Chase waits outside the Eagle.

Yaeger knocks Gladstone unconscious with his cane, and then extends the blade. He stabs him as he lies on the dock. Chase calls out asking what's going on. Yaeger runs away, and Chase sees the body of Gladstone. He sees a man's shadow a few feet away, and calls for him to come out so he can see his face. Yaeger comes out, and says with pleasure. He extends his blade, but runs past Chase.

Chase gives chase, following Yaeger back to Cyrus' lab. Yaeger goes to open the safe, but hears Sabrina talking to Chase. He says it's an emergency, and he needs to get into the lab. Yaeger leaves, and Sabrina comes downstairs with Chase. He says nothing appears to be disturbed. She asks who he was chasing. He says he saw a man jump the fence. She asks who the man is, and what he'd be doing in the lab. He tries the door, and she says Cyrus keeps it locked. She says she can get the keys, and he says the man is probably gone. He says he needs to call the police because the man he chased committed murder. She asks if it was John Yaeger, and he says he's not sure. Yaeger listens from outside the door. Chase tells Sabrina to wait until Cyrus comes back. He calls the sheriff to report a murder.

Yaeger realizes he needs to get the antidote without being seen.

Buffie locks up the Eagle for the night. As she's leaving, Yaeger stops her and asks her to do her old friend a favor. She asks what kind of favor he had in mind. He says he desperately needs something. She says she's tired and had a hard night.

He roughly grabs her and says he doesn't have time. He tells her being tired is better than being dead, and asks her what her answer is. She asks what he needs. He tells her that she wouldn't understand, and just needs to follow his instructions. He tells her she needs to go to Cyrus' lab to get something for him. She asks if he's in some kind of trouble. He tells her not to start asking questions. He gives her the key to the side door. She says she doesn't want to break the law; she doesn't have a record. He tells her about the bottle he needs from the safe, and how to open it. She agrees.

Sabrina is still in the lab, pacing. The phone rings, and it's Yaeger, pretending to be Cyrus. He says he's calling from a payphone in Rocksport. He says he met up with a colleague, and will be back in the morning. She asks if he's alright, saying he doesn't sound like himself. He tells her not to worry about him. She asks if he's seen John Yaeger. She says there was a murder in town that he may have committed. He says that Yaeger was scheduled to be out of town. He tells her to lock up the lab and get some rest. He hangs up, and then goes to tell Buffie that she can go to the lab in ten minutes. He tells her to bring it to the cave at the beach below the Collins estate. She tells him that things are getting crazier by the minute.

Sabrina locks up the lab, and hears someone upstairs. Chase comes down, and she tells him Cyrus won't be back until the morning. She says he sounded strange, as if he were not himself. She says he told her, "goodnight, my darling," and all he's ever said in the past is, "my dear." She asked what happened with the police. He says that he found out the man who was killed was named Horace Gladstone. She says he was a friend of Cyrus who came to the lab several times. He asks if they were close. She says they had a professional relationship; he provided chemicals for his work. Chase said he was scheduled to meet him at the Eagle at 10pm.

Buffie arrives at the locked lab door. She hears voices inside, talking about John Yaeger.

Sabrina asks him what it means. He asks if Cyrus and Gladstone were on good terms. He asks her to have Cyrus call him when he returns, and together they go upstairs.

Buffie unlocks the door and goes inside. She removes the painting over the safe. She hears Sabrina tell Chase she left something in the lab, and hides. Sabrina comes downstairs, but doen't see Buffie standing by the door. She goes back upstairs, and Buffie goes to unlock the safe.

Yaeger waits impatiently in the cave.  He sees footprints leading to an opening that appears to be blocked by large stones. Interested in where it leads, he begins to clear them away.

Buffie gets the potion out of the safe, and closes and locks it. She re-hangs the painting, and sneaks back out the locked door.

Yaeger finds himself in a room that he realizes must be part of the old house on the Collins' estate. He sees a coffin, chained shut. He wonders what deep dark secret Will Loomis is keeping from the rest of the world. Thinking the answer might come in handy, he unchains the coffin.

Our thoughts

John: Had to love Yaeger's multiple attempts to re-hang the picture over the safe before he was discovered. But my favorite moment in today's episode was Chase calling the sheriff to report... A MURDER!

Christine: That was rather suspenseful. I was expecting him to be discovered before he got it to hang properly.

John: Why would Yaeger literally return to the scene of the crime. And how is it that neither he nor Buffie were aware of any police presence on the dock investigating Gladstone's murder?

