Dark Shadows Episode 1134/1135 10/30/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Barnabas says he knows Angelique is responsible for Roxanne's suffering, and asks her where the doll is. He demands that she remove the pins. She asks why he wants her to live. She says if she dies they can spend eternity together forever. Angelique says her fate is in his hands. She wants him to live with her as man and wife, and if he refuses, Roxanne will die from his attack, and become as he is — a vampire. She tells him to make up his mind. He asks her to listen to reason. He asks if he can speak to Roxanne first. She says he has betrayed her in the past. She tells him to write Roxanne a letter rather than going to see her.

Julia has set up a Frankenstein laboratory. Leticia walks in and is impressed by what she's done. The headless body lies on an operating table.

Julia turns on the machinery and Leticia is impressed. She claims Julia is a sorceress. She asks about the medical instruments, and Leticia says a nice young man will bring them to her at Rose Cottage. Julia sends her to get them, and tells her to hurry, since she has to return to Collinwood before Barnabas starts wondering where she is.

Leticia reviews the medical instruments. Gerard bursts in and asks where she has been. He tells her to spend time with Flora, who's writing a book with her as a character. She says she doesn't have time, and Gerard reminds her that Flora is their last chance. Leticia says he should go charm Flora. He asks where she's going, and she tells him she's going out.

Barnabas tells Julia he must do as Angelique wishes, or Roxanne will become a vampire. He notices Julia is distracted, and she says she's not sure what to do. Barnabas says he's going to write Roxanne and tell her goodbye. Julia excuses herself to get something. She passes Angelique on her way upstairs. Angelique finds Barnabas and tells him Roxanne's bleeding will stop as soon as she received his letter. She adds that she's looking forward to living in the old house again. She goes to pack her things, and Barnabas approaches the fireplace with his note, and then stops.

Julia comes downstairs, and Angelique tells her that she's going to the old house. Angelique asks her if they met before. She says she had the feeling that Julia knew who she was. Julia says Barnabas told her about her. Angelique says she wants her to know that she's no more Barnabas' sister than she is. She says the intriguing question is who she is, and what she is to Barnabas. Julia says she's devoted to him. On her way out, Angelique tells Julia that she is no longer welcome at the old house.

Barnabas asks Julia where she's going, and she says she's going to Rose Cottage to see Flora, and will see Roxanne on her way.

Leticia falls asleep in the makeshift laboratory. She has a vision of she and Julia working with the body of Zachery with the head attached. Julia says he has no vital signs, and tells her they failed. Leticia says he will punish them, and tells her to look into the empty head box. Julia says something is taking shape inside the box. They both look and see a mask. Leticia says the mask has powers. She says they cannot succeed without it. She says they must find it and place it upon his face.

Julia tells Leticia to wake up. Leticia says if they don't find the mask, they will die. Julia asks her if she saw the mask before, and she says it was only in her dream. Julia assumes the mask was buried with the body. She says Desmond took it. Leticia says that it must be in Rose Cottage. Julia tells her to get the mask now, as there will be a lightning storm tonight needed to restore the lifeforce to the body.

Leticia searches Rose Cottage for the mask. She finds a box and picks the lock on it. Inside, she finds the bejeweled mask. She takes the box and runs into Gerard. He asks what she was doing in the room alone in the dark. He asks what's in the box, and takes it from her. He picks up the mask, and asks where she found it.

Our thoughts:

John: Angelique and Barnabas sure do seem comfortable speaking freely in Collinwood. It's amazing that everyone isn't aware that she's a witch and he's a vampire.

Christine: You'd think they'd at least go to the Old House to have those conversations where nobody is likely to walk in on them. Julia's lab is quite impressive. I am wondering how all that equipment was discreetly carried through the graveyard and installed in the secret tomb. Did Julia lug it all there or do you suppose the headless corpse was tasked with bringing the very large mirror down there?

John: Do you think Julia picked up a 'Save the Clock Tower' flyer in the future that made it clear there would be a lightning storm on this particular night in 1840?

Christine: She may have, though it's more likely she did what everyone else did in those times and consulted the Farmer's Almanac.

John: This whole disembodied head storyline is a bit of a muddled mess. The head and body can't be destroyed, but now they can't be revived without the mask? If the mask needed to be with the body to give it life, it shouldn't have been able to leave the secret grave without it, right? Am I expecting too much?

