Barnabas tells his father that he is a vampire. Joshua asks his son to forgive him as he aims his pistol and fires at Barnabas. He is shocked when Barnabas is not killed by the shot to the chest. Barnabas reiterates that he is already dead.
Joshua says what happened to Barnabas defies all reason. He says if one can be cursed, one can be released from a curse. Barnabas says Angelique would not let it happen. Joshua asks what Angelique has to do with it, and Barnabas explains that what happened to him, Josette, Sarah and Jeremiah were all due to her. Joshua is shocked to find that Angelique was the witch, and realize that Vicki has been wrongly convicted. He says that he'll ensure she is freed, and Barnabas asks how he will do that. He says he will find a way, and then he will find a way to release Barnabas from his curse. He tells him he will call upon Reverend Trask, and Barnabas explains that Trask is dead.
Joshua asks if Barnabas killed him, and his son admits that he did. Joshua asks if he killed Abigail, and Barnabas says he did not. Joshua says he will take Barnabas to the main house, where he will isolate him in the tower room until he can help him. Barnabas refuses to be locked up. Joshua tells him that he will have to kill him, then, as he will not keep his secret. He says he will tell his mother. He offers Barnabas the option of coming with him, or killing him.
Millicent is in the drawing room when Daniel comes downstairs calling for her. He tells her he's afraid. He's had bad dreams since they've been at the house. The sounds of dogs howling outside scares him. He says something bad happens whenever the dogs howl like that. She tells him he needs a change of scenery. He's excited to hear that they may be leaving Collinwood. She explains that she's going to marry Nathan Forbes, and she wants him to be happy about that. Daniel says he likes Nathan. Naomi joins them, and tells Daniel to run along to bed.
Once he's gone, she asks Millicent if she's sure she wants to go through with the marriage tomorrow. Millicent says she really loves Nathan, and Naomi asks if she thinks he really loves her. Millicent asks if she feels like Joshua that Nathan only wants her money. She says she's so sure, she'll have all of her money and property transferred into Daniel's name in the morning. Naomi asks if she has spoken to Nathan about that. Millicent says Nathan will be able to support her. Naomi suggests that Nathan is entitled to know what she's planning to do. Millicent explains that Nathan once told her she could renounce her entire fortune and he'd still love her. She goes up to bed.
Joshua returns home alone. He stares at the portrait of Barnabas, and then turns to see Naomi watching him. He asks if she has seen Ben. She asks him to tell her what's wrong. She wants to know what changed his thoughts about Forbes. Joshua says that Millicent didn't need his consent to be married, so he approved to make her happy. He tells her the marriage will take place tomorrow. She asks him why he went to the old house after he spoke with Forbes. He said he just decided to take a walk, and she then asks why he brought a pistol.
She tells him she knows something happened that almost destroyed him, and she has a frightening feeling that it has to do with Barnabas. He says that's absurd, and leaves her to stare at her son's portrait in the foyer.
Joshua leads Barnabas to the tower room in Collinwood. He tells him he must stay there. He explains that Ben will bring him everything he needs once everyone has retired for the night. Barnabas asks if he understands the risk he is taking. He says Angelique will try to stop him. Joshua says that she's dead, and Barnabas reminds him that she's a witch. Joshua tells him he will deal with her when it becomes necessary.
Joshua returns to the drawing room to find Naomi staring out the window. He tells her it's late, and she should go to bed. She asks him if he was in the tower room, as she sees a light there. He says that no one has used the tower, and there is no one in it tonight.
Barnabas stands in the shadows in the tower room. Waiting.
Our thoughts
John: I love that Barnabas tells his father that Abigail was dead before he laid a hand on her... oops! So he WOULD have killed her, if he had only gotten to her first.
Christine: Trask is dead already? Whatever happened to the plan to have him die slowly and horribly? I was expecting to at least hear some scraping and wailing from behind the wall. What a letdown.
John: So there's a tower room in Collinwood? And in all the years, I mean months, um, make that weeks... that they've lived in the new house, no one has ever been in there? Sure, Joshua, Naomi was just imagining the light in that room.
Christine: After all the intro shots we've seen, you've never noticed the tower before? There are more than 40 rooms at Collinwood, so you can't expect that they've explored them all in the short time they've been there, especially since they've been busy burying a lot of family members lately. How long before Naomi goes to see who's up in the Tower? The shot of the tower at Collinwood today has me thinking of the tower in Nosferatu.
The tower in Nosferatu. |
John: I feel bad for Ben. He's somehow got to single handedly drag a coffin up to the tower room. I can't see this as a lasting solution. I think they're going to have to get Barnabas a nice apartment closer to town...
Christine: Out of the many rooms available at Collinwood, you would think Joshua might choose a less conspicuous place to house him, instead of locking him up in the spartan tower like Rapunzel.

Will the Tower Room become the new Collins Mausoleum at Eagle Hill Cemetery? It went from a place that "nobody ever goes" to freakin' Grand Central Station!
After Barnabas reminds Joshua that Angelique is a witch, I was waiting for him to add, “How did you like being a cat?”
The tower room, the worst hiding place in Collinwood.
I'm cracking up at the idea that anyone would be surprised there's a tower room, when 446 episodes in a row have shown an exterior shot of the tower. :)
