Ben enters the Collins family crypt. Barnabas is waiting for him. He asks why Ben isn't doing his work. Ben tells him he doesn't want him to see what he's doing. Barnabas asks if he's afraid that he would fling him into the open grave. He then says, "Josette is dead! How dare you dig her grave!"
Ben tells him that he wouldn't want anyone else to dig her grave. Barnabas asks Ben if the stars are out, because he doesn't want them to see what he will do tonight. Barnabas says that with Josette dead, no one deserves to live. He then tells Ben he wants to see her, and Ben says he doesn't want to see her considering how she died on the rocks. Barnabas asks if she was wearing the ring, and Ben tells him that she lost it. He then tells Barnabas that Joshua saw the ring when Josette had it, and knew Barnabas had been buried with it. He tells Barnabas that Joshua came to check for the ring, and found the coffin empty. Barnabas assumes that means his father knows the truth, but Ben explains that Joshua assumed the grave had been robbed. He says they came back, and Ben opened it and showed him Barnabas inside. Barnabas says that the danger has past, and Ben tells him that it's not, and he needs to let the ring go. Barnabas says he cannot, as it was the pledge between he and Josette.
Trask and Abigail discuss Josette's death—the latest tragedy in Collinwood. Abigail complains about the judge, and Trask explains that the judge is not the problem, it's the young man defending her. Abigail says that someone needs to tell him that if he wants to be successful, he will need the support of the Collins family. Trask agrees to talk to him, and Abigail adds that none of this would be necessary if they had Vicki's book. Ben arrives with firewood, and Abigail says she has important questions for him. She tells Trask she will do her duty, and he must do his.
Trask leaves, and Abigail asks Ben to testify at the trial, telling the court what Vicki forced him to do—to come to her room and steal the ribbon. She says he told her the witch made him do it. She tells him she has another task while he's digging Josette's grave. Remember that there are many paths to the grave, and he should think about his path if he goes back to jail.
Peter reviews Vicki's book when Trask shows up at the jail. He puts the book on his chair with a coat over it. Trask forces Peter to invite him in, and he asks if he longs for a life of squalor. He offers a veiled threat that he doesn't want the Collins family as enemies, and Peter all but throws him out, but not before Trask nearly reveals the book by lifting up his coat. After finally getting Trask out the door, he considers throwing the book into the fireplace, but decides against it and leaves with it tucked under his coat.
Peter buries the book in Eagle Hill Cemetery.
Barnabas comes out of the secret room and hears digging noises. He calls to Ben. Peter asks who's there, and Barnabas sneaks back into the secret chamber. Peter enters and once again asks who's there. Ben shows up and asks what he's doing there. Peter says he heard a voice he recognized. Ben says it was him, and Peter says the voice was calling for Ben. Barnabas listens in as Ben argues with him. Peter leaves, and Barnabas comes out of the secret room. Ben asks where he's going, and Barnabas says he can't take the chance to let him go. Ben explains that the boy is Vicki's only chance, and Barnabas agrees not to harm him, for Vicki's sake. Barnabas exits the crypt and sees Ben has finished with the grave. He swears that he will do everything in his power to bring Josette back.
Our thoughts
John: Trask says he shudders at the thought of touching Vicki's book. I'll bet he'd give anything to get his hands on it.
Christine: I'm beginning to think he might be feeling the same way about Abigail. Or perhaps it's the other way around.
John: I do like Trask's Guido Sarducci hat. I wonder if he can afford wenches to clean up after him, since he gives Bradford a hard time that he cannot.
Christine: Oh, he's got the wenches alright. And probably the swains too.
John: I was hoping Peter might get a chance to talk to Barnabas, to convince him to come to Vicki's aid. A vampire testifying on behalf of a witch seems appropriate...
Christine: I love how Peter Bradford looks around the room for a good place to hide the book and settles on the one chair in the room where a visitor would want to sit. What was wrong with sticking it under the mattress? He and Vicki are truly made for one another. And Barnabas wants to kill everything, but has to settle on throttling Ben again. Good thing he has such a thick neck. I guess Barnabas is all done teaching him to read or being kind to him ever again.
