leave. She explains that Gabriel has gone to get Julia. Daniel asks, "Why, Quentin..." Quentin comes in, and Daniel says he's not the man they thought he was. Edith sends the others away as Daniel and Quentin yell at her to leave, too. Daniel tells Quentin that he saw the stairway, and he saw him kill Lorna. He passes out. Gabriel wheels in and says he can't find Julia. Quentin leaves to find another doctor. Edith tells Gabriel that Quentin did something Daniel didn't like. Gabriel tells her to put on a black dress, and she says he's not going to die. Gabriel says not while the will is the way it is, but sends her off, explaining that they are going to sit with his father tonight. Daniel asks about Quentin, and Gabriel explains that he left, but he's going to stay with him. 

Gerard finds Daphne in the drawing room. She gets up to go to her room and he stops her, He apologizes for not showing up for dinner the other night. He tells her that she will give him another chance, and she refuses. As she leaves, he says that she will become one of them. 

Daphne writes in her journal that she feels sorry for Quentin, but she must guard against it.

Gerard takes something of Daphne's, and holds it up against his Devil's sigil. He calls to her, saying her eyelids are becoming heavy, and she will sleep. He says she will see the future she will share with him when she sleeps.

Daphne gets up from her desk and lies on her bed. She dreams of Gerard lighting candles. She comes to him and kisses him. He asks her to come with him, and she says she will follow him anywhere. He asks if she will do his bidding, and she nods. He tells her to come to him tonight in the gazebo. As he leaves, she gets upset, and wakes, speaking his name. 

Gerard says Daphne will wake and remember nothing, except in the darkest part of her mind. Daphne walks in, saying she forgot her books. He starts to make a move on her and she rushes out. He laughs as Edith walks in. She says the house needs a good laugh. He says that's just what she needs, and she adds, "and a couple of other things." He grabs her and kisses her. She pushes him away, saying he treats her like a servant girl. He tells her that he's changed. She tells him he only plays games. He asks if she'd like to understand his games. She tells him yes. He asks if she's good at keeping secrets. She's intrigued. He tells her to do as he does, and he will give her powers, and teach her how to use them. 

Gabriel rolls in and calls his wife. He tells Gerard to go to see his father. He then points out that Edith loved being touched by Gerard. By anyone but him. He says it's her own fault he doesn't touch her, since she hates him. He tells her that she can't ruin what's about to happen to them. He says that Trask has convinced his father that Quentin is involved in the black arts, and Daniel can change his will. Edith says he'll screw it up, like always, and calls him a cripple. He admits that what she married, and that's all she has to depend on. She counters that she has herself.

Quentin tells Daphne that another attack could be fatal for Daniel. Daphne offers to sit up with Daniel until Edith returns. 

Gerard stands at the base of Quentin's staircase. Quentin comes in and asks what his father could have seen, since he didn't kill Lorna. Gerard says it may just have seen what Trask was saying. Quentin says he's established a pattern of receiving letters every three days, at one of two times per day. He tells Gerard to come with him.

Quentin and Gerard make a large scene about leaving to go to Rose Cottage. After they leave, Quentin sneaks back in to the drawing room, and watches the door. After a while, Daphne opens the door with a note in her hand. 

Our thoughts: 

John: I'm beginning to realize that they only needed head and headless body actors for Judah Zachery because unlike Count Petofi and the like, the rest of Zachery's time on the show seems likely to play out in the body of other characters.

 

Christine: Yes, but just like Petofi using Quentin's good looks to take advantage of the ladies, we still know this is the guy hiding behind the pretty face of Gerard Stiles.

John: It seems that Gerard has all of the ladies of Collinwood wrapped around his finger... how is it that none of them seems to be aware of his covert relationships with all the others?

 
Christine: Daphne was aware he was running around with another woman in the dream he sent her. I imagine Edith doesn't care as long as she can get her groove on with Gerard. 

John: It wasn't a particular surprise to find Daphne leaving the notes for Quentin, but the question as to why still remains — is she Joanna's sister? And if she is, won't Randall recognize her?

 

Christine: I'm guessing she has to be a close relation who was living apart from Joanna, which would explain why Randall may not know her. With Quentin putting the moves on her and Judard manipulating her in her dreams, it seems we have the beginning of a love triangle that may lead to the destruction of Collinwood in 1970.
