Angelique joins Blair, who asks her if she's not finding Joe Haskell interesting. She says he isn't. He talks about Maggie too much. Blair points out that Joe and Maggie are finished, and he's grown very fond of her. She warns him not to grow too fond, as she had, and he explains that unlike her he knows what he's doing.
There's a knock on the door, and Blair answers it to find Adam standing outside. He invites him in, and Blair introduces Angelique as his assistant. Adam says that he's going to tell Barnabas to stop the experiment, as he doesn't want a mate anymore. He says they cannot create a replacement for Carolyn. Adam says that she loves a man named Tony.
He goes to leave, and Blair tells him it will be a mistake if he does. Blair says that it can be arranged that Adam will have his mate and Carolyn, too. Blair admonishes Adam for not trusting him. Adam says that if he's wrong, and there's a chance for him to be with Carolyn, he will do anything Blair says. Blair says they must get him back to Collinwood, and sends him on his way.
After Adam is gone, Angelique asks what he means by his having his mate and Carolyn, too. Blair dismisses her and says the experiment needs to be expedited. He leaves, and Angelique thinks that she may lose her chance to be free of the vampire curse. She decides that she has to act tonight if she's to be free again.
Angelique looks into the mirror, and uses it to see Jeff and Julia working on the experiment. Jeff goes to leave, and Angelique directs him to stay. Julia asks him what's wrong, and he says he wants to be done soon. Julia says the body will be finished by midnight, and then they just need the woman who will provide the life force. Jeff asks her who Barnabas is planning to get. She says she doesn't know, but he'll have to find someone quickly, as the body will decompose in about a week. Jeff says he's not going to find a woman to volunteer. Julia says that if Barnabas doesn't, Adam may pick the woman for himself. Jeff realizes that it could be Vicki.
Blair enters and asks her what she was doing with the mirror. He asks if she was checking in on the experiment, and she says she was just curious. He tells her he knows how her devious mind works, and she will tell him why she was watching, and that they'll wait until the sun comes up if he has to. She says she wants to be part of the experiment. She says it will help him if she provides the life force, and he calls her out for being more interested in herself than in him. He demands to know what she saw in the mirror. He asks how soon they'll be moving on with the experiment, and Angelique lies and tells him that the body is not ready, and they won't be able to perform the experiment for a week. Blair threatens her, saying that she best remember that it's better to be what she is than nothing at all.
Jeff is asleep on a table when Julia tells him he looks exhausted. She suggests that he go to Collinwood to see Vicki. He says that she won't want to see him, as she broke their engagement. Julia tells him she's sorry, and offers to talk to Vicki. Jeff wonders what she would tell her. He suggests that she get some rest while he reads up on the experiment.
She leaves him alone, and he grabs a scalpel to destroy Adam's mate. Angelique appears, stopping him just in time, and tells him that they must begin the experiment immediately. She says she knows that everything is ready, and she is prepared to provide the life force. Jeff tries to explain that he doesn't know what to do. She moves in on him and bites his neck.
Our thoughts
John: You'd think Angelique would be comfortable by now with men who harbored interests in other women. She didn't let that get in the way of her feelings for Barnabas. I wonder if it's the fact that Maggie is the spitting image of Josette that adds insult to injury.
Christine: She may not have let Barnabas' interest in Josette get in the way of pursuing him, but remember how many people died in her attempt to win him back? I think she's bored with Joe because she likes Jeff Clark's flavor better. She seemed pretty ravenous the way she attacked him at the end of the episode.
John: So the magic mirror Blair had installed in his house works for anyone? Why else would the non-witch Angelique be able to use it? And interesting that the magic mirror has such an affinity for close-ups.
Christine: My thoughts exactly! It led me to wonder if there's a little bit of witchcraft left in her that Blair wasn't able to remove. Perhaps that's why she could cast a reflection in the basement lab mirror the other day.
John: I'll bet Blair wishes that Angelique was half as obedient as Adam is. Frankly I'm surprised he hasn't yet punished her again, based on her continued insubordination.
Christine: Considering that he's a man who is dedicated to evil, I think he really must admire her talent for disobedience, but since it's inconvenient, it also irritates him. When Nicholas promised Adam he would have both Carolyn and his mate, was he suggesting a threesome, or was he thinking he'd get Carolyn to provide the life force? I thought the whole point of Adam getting a mate was because he knew Carolyn had no interest in him beyond friendship. Why would he want her anyway, when she clearly has no interest in reading or discussing Freud with him? Once he sees his well-endowed mate, he may forget all about Carolyn.
Next week: Barnabas decides on who will be the lifeforce and it will end up bringing back memories from over a year before...