Christine: I don't know if we were ever supposed to try and make sense of the goings on in this show. We have characters using a specific toss of the I Ching wands and a staircase for time travel, so now may not be the time to start expecting there be any plausibility to the storylines. Just enjoy the ride.

Dark Shadows Episode 1133 10/29/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Quentin finds another note on the table next to him. He recognizes Joanna's writing, mentioning how they have no chance for happiness, since his wife would never allow it. It says this time they will not let his wife ruin it. He says Joanna must not be dead, but Mrs. Purdy says she is. He can't figure out how he keeps getting these notes.

Trask walks in and Quentin asks if he ever performed services for a woman named Joanna Mills. He says there was a Mills — Frank. Quentin reiterates Joanna, and Trask says he didn't perform her service. Trask tells Quentin that he thinks Barnabas' father had something to do with his own father's disappearance. He says there is no record of Barnabas' father's death in London. He also adds that there is no record of the current Barnabas living in London. He asks Quentin if he's considered that Barnabas might be an imposter. Quentin says he certainly looks like his father's portrait, and Trask says he may look be too similar. Quentin says he doesn't know what he means, and suggests his questions have to do with his rivalry with Barnabas over Roxanne Drew. Trask asks to speak to Samantha, and Quentin says he'll let the servants know he's waiting for her, and walks out.

Trask admires the portrait of Barnabas when Angelique comes in. She is shocked to see him. He sees her and asks if they know each other. She introduces herself as Valerie Collins, Barnabas' wife. He's surprised. He says he had no idea he was married, and excuses himself.

Quentin finds Joanna's grave, showing she died in 1839. He now believes she's dead, but can't understand how he received a note from her.

Roxanne tells Trask that she's leaving to go to Collinwood. He asks her if Barnabas will be seeing her there. She says he has been very kind of her. Trask mentions that Barnabas was concealing the fact that he is married from her. She says she doesn't believe him. Trask says he seems to have neglected to tell anyone of his marital status. She tells him goodnight and leaves.

Angelique stares into the fire when Barnabas comes in looking for Quentin. She says they have a great deal to discuss, and Barnabas says they have no more to say. She asks about Julia, his 'sister.' She reminds him his sister was Sarah, and he says she's responsible for Sarah's death. She replies that perhaps she can do the same for Julia. She asks where he found this sister, and he tells her to make up any story that will satisfy her.

Angelique asks if Julia knows what he is, and if he loves her. He explains that they're just friends. She asks where he found such a good friend. He tells her it's not wise for them to discuss things in Collinwood. He asks if she intends to threaten Julia, and she says as long as he's not in love with her, she's in no danger. She goes to get tea.

Roxanne arrives at Collinwood. Barnabas sees her, and she refers to him as Mr. Collins. She asks him if it's true that he's married. He reluctantly admits it. He asks her to forgive him, and says there's no possible way for him to explain. She says she was terribly wrong about him. Angelique comes in with tea, and Barnabas introduces them. Roxanne goes upstairs to see Samantha.

Angelique realizes that Roxanne is the one he loves. Barnabas tells her that she's imagining it. Angelique asks if she'll find wounds underneath the lace around her neck. Barnabas tells her to leave Roxanne alone. She says he has no right to give her orders. She runs off and he asks her to promise him, but she refuses.

Quentin returns to Collinwood, and finds Barnabas upset. He asks if he's heard any reports of the headless man. Barnabas says he had some things to discuss with him, but then sees a note underneath the door. Quentin picks it up and says, Joanna. He asks Barnabas to leave him, and he does. Quentin reads the letter, which says she will be waiting for him at the oak tree.

Roxanne returns to her home and finds Trask waiting for her. He asks her if she met Mrs. Collins, and believes him now. She says she does.

Angelique speaks to Roxanne in the fire, saying that Barnabas is hers, and shall remain hers. She lifts up a voodoo doll and says that she must pay for loving him. She prepares to stick it.

Roxanne grasps her throat and falls to the ground as Trask asks her what's the matter. He turns her over and finds a bloody wound on her neck.

Barnabas asks Quentin if there's anything he can do to help. Quentin tells him he had a crazy idea of building a staircase that he could use to travel through time. He says he believes a person could go back in time and change what has already happened. Quentin leaves, and Barnabas says he must let him help him.

