Barnabas asks Adam how he can know he has Vicki as a hostage. Adam says he recognizes her ring, and Barnabas admits that he does. Adam asks if he will help him. He says Barnabas loves Vicki, and Adam asks for no more than that for himself. If Barnabas wants to see Vicki alive again, he must help Adam.

Julia comes to the old house and finds Barnabas in a chair, exhausted. He tells her that their troubles are just beginning. He says Adam came by last night, and is prepared to kill Vicki if they don't give him what he wants. Julia says another experiment is out of the question. He says she has done it before, and Julia reminds him that Lang had done the hardest part—assembling the body. She says that even if she could, they can't be responsible for creating a race of monsters. She says they need to go after whoever is controlling Adam. She suggests the two leading candidates are Stokes and Blair. Barnabas says he'll go see Stokes. He also tells Julia that he went to the hospital to see Jennings to view his wounds himself, but he was unable. He says when the man dies, he will become a vampire, and then no one in Collinsport will be safe. He tells her she must go to the hospital and inspect his wounds to see if he truly is a victim of a vampire.

There's a knock at the door. Jeff Clark demands to speak to Barnabas about Adam. Barnabas attempts to excuse Julia, and Jeff says it concerns her, too. Jeff says one of the sheriffs men saw someone resembling Adam this morning. Jeff realizes that Adam may in fact be Doctor Lang's creation. Jeff points out that when Lang died, there were no reports of a strange body in the laboratory. He says that either the body was hidden, or the experiment was completed. Jeff asks if they completed the experiment, and Barnabas denies it.

Jeff suggests that Adam may be the reason Vicki is missing, in which case they would be responsible. Julia says they buried the body in an unmarked grave. Jeff says that his description matches the body of Doctor Lang's creation, and he's got quite a track record of hurting or killing people. Jeff says he's only interested in finding Vicki. He says he just needs one good look at Adam to know if he's Doctor Lang's creation, and then he storms out.

There's a knock at the door of Stokes' home, but he initially refuses to answer. When the knocking persists, he lets Barnabas in. Stokes says he detests unannounced visitors.

Barnabas says Vicki is missing. He asks the professor if it's time they brought everything out in the open. He tells him that Adam has kidnapped Vicki. Stokes asks why he would know that. Barnabas says Stokes can't deny that he helped Adam, and helped teach him. Stokes admits it, and says he did not poison Adam's mind. Barnabas says Adam has found out about his origin, and now he will not rest until he has been given a mate. He says Adam is under the mistaken impression that Barnabas created him. He says that Adam has threatened to kill Vicki if he doesn't assist with his demands. Stokes says he is partially responsible. He did tell Adam the truth about his origin. Stokes says he will do everything possible to see that Vicki is not harmed. Barnabas asks if he knows where Adam is, and Stokes says he does. He'll go to him. He adds that if it were just Barnabas and Julia, he'd be less inclined to help. He's only doing so because Vicki is involved.

Stokes goes to see Adam, and asks where Vicki is. Adam says he doesn't know who he's talking about. Stokes says he taught him that it was wrong to lie. Adam says he's not lying. Stokes says that Barnabas would not fabricate a story. Adam says there are many things Stokes did not teach him. He asks where Vicki is, and if she's safe. Adam says she's safe. Stokes says that sooner or later the police will find her. Adam asks if he plans to go to the police, and Stokes says he can't go to the police. Adam tells him to leave, and Stokes asks him what caused him to change. Adam blames Stokes, who denies he's responsible for turning Adam into a cynical, scheming person. Adam says he's only talked to Carolyn, and Stokes again accuses him of lying. Stokes says that what he wants may not be wrong, but using Vicki to get it is wrong. Adam says he wants to be loved, and he will have a mate, or Barnabas will be punished by seeing Vicki die.

Our thoughts

John: Considering how involved he was in Adam's creation, it seems silly for Jeff to not know that Adam is in fact Lang's creation. He has a way of storming in and accusing people of things, only to back down as soon as they deny his claims. He's certainly no Burke Devlin.

Christine: Back in Episode 527, he did recognize Adam while he was under hypnosis by Prof. Stokes, so he may recognize him when he sees the arm he dug up at the cemetery on him again.

John: How is it that Stokes can sneak into Collinwood without anyone noticing? Did Carolyn have keys made for everyone in Collinsport? Liz is going to flip when she finds out.

Christine: It seems to me that the front door is kept unlocked. It's only within the house that doors are locked. That is the key to Collinwood.

John: Stokes is constantly whining about how Julia and Barnabas never share information with him, and yet whenever he has enough leverage to demand it, he gives to their requests while getting nothing in return. I wonder if they'll pull him into the process of creating Adam's mate. That would probably make him very happy.

Christine: Stokes is a morally upstanding character, so he wouldn't force their hand with Vicki's life at stake. I don't think they'll invite him to participate in the experiment. Julia and Barnabas seem to hold him at arm's length to prevent him from discovering Barnabas' affliction. I think they realize he'd be a lot more interested in Barnabas if he knew he was once a vampire, and that Adam is the reason he is currently walking around in the daytime.