Christine: These are mysteries that are better left unexplored, lest they reveal a plot hole. They are getting a return on their phone booth investment. I expect many more phone calls to be made before that gets retired!

John: It looks like we'll finally be able to retire our 'Second Down for the Count(er)' next week! I wasn't expecting that Yaeger would be the means for Barnabas' release... of course the notion of a vampiric John Yaeger is almost too good to be true! I just hope Barnabas doesn't take him under his wing as another rehabilitation project...

Christine: Can we expect the usual throat grab upon opening of the coffin, or will Barnabas surprise us with an unconventional way of being released from his confinement?

Quentin and Angelexis hold a seance. Quentin calls for Barnabas. They hear weird, outer-space sounds and Julia runs off, breaking the circle. Quentin calls for whoever is there not to leave them. Angelexis tells Quentin to look over his shoulder, where a man stands in the shadows. He says he is Joshua Collins, father of Barnabas. He says they must be warned. He says there is an evil coming to the house. He says they have not seen it yet, but it will appear. Quentin asks how, and he says he does not know what form it will take. He says the evil is living and dead. Angelexis asks how that is possible. Joshua implores him to remember the dead and allow them to rest in peace. He tells him to destroy the evil and restore pride an honor to the house.

The spirit of Joshua disappears, and Quentin says there must be a connection between the original Barnabas and the events in her room. He says he thinks Will Loomis may hold the key to all this. Why else would he have a need to revisit his book. And why would the portrait of Barnabas have a strange effect on the children? She says he must talk to Will. Roger walks in and asks why the lights are out. Quentin says they were holding a seance. He says they spoke to Joshua Collins, former master of the house. Roger says he knows; adding that Will wrote endlessly about him. They discuss Will's book about Barnabas, which Roger suggests is more effective than sleeping pills. He says Barnabas' life was singularly dull. Quentin suggests there's more to Barnabas' life than any of them know.

Cyrus is in his lab when Gladstone comes to see him with a new delivery. He says he's brought him a fresh supply of the compound, and asks if he has the ten thousand dollars in case. Cyrus says he doesn't want his compound, and tells him to leave his laboratory and never come back. Gladstone say he hopes he's joking.

Cyrus tells him he doesn't have as strong a case as he thinks. John Yaeger has gone away for a while, and there's no way he can prove they're one and the same. Gladstone says he can. He says a small but important part of him remains with him--his signatures. He shows him examples and says that a handwriting expert would confirm they're from the same man. Gladstone says he knows Cyrus enjoys being Yaeger, and can't live without him. Cyrus says he can. Gladstone says he'll extend his patience another 24 hours, at which time his secret will no longer be a secret, and his career will be over.

Quentin signs a number of documents for Chase. He picks one up and asks him about it. Chase says it's a new will that Cyrus had him draw up for him. Quentin points out that Cyrus' behavior has been strange since he hired John Yaeger. Chase adds that Yaeger is the lowest possible form of humanity. Quentin asks if Cyrus changing his will has anything to do with Yaeger. The phone rings, and it's for Chase. It's Horace Gladstone. He says he has a document that he thinks Chase will be interested in reading. Chase suggests that he call him at his office, and Gladstone says he'd like to meet in Collinsport about a man named John Yaeger. They agree to meet in front of the Eagle at 10pm.

Angelexis is sitting by the fire when she notices Roger in the room. She says he takes it that Roger was quite fond of her sister. He says that is an understatement; he worshiped her. He tells her of the first time he saw her sister. He says that he loved her more than it was possible to love. She says she's relieved to hear how he felt about her. She says one of the reasons she stayed is to find out who murdered her, and she needs someone who loved and understood her to help. He says that he was there, and believes she died of a stroke.

Chase delivers his new will to Cyrus, who thanks him. Chase asks him to reconsider. He says he'll think about it. Chase asks if he and Yaeger have parted company. He asks if Chase would like to have dinner with him. Chase apologizes, and says he has to meet a man named Gladstone at 10pm outside the Eagle. They agree to have dinner tomorrow night.

Gladstone is on the docks when Yaeger approaches him. He tells Gladstone he was right—he does like being John Yaeger. He says he's got his payment, and Gladstone says they'll settle that another time, as he's meeting someone. Yaeger explains that he knows. He says he's run out of patience, too.

Chase is outside the Eagle when he hears a man call for help.