At the oak tree, Quentin calls to Joanna. He finds another note saying she can't understand why he didn't come.

Trask tells Barnabas that Roxanne's wounds were reopened and the doctors couldn't stop the bleeding. Barnabas says he'll send his sister over right away. Trask leaves, and he sees Angelique at the top of the stairs. He says he knows she's responsible, and asks him where the doll is. He demands that she remove the pins. She asks why he wants her to live. She says if she dies they can spend eternity forever. Angelique says her fate is in his hands. She wants him to live with her as man and wife, and if he refuses, Roxanne will die from his attack, and become as he is — a vampire.

Our thoughts:

John: I loved Trask's reaction to hearing that Barnabas was married. It was as if suddenly nothing else mattered! Sorry pop, no time to avenge your death now, I have to got tell the girl of my dreams that her new beau is married!

Christine: It was funny the way he delivered the news with the gusto of a gossipy old hen. If Joanna's gravestone seemed familiar, it's because it was the same style used for Jeremiah Collins' grave.

Episode 396

John: Poor Julia. She's in no danger because she'll never get out of the friend-zone with Barnabas!

Christine: His declaration that they are only friends proves that he really loves her, as he sought to protect her from Angelique by downplaying their relationship.

John: What was with shoe-horning Quentin's time-travel staircase plans into the narrative today? And since the staircase is how Julia arrived in 1840, wouldn't that suggest that the magic staircase had already been created? Wouldn't she otherwise be limited to going back to the time once it was built and functional?

Christine: It's possible that Quentin's staircase only became a reality because Julia and Barnabas traveled to the past to convince him to build it. Try and wrap your brain around that time travel conundrum. Quentin was having a rough day today. First, he cursed while struggling to open Joanna's note, then he thumped his head on the door frame! Could it have anything to do with the brandy?

Dark Shadows Episode 1132 10/28/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Leticia leads Julia to the body. It's lying on the ground in the secret grave. Julia says it's not moving. Leticia uncovers the boxed head, and Julia stares into Judah Zachery's eyes. She realizes that Leticia is under his power. She turns away, but can't help but return to stare into his eyes.

Leticia asks Julia if she knows what she must do, and she says they are to join the head with the body. Julia checks the body and asks Leticia for her brooch. She pokes the body with the pin, and says the body is perfectly preserved.

Quentin looks at the unsigned note. He reads Joanna is dead and you are responsible. An old woman, Mrs. Purdy, arrives and he leads her into the drawing room. He asks her if Joanna is dead, and she nods. She said she knew when she got his letter that he wanted the details. She says when she rented Joanna the cottage, she didn't ask any questions. She knew she was a widow, and didn't become her friend until he stopped coming there. She says Joanna was never herself after he left. She only spoke of him. He explains that he couldn't get a divorce, and that's why he stopped coming. She says the last time she saw her, she told her about Quentin being at sea. She adds that she went to see her the next day and she found her with her wrists cut. She didn't want to live, and the doctors insisted she go to an asylum. She then escaped from the asylum, and her body was found washed up on the shore. Quentin has trouble believing it. He says someone else knows, and blames him. He shows her the note.

Samantha comes downstairs at Collinwood just as there's a knock at the door. Daphne introduces herself as the new governess hired by Mr. Collins. Samantha is surprised. Daphne apologizes for upsetting her as Quentin appears and welcomes her. Samantha glares at him. He sends Daphne into the kitchen. Samantha follows him into the drawing room. She tells him that she hires the governesses, and he says that used to be one of her responsibilities.

Daphne writes in a diary that at last she is in his house, and she must be careful that he not know how close death is. She admires a small pistol.

Gerard deals out Tarot cards when Samantha walks in. She asks if he sees her in his future. She explains that she couldn't come before, because Quentin won't let Tad leave. She begs him to hold her, and he says no. She reminds him that he loves her, and married her. He says the marriage is not legal. She tells him they'll show Quentin, and he tells her that she's wrong. She realizes that he wanted her for her money.

Quentin tells Gerard he wishes he hadn't told him. Gerard says he realized he risked his friendship by telling him, but he felt they must be completely honest with each other, lest they become enemies. Daphne comes in, and Quentin introduces them. Gerard kisses her hand. Quentin takes Daphne upstairs to show her Tad's schoolbooks, and Gerard tells him that he has to send her back to him when they are through.

