Angelique is holding a soldier doll when Jeremiah comes in. She asks what it is, and Jeremiah explains it was part of Barnabas' regiment, which is what he called his toy soldiers. He offers to take it to the playroom, and she asks to look at it for a while. She's glad to confirm it once belonged to Barnabas, as she will use it to cause him more pain and suffering than he has ever known.
She hides it in her pocket when Vicki enters. They introduce themselves, and Vicki points out that they have much in common. Vicki says she hopes they can be friends, as she thinks they'll both have trouble making other friends in the house.
Jeremiah returns, and asks Vicki where Sarah is. She explains that she's taking a nap. He says he hopes that she will stay with them for a while, and she says she has little choice. He says she could return to where she came from, and she says that she still can't explain why she cannot. She expresses concern about Abigail, and he says he has more influence over Joshua than she does. He asks her if the person he resembles was someone she loved. She tells him that she still loves him, and he's her reason for staying in Collinwood.
Angelique talks to the toy soldier, and shows it a handkerchief that belonged to Barnabas. She says those two things are all she needs to make him regret what he's done to her. She hides the items when there's a knock at her door, and Barnabas comes to see her.
He says they can be good friends, but no more than that. She grabs him and says it means he can't resist her since he came to her room, and he tries to dissuade her. She speaks of their nights together in Martinique, and she kisses him. She says he can't resist her, and he says they can't be together alone.
He says he loves Josette, and any relationship with her would be wrong. She tells him that he has given her no choice, and she tells him to leave her room. She takes the items she hid back out of the drawer, and then decides that she will wait until Josette arrives before making Barnabas suffer.
A strange man enters the house, and Vicki comes downstairs. He complains there was no one to meet them at the ship, no carriage in Boston, and no family greeting for the bride. He opens the door and invites his daughter in. Vicki introduces herself as the governess to Sarah. He explains that he is André duPrés, and asks for a member of the Collins family. Jeremiah enters and welcomes them. André says he's looking for Joshua Collins. Jeremiah says they had no idea when they would arrive, being two weeks late. Josette asks Vicki if something is wrong, as she's been staring at her. Jeremiah apologizes on Vicki's behalf, and suggests Sarah is done with her nap. Jeremiah asks Josette to stay while he takes her father to his room.
Angelique greets Josette, and they speak French. Barnabas appears and he embraces Josette, while Angelique gives him a nasty look.
Barnabas and Josette kiss, and Josette asks Angelique to unpack her things. Barnabas tells her he was concerned that he might never see her again.
In her quarters, Angelique gathers the toy soldier and handkerchief. She explains there isn't going to be a wedding as she ties the handkerchief around the soldiers neck. She pulls it tight.
Barnabas reaches for his throat. Josette asks him what's wrong. He loosens his collar, and says it's nothing. Josette asks him for a tour of the estate, and introductions to his family.
Angelique says she wishes she could see the look on Josette's face as she pulls the handkerchief tight.
Barnabas chokes, and he falls into a chair. He begs for Josette to get someone to help him as he falls to the floor in pain.
Our thoughts
John: So is Vicki planning to live long enough to warn Burke not to get on that plane? Why else would she be staying in the past on Burke's behalf?
Christine: The only benefit for her being stuck in the past is that she can feel like Burke is still alive by having Jeremiah around to act as his replacement. Maybe that's how her doppelgänger, Betty Hanscombe, came to be. Sarah sure has to take a lot of naps for a 9 year old. Perhaps she died from too much napping.
John: That Angelique is some kind of witch. 1) Take one toy soldier. 2) Tie something around it's neck. 3) Tighten. That's all it takes? Usually, voodoo dolls have a few more prerequisites...
Christine: Angelique is casting a spell on Barnabas by binding the soldier that she's using as a poppet to represent him. What more were you expecting?
John: I guess I should have assumed Sam Evans would portray Josette's father. Since he shaved for the role, that's a pretty good sign that we'll be in the 1700's for the foreseeable future!
Christine: I am thoroughly enjoying the drama of the Collins family history, but wonder when we'll be checking back in on the events of 1967, and what attempts will be made to rescue Vicki from her strange predicament.
John: Additions to our 1795 scorecard:
Present Day/1795
- Sam Evans/André duPrés
- Maggie Evans/Josette duPrés
That next-to-last photo shows what's nearly the first thing I think of when it comes to Lara Parker as Angelique. She's an expert at ALMOST "breaking the fourth wall" without actually doing it.