Our thoughts

John: Well, that explains why Julia ran off last night, breaking the circle... she had the day off today! The mysterious stranger today was immediately recognizable by his bald head! What's most amusing is that no one bothers to mention to Roger his uncanny resemblance to Joshua Collins...

Christine: He wasn't quite so bald in yesterday's episode. I don't think we ever saw Joshua wear such a flamboyant coat back in 1795. So, is Barnabas the living dead evil thing Joshua is referring to, or is he talking about Angelique?

John: Gotta love a lawyer who mixes up confidential documents for different clients. I was initially impressed when he started off by saying he couldn't comment on Cyrus' will, but then he quickly offers up his opinion of John Yaeger. Parallel time lawyers don't appear to be of the same caliber as those 'our' Collins family chooses to employ...

Christine: Mr. Gladstone seems to have quickly evolved to Mr. Madstone. I wonder if Angelique may be responsible for that scar above his eye.

John: Once loose-lips Chase mentioned meeting Gladstone to Cyrus, it was pretty clear we'd see the return of John Yaeger sooner than previously expected.

Christine: As well as the end to Gladstone, though it remains to be seen if he received a fatal wound or just another scar above the other eye. How delightful to see that a telephone booth has been added to the set today!

John: Can the two (rather than three) chains on Barnabas' coffin at the end of today's episode suggest that we're that much closer to the return???

Christine: I think the third chain is just out of shot, but I think it's clear those chains won't hold Barnabas in too much longer. Will we have a Friday disappointment, or will our favorite vampire break free tomorrow?

Gladstone comes to see Cyrus at his lab. He points out that Cyrus is always burning the midnight oil. He asks Cyrus about their little secret. Cyrus doesn't understand what he's referring to. He explains that Cyrus led him to the truth that he and John Yaeger are one and the same. He says that Cyrus will deny it, of course. Cyrus asks why he should deny it... something so ridiculous. Gladstone says the compound will allow for restructuring of chromosomes. He doesn't believe Cyrus' denials, and asks where Yaeger is tonight. Gladstone says he has proof. He reminds Cyrus of how the first batch brought with it amnesia. He then specifies the date on which Yaeger first appeared. And then how Cyrus 'left town' while Yaeger was there. He adds the check for damages Yeager caused at the Eagle... and then the painting at Buffie's.

Cyrus says that Yaeger will not like his interfering. He tells Cyrus to let Yaeger know that he's taken precautions, and has written everything down. He adds that he's willing to maintain the illusion. Cyrus realizes that he wants something. Gladstone says he's woefully underpaid, and creating the compound takes more and more time. Cyrus asks how much he wants, and Gladstone tells him ten thousand dollars. He says that without his compound, John Yaeger will never walk the streets again. He reminds Cyrus not to try to silence him. Cyrus suggests that it's not Gladstone's first attempt at blackmail. Gladstone replies there was a reason his number was in Angelique's phone book. He says that she's lived many lives, and each person only gets one. He bids Cyrus goodnight.

Angelexis brings Quentin to the basement, and tells him Hannah exorcised Dameon's ghost. He wonders why she didn't tell him herself. She asks why he's having so much trouble accepting it. He asks where she found him, and Angelique leads him to the secret door. She says Hannagh sensed it. He sees the skeleton, and says they have to call the police, and tell them Dameon was murdered in the house. She asks how he's going to explain knowing they're Dameon's bones. He points out that he was murdered, and she replies by asking him what he's doing about Angelique's murder.

In the drawing room, Elizabeth tells Julia that when the car wasn't at the station to meet her, she assumed she was still away. Julia says she just got back. Elizabeth says Quentin is very inconsiderate. She asks about her vacation, and Julia says she missed the house. Elizabeth asks her to fix her a brandy.

In the foyer, Angelique is on the phone telling Hannah that Quentin wasn't suspicious.

Elizabeth asks Julia to tell Quentin that she'd like to see him.

Angelique tells Hannah that no one will suspect the truth when Julia walks into the foyer. Angelexis asks her what she's staring at. She hangs up on Hannah and tells Julia she missed her. Quentin comes downstairs and welcomes Julia back. She tells him that Elizabeth wants to see him.

Quentin asks Elizabeth if she enjoyed her stay in New York. She tells him she saw Maggie. He says he's not interested in what she has to say. She says Maggie wants him to come to New York, and recommends that he go if he loves her. He says that she left him. She says that she felt forced, thinking Alexis was Angelique. He asks if she knows Alexis is still in the house. She says that Maggie assumed that, not knowing that Angelique is eavesdropping on their conversation. Quentin says he doesn't want a child for a wife, who runs away and sulks.