Gerard sees a pouch Daphne dropped on the floor, and looks inside to find the small pistol. He puts it down and Daphne comes back in. He says Quentin kept his word and sent her back to him. She says she forgot her reticule. He says she did, and it was quite a mistake, if she planned to kill Quentin. She looks at him, and he calls her a modern-day woman. She's surprised he went through her things, and he tells her that he's shameless. He asks her why she carries it. She refuses to answer. She says she doesn't intend to die like the last governess. He takes her arm and tells her that he will walk her to the bedroom.

Leticia asks Julia where she's supposed to get the drugs she asked for. Julia reiterates that she needs everything on the list. Leticia says she doesn't want to see his eyes if they fail.

Quentin sits in the drawing room, wondering who could know about Joanna.

Samantha comes downstairs and bumps into Gerard. He asks if she's seen Daphne. She asks him what he's doing in the house, and tells him to get out. He says only Quentin can tell him to get out. He says he's going to see Flora, and she tells him never to come back.

Quentin finds another note on the table next to him. He recognizes Joanna's writing, mentioning how they have no chance for happiness, since his wife would never allow it. She says this time they will not let his wife ruin it. He says Joanna must not be dead, but Mrs. Purdy says she is. He can't figure out how he keeps getting these notes.

Our thoughts:

John: How do you think the head knew that Julia had Frankensteining experience? How many disembodied heads and headless bodies have access to just such a resource?

Christine: This is Dark Shadows, where supernatural creatures know all, have the power to do all, and cannot ever be truly killed. The Head probably drew Julia back to the past just for that purpose. Incidentally, was the Headless Body out partying all night or just rolling around in the dirt? What's with all the powder it picked up on it's suit overnight?

John: So now we know... the mystery dead friend was the previously never-mentioned Joanna? Timing would suggest that Daphne was Joanna's pal in the sanitarium, the one leaving all the notes, and providing her with a motive for killing Quentin. I hope I'm surprised, but I won't be holding my breath.

Christine: I assume that Joanna was the one fling Quentin referred to when he and Samantha argued about her choice to be with Gerard, so she may have been mentioned, but unnamed. Daphne could be a pal, though it's usually family relation that drives an obsessive need for revenge, so it's more likely she's a sister or cousin.

John: Poor Samantha. She's been kicked to the curb by both Quentin and Gerard, and now she's going to have to sit back and watch Gerard flirting with Daphne! Can't say I feel that bad for her...

Christine: I don't think we can expect Daphne to be successful with her assassination plot when she just drops her "reticule" on the floor and doesn't even notice. I'm surprised nobody heard it thud on the floor or that the gun didn't go off when she dropped it. Gerard seemed quite pleased with his tarot card spread today, which is not the usual reaction when a character draws La Mort

Dark Shadows Episode 1131 10/27/70

You can stream today's episode free on TubiTV

Leticia brings the box with the head to the secret grave, and tells the body he can now be whole again. She lifts the cover from the box, and the head is staring at her. The headless body approaches the boxed head. Leticia stops the body and says he must wait, as it's not time. She goes back to the head, and asks the head what more is to be done.

Barnabas ponders the missing head and the missing headless body. He wonders what kind of evil will be among them if they are brought together. Barnabas says they need to find out more about Judah Zachery. He says there has to be a reason why he was decapitated. He sends Julia to Bedford to find out.

Leticia tells Zachery that she understands, and then covers the box again. The body gets up, and she sits it back down before leaving.

Angelique is in the drawing room when Daniel enters. She introduces herself as Valerie Collins, Barnabas' wife. Daniel reacts strangely, saying she reminds him of someone, but he can't remember who. He says her name is not Valerie. He says it's not possible. He says that she's Angelique, and he remembers her. She says he hasn't been feeling well. He says she's a witch, and Ben Stokes testified to her death, but they didn't believe it. He says if she's the same, is Barnabas, too? She says he has an excellent memory.

He asks how they both came back. She asks if he'd rather just forget. He calls for help, and she says that no one can help him. He pounds on the door. She says when she came back she thought this might occur. She says he will have to forget everything. She asks if there are things he would like to forget. He asks what she means. She calls upon darkness.

