Angelique wanders through the house, wondering how she will be able to send the ghost of Jeremiah back to his grave. She assumes he's under someone else's control, since he no longer abides by her wishes. She goes upstairs to rest.
Vicki paces around her room in the old house. She listens at the door as Angelique walks down the hall. She goes to hide and knocks something down.
Angelique calls out asking if the sound she heard is Jeremiah. She shouts out that she is not frightened, and bursts into the room to find Vicki. She asks what she's doing in the house. Vicki apologizes for frightening her. She says she wasn't frightened. Vicki says she heard her say Jeremiah's name. Angelique says that's absurd, but asks again what Vicki is doing there. She explains that Barnabas invited her to stay.
Angelique asks if she knows that she and Barnabas were married last night. She asks why Vicki is shocked by it. She says it was so sudden, and asks if Angelique is upset with her being in the house. Vicki says that she doesn't want to stay against her wishes, and Angelique says she did not intend to make her feel unwelcome. She says she too was questioned by Trask, and she knows how cruel he can be. She says no one will tell Trask Vicki is there. She smiles as she leaves the room.
Barnabas finds Angelique downstairs. She explains she was up all night. She also says she was shocked to find a guest in the house. Angelique questions him on his inviting Vicki to stay without telling her. He explains how he's protecting her from Trask. He asks why her presence concerns her so much. He asks if she's jealous of Vicki, and she asks if she should have reason to be. Barnabas says that even if he believed in witches, he couldn't believe that Vicki was one. He asks if she thinks Vicki is a witch, and Angelique says she doesn't know about witches. Barnabas explains he needs to go into town for work, and she says she'll be fine while he's away. After he leaves, she says she will not tell a soul that Vicki is there, but that doesn't mean that no one will find out.
Ben works on the fire as Angelique paces downstairs. He goes to leave when she tells him to go to Collinwood and get a black ribbon from Abigail's room. He refuses. She reminds him he has no free will. He asks what she's up to, and Angelique says she's going to cast a spell on Abigail. She wants her to have a dream in which she sees Victoria Winters in the old house. Ben asks what she has against Vicki, and she tells him that she's a witch. She says things have been happening in the house that even she can't explain. Ben assures her that Vicki is not a witch. Angelique says as long as she's free, the witch hunt will go on. Ben realizes she's just protecting herself. She commands him to go to Abigail's room.
Ben makes his way to Abigail's room in the new house. He sneaks in, closing the door behind him. He rifles through her drawers until he finds the ribbon Angelique requested. Abigail walks in on him.
Angelique realizes something has gone wrong.
Abigail asks Ben what he's doing in her room. She claims he came to steal from her. She asks why he came to her room. He asks her to show mercy on him. He says he cannot tell her why he's here, and she threatens to tell her brother Joshua. He says he had no choice, and when she asks what he means, he says the witch told him to come there. He suddenly loses his ability to speak.
Our thoughts
John: Um, wouldn't Barnabas be aware if Angelique had been up all night? Do they sleep in separate rooms?
Christine: Sleeping in separate rooms wouldn't be unusual for the time, though it is unusual that he's unaware of her being up all night on their wedding night. I suspect the marriage was not consummated. Angelique doesn't have that newlywed glow.
John: Doesn't it seem like Angelique should be able to get information about Vicki to Abigail without needing to cast a spell?
Christine: You might think so, but how could she do that? If she compels Ben to tell her or tries to send a note, Barnabas will find out and be angry. She did promise in Episode 390 that she would be an obedient wife, so she's got to have Abigail find out without actually telling anyone.
John: Well, we all pretty much know that Ben is not going to be able to use any non-verbal skills to clearly identify the witch he was referring to, which does not bode well for Miss Winters.
Christine: Vicki is in serious trouble with Angelique working against her to take the heat off herself. Unfortunately for her, it does not resolve the problem of who's the other witch in town working against her.
After yesterday's cluster of an episode, this one was a vast improvement. Much better flow. Always a treat to see the two old pros, Clarice Blackburn and Thayer David sharing a scene together, and an exciting one at that!
ReplyDeleteYou raise a good point about the wedding night. Barnabas has already slept with Angelique in the past, so he's well aware of how hot she is. Despite not being in love with her, he IS a man with a healthy libido--and she's his wife.
