A bat flies in to David's room. It attacks him and he screams for help. Roger and Liz come running and find him behind his door. He says a gigantic bat attacked him, but there's none present in the room. He says it must have flown away. He says it flew in through the window. Roger notices the window is closed and bolted shut. Liz tells Roger to call Dr. Woodard. He goes downstairs and Liz says she believes David. He tells her that Barnabas sent it after him.
Barnabas stares out the window of the old house. Roger approaches the old house and Barnabas welcomes him in. Roger tells him he's troubled by David. He says that he imagined he was attacked by a bat.
Roger says he came to visit to apologize for David prowling around the old house. He asks if Miss Hoffman had told him, and Barnabas lies, saying she mentioned it. He asks Roger what he was looking for. Roger says David thinks Barnabas has something hidden in the basement of the old house. Barnabas says there's nothing there but odds and ends. He offers to show Roger, who says he doesn't want to waste Barnabas' time. Roger also says David says his ghostly friend Sarah appeared to him last night and warned him to stay away from the old house. Barnabas asks what else she said, and Roger says that's all he knows. Barnabas says it must have been a dream. Roger says of course it was. He also says David had a dream of Barnabas rising out of a coffin.
Barnabas asks if Roger has considered sending David away for a while. He says he would consider it, but Liz would never agree. Barnabas suggests that the two of them could try to convince her.
Dr. Woodard tells David the pill he gave him will help him go to sleep. David says he did see the bat, and that Sarah was in his room last night. Woodard asks what she said. David asks if he believes Sarah is a ghost. He says he doesn't know what to believe, and asks him again what she said. He says Sarah warned him to stay away from the old house. He says she also said Willie Loomis was innocent. Woodard looks puzzled as David falls asleep.
Liz refuses to send David away to a special school. Dr. Woodard comes in and says David is physically fine. Roger asks if he can recommend a psychiatrist to help with David's fantasies. Woodard says that David may not be imagining all these things.
Sarah appears in David's room and calls for him to wake up.
She says she's mad at him for going to the old house when she told him not to. He says he had to go to prove that he wasn't lying. She warns him to stay away from the old house. He asks her what's in the house, and she says danger is in there. He asks if the danger is in the basement, which is locked, and she says maybe, but she can't tell him. She gives him a toy soldier to protect him. He asks her to stay while he gets his aunt to meet her, and she fades away before his eyes.
Our thoughts
John: I'm so glad we got a replay of the Bat-tack from last Friday. That may be my all-time favorite Dark Shadows cheesy special effect. And it looks like puppet-Bat was NOT cousin Barnabas after all—I assume it was just under his control while he stood looking out the window of the old house. And who knows, maybe Jonathan Frid had to wield the stick it was attached to...
Christine: I prefer to believe that Barnabas transformed into a bat and quickly flew back to the Old House where he resumed his favorite position, gazing out his window.
John: I don't know why Roger bothered to try and convince Liz to send David away on his own. Surely by now he must realize he's got zero pull with her. Now cousin Barnabas, on the other hand...
Christine: Barnabas should be careful not to give Liz reason to suspect that there is validity to David's fears.
John: David says the toy soldier Sarah gives him, which surely belonged to Barnabas, is really keen.
Christine: He may have been flustered after he promised her he'd keep it before she asked him to promise to keep it.