Daniel is cold. She tells him to look, saying someone he loved is here. She tells him to turn and look at her. He does, and he sees the ghost of his wife. Angelique says she knows his secret, and asks if he'd like to hear his wife scream the way he did the night he murdered her on Widow's Hill. The ghost approaches and reaches out for him. He begs Angelique to make her go away. She says he will forget Barnabas and Angelique, and if he starts to, his wife's ghost will return. She sends the ghost back to her watery grave.

Leticia returns to Collinwood and hears Daniel crying in the drawing room. Angelique opens the door, and he's sitting in the chair, looking fine. He introduces Leticia to Valerie, Barnabas' wife. Daniel excuses himself, and Leticia asks him if Julia is there. He says she must be with Barnabas, and goes upstairs.

Julia tells Barnabas that she was in luck, as the newspaper in Bedford was printing that night, and she was able to find an article by a prosecutor who said Judah Zachery was the most evil man who ever lived — the Devil's son. He corrupted the entire town he lived in near Bedford. Zachery claimed immortality, and said he could not be killed as long as he possessed the Mask of Baal, which he wore during rituals. He said he got it from the Devil himself. Barnabas says Desmond mentioned finding a mask. She says that they couldn't find anyone to testify against him until the last day of his trial — a woman named Miranda testified against him, and explained that his head must be decapitated and the body hidden. She says the head was kept on display until it was stolen, perhaps by one of his followers. She says that over time, the judges and their families all died mysteriously. She says one of the judges was a Collins — Amadeus. Barnabas says that he remembers as a boy Amadeus and his family died.

Angelique enters and says that at last she can meet her new sister-in-law. He calls her Angelique, and says she's using a different name to protect him. She says she doesn't want to make a bad impression on her new sister-in-law. He sends Julia away, and Angelique asks how long she has traveled with him. She dismisses Julia, saying they have all the time in the world to find out about one another, and Julia tells her that she knows all about her.

Angelique reminds Barnabas that she loves him, and he says it's another lie. She asks him to let her show him that she has changed. He says he gave her a thousand nights of agony, and she says she gave him immortality.

Julia returns to Collinwood, and Leticia says she found the headless body. She goes to get Quentin, and Leticia says they can't wait for Quentin or Barnabas, and begs her to come with her.

Barnabas tells Angelique they're in their usual stalemate. He tells her that Daniel will remember her, and she says he has been taken care of. She says she's always thinking of Barnabas, and asks if he can ever think of her. She says in time perhaps he won't consider her one of his enemies.

Leticia leads Julia to the body. It's lying on the ground. Julia says it's not moving. Leticia uncovers the boxed head, and Julia stares into Judah Zachery's eyes. She realizes that Leticia is under his power. She turns away, but can't help but return to stare into his eyes.

Our thoughts:

John: I know it's too much to ask to see the headless body attempt to screw his head back on, but that would have been a classic scene. Of course I'm kind of glad they're keeping them separate, because let's face it — a shorter character with his head attached is less interesting than a tall headless man and a head in a box...

Christine: I agree that Judah Zachery is potentially more interesting in his separated form, though we'll see once he's put back together if that's true or not.

John: Harriet Collins almost had a Medusa-like look when her ghost appeared. So much for her looking like Julia (as Daniel's suggested when Julia first arrived in 1840).

Christine: Daniel is quite mad, you know. He may assume any redhead is his former wife.

John: So now we know that Angelique in 1840 doesn't know who Julia is. That should make for more interesting interactions moving forward. If Barnabas and Julia are smart, they should be able to use this against her... but then B&J haven't proven to be the sharpest tools in the shed since their trip to 1995... And it doesn't help if Julia is going to be under the spell of the Devil's son himself.

Christine: It is nice to have Mrs. Barnabas Collins back to cause trouble at the estate. It should make for some entertaining interactions with the rest of the Collins clan. Did you see that Julia is now credited as Dr. Julia Hoffman Collins? Perhaps there's hope for a marriage between her and Barnabas after all!

10/28/20 Christine's Addendum: I meant to note this and forgot. I found it odd that Jeremiah's portrait now hangs over the mantel at the Old House. We have only seen it hanging at Collinwood, with the first chronological appearance of it in 1897. It's possible that his portrait was placed here after Barnabas was locked in the coffin, and then later moved to Collinwood. It is difficult to believe that Barnabas hung it there himself after restoring the Old House in this time period. Perhaps he suffers no guilt from killing his brother in a duel over Josette, or maybe having a constant reminder of his terrible mistake is his way of atoning for his death.
