Angelique sits in her room, staring into the fire.
We see Ben in the woods, sharpening an axe. He thinks about ways of helping Barnabas without Angelique finding out. He hears her voice, and decides he's imagining it. She calls for him to come to her, and he refuses. She yells, and he sees her head in the woods. She beckons for him to come to her, and he does.
Barnabas is surprised to hear that Jeremiah is leaving Collinwood. Jeremiah explains that it's an impulse he had. Ben comes in, and Jeremiah says he'll need his horse soon to catch a stage to Collinsport. Ben mentions his duties, and Jeremiah says he will take care of his brother. Ben leaves, and Barnabas asks if Jeremiah will be back in time for the wedding. Barnabas explains that he needs his best man, and Jeremiah tells him that he won't do anything that would get in the way of his wedding.
Ben arrives to see Angelique, and mentions that now he has to pack bags and prepare horses. Angelique asks if it's about Jeremiah, and Ben confirms that he's preparing to leave. She says he's not going anywhere. She says that Barnabas will have to beg Jeremiah to stay. Ben suggests that Josette might be able to get Barnabas to do it. Angelique picks up her Josette doll and brings it before the fireplace. She speaks to it and says the mark of the pitchfork is still on her hand, and that only Barnabas can stop Jeremiah from leaving. She tells her to go to Barnabas.
Josette finds Barnabas downstairs. He sees the pitchfork mark on her hand. She asks Barnabas to beg for Jeremiah not to go. Barnabas says he'll be back in time for the wedding, and Josette says he will not. She says that she knows why Jeremiah is going. Barnabas says he doesn't know. She tells him that she's the reason he's leaving. She tells Barnabas that Jeremiah hates her. Barnabas dismisses that claim. He tells her that everyone loves her, him most of all.
She clutches Barnabas and asks him to hold her. He tells her that he'll go to Jeremiah and implore him to stay.
Josette has a change of heart and suggests that they let him go. That it would be for the best for him to leave. Barnabas notices the mark on her hand is gone. She's ecstatic. She says Jeremiah can go wherever he wants to go, and stay for as long as he'd like.
Ben brings Jeremiah's bags downstairs. Angelique asks him if Barnabas stopped Jeremiah from leaving. He says that her magic didn't work.
Joshua interrupts them and asks her if Ben was bothering her. He asks him to repeat what he said. Angelique says he said something he should be punished for. Ben tells him prison would be better than being under his rule. Joshua tells Angelique to stay away from Ben. He leaves them as he goes to his study.
Ben says no one can stop Joshua. Angelique realizes that if something happened to Joshua, Jeremiah would have to stay. Ben asks her to do something as mean to Joshua as he is to him. Angelique says that she'll do that for him.
Joshua interrogates Jeremiah, trying to understand why he's leaving. He implores him to wait until the morning, and Jeremiah defiantly tells him that he is leaving.
Angelique fondles a piece of clay. She asks Ben what he'd like to have happen to Joshua. At first he asks her to turn him into a snake, and then he changes his mind, asking her to turn Joshua into a jackass.
Jeremiah tells Joshua he is leaving. Joshua asks him about Millicent. He asks what will happen if anything happens to him. Jeremiah explains that he's been detained long enough, and he's leaving. He hears a squeal, and turns to see Joshua is gone. A cat sits atop the table next to him.
Angelique shows Ben her molded clay cat. She explains to Ben that the cat is his master.
Our thoughts
John: I think you were right when you suggested that it would have been a lot easier if Angelique had just concocted a love potion for Barnabas.
Christine: Angelique is a mean girl. She could do the magic to have the man she wants, but chooses to make them all suffer instead. She doesn't seem to realize that her behavior will only serve to make Barnabas less likely to love her.
John: Either Angelique's special potions are losing their strength, or Josette and Jeremiah's will power is stronger than we've been led to believe.
Christine: I thought it was the power of Josette and Barnabas' love that warded off the evil spell, though it's difficult to tell why the effects wax and wane. It could be that Angelique is just a novice witch who is still perfecting her craft.
John: Okay, Angelique pulled a cat out of the bag today. But it does raise the question — if she can turn anyone into a cat just by manipulating a lump of clay, you'd think getting someone to love her wouldn't be so difficult.
Christine: Perhaps that's not really what she wants. She seems to revel in exerting power over others. I enjoyed how much fun she and Ben were having deciding what to turn Joshua into, though it would have been much funnier if she'd fulfilled Ben's wish to make him a jackass. Ben is realizing there are perks to working for a witch. I wonder what they'll name the kitty. Too bad they couldn't get one that looked a little more like Joshua.
A more appropriate Joshua kitty. |
I got a black and white cat, I thought at first I was going to call him Joshua or Josh but decided to call him Cuddles. I just like cute names.