Cyrus does a post-mortem examination of the skeleton, saying that he didn't die from the bullet wound. He says he probably died from loss of blood. Quentin wonders if he should call the police. Dameon was Angelique's friend. He assumes Bruno killed him, but if he says something, it will bring up talk of Angelique. Edwards will still be dead. Cyrus asks about Bruno, and Quentin says he'll take care of him. He asks Cyrus to help him bury the remains.

Julia tells the portrait of Angelique that she was sure she would be at the house when she returned. She says she really felt it. As she says she was there to make things ready for her, as she always did when she was away, Angelexis comes in behind her. Julia turns and apologizes to her. Alexis realizes Julia misses her very much. Julia says she was her friend. Angelexis says she needs a friend to help her find out who killed her sister. She says that after Julia left, there was a seance...

Cyrus and Quentin share a drink in the drawing room after having buried Dameon's remains. Quentin tells him that sometimes he thinks he's losing his mind. He asks Cyrus if he heard of Barnabas Collins. Cyrus says that Will Loomis was writing a book on him. Quentin says he's re-writing the book on him. He wonders why. He adds that Amy went into a trance when she saw Barnabas' portrait. And then he adds Angelique's room being empty, seeing Daniel and Amy talking about Barnabas, and not being able to enter. He says it doesn't make sense. Cyrus suggests that he go away from the house for a while to take a rest.

Quentin returns to Angelique's room and when he opens the door, he once again finds the empty room, but this time he sees Elizabeth talking to Julia. She mentions how she didn't believe when Roger told her about parallel time. Julia says she must, and she says that they must close the room since Barnabas disappeared. Julia says it's the only chance of his returning. She adds that if she thought she could join him she would stay forever. She calls to Barnabas asking if he can hear her. She asks if he's standing in the hall in the other band of time, watching and listening to her. Julia wonders if his terrible curse has been discovered. Quentin calls to her, and from behind him, Julia asks what he wants.

Our thoughts

John: It was one thing for Angelique to have seen Dameon's skeleton standing before she made him reappear, but by the time everyone else has paraded by him, including Dr. Longworth (who I was surprised didn't offer an expert opinion that Edwards died due to loss of flesh), wouldn't someone question that?

Christine: Dr. Longworth should have questioned who fused all the bones together so they would not only remain upright, but connected. Dameon Edward's skeleton should rightly be lying in a heap on the floor.

John: I guess Cyrus isn't really on top of the Collins family news, not realizing that Will's book on Barnabas not only had been published, but also appears to have sold out and gone out of print.

Christine: I thought it was interesting that Mr. Gladstone alluded to the fact that he's also blackmailed Angelique. While that doesn't surprise me, I find it difficult to believe that he's lived to tell about it. It could be that he has certain chemical compounds she depends on him delivering as well.

John: What a lucky break for Quentin to open the door on parallel time just in time to get a full explanation of what's going on in the house. Sadly, despite all of (our) Julia's exposition, it's not clear that he understood any of it.

Christine: Still, it is nice to stay in touch with the parallel Collins family, and know that they're trying to locate Barnabas.

Dark Shadows Episode 1006 5/4/70

Angelique finds the lever to open the secret vault. Inside is a wide-eyed skeleton! Angelique takes a candelabra and brings it into the vault, but the candles are blown out. She tells Dameon to watch closely as she re-lights the candles. As she lights the seventh, he appears before her. She tells him she gave him every opportunity to leave her alone, but he refused. He says she got Bruno and Trask to do it for her. She says Bruno loved her the way she wanted to be loved. Dameon says that no man loved her like he did. She tells him to keep looking into her eyes. She says she understands he wants revenge, but he can't upset her plans. He says he won't rest until Quentin knows the truth about her. She says she summoned him, and she can send him away. He tells her the candles have no power over him. She tells him to try to move, to snuff the candles out. He realizes that he can't move.

She says the seventh candle made him appear, and when it's snuffed out he'll return to his tomb, never to be seen again. He begs her not to. She says goodbye and snuffs out the candle. Dameon disappears, leaving just his skeleton behind. Angelique laughs, says Quentin will be hers again, and nothing can stop her.

At the Eagle, Yaeger bothers Buffie at work. She tells him she has to make a living. He says he'll just stand there and watch her. He says he hopes she's not going around saying nasty things about him, like she did with Cyrus.

