Julia clutches her notebook as she stands in front of Barnabas' portrait. She tries to find a place to hide it in the house, and settles on the grandfather clock in the foyer.
Carolyn stops in to see Barnabas, telling him that Julia's notebook wasn't in her room. She also tells him that Julia found her in her room looking for it. He says that if she thinks her life is in danger, she'll work on hiding that where it can't be found. He tells Carolyn to go back to the house, and keep an eye on Julia. He needs her to find the notebook, and also to prevent Julia from destroying him when he's vulnerable. He tells Carolyn that Julia will die as soon as they have her notes.
Liz finds Julia pacing in the foyer, and offers her a drink. She asks how her work is going, and Julia says she's almost finished. She explains she'll be leaving in another week. Carolyn enters and says they'll be sorry to see her go. She asks several probing questions, and her mother scolds her.
Julia leaves to go to the old house, and Liz tells Carolyn that Mrs. Hoffman is a guest, and she will apologize to her when she returns.
Julia arrives at the old house, and Barnabas lets her in. Julia tells him that she knows he has no use for her, and that he can't be rid of her as long as she has her notes on him. She explains that it's hidden where he'll never find it. He says she's lying, and she explains that it's in the possession of someone who would turn them over to the authorities if anything happens to her. He says he can't tolerate her betrayal of him by hypnotizing Vicki. He tells her that Carolyn overheard everything she said to Vicki. Julia tries to convince him that pursuing Vicki is a mistake. He reminds her that once he has her notes, she will die.
Carolyn tells Liz that she doesn't want to keep waiting for Julia to return in order to apologize. Liz asks her what's troubling her. She claims that she's just been moody lately. Hoffman returns, and Liz asks her in to the drawing room. Carolyn apologizes for her behavior earlier.
Liz goes upstairs, and Carolyn asks to speak to Julia. She tells her that she knows she's in love with Barnabas.
Julia tries to convince Carolyn help her treat Barnabas' condition. Carolyn tells her that she should give her the notebook and then leave Collinwood. As they stand before the grandfather clock, Carolyn points out that it didn't go off on the hour.
Our thoughts
John: I wonder if Julia's notebook will end up in the hotel safe alongside Sam Evans' letter.
Christine: I'm sure Mr. Wells would keep it locked up safely for her. I love how Barnabas tells Carolyn to watch "Hoffman" in such a way that she won't know that Carolyn is watching her. He obviously does not know his minion very well. I don't think being stealthy is within her skill set.
John: Liz calls Carolyn on the carpet for being a bitch to Julia. With even Liz noticing her eccentric behavior, you'd think she'd realize that she needs to dial it down.
Christine: I don't think Barnabas would approve, but it serves him right for deciding to feed on his impetuous, young cousin.
John: Uh oh. Looks like Julia screwed up the clock when she hid her notebook. I'm surprised Carolyn didn't run right over and open it up. Maybe tomorrow...
Christine: I don't understand why Julia thought that would be a safe place to hide it. She should have stuck it in an undergarment. Much to her chagrin, Barnabas would not search for it there. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Julia told Liz what Barnabas did to Carolyn, as she threatened to do. Between David's accusations and Carolyn's odd behavior, Liz might actually believe her.