A stranger arrives and introduces himself to Yaeger as Larry Chase—Chris Collins' partner. He adds that Chris is Cyrus' lawyer. Yeager tells Buffie to get Chase a drink, and Chase says he doesn't drink while doing business. Chase says he wants to know why Cyrus is putting so much money in his name. He says it was partial payment for services rendered relating to his experiments, but he doesn't believe it. Yaeger asks how someone could blackmail Cyrus. No one could dig up dirt on him, mocking him as a vegetable—a cloistered bore. Chase tells Yaeger that he's not only arrogant and disgusting, he's a model of ingratitude. Yaeger says he just speaks the truth. Chase says he's going to see Cyrus tonight, and will tell him what Yaeger thinks of him. Yaeger adds that he doesn't think he'll see Cyrus tonight. He invites Chase to try to convince Cyrus to change his mind. Chase tears up the documents he brought Yaeger to sign. Yaeger tells him there will be trouble if he ever gets in his way again.

As he leaves, Gladstone arrives. Chase goes to the bar and orders a scotch. He asks Buffie if she's interested in Yaeger, and what she knows about him. She says she doesn't really know him at all. He asks if she's just afraid to talk about him, and bids her goodnight. After he leaves, Gladstone picks up the torn document off of Chase's table and slips it into his jacket.

Yaeger returns to the lab. He removes the potion from the safe. While he doesn't want to be Cyrus again, he knows he has to bring the lawyer in line. He takes a swig and grimaces, and reverts to Cyrus.

Cyrus is working in the lab when there's a knock at the door. He goes upstairs and lets Buffie in. She asks why he told Yaeger the awful things about her. He says he didn't tell Yaeger anything awful. She asks why he didn't just tell him the truth, and he claims he did, but that Yaeger is jealous. He offers to talk to him, and she says if he does, he's liable to beat her up again. Cyrus is shocked to hear it. He says he didn't know Yeager could get that angry. There's another knock on the door and he rushes her out the back door. She doesn't notice Gladstone in the shadows.

Chase tells Cyrus that he's appalled at what he's doing. Cyrus asks if he got his signature for the bank account, and Chase says he did, and then he ripped it up. He asks why Cyrus needs Yaeger. Cyrus reiterates that he wants the bank account opened in Yaeger's name, and he also wants him to change his will so that everything goes to Yaeger in the event of his death or disappearance. Chase asks why, and Cyrus says he has his reasons. Chase says he's not just his attorney, he's his friend. Cyrus implores him to make the requested changes as soon as possible.

Buffie is fiixing her hair when there's a knock on her door. It's Gladstone. He tells her he saw her at the Eagle. He says he wants to ask her a few questions, and she invites him in. He asks her about her relationship with Cyrus. She accuses him of being a spy for Yaeger. He explains that she's a closer friend to Yaeger than he is. She tells him he should go. He notices the painting behind her, and asks her where she got it. She says a gentleman friend. He asks if it was Cyrus, and she says that it's not any of his business, but she got it from Yaeger. He's surprised, and bids her goodnight as he leaves.

Our thoughts

John: It looks like they gouged the eyes out of our wide-eyed skeleton! Of course, he still looks particularly handsome in the black and white kinescope...

Christine: It's really hard to tell from the kinescope, and we didn't get a very good look at our bony old friend yesterday, but it is pretty creepy to think that Bruno may have gouged out Dameon's eyes either before or after he killed him. It was somewhat amusing to see that Angelexis is powerful enough to freeze a ghost in place, and that a dead thing would be so terrified to be unable to move.

John: I was kind of hoping that Cyrus would be wearing Yaeger's clothes when the lawyer came to see him. It turns out they had other plans for giving away his secret.

Christine: A new lawyer is in town with little explanation for why he's standing in for Chris. After a bit of research, I discovered that Episode 1001 was Don Briscoe's last episode. I wonder how or if they will explain his disappearance.

John: So Gladstone figured everything out thanks to the painting! Not that he was providing a compound that facilitated changing someone's physical being... that appears to have just been a coincidence. Will this trigger Cyrus to do a Hulk-like change into John Yaeger? Can Gladstone possibly survive the night? I guess we'll find out tomorrow!

Christine: I expect nosy old Gladstone is going to want in on the experiment and will try to cut a deal. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Are the actors getting bored, or is this just another day of having fun with the magnifying lens?
